I hooked up an external terabyte drive to my computer that infected it.

This virus or worm is grabbing and destroying video, music and image files.  I lost half of Breaking Bad, Season 4.  It took half of the Season on my main computer and destroyed the backup on the external drive.
I'm beginning to think this malware is looking for tv shows on computers and archiving them. It destroys them in the process just to be malicious.
Has anyone experienced or heard about this?

DVDs and CSs operate at different wavelengths and all drives on the market use separate LED lasers for the DVD and CD functions. It's not uncommon for one LED to fail while the other still operates. Before replacing the drive, through, try running a CD lens cleaner through the drive for a few passes. DVD and CD LEDs in all cases I'm aware of run through different lenses, so it's possible your drive's CD lens has enough grime on it to prevent it from working while the DVD lens is still relatively clear.
If that doesn't fix the problem, then it's easy to attach an external optical drive and use that. Go with Firewire; while your 1.25 GHz eMac has USB 2.0, USB driver support is more problematic while Firewire support is pretty solid. A Firewire drive will also allow you to use the external drive as a boot device per Startup Manager: Select a Startup Volume.
OS X 10.3 and later will support disc burning to an external drive from the Finder, so you don't even need additional software such as Toast (although an optical drive bundled with Toast will give you more control over disc burning than what's built into the Finder).

  • Can't download iOS 5 to my old iPhone 4 - I get an error message saying I don't have enough space on my computer, but I know that I do.  How can upload successfully?  Or can I hook up an external hard drive to ENSURE I have enough space? If so, how?

I just tried to download the new iOS 5 software during my sync with iTunes on my computer to my iPhone 4, however, I got an error message saying that I did not have enough space on my computer to continue (even though I am pretty sure I do).  It offered me the choice of deleting much of the media on my iPhone in order to continue, which of course I declined.
How can I ensure that I have enough space on my computer to download the new iOS 5 software?  I don't want to delete anything on my computer and I have already defragged.  Can I just hook up an external hard drive which I am certain has enough space?  If so, how can I ensure that iTunes recognizes the external hard drive as the drive that it should be downloading the software to?
    Thanks

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • How do I transfer data from external hard drive to new computer

We had been using a PC with XP that had four different users and ITune libraries.   It was attacked by viruses that got deep in op system and could not be fixed.   We purchased a new PC with Windows 8.   I had transfered the itune files by copying them from the hard drive to a external hard drive.    Is there a way to transfer the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes that I just downloaded onto the new computer.   I thought that it would be as easy as copying the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes file on the new computer but this did not work.   If I go into iTunes and select copy file from library it will import the file just file but I really don't want to copy thousands of files one by one.   However, when I try to open those files I get an error message.    We have two iPads and four iPod Touches.   Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I found a posted answer from someone else who asked the same question and it worked.   It said to copy the entire file that was saved on the external hard drive to the my music folder before ever opening ITunes that was newly installed and it worked.

Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

  • HT4914 My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance

My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance?

I followed all the instructions for consolidating my music into one folder on my external hard drive. (I'm struggling with this because my ext HD was renamed when I synched my iPod shuffle last night. The "E:" drive has now become the "F:" drive and all my songs have those dreaded exclamation points next to them. Exploring my computer, I found "My music" folders in two place on my C: drive and one place on my external hard drive... and the song list in each place is different.
    Argh.
So... following the directions in the article reference here, I attempted to consolidate all of my songs into one folder on my external hard drive.
But.. I checked the song list when the "consolidation" was complete... and MANY songs are missing. They're still on the C: drive, but don't appear to have been copied to the new folder on the ext HD.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks so much!
Edit: I tried to reassign the ext. HD a permanent letter, but my Control panel does not appear to offer the option of Administrative tools. Is there an easy way to get to this, as this seems to be the root of the problem?
    Thanks.

  • I have a Leopard DL disk & bought an external CD drive, but I read that I can't install through USB?

I also have a Leopard DL disk and having the same problem with my eMac. I bought an external CD drive, but I read that I can't install through USB. Why is that? Would a USB A female to FireWire IEEE 1394 6P converter work? Or do I have to buy another CD drive with a FireWire? Please help.
    PS
Can you also please explain how to boot from an external drive? (CD drive and storage device). Is there even a way to save the disks content to an external memory device and install it from there?

    Hi,
Very few PPC Macs can boot from USB, most require Firewire... BUT, all 3 of my eMacs can & do boot from USB, try holding the alt or option key at bootup.
A USB<->FW converter will not work.

  • Saving music to an external hard drive thru itunes so that its not stored on my already overloaded macbook, but plays thru i tunes when i hook up the external hard drive

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro, and sooooo much music the hard drive is already full and i'm not halfway thru importing all my cds, I have hooked up a 2TB external hard drive and used it to back up my hard drive with time machine but i want to use the remaining space on the external drive to store every cd that i have so i can become a cd free household. How do I copy music onto my hard drive thru itunes so it adds to my library but runs off my external hard drive rather than my already over loaded internal hard drive?
also is there a way of selecting music already on my hard drive to be shipped over to the external hard drive to free up space on my macbook, as the lack of disc space occasionally causes problems working on dj programmes and garage band when i am recording large files o my hard drive in realtime as i am making them.

Yes you can. Open iTunes preferences and select advanced. In the iTunes Media folder location use your external location.

  • What is the circled number one under my drive icon on the desktop? I recently hooked up an external LaCie drive and hope I didn't partition my main drive somehow by mistake.

I noticed after installing an external LaCie Drive, that a circled number 1 appears under my drive icon on the desktop that was never there before. I have a iMac G5. I go to Disk Utility at times to erase or burn a disk. Could I have somehow partitioned my hard drive or what / why is that number appearing or is it normal? Thanks and I hope I didn't screw up the drive cause I'm a newbie and would hate to have to delete and reinstall. Could I have a tired machine? I have lots of GB's left and machine at times acts strange like will record something and default it to iMovie slide show unless I wasn't careful what file was open at the time. Can you tell me what the number means?

Try renameing it, but you might also check this...
n Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.
