I imported 30 minutes of DV tape and it takes 90 minutes to process it?

I imported 30 minutes of video from a DV tape, and it has been processing it for 70 minutes so far and it says it has 40 minutes to go?  Is this right?

DV should import in real time.
HDV would take longer than real time, because the MPEG2 of HDV is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.
After the import, there would be a time of generating thumbnails, this might take a few minutes.
If you have the preference to analyze for image stabilization turned on, then this process will begin after the thumbnails are created. This process can be lengthy.
I would suggest that you open the Activity Monitor. Select the iMovie process and then click the Inspect button.
Look to see if there are any recent hangs. If this number is zero, you are probably OK. It is just analyzing for stabilization.  If there is a positive number in "recent hangs", it may mean that you are in a loop and might want to force quit iMovie and try again.

  • Importing of Analog Hi-8 tape and then editing.  How?

I'm really confused by video editing. My son is turning 16 in two weeks. I want to create a movie of scenes from him growing up. Everything is stored on anaglog hi-8 video tape. Here's my questions:
    1. I have an external dvd burner. I can hook my Sony camera up via RCA components (it doesn't have firewire) and burn a dvd of each tape. If I do that, will the dvd be something I can edit in iMovie 09?
    2. Elgato has a video converter box which allows me to plug my camera directly into my Mac. Would that be a better (but not cheaper) solution?
    3. How much disk space is required to import a 2 hour movie on tape?
    4. Will iMovie work well to take selected segments from the tapes, DVD's, or direct imports or do I need something more powerful.
    Thanks! I appreciate your help.

This will work, but you are adding another generation of data loss to the process. iMovie will not directly edit DVDs, which are encoded in MPEG2 format. So after burning the DVD, you have to convert the MPEG2 files on the DVD to a format that iMovie can edit, like DV or Apple Intermediate Codec. You could do this by using MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2Component ($20)
    2. Elgato has a video converter box which allows me to plug my camera directly into my Mac. >Would that be a better (but not cheaper) solution?
I have an EyeTV Hybrid from ElGato, and it works well. ElGato EyeTV allows you to export the file to iMovie in either DV or AIC as appropriate.
Another way would be to get a digital 8 camera from EBAY. Most digital 8 cameras will convert hi 8 to DV, and you can import via firewire. Check this before you buy to make sure it has the conversion feature.
    3. How much disk space is required to import a 2 hour movie on tape?
It will take about 8GB to import into EyeTV. When you export from EyeTV to iMovie it will get bigger.
    4. Will iMovie work well to take selected segments from the tapes, DVD's, or direct imports or do I >need something more powerful.
iMovie does well at this. I have imported events from VHS, hi8, 8MM film (via VHS), DV, and AVCHD and combined them into one movie.

  • Is there a way to import videos from old VHS tapes so that they can be later accessible to processing with imovie?

Is there any way to import videos from old VHS tapes so that thry can later be processed by imovie?

I recently got a new  iPhone, and after restoring all my stuff from my old iPhone via the iTunes restore thing, I had to put all my music on manually, instead of it being restored.
iTunes content is not included with your iPhone's backup - no music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, audio and print books, tones, and apps. All iTunes content must be transferred back to your iPhone when restoring. If you sync music with Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, music is transferred back to your iPhone from your iTunes library when syncing - syncing is followed after the iPhone is restored. If you manually manage music and videos with this selected under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, you must manually drag all music from your iTunes library back to your iPhone. Manually manage music means manually all the way.

You cannot install the apps on the car.
The cars head unit is merely acting as an interface to the apps on the device.
If you want to use those apps in the car, plug the device in and leave it plugged in.

  • How can I import video from a VHS tape onto my mac and into imovie?

I am trying to take old family movies that are on VHS tapes and get them into imovie so i can edit them and burn DVDs

I recommend the EyeTV Hybrid from ElGato. It will do what you ask and also serve as a high-def TV Tuner and DVR.
More good options in this [MacWorld Article|http://www.macworld.com/article/143545/2009/10/vhscapturetools.html]
Another option is to buy a digital camcorder with a Pass-thru option.
A final option is a digital analog converter like those sold by Canopus. These are expensive.

  • Can't Import more than one DV tape. (Sony DCR-PC120E)

Importing video from my Sony DCR-PC120E camcorder works with the first DV tape and then stop working with following tapes.
Only workaround is to reboot the Mac.
All Transports keys are working except the play command either in manual or automatic mode.
In automatic mode, the tape rewind fine but doesn't play.
All software are up to date. (iMovie 7.1.4, MacOS 10.5.4, QT 7.5.5)
    Any idea ?

