I have two Sprint iPhones (5 and 4s) and Sprint gave me unlock codes fo both - what do I do with the codes?  I am taking them with me to England to use there?

I have 2 Sprint iPhones which were no longer in use on the Sprint account, Sprint provided unlock codes for both and told us to give them to the new carrier.  We are taking the phones to England as we are moving there.
We assume that unlocked iPhones are as good as those bought directly from Apple with no carrier attached to them?
We are going to buy sim cards and use them there, so not sure what to do with the unlock codes?
Any help much appreciated!
Thank you

There is no unlock code that can be used with an iPhone by another carrier.
The GSM side of an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 previously activated with Sprint should be unlocked for use with a GSM carrier's SIM card outside of the U.S. but if not, you need to request the unlocking with Sprint with Sprint sending the unlock request to Apple. The unlocking is done with iTunes on your computer.
