I hear a soft POP noise and iMac dies - help?

This occurs seemingly randomly but I think is more frequent when fan turns on.
The iMac can restart immediately and run fine or it happens several times in a row (usually I stop using it for a while).
I know that I need to take it in - but any ideas?

  • Popping noises and freezing up.

I have a MacBook with Mac OS X (10.4.11). I keeping hearing these popping noises from my computer and my screen (when watching a movie on iTunes) freezes up for a couple of seconds. Even when I am not watching a movie my computer pops. I've searched the support pages and the only thing I could find was an audio update for Mac OS X (10.4.10) which does not work for my computer. Can anyone help me?

Finally, somebody else with this problem. I too have 10.4.11 on 3 macs, my MB, my iMac and my work MB. Randoms pops all the time and nothing consistent, just lierally as and when. I actually rang apple about this and they said they couldn't help and the mac needed service, my a**.
I find it hard to believe i can get this from 3 machines. I've had my iMac for 10 months and Macbook for 5 months before this started. I can't work out what the **** it is, i thought it was quicktime so i rolled back to 10.4.9 with QT 7.1.6 and nothing changed. My only other conclusion would be a firmware update because thats something that cannot be reversed.
    Cheers

  • Popping noise on iMac core 20" anyone?

    Hi
This is my first post. I aquired a core duo 20" 7 days ago (my first mac).
For no reason at all I keep hearing a 'popping' noise from the speakers. It occurs randomly, and usually when nothing is happening at all. Anyone else get this?
It is very annoying, and worry it will affect music editing at a later point.

Well to be honest the manager did try and get out of refunding at first. This is what happened at PC WORLD
"I have these problems with this mac I bought from you two weeks ago" I said
"have you called apple techical support" He said
    "no" I said
    "why not" he said
"I didn't want to, and I biught the mac from you not from apple" I said
"Oh he said - well let me see - (he checked his computer) well we only I have a display model left in stock" He said
(yep - he was trying to pass the one on display on to me as a replacement!!)
    "not acceptable" I said
"I'm very sorry but none of our stores have any in stock at the moment, but we can deliver one" He said
"I don't think so - whats my other options" I said
"only the display model from here sir?" He said
"any other options ?" I said
    "no sir sorry" He said
    "I think you'll find there are" - I said
"you are eligible for a refund if you want one sir" he said (obviously realising where I was going with myu line of questioning)
    "that'll do nicely" - I said
I signed a form, left the mac with him, and walked out of PCWORLD macless but with a full refund, and now I plan to buy one direct from apple.

  • Loud POP noise and burning smell from G5

I was on my G5 working when all of a sudden I heard this loud POP noise (like a firecracker) and the computer shut off. I could smell something got burnt but not sure what. I started the computer back up and everything seems to be working fine. Is there any way to test to see if any damage was done? I've ran techtool's and everything passes. Does anybody have an idea of what it could have been?

    Hi Russ B;
It sounds like a capacitor in your power supply blew. It is possible that for it continue to function if the capacitor opened. I would not trust the G5 after that experience. I would suggest backing up everything with a clone and bringing it in for service.

  • Mysterious popping noises and dropouts

I have a very new iMac with 8 GB of memory so I doubt system performance is a part of my troubles, but Logic 9.1.1 keeps giving me trouble on a project I'm working on. In a few places on the song, the audio on a couple tracks drops out for a few milliseconds and then back in. This isn't due to compression or limiting or anything and I have attempted raising the buffer size, turning on/off low latency mode, and nothing seems to matter. There is now also a quiet pop that occurs in just two places in a long trumpet accompanying part.
Needless to say this is incredibly frustrating. Oh, also, this happens on headphones and on studio monitors.
    Any ideas?

And since you are from cupertino, maybe knock on the door of your neighbour...

You can take it to either.
I would suggest making an appointment at the Genius Bar ( Apple Store)

  • Ichat and imac accounts - help!

I've had my MacBook 2 years now and set up accounts originally with the free trail of .mac - I never used the email because I had other accounts and didn't want one linked specifically to my laptop, but now I want to ichat with apple friends in UK and can't use it because my password and name isn't being accepted. Is this because the .mac free trail ran out? Do I have to pay before I can use ichat and email?? Can't I use these functions without paying $$? I have high speed with Telus.

Create a free AIM account and use a service such as Gmail or that provided by your ISP for email.

  • I Have a soft popping sound coming out of my 2009 mini....

I am using the some BA MM 220 external speakers on this early 2009 mini...and about every 45-90 seconds i hear a soft popping sound. It does not matter what levels the mini is set too, or what levels the speakers are set too...i get this single soft pop every minute or so....

Mine is not a mini problem...it happens without it being even attached to the computer. So its either a speaker problem, like maybe the power supply/amplifier has issues, or its a problem with my power lines.
I just picked up a couple of those x10 pro plug adapters that might solve the problem, They are designed to filter out power line noise...i'll let you know if they work.

  • Snap crackle pop noices from iMac 27

Brand new 27" making intermittent snap crackle pop sounds around the speaker area.
Is it faulty electronics?   I am planning on taking back to store for an exchange.
Does anyone else expereince this with a late 12/13 iMac?

    Hello dawg,
im experiencing this one too.. bought my brand new 27 inch imac and then 3 days later i hear this crackle pop noise around the speaker area. it gets less when im on the imac for about half an hour and disappears pretty much from there on.i've wondered if this is caused by the imac's external case heating up? bu the applecare employees say this can't be the case. so if somebody could tell hifidawg and me if this problem is just because we have the first ones with baby sickness or what? really leaning t,.wards asking for a new one later on... now just wait and cee if more people get this problem..

