I have typed a letter using TextEdit, but when I try to print it, it is in PDF format.  Why?

I have typed a letter on my iMac  OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 using TextEdit.  The finished letter says it is in RTF format, but when I try ro print it, it comes up in PDF format and looks altogether different than what I typed.  What is happening here?

First run Software Update in the App Store to see if there are new drivers for Epson.
Open the Printers system preference and check what the "Kind" says. If it mentions your printer model, that's usually what you want. Anything else might be causing a mismatch.
eg - here's mine. Notice it says "Kind: Brother HL-5250 series CUPS" which is as it should be. If it said anything else I'd want to reinstall the printer.
