I have updated the iPhone for and an error message 1611 has appeared and my phone no longer works. Any suggestions please?

I have updated my iPhone 4 with itunes 10.5 and my phone has stopped working and it only comes up with an error message 1611 saying there is a hardware issue - yet all I did was plug it to my computer. Help would be good as I need my phone for work, personal etc and it is annoying that an update can stop my phone from working.

2. Click the View option in the iTunes menu.
3. Select the Show Sidebar option.
Connect your phone, select it in the Sidebar...the various tabs will now show as before.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I did call apple care and they guided me through everything.. they said it was the hardware

Well when you download the update with iTunes it will always download the whole new version (in your case 7.0.2) even if its just an bug fix. If you already have 7.0 download the update over-the-air.
You already wrote that the update is only 21 MB, so its not the whole firmware package of 7.0.2 you get with iTunes.

You are going to have to download and install iTunes on the computer. Your iPhone is in recovery mode. See this support document for help with that. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Try to reset:
Hold the Sleep/Wake & home buttons until the screen goes dark & the Apple logo appears
To power off:
Hold the Sleep\Wake button until you see slide to power off then slide to power off

Ralph..........Did as you suggested and I am still getting the message "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding". I am not able to connect with anything on the Internet. Frustrating since I am able to connect with my laptop. Thanks for the suggestion.

First, try bringing up Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the home screen. Turn on the flashlight by tapping the icon in the lower left. Does the flashlight work? If not, perhaps you have a hardware issue.
If it works, check the top of the screen when you open the Camera app to make sure you have the flash on.