I did read that the firewire port stays powered even while my Mac Pro is off, and that is why the main power supply must be disconnected in order to fully reset the port, but this is apparently not necessary as a restart (not even shutdown, just restart) allows me to import another DV tape.
Perhaps the better question is to ask what is being reset with my computer that allows me to import another DV.
Apparently the port stays active, so it isn't the port.
Its not the camera, I've tried power cycling it while the machine is on with no change.
Its not the iMovie preference file, it doesn't change at all when the computer is restarted.
Something seems to be running in the background on the operating system itself (10.5.2), or a remnant from iMovie even after program quit that remembers it had control of my camera.
Since it doesn't seem that everyone has this problem (only select DV players/camcorders), it would seem that it is somehow related to my specific model of camera. But as it is not the camera itself (else the power cycle of the camera should resolve), perhaps it is the driver OSX is using to connect to my camera?
Does anyone know a way to, in a sense, "force quit" a stubborn driver instance?

  • I've imported a lot of 8mm tape into a single project. I need to split off

I imported many hours of 8mm tape into iMovie. There are about 40 clips now and I want to split the 40 clips into about 7 different projects to edit individually. I don't want to re-import the 8mm tapes (read: I want to safely split off the clips without losing valuable import time).

Now that you have one project go to the clip you want, select it, then go to share, select Full Quality, click the box selected clips, save the name and it will make a dv file with those clips. Then after you have all the clips into a seperate folder start IMovie, create new project and drag the clips you want for that movie. It does take time to write clips into new file. You also need a good amount of drive space.

Thank you Russ! Seems as though the timestamp on my audio files was completely incorrect so it placed the files far away from the corresponding video. I've modified the timestamp information and this has helped. The hour/minute information is incorrect but at least now I'm in the ballpark. Thank you!

  • IMovie quits importing with gaps in VHS tape

I'm using a Canopus ADVC110 to import old family VHS tapes into iMovie, and the import will quit whenever there are gaps in the VHS tape.  Unfortunately there are many gaps, because it was our habit to separate clips that way.  Is there an iMovie setting to prevent the import from quitting?  I currently have to sit with every tape I'm importing to identify where it quits, and the start a new import, repeatedly, and it's frustrating.  I'd rather edit clips once the whole tape has imported.  Thanks for advice!

I'm using a Canopus ADVC110 to import old family VHS tapes
The Grassvalley ADVC300 will fix this.
The Grassvalley ADVC300 will "fill in" any missing time codes from tape.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.  ( iMovie HD 06 is the best to import VHS tapes. )
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The ADVC300 has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer.  You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
For sale on Amazon and eBay.

  • Problem importing "still" images from DV tape

    (Setup: iMovie 9, OS X 10.58, Pansonic NV-GS250)
    Hello everyone,
I m trying to solve the following problem:
I need to edit (fades, overdub etc.) a movie which has been mastered by someone else.
The DV tape I am trying to import has a lot of "still" sequences that were generated as follows:
    - The source DV tape was paused while the target (master) DV recorder was recording e.g. for five seconds.
This works fine on the resulting DV tape: The paused frame from the source tape is shown e.g. for five secs, then the next "real" clip is shown seamlessly.
However, upon import from the camera/master tape, iMovie discards these pseudo-still images: They show up as 0 kB files in the event folder.
This happens both with manual and automatic import.
I do not have access to the source material, i.e. the raw tapes and clips that were used this way. This means I cannot "rebuild" these discarded clips.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem - i.e. have iMovie recognize these clips that are actually paused source material?
Or is this something that would require Final Cut? Or may a third-party tool? I would send a few bucks if necessary.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
thank you for replying, but I probably didn't describe the problem properly ...
You suggest dragging a clip from the event into the project and then creating a Still Frame from it.
I cannot do this because iMovie will not import these clips *at all* - i.e., they are not physically present on the Mac although they show up on screen during import.
    Here is what happens:
    - Let's say I have three clips on my Digital Video Tape:
    - the first is a short, "real" scene,
    - the second was generated by pausing the source camcorder and recording this paused frame on the master camcorder for a few seconds
    - the third is another "real" scene.
The resulting DV master tape (which I am working with) plays back properly on the camcorder: scene 1, scene 2 (a paused frame), scene 3.
When importing this into iMovie, I end up with these files in iMovie's event folder:
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;55;37.dv" 34 MB
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;56;10.dv" 0KB <-
    "clip-2009-07-02 05;51;26.dv" 21 MB
I.e, iMovie discards these clips upon import - so there is nothing to generate a still frame from.
So I need to get around the import problem.
Even a third-party tool for importing such "paused still frame" clips from a DV tape would help. I just need to get them onto the Mac HD.

