2 computers at home working with the same files i keep on an external hard drive to free up space the internal drives. I have an airport extreme time capsule to back up both computers. how can i get it to back up the hard drive plugged into time capsual?

I want to run both my macbook pro and imac from a single external hard drive.
i bought a time capsual and set it us as my network and plugged my external hard drive into it. so now both my computers can access it and work on the same image and film files. the time capsual does a lovely job of backing up both my computers and my wifes. but i cant get it to back up the external hard drive that is conected to it. ive looked on the forum and it seems to me that its not possible, which seems odd to me that mac would enable you to plug a hard drive into the time capsual but not let you back it up, what is the point in that!?
so my question is can i back up the external hard drive with time machine, and if not how do i set up my home network so that all my computers can access the same files and time machine will back everything up?
I did the upgrade to maverics on my imac which has caused me a major headache as now all my apature albums have been updated to 3.5.1 but my macbook pro can no longer open them because im unable to upgade it to maverics, but thats another story.

The TC for whatever it is promoted as,, is still a simple hard disk in a router. It was designed for laptops to use as a backup. A desktop can use a USB drive, faster cheaper and more reliable than a network drive but the laptops need a network wireless storage. Hence the TC. It is NOT nor was it ever designed to do the job you are trying to use it for.. it is not a NAS.. it has no internal backup.
What is more Time Machine has no ability to backup network drives no matter what their format.
So the solution is to either use a real backup software.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner which can do far more than TM can or ever will. It is around $40 so hardly expensive. But since the TC was never designed for it, this will be slow.. and the next question is where are you going to back to. Using the TC as backup location for your files is less than great. Primarily because all your files are still on the same device albeit on different disk. It is also because mixing data and TM backups is not so great. The TC cannot be partitioned although you can alleviate some of the issues..

Fundamentally the TC is the wrong place to do this.
The right place is to plug the USB drive into the iMac.. since it is a desktop machine and you are probably not lugging it around. Simply share the USB drive to the network.
The MBP can then access the USB drive, and it will be around twice the speed of networking to the same drive on the TC. TM on the iMac can then also backup the USB drive to the TC as part of the normal TM backups.
The only thing is the iMac needs to be turned on to allow MBP access.

I lost my connection with my AirPort Base Station when I upgraded to the OS Maverick. I can still see the Internet, but the Time Machine cannot backup now because it cannot locate the AirPort base station. How can I resolve this issue?
Steps already taken with zero success:
1. Restarted the AirPort Base Station multiple times.
2. Restarted the Mac Pro multiple times.
3. Looked online for AirPort update for 6.3.2 version.
Other Apple products in my house can still see the AirPort Base Station, however my Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro cannot.

That information helps. If you want to use one of the SmartStor's disks as a repository for sharing your iTunes Library, then do not configure that disk as a RAID. Format it with Disk Utility using the Erase tab. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the correct choice.
Connect it to your Time Capsule, then use AirPort Utility to configure access requirements for sharing it on your network. It should appear as a shared volume in the Finder, available to all your Macs as you thought it should.
I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk. It isn't.
Correct. There is no way to do that. The only way to increase the capacity of a Time Capsule's hard disk is to replace the Time Capsule (or its disk, if you are amenable to disassembling it) with a larger capacity model.
If you also want to use the SmartStor as a RAID, that is another story, and you should probably attack that problem separately.

How can I get my Albums back at the top of the Library Panel?

I recently upgraded to 3.3.2 and among the many new and sublty annoying features, all the smart albums which I created and which used to be at the top of the Library panel now appear at the bottom below the Projects.
Why someone thought this should be moved is beyond me... and I am hoping there is a way for me to bring it back to the top.
In some of my Aperture libraries I have literally hundreds of projects and rely on smart albums to quickly organize photos across them. Having to scroll to the bottom of the pane is a pain!
Does anyone know how I can bring the ALBUMS back to the top of the Library pane?

