It could be hard drive noise. You might want to try running SMART Utility:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a comprehensive view of the physical health of your drive. It seems to be somewhat more sensitive than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner.
If you haven't already, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test--always a good thing to do with a used machine.
Good luck!

  • IMac from 2009. Suddenly making noise like a loud fan.

My IMac from 2009 is suddenly making noise like a very loud fan, or a little like a vacuum cleaner. The sound seems to becoming from the IMac, not my speakers.  Could this be from any of the wires or connections plugged into it?  Restarting the computer did not stop this. I think this happened once before a long time ago. Anything I can do?

Before I saw Mike Sombrio's post:
I restarted the IMac without unplugging the power cord, but the noise was still there when the IMac came back on.  Then I repeated this about 10 minutes later, (restarting the computer without unplugging the power cord). This time the noise was no longer there. I don't know what's going on. I hope this problem does not return. Any explanations? Is this a sign that my IMac is having serious problems? Any advice?

  • Strange noise (like a clock Tik Tak) from my Intel iMac

    Hello everybody...
So, in the last few days i got a very strange experience from my (usuall great) iMac.
I started to notice that I hear a strange noise around my desk, and figured out it comes from my iMac. Strange as it may be, it sounds as if u put your ears on a Swatch watch when its all quite at night, and all u can hear is the Tik Tak or something liek that....
The mac also became really slow, freezing from time to time, so i thought backup and reinstalling viia the Apple Dvd is a good idea. The mac is faster now, but the voice stayed.
So after i made sure It is a noise from the iMac, (disconnecting all devices, moving it to other rooms and so on...) and appears in any user, i contacted Apple Chat and got adviced to reset Nvram and SMC, which i did both, along with Apple Hardware Test, nothing helped, no error in the test, so was told to go to the Apple lab ....
Since I really can not afford "losing" my mac for 14 days, as i use it for my studies in uni, i would appreciate first that someone is actually reading so far my message and mayb omeone else has / had or heard about this problem and can assist me with....
Thank you very much for any info.......
    Elad

Well, I read your message, but I have no idea what could be causing the issue. If none of the standard troubleshooting remedies solved the issue then an Apple tech needs to "hear" your Mac, especially if it's loud enough to bother you.
Perhaps you got the Mac with the secret internal geothermal nuclear device.
    When it stops ticking...

  • Strange noise (like an alarm) upon start-up

I have a 20" aluminum iMac and it has been my most unstable Mac ever. I have numerous issues with it...shutting down in the middle of the night and having to unplug it to restart...walking up to it and having a large graphic in the middle of the screen say, "you need to restart your computer"...and don't even get me going on the color shifts with this glossy screen! However, the reason for my post today is that when I start-up the iMac, after holding down the button for what seems like forever (5 seconds?) and nothing has happened, I let go thinking that it's just not going to start. When I let go, I hear this horrible alarm-type sound and then the familiar Mac chime. Does anyone know what this means?? Is it bad??
    Thanks everyone:)
    Ann

Have you tried running the Hardware Test from the install DVD that came with your iMac?

  • MBP 17" makes noise when opening app or scrolling internet site - not harddrive (using SSD)

    Hi,
my computer makes a strange noise - like a rumble sound (like a harddrive when it is writing / reading something). So I really thought it would be the harddrive and I did not pay to much attention to it since I wanted to upgrade it to a SSD anyway.
But after I upgraded the sound continued and it drives me nuts. I did already all resets (VRAM, PMU) but it is still there.
Other forums said it could be an interference with the soundcard and should be heard through headphones as well, but when I do so I can't hear anything through the headphones. It still comes from the computer case somewhere which is hard to locate since it is not very loud but still noticeable in a quiet environment. And still loud enough to bother me since I work without music.
In addition I thought it is something with the power supply.
I am using the 85W Power Supply that came with it. I even tried another one from my MacBook Pro 13" (60W) with same results and one from my old MacBook Pro 15" first Intel also (60W) the only difference with the one from the 15" that I hear a whining sound, high pitch noise coming from the upper left side of the case where the power supply is plugged in. I think that is just because it is an old plug.
Can anyone help me? Anyone having a similar Problem?
    Thank You!

  • AP54G generates a strange noise while operating

    Hello guys!
Is that normal, that my MSI AP54G Access Point generates a silent, strange noise (like a TV when there's no signal), while it is operating? I noticed it one or two days ago and I don't know, whether it is a normal thing or not. Ummm... I think, I have to tell you, that some days ago I dropped the AP (accidentally) from about one meter high... so I think that can be the reason why the AP emits such a strange noise. Anyway, it is operating perfectly, it has a very strong and stable signal and I'm fully satisfied with it, but I'm afraid, that this noise could cause some trouble in the future, for example burn down the AP or even explode it?
    Thanks for your help!
    Greetings:
    Gery

    Thanks... you are very helpful...
Don't you guys use this AP? I'm the only one, who uses it? Well, I think not.
And what about you guys working for MSI?? You don't read the forum of your own company??

  • MacBook Pro makes strange noises

My MacBook Pro recently started to make strange noises like an elecyticity cable was sparkling. Today I closed the screen to move it and started to make a greater sound like an old ventilator when I opened back then it went into sleeping, can somebody tell me what is happening?
    Thanks

I think I had the same problem as you on a 13" MBP. After the grinding noise, did your laptop suddenly make a really fast whooshing sound? If that's what you're experiencing, there might be a broken ball bearing in your fan. In that case, you have to take it to an Apple Store and get that replaced.