  • Popping noise after 10.4.10 update

I have a speaker system plugged into my MacBook, and immediately after I updated to 10.4.10, I started hearing this little popping noise every couple of minutes through my speakers. It's the kind of thing you wouldn't even notice if there's any background noise, but it can be extremely annoying if you're working and it just keeps coming up randomly.
Has anyone else noticed this? I've tried to isolate it to being caused by an application, but it seems to happen even when nothing else is running.
Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

    Hi
Plenty of threads by the look of it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=10.4.10+popping
As far as I can tell, it happens to people with external speakers. I have no external speakers at all, no popping.

  • How do you solve popping noise??

Does anyone have a solution, or can suggest a course of action to address the popping noise that occurs when my macbook Pro's speaker turns on, say when launching a song from itunes. It is not super annoying yet. But it would be nice to solve. Is this a 10.4.8 thing or software glitch, or hardware related. I have a new MBPCD2 2.16

Are there any technicians from apple that review these forums? I have the issue of the popping noise and was very concerned, but it make sense that for power saving that the speakers get de-energized.
    Should I be concerned?
I just bought this MBP. You think that something that costs this much, wouldn't have this kind of issue. I've been faithful to PC for 15 years and finally converted to MAC because I was getting tired of PC issues (like this) It is extremely pleasing to fire up my mac and not have to work on it, check virus definitions. I kinda don't know what to do with my time now!!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Pop Noise from Audio Out While Using iTunes 9.0.1

I have a black MacBook with Leopard 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0.1. I have a a pair of computer speakers plugged to the MacBook's audio out minijack. Every time I run iTunes to play my music everything goes fine until I stop the music (you know with the space bar or the stop button). 30 seconds after I stop the music a loud pop noise comes up and stops, as if some electrical device was receiving a charge of electricity. When I play music back again on iTunes, the same noise comes up again with the music and goes away immediately while the music continues all right.
This is what I have done so far:
Change my energy saving parameter to several different configurations (perhaps the hard drive stopping when unused was the cause) but none fix it.
Turned off Airport...did not fix it
I timed the pop noise and it happens exactly 30 seconds after I stop my music on iTunes and then again 30 seconds after music has been stopped unless I start playing the music back again and the pop noise sounds again.
Any help would be appreciated as I use my MacBook to play music sequences for my band (I am the drummer) so the darn noises come through our PA system (and I also tried my small computer speakers and it does the same thing).
    Thanks,

I spent a good amount of time reading several discussions. Apple is aware of this issue but no solution as of yet. The popping noise is "normal" behavior and happens because of how the sound system is programmed in the computer.
The solution (sorry for the bad news) is to not use the audio out minijack at all. Instead, get an audio interface that connects to your USB port and then route the output signal from your audio interface to your speakers, headphones or PA system. The popping noise will not sound. I tested it several times.
If the only cable you have is a minijack male type then go to Radio Shack and get adapters. I had to get me an adapter that takes two RCA males and converts them to a female minijack type.
    Good luck.

  • Noises and

So, I JUST had my I-pod returned to me after I had an issue with it making a loud, buzzing noise. Along with an issue with the screen just flashing when I plugged it in, rather than displaying ANY error message. The document that came back with the I-pod said that there was essentially nothing wrong with it and that all they had to do was run the I-pod updater and it was fixed. I plugged it in, and everything seemed as if it had been fixed. No more buzzing and it actually turned on. So I left it on the charger, and went to sleep with the intention of loading songs onto it this very morning.
    The problem returned.
I woke up to hear a loud buzzing noise and to see my screen off again. I disconnected it and reconnected it to get a flashing screen. No error message, no nothing. Just the buzzing noise and a screen that only flashed when I tried to connect it. I tried resetting it multiple times, to no avail. I restarted the computer...again, no dice. I tried connecting to a different USB port twice. Nope. I tried all the R's and STILL it won't work.
I figure that I would have a better chance of getting help here, than on their customer service line. Which, by the way, don't call. I felt like I was talking to not only a brick wall but someone who barely spoke my language (which was almost entirely true).
If anyone knows anything about this issue, it is greatly appreciated if your knowledge is imparted to this topic so I can lay this issue to rest and actually get to use my Nano...which I haven't had the chance to do yet.
    Sincerely,
Irritated first-time Apple Customer (Possibly last-time)

Gooze - take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
I've not heard of this problem but one thing is clear: the iPod isn't responsive at the moment. When this happens the trick is to just disconnect it from the computer and/or charger and let it discharge. This may take 24 hours but probably much less. Don't recharge it until it is doing an imitation of a thin brick...we want the iPod to be totally discharged because this will bring it out of the insanity it is currently experiencing. Now connect it to the charger/computer and let it recharge for a while. The problem will probably have disappeared and your computer should see the iPod again. It would probably be a good idea to perform a restore again.
Assuming this (temporarily) solves your problem the burning question is—what is happening to cause this? You left it on the charger overnight. So what happens if you leave it on the charger overnight again...same thing? This is important info to pass on to Apple. Nothing happens? Ouch! I hate when I run into a problem I can't reliably reproduce.
Since I've seen exactly 2 references to this problem (yours and the post immediately below yours) I suspect this is a pretty rare problem. If it happens again the more information you can pass on to Apple - the sooner they can get to the root cause and fix it.
