I have WRT54GS, but what would I gain from a Draft n Router?

I have a WRT54GS router and I am wondering what would a new Draft N router do for me? Is it worth the upgrade?
Which Draft N model would be an upgrade to the WRT54GS?
How much faster will it be than my existing GS?
Also,
My WRT54GS is very stable, how stable is the new Draft N models?

great_white wrote:
you can go for any of n- routers...the range will be 4 times farther and the speed will be 12 times faster than the normal g standard routers...
I am sure I am not the most knowledgeable person to answer this, and judging from your profile you may be more apt to give a "right" answer than I, but as I stated above if the OP has no current issues with their setup then there would really be no reason to update to an N router.
Who really needs 12 times more speed and 4 times more range if you are never more than 50-60 feet from your router to begin with, not to mention if you still only have a G card in your laptop or PC then you would not get the "benefits" of the N router anyway, am I wrong in this assumption?
I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes I just don't like when someone is told to buy something more than what they will need, unless they are buying something that is going to be outdated in 3 months then maybe they should look to future proof a bit more, in which case maybe an N router would be the best choice, but I personally would just like a little more to come out on the N standard as far as being the final version. Also don't these companies putting out the N routers make the claims that their "draft N" hardware may not even be compatible once a final version is brought to market? Meaning you would have to buy a new N router anyway?
Don't take my post as harsh, it isn't meant that way, just a discussion and some points of interest.

  • What would you change from factory default on router

Newbie here. For all the master techs out there. What all should be changed from factory defaults on router to make it as safe as possible? thanks

    1. Change the router password (default "admin") on the Adminstration tab. Choose a good longer password.
    2. Enable wireless security WPA or WPA2 in the Personal/PSK variant.
    3. Choose a good passphrase, if possible use a random generated 63 character string.
That's about what you have to do to secure the router and the wireless.

  • I have a desktop Mac OS X Leopard. I want to upgrade to Quicken 2007, Install Snow Leopard and download iLife '11. I heard that Quicken and Snow Leopard can clash and have problems.  What would be the best order for installing these products. Thank You.

I have a desktop MAC OSX Leopard. I want to upgrade to Quicken 2007, install Snow Leopard, download iLife'11.  I heard that Quicken and Snow Leopard can clash..........that is why I am upgrading Quicken. What would be the best order of installing these products.  I have gotten defferent opinions and I want to be sure I install them correctly.
    Thank You.

First, install OS X, then install your third-party software.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
      1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the
update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it.
Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've
          restarted.
      2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through
other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
      3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other
interruption occurs during  installation, use the standalone installer (see below)
from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation  is in progress do not use
          the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
          1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
          2. Restart the computer.
          3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
          4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
              logo appears.
          5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
          6. Follow instructions.
After installing Snow Leopard you should update it by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • What would prevent me from turning on wi fi?

I,ve been using my MacBook Air with a comcast provided router for 18 months without a connectivity problem until today. Suddenly the wi fi is turned off and I cannot get it to turn on. There are no bars showing on the indicator, but wi fi is working because I am using my iPad mini to post this query. What would cause the MacBook Air wi fi to shut down? It worked fine yesterday.   Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Bill

For anyone interested, I think the crux of this issue was that once upon a time, my son also had an iphone, and then was switched to non-phone (he dropped his iphone and it cracked beyond use). I went through the "unregister" process that is documented online. However, something stuck. That said, my plan was always to get him an iphone in the future, but was waiting for his plan to be in upgrade mode, and also, I had him use a crappy phone to understand the value of a nice phone -- even though, he only had an iPhone 4, 8G, and it was free, I wanted to teach him about taking care of the phone...
That said, he got his upgrade a few days ago, and it immediately fixed the iMessage issue on his iPad...odd, still.

  • What will i gain from SL to ML?

    I'm presently running a 2007 iMac desktop
    Version 10.6.8
    2.66 GHz IC2duo
    3GB 800 MHz
I like a lot of Snow Leopard users saw all the horror stories about Lion & decided not to update. But I'm hearing subsequent updates & the newer Mountain Lion has fixed a lot of problems. What if any significant will I gain from ML & is it worth it or should I just stick with SL?

Start by looking at the new features of ML (http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/).
Read application that do not work under ML and require keeping SL around somewhere: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Your system is older, so will run slower than some, and upping RAM to its max through macsales.com or crucial.com will help as 4 GB RAM is viewed an "bare minimum".

  • What would I gain by going to Logic Pro or Logic Express.

I am a current power user of Garage Band (funny huh?) and I have figured out ways around a lot of things. Most my material are samples with vocals. I am doing dance music and want to step up. But will I really be gaining anything. I do not use midi. I just want the ability to timestrech vocals to fit beats and that sort of thing. Should I go to logic express or jump right into logic pro?
What can pro do that express cannot?
    thanks, technoreid

You can find a brief feature comparison on Logic Express' page. This will give you an overview of what Express can and cannot do. If all you are doing is time stretching audio to fit already made beats, then Express may be what you need. You can do some beat composing with Express, but you won't have plug-ins such as Ultrabeat. If you can get by with the EXS-P and perhaps the Remix Tools Jam Pack, you can come up with some pretty good stuff in Express.
And like Stash put it: if you need more, you can always upgrade.

  • What would I gain by going PRO?

