i have windows p.s. elements 12. can i get a credit towards a mac version?

If it was a boxed product you will have a Mac installation DVD in the package and can install it with the same serial number. If it was a download version and you are switching to Mac you can get a new serial number for Mac free - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/order-product-platform-language-swap.htm l.
If you want to maintain the product on both platforms (you are allowed to two activations) then start a live web Chat with Adobe support and see what they have to say. http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html - select product and a topic, then 'I still need help' and you will get a chat button.
