I hear mixed messages about Mavericks - do I need it? Currently on Snow Leopard

I read and hear mixed feedback on Mavericks. I am curently on Snow Leopard. I read that it's best to stay on Leopard until fixes are applied to Mavericks. The main concern or negativity about Mavericks is that it is slow. Question, stay or upgrade. I am sure that this debate has gone on before. If someone can to point to an outcome or a discussion thread. Thanks.

You will always see this with any major version release
of any operating system, OSX or Windows.
I read that it's best to stay on Leopard until fixes are applied to Mavericks.
At this point, Mavericks is probably as stable as any other version of OSX.
A large majority of issues stem from 3rd party app or 3rd party hardware
comapatibility issues.  Make sure everything you have is compatible or
you are willing to upgrade the items to be compatible.
The main concern or negativity about Mavericks is that it is slow.
Again, this is likely 3rd party incompatibility issues.  There may be some
initial slowness (as is true anytime OSX is upgrade) until Spotlight indexes
all the files on the drive(s).  Personally, my 2011 MiniServer and my 2011
13" MBP run great on Mavericks.
Question, stay or upgrade.
That is something you need to answer yourself.  As others
have said, if you don't want or need any of the new features
and are happy with everything as it is, "if it ain't broke, don't
fix it."
Otherwise, go ahead and upgrade.  A word of warning, as is true
with any major OS upgrade, anything can go wrong (Murphy's Law),
so make sure that you make backups of all important data (which you should
be doing anyway).

It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • HT201364 I currently have Snow Leopard and want to update to Mavericks

I currently have Snow Leopard and want to update to Mavericks. When I go to the Apple Store the only available option is to download Yosemite but I don't want to.
Where can I find a download link for Mavericks?

Probably nowhere, and unless Apple says otherwise, definitely nowhere.

  • Why I cannot assess deleted Apple mail messages in time machine after installing mountain lion from snow leopard.

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, I cannot retrieve my deleted Apple mail messages from Time Machine.  I could do it in the past using Snow Leopard.  The effective date for the the non-retrival of deleted messages is the date I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard.  Any thoughts?

I'm still not sure what you mean . . . is it listed in the "On My Mac" section in Mail's sidebar, like these?
Mountain Lion appears to have given it an icon very much like an Archive box and put the "on My Mac" folder within that "Box" on both the back ups and the new Mail program - in fact it did it 6 times, which was the origional problem.
    Can you post a screenshot?
I could restore inbox messages although they came in as a new mail box called Time Machine rather than into their origional mailboxes (there are 7 different addresses)
Yes, that's how Time Machine restores Mail messages, so it doesn't erase the current contents of an existing mailbox.  You can then move them into the desired location.

Yes. Firefox 29.0.1 works fine in Mavericks.

If the Microsoft Office is 2004 then no.
    Mavericks System requirements.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5842
Note I would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You need to check all you software and hardware including any peripherlas you use, printers etc that they are compatible with Mavericks.
Any software that is PPC and uses Rossetta will not work with any OS X verson later than 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
If you decide to upgrade have a tested backup of your current system in case of problems and you could return the computer to its previous configuration.

  • If I have backed-up my Macbook while using Time Machine with Mavericks, can I erase my drive, install Snow Leopard, then re-load my Mavericks backup from Time Machine?

Hi there. This is my first time using this community, so thanks for reading. It pretty much says it all up there on the top. I backed up my computer with Time Machine while using Mavericks OS. For the sake of optimizing my computer and giving it a fresh start, I want to erase my drive and re-boot it with Snow Leopard, which I have a disc for. Once all that is done and I have a "brand-new" computer, will I be able to reload my Time Machine back-up?? Thanks!!

  • Text messages in Safari are garbled on Mac Pro after Snow Leopard install

When reading or composing my Yahoo mail text messages in Safari on my Mac Pro after Snow Leopard, the wording is very garbled. Looks like o's, s's, c's, some caps, with lots of spaces intermixed. Messages look ok on Firefox, on same machine. New messages and reading sent messages look ok on my MacBook and MB Air. When cutting and pasting into something else (like this window), the text looks fine. I can compose and send messages that look garbled, but the right words and letters go out. HTML messages look ok. Any clues for solution?

I have this happening in bunch of different HTML pages. Here's a screenshot of the same page in Safari (Version 4.0.3 (6531.9)) and Mac OS X 1.6.1 side by side with Camino:
    https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/362958/miscwebimages/Screen%20shot%202009-09-22%20at%2018.35.47.png
Camino renders the page correctly. Safari is really unusable with this problem. Tried switching to and from 64-bit mode in Safari, didn't help either.

    octopi,
My guess is the OP is using Logic Pro 8 and that version isn't compatible with Mavericks....(10.9.x)
Only solution is to roll back to the previous configuration from backups... or start again from scratch installing OS X 10.8.5 or earlier... and LP8 (8.0.2 is the best version)
Personally I would use OS X 10.6.8 and Logic Pro 8.0.2 as that was a very stable combination (If indeed, the OP has Logic Pro 8)

  • How do I upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard in the attempt to upgrade to Mavericks?

Upgrading to Snow Leopard on my desktop iMac? I eventually want to go up to Mavericks.

Assuming your system is able to run Mavericks, you will need to buy the Snow Leopard upgrade DVD directly from Apple. It is available on their on-line store, for example if you are in the US the link would be:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Once you have SL installed download and install SL Update Combo located at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
which will get you to the most current verison of SL. Next run Sotware Update and install recommended updates. Once you have done these steps then you can download Mavericks and install.
Remember if you have any apps that are PPC based they will not run in Mavericks, you will need to upgrade or replace them.
Remember to have a solid backup of your system prior to updating. And it is recommended to have 4GB or more of RAM installed.