    Hi All,
I have an older iMac slot-load 350Mhz G3, which I have QT 7.0.4 installed on. In a previous thread I found out that I could run 7.0 on my machine, just the slow processor could not play back HD vids.
I have also installed "flip4mac" which enables WMV files to be played in QuickTime, sometimes better than using WMV9. Some files I can play back flawlessly, even using the AV control to speed up the movie, but some (those with a high kbit/sec rate) are choppy, dropping many frames, even though the playback rate is a low 30fps or so.
My question is, will buying QT PRO allow me to change the bit rate? The movie in question is a WMV Standard 9, but @ 2135 kbits/sec. In this instance, the WMV9 Application played the vid better than QT did. I'm not even going to attempt to view HD vids on this, but it seems like I could at least view some of the lower quality vids..... any ideas?
    Thanks for any help,
    Bob

Try NicePlayer, its free, supports full-screen playback (without QuickTime Pro) and playlists.
    "NicePlayer
Quite simply, the nicest media player for Mac.
Designed from the ground up from people who like to watch movies, NicePlayer does all of the things that you would expect from a media player, and all of the things you didn't know you needed.
Uses QuickTime. NicePlayer takes advantage of QuickTime and all of the codecs available to it, but without any of the nag screens. That means that you can play anything QuickTime can, and with our plug-in support even more -- including DVDs.
Easy to Use Interface. With an interface that only appears when you need it, NicePlayer makes it more convenient and easier to play all of your media. Double click on the window to change to full screen. Right click to pause. Use the scroll wheel to change the window size.
The Size You Want. Because NicePlayer allows you to use the scroll wheel to adjust playback of your movie to arbitrary sizes, you can easily do your work while watching a movie. You can even adjust the size of the window when playing DVDs -- so when you come across one of those widescreen DVDs encoded in full frame, you can zoom in so that you don't get black bars on all four sides of the movie when watching on your Powerbook or Cinema Display (using NicePlayer's "Fit Width" command also simplfies this more in most cases).
Playlists. Queue up multiple media files and have them play sequentially, automatically.
Plugins. QuickTime doesn't support playing the files you want to watch? NicePlayer has an open plugin architecture to support other media playback engines as well. That means that anyone can create a plugin to embed another media playback engine so NicePlayer can be extended past QuickTime (i.e. DVD Playback, VLC)."
    http://niceplayer.indyjt.com/
    The XinePlayer plug-in for NicePlayer:
"The Xine-NicePlayer plugin provides playback for many media types -- DivX, XviD, HDTV streams saved to disk, etc. And it performs extremely well! There are a few minor bugs in Xine-NicePlayer, but for the most part, media playback works better than with the built-in QuickTime support."

  • I have Lion but what do you do with it. I need something like MS Word, Excel....what do I need?

I am new to Apple and I don't know all the ins and outs yet. I thought when I downloaded Lion OS that was my MS Office but for MacBook. Why do I need Lion and do I have to download MS office to get any word processing capabilities and excel capabilites. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Windows is from Microsoft so they give you a free trial of Office which is also from Microsoft, so it reinforces use of Office.
You can use the free LibreOffice, which reads and writes Office files, there is a version for OS X , Windows and Linux, so your files can be used by anyone.

  • How do you unlock an iphone 4 on Orange/EE UK? they said they have unlocked it but what do I do from there?

Here are the instructions they gave me:
1)Insert a non-Orange 3G SIM card.  This must be a network provider who also supplies the iphone/ipad.
    2)Switch ON the handset.
3)Connect to iTunes using USB cable
4)Use the “restore” option within iTunes (located at the bottom of iTunes not the top)
5)The handset may then display: USB cable and iTunes icon.
    6)Disconnect from USB then re-connect
    7)Synchronise device with iTunes
8)Once synchronised a message will appear on iTunes stating “Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked” If using IOS5 this message will not show
9)Follow on screen set up instructions to enable new carrier settings
To me they seem a little convoluted so I wanted some help/feedback before I start to do it.

    What seems convoluted?
    Follow the directions.

  • Seem to have adobe flash player 12 activec and 12 plugin but what is "New Player" from TUGUU SL?

Is this "New Player" some kind of third party scam or is it part of Adobe?  has a blue/purple pyramid logo with a right arrow inside of the box.  Should I uninstall it...also I am getting some kind of message from microsoft...supposedly to agree to some kind of new software by hitting "next"...is that needed?

"New Player" is not an Adobe product and it doesn't come FROM Adobe or with ANYTHING you can download here.
I NEVER use anything but the Adobe FULL installers for Flash Player or Reader
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Nothing is ever bundled with those, and they are "Official" downloads for the freeware products.

  • Widget Gives Performance Stats -- But What Do They Mean?

I just downloaded a widget --iStat Pro 3.2 -- that gives performance measures on my iMac.
Now I have measures but wonder how to read them.
For example my iMac has 1.25 gb of memory -- it came with 256 and I added 1 gb.
    The widget shows memory:
    wired 137 mb
    active 230 mb
    inactive 640 mb
    free 271 271 mb
(of course these numbers change depending on what I'm doing)
Any idea what these four measures mean? I take it "wired" is what's needed to "keep the lights on" and active is what's running but what would the difference be between inactive and free?
My CPU stats often show almost 100% usage -- split between "user" and "system" with only a few % "free" or "nice" -- even as I run iTunes, Firefox, Entourage and a few widgets (clock, weather, ...). If this is 100% whaqt happend when I start to do other things?
The numbers seem weird but then again I have no idea to what I should compare.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

All the info you want on the RAM usage is found HERE in a KB article. It explains it rather nicely.
Sometimes, apps have creeping memory and CPU usage. The longer they are open, the more resources they take up. Quitting the apps resets this. I have found that Safari in particular is a hog which is why I use Camino for browsing.
In activity monitor, check the option to show all processes and there are probably a few things that you would not see right away running. Also, if there is more than one user logged in at the same time, that would take up more cycles.