  • Where did 30GB of unused space on my SSD main drive go?  I have a mid 2011 iMac that until yesterday had just 54GB of space occupied on the primary drive.  I imported 45 minutes of video from an SD card.  Could that have used up the space?

I added an SSD to my 27" 2011 iMac.  Although Sahidus is absolutely correct, it is much easier to add an SSD replacing the optical drive, it wasn't that bad to add it using an entirely seperate cable using SATA-III.  To me it is worth the extra hassle to install a SATA-III SSD.  This is where you are going to get maximum performance.
Although it appears complicated, if you go slow, the procedure to install an SSD drive isn't too bad.  It takes at most 3 hours, as long as you are prepared and have all the parts and tools.
    http://www.btobey.com/learn/imac-ssd-install.php
This describes how I did it.  Now I get awesome data performance from my iMac!
I think the 21.5" may be more difficult to find where to place the SSD.  But im sure it is possible.  Just be creative.

  • FCP 7.01 crashes when importing from a DSR 11 tape deck.

I am trying to import to FCP 7.01 some DV Pal footage from the DSR 11 tape deck. When I play the film it shows in the viewer fine, but if I then click the capture now button it crashes FCP. I have rebooted several times and it has happened about ten times consecutively. Any ideas why? I've been capturing using cards since getting the new system and not needed to do this before, but need to import a dvcam tape and can't do it.

deck is connected via a firewire cable, device control is set to Firewire Pal, capture input DV Pal 48k Anamorphic, 5TB of space on scratch disk available. This is a new system and I have output to the deck fine for a previous job, but now have this issue with importing from the same deck. Crashes FCP every time.

  • IMovie import: AVHD vs. DV Tape

I was shooting years with my Sony DV camera which used tapes. Editing in iMovie was a snap as I imported the scenes I needed and rendering was relatively quick. I thought I should upgrade to the newer hi-Def cameras and went with a Canon AVCHD camera using SDHC cards only. But I notice importing to iMovie is slow, clunky, and takes upo considerable space on my hard-drive. Why is that? I am thinking I should have stuck to DV tapes as it was just simplier/cleaner for the type of home movies I shoot.
Is there any advice for speeding up/making AVCHD imports faster/smaller? Is there another version of iMovie coming out that will improve AVCHD import? Right now, I have a lot of footage on my AVCHD camera that I haven't gotten around to putting on iMovie. Unlike tapes, I am going to run out of room eventually, so any help/advice is appreciated.

Actually, iM does allow importing footage to any connected drive...I use FW800 drives to ensure the fastest imports, if using external HD. Of course, using internal HD is fastest, if space is not an issue.
I recall using the "create archive" option which seemed a tad bit faster, as it just copies the files vs converting them on the fly to AIC (useful when you just want to offload the files to free up space on the cam, but don't need them for editing yet). You'll still have to go thru the process of creating events from the archive later, but I assume that would be faster (depends on CPU).
One other option that seemed faster (for importing to Mac) was to copy the video clips from the cam's internal flash to external hi-speed flash (class 6 SDHC), and then sticking this into a 150x SDHC reader plugged into a USB port...This does increase the overall time for import (copy to Flash + import to Mac), but the second step appears to be faster. Think the built-in Flash may have slower Read speeds.

  • Can I selectively import clips from a DV tape?

i have a couple hours of footage on DV and only need a fraction of the clips. is there any way to import only specific clips... or, is my only option to import the entire tape and then get rid of excess footage once it's in iMovie? if my only option is to import all the footage, is there any way to expedite the importation process? also, is there any way to compress the imported footage so that it doesn't take up so much HD space? lots of Q's here... thanks for any guidance!

Hi TexanMac - yes you can control the import, but only manually, by alternately turning on and off the import button in iMovie. That is a very sensible way to reduce the import size. Carefully preview your tape first, so you know when keepable segments are coming up. In iMovie Preferences you can also control whether or not new clips are created at each scene break. Note that if an imported clip is not used at all, it can be trashed and it disappears from the project entirely. However if even a small portion of a clip is edited into your iMovie, the entire source clip will be retained in the project's media folder, and cannot be removed.
The only way to compress footage is to share the movie, for example to QT, either:
    1. reducing its size and quality (for the web, for example), or
    2. as a full quality QT file (this can be imported back into an iMovie project, though of course any transitions, effects etc will be embedded, rather than still being editable). But it will have got rid of the source files that take up so much space.
    Hope this helps.