Más cosas... Se trata de los ventiladores. Quizá les falte aceite !
    http://www.macbetagroup.com/?p=18
Por cierto, te puedes descargar la aplicación freeware SMC Fan Control, con la que podrás regular la velocidad de los tres ventiladores que tiene el iMac Intel Core Duo. De esta manera también desaparecen los ruidos que mencionas.

More news... The noise comes from the fans. Maybe they need oil !
    http://www.macbetagroup.com/?p=18
By the way, you can download the freeware app SMC Fan Control. It will allow you fan speed control of your iMac Intel Core Duo. It's also a way to make disappear these chirping noises.

  • Dual Core Center runs with strange noises

    Hello
I just bought a new PC: MSI P45NEO-F (Motherboard) and GALAXY 9600GT (Graphic Card).
I installed Dual Core Center since it was provided as an utility software.
As soon as  Dual Core Center is running, strange noises come out from the speakers and they never stop until I close the application. I have to switched off the speaker because it is unbearable. Except the sound from the speakers, computers is working OK. Even Dual Core Center with this noise seems to work.
I am not an expert at all.
Does anyone had this problem or would know where it comes from ?
Computer seems to work OK when Dual Core center is not running.
    Thanks

    Hello
I just had another look at my problem and I noticed that one of the figure displayed in Dual Core Center was in red. It is the fan speed of system1 in the Fan Menu: the number in red was 995 RPM. As soon as the figure goes above 1000 (it does happen from time to time) the figure becomes green and the strange noise stops.
I have two fans in my computer: the CPU fans whose speed is around 1530 and the System1 fan whose speed is around 995 RPM. There are some setup in the BIOS regarding Fans but I guess everything is properly setup.
Anyway is there anything wrong with a fan system1 speed below 1000 ? Why would Dual Core center put the figure in red in that case and make a noise as a warning ?
    Thanks for your help/advices.

  • Strange noise coming from headphone port on Macbook Pro

    Hi all
I have recently bought a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4gh Intel Core 2 Duo, and was browsing through my iTunes looking for something to play... I had plugged into the headphone jack my pair of BOSE around-ear headphones and could hear a strange noise that sounded like electrical interference. I can only hear it when nothing is playing through the headphones, like the situation I mentioned above. And i know it is a problem exclusive to my MBP as it does not happen on my iMac, iPhone, iPod ect.... any ideas what may be causing it, of how to get it to stop....?
    Thanks

    Hello
I have the same problem. I can't use my Sennheiser / V-Moda inear headphones because of that noise. I changed the MacBook, but the noise is still the same. I spent one hour talking to one guy from AppleCare and we came to the conclusion that headphones with low impedance (16 Ohm for the headphones mentioned above) are not working properly with the new MacBook Pro.
What do you think ? Is this possible ?
The solution for me was to buy a Logitech speaker system with external audio jack... and it works fine now (speaker and headphones)!
I'm a new Mac user and I'm quite disappointed about this audio issue. I really didn't expect Apple to have troubles with a headphone jack...
    Thanks for your feedback.

  • Strange noise from my macbook pro 13" retina

    Hi everyone,
I got a problem with my new macbook pro retina 13"... I bought it last week and I already got problems with it!
When I'm using it, I can hear sometimes strange noises. I made a video showing from where the sound is from and you can hear this noise.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3f7blKARMY
The strangest thing is that the only parts in this computer that are moving are the fans and it doesn't seem to be the fans causing this sound (it would be more regular).
    Thanks for helping me!

In light of the age of the MBP, I suggest you pack it up and go to the Apple store and return/exchange it for a new one.  Problem solved!
    Ciao.

  • MBP 1,1: strange noises, battery failure

My MBP 1,1 (SL, 64GB Samsung SSD) recently started to make strange noises from within. It's hard to decribe, but it sounds like rapid crackling, like a hard disk put into overdrive (however a SSD is installed). Along with that, there's a high-pitched monotonous  sound.
The noise is the loudest somewhere between the ExpressCard cage and the battery multiconnector cable.
Further, when the Mac is running solely on  battery power (without the MagSafe being connected), power suddenly goes off without any warning. Although fully charged the battery LED blinks indicating it's empty.
    What I tried so far:
    - SMC reset
    - deleted power management plist
    - deleted caches
    - AHT - ok!
    - safe boot
    - second battery
    - checked connectors inside
    - disconnected fans
What could that be? My guess is the I/O-Board. Or could a malfunctioning logicboard produce such sounds?
    Thanks!

Since computers should not be making crackling sounds, that would be a good candidate to backup all of your data and have the apple techs at the genius bar run some diagnostics to see what is not working right.  Could be a loose connection that does not show up on AHT.

  • Strange Noise from MSI GTX 770 Gaming

I recently bought a MSI GTX 770 Gaming and it makes a strange noise. It doesn't sound like coil whine to me, more of a clicking. I also don't think its the fans as it makes the exact same noise regardless of fan speeds. However, it does seem directly related to load, the higher the clock speed the louder it gets.
See the below video for the noise, if you listen carefully you can hear towards the end where it transitions from high load -> low load -> high light again.
    Should I be concerned?

    Board:        Asus P6T Deluxe v2
    VGA:           MSI GTX 770 Gaming
    PSU:           Corsair HX750 +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V@62A, [email protected], +5VSB@3A
    Processor:  Intel Core i7 920 @ 4.0
    MEM:          Corsair Dominator 1600 3x2gb
    HDD:          Samsung Pro 256gb SSD
    COOLER:   Corsair H80i
    OS:            Windows 7 64bit Professional
It is definitely not the fans. The noise is irrelevant to fan speed. Also, did you copy the youtube link? I've heard coil whine and this does not sound the same. It's strange and seems to be coming from the PCB.