Create a folder (new Folder), call it "My albums" or similar, and drag it to the top of your projects section in the Library Inspector panel.
Then drag all your albums there.
You will have to set the projects to be arranged manually, or let the name of this folder start with a character that bring it to the top, if you want to sort by name.

HT1414 How can I get my IPad back to the way it was before I updated it? I hate the way it is now!

I recently upgraded my IPad because I thought it was a necessary security upgrade since Apple's security was recently compromised. I did not know it was going to reconfigure my settings. I hate it the way it is now and don't know how to get it back to the way it was. Is there anyway to reverse the upgrade without losing my pictures and other data? I also lost some expensive courses I had purchased. They are no longer there when I open the app. I hate the way it organized my pictures too. I have no control over this, and it makes me very unhappy. Is there a way to fix it?

How can I get New Window back to the top as first choice? v4.0 has swapped it with New Tab.I'm using v4.0 on a Mac.

I'm used to clicking on File and having New Window as my first choice. New Tab is now at the top of the list. My brain is slow to make the transition to the new format and I keep choosing New Tab in error. Can I swap them?

As someone who uses predictive typing constantly when I use my iPhone I can understand not having it available would be upsetting. Let's see if we can get you back up and running.
You can activate predictive typing by going to Settings > Keyboard > Predictive and turn it on. See this help article for reference -

If you have just hidden the predictive text suggestions by moving the suggestions bar down you will see just the gray top of that bar. You can drag it up again to regain the view.

I backed up my iPhoto library to my EHD then deleted some photo in iPhoto on my iMac to make more HD space. I want to back up iPhoto again to my EHD again but do not want it to overwrite the whole library. How can I make sure it backs up the new photos

Ok so how can i just back up the newer photos to my iPhoto library on my EHD? If it overwrites the backed up library it will delete the older photos that I backed up and then deleted from my iMac HD.

Do you want to back up only your photos and not your current library? Then you will not get a backup of your albums, books, calendars, ..
A lot ofyour organizational work will not be backed up, if you only save the newer photos.
To find the new photos create a smart album:
From Photo's main menu bar: File > New > Smart album
and add a rule: Date is after .... ; enter the date of your last backup.
Then export the photos from this album to a folder on your backup drive.
File > Export > Original
But it would be much better simply to copy the iPhoto library to the external drive, after renaming the older library, so that it will not be overwritten.

You might consider to let TimeMachine do the work and keep track of changed versions.
Use Time Machine to backup the library regularly, so you always can restore a current version aand can find older photos that have been deleted, and make occisiona snapshots of the whole library on a second backup drive.

No Wireless device when maverick install failed. how can I get my wireless back?

I walked away as Maverick download started. When I returned, it was at the login screen.
After logging in, I was still at 10.8.5 and the wireless device was gone.
How should I proceed. I have wired access still.

Thanks for your time.
Later on the 27th, I connected the MacBook to a wired Internet line and finished the Maverick installation. The wireless was still listed as "no device found". I tried holding down the D key on cold boot, to get hardware diagnostics, but I never saw a message saying where the results were stored.
Tonight, when I got home, I turned on the MacBook and my wireless device has awaken from its two day slumber and it is working again. I will try to get some info from the system logs, but right now, the revival has no explanation.

Try downloading the current version of the iBooks app on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your account's purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and you should be able to download an older compatible version of the app.

How can I get my library back if the Originals folder is missing/deleted?

I updated from Leopard to Lion and so everything was deleted. Well I thought I backed everything up as I was supposed to, but apparently not. I copied the iPhoto library file to an external harddrive and some of the files from that library didn't/wouldn't go over. The computer gave me a message but I don't remember the specific words. So I did the Show Package Contents of each file, the original library and the one in my external harddrive, and selected all and moved everything to the library on the external harddrive. I didn't even think to specifically carry the Originals folder from the old library to the new one and I noticed yesterday after some issues with iPhoto telling me it needs to be upgraded but then crashes when I press update. Is there a way to restore the library, well at least the original file sizes of the pictures using the thumbnails or anything else from the library?

If you don't have the original files then I'm afriad you don't have anything to work with.
