I inadvertently deleted system files and my computer won't start up

I was cleaning up the hard disk and deleted what I thought were some redundant systems/library files.  After restarting the computer, I realized I must have deleted required files because the computer will not restart.  The disc is full and these files are sitting in the trash bin.  When trying to use the Leopard install disk to reinstall/recover, the macbook doesn't have enough disk.
Not sure what to do now.  Any suggestions?

My Mac has got 2 System Folders on it
That's impossible.  Two folders cannot have the same name.  Hence, you do not have 2 System Folders. You may have a folder with a different name but similar, but computers will not be confused.
Anyway, this isn't the reason your computer will not boot.
Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.  See if you can get this to work.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
is being checked.

  • Mountain Lion update, and now computer won't start up?

Writing this for a friend, as his computer is inop at the moment.  Hence this message.
He has a new 27" iMac.  He upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, and then had intermittent problems with apps unexpectantly shutting down.
Now he did a ML update this morning, and his computer won't start up.  It gets to the point of the Apple logo coming up, a progress bar, and then the spinning wheel, but then shuts itself down right afterwards.
A safe boot yields the exact same result.
Any thoughts out there on what he could try to get it up and running again?
Thanks much for any and all help.

Thank you for the fast response.
He was able to get into Disk Utility with the Command and R keys, but when he tried verifying the disk, in red it said 'Invalid Node Structure, volume could not be verified completely'.
He went ahead and verified it anyway, then proceeded to repair it.  Howver, it stopped repairing, said it cannot repair, and that he should back up files and reformat the disk.
How can he back up his files?  He cannot see a way to do it.  Is there anything else he can do besides having to reformat the disk?
This is his first Mac (after much prompting from me to go Mac), and he's afraid he's now lost everything on there.

The power light continues to flash and I receive three beeps, then two beeps, then three again and the process just keeps repeating. If I hit the power button the computer shuts back off. What OS version are you on? You're not running iOS 6.1.2 on it.
If you're on 10.7 or 10.8, try the recovery option:

I do not recommend reformatting your harddrive and reloading your software.  This is a Windows thing. On an older mac it may be difficult to find all your software again.
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

  • ITunes deletes song files from my computer when I sync a device

When I sync a device in iTunes, it will sync fine and copy over all the files I need it to, but sometimes it will delete those files from my computer after it finishes copying them over. I'm not sure why this happens, I just know that I definitely have the songs on my machine before the sync, and afterwards, exclamation marks will begin appearing next to some of the items that were just synced over. It isn't a problem with the music files themselves, because it might only delete a few songs from an album that I imported all at the same time. It isn't just one device either, it's happened with all of my devices: an iPod Shuffle 2nd and 4th gen, Nano 5th and 6th gen, Classic, iTouch, and iPhone 3GS and 4GS. I've set iTunes to automatically copy music files into the iTunes media folder, and keep it organized, so I try navigating to the folder where the files would be, and the files are just not there anymore, or anywhere in the media folder; there's nothing in the reclycling bin either. The lower bit rate music file will be on the device still, but that's the only copy to be found anywhere. I have a fairly large iTunes library - about 90 GBs of music, and over 100 GBs of Movies and TV shows - but I'm not sure if that's part of the problem or not, though it does slow down iTunes a great deal when editing file info. I only know that it happens with music files, since I don't really sync over the other types of media as much. I believe that it might have something to do with the 'Convert higher bit-rate songs to ___ kbps' function, because it appears that only files that are higher bit rates than that setting will be deleted.
I've tried dealing with it for awhile, but it's getting to be a real pain to go find and re-import all of those CDs, so I'm hoping someone can help me with why it happens or at least a way to stop the deletions. Maybe someone else is having this same problem as well?

  • Computer won't start from hard drive or CD, and won't perform system recovery.

I have an HP Pavilion g7-1314nr. Yesterday it froze and I held down the power button to turn it off. After turning it back on, it started a disk check. I turned it off during the disk check, and upon trying to boot it back up, it told me booting failed and to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to try again. After multiple attempts, it stopped displaying this message.  Under system diagnostics, I ran a boot test, and it failed. Attempting a system recovery brings up the start-up windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. This morning, I inserted a recovery disk and told it to boot from internal CD/DVD drive. Like system recovery, it brings the Windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. My computer is incapable of booting from either the hard drive or a CD. What do I do?

    Hi @TeridaxXD001 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion g7-1314nr Notebook and issues with Windows 7 and starting up.  I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the fan issue.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. There is a section on getting past the HP Logo screen.
If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Need Help-SOA 11g File Adapter unable to delete input file and its crashing

    Hi All
    Please find the details below:
    1. We have created a simple SOA composite to Read file from an input directory, archive the file in an archive directory using Inbound File Adapter Read
and then use Outbound File Adapter Write to move the file to a output directory.
    2. File Adapter needs to delete the file after successful read/retrieval.
    3. We are using the "Use Trigger File" for invoking the file adapter. This is a new feature in SOA 11g
    4. Also we are using the option of reading the file as an attachment as we are not doing any transformation in the composite
    Issue Details_
    1. When the trigger file is put in the input directory for the first time, the File Adapter reads the file, archives it and moves it to the output directory
    2. However it does not delete the input file from the input directory and raises Fatal Exception mentioned below:

    Hi,
Using the file adapter, you can poll from multilple locations...
Keep the following property in your .jca file
    <property name="DirectorySeparator" value="," />
While giving the path in File Adapter configuration, keep comma and give the next location....then the file will be picked up from the locations you gave....
    Hope this helps...
    Thanks,

  • Can I delete all files and users (including admin account) without re-installing SL?

I have a 1st generation Macbook Air, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Just bought myself a new MBA, want to sell the old one (privately, not soliciting here).
The original install disks were Leopard.  I bought a family pack SL and upgraded the MBA at that point.  Earlier this year I sold my old Mac Mini (when I upgraded) and included the SL install disks with that sale (stupid of me).
Now I want to sell the old MBA.  Ideally, I'd have a clean install on SL on it, minus all previous files and accounts.  I've done that before when selling old computers, reformatted / erased the HD, then reinstalled the OS.  But I don't have the SL disk anymore, and I don't really want to pay for it just to prep this notebook for sale.
    AFAICT, my options are:
wipe the HD and reinstall Leopard (the only OSX disks I have).  Whoever buys it from me would need to upgrade to SL themselves, and from there to Lion if they want.
somehow try to delete all files and users without touching the current install of SL.  I'm not terribly worried about security of what little information is on the MBA (nothing important to me), so I don't mind trashing files and then emptying trash instead of wiping the HD block by block.
Any ideas for how to do #2?  I can trash all files/folders under /user, uninstall all applications and delete their folders from Library, uninstall all browsers except Safari and wipe the history from that...
Is there other stuff I should be deleting?  plist files, maybe?  I'm leery of messing around too much and disrupting the install of the underlying OS.
Can I also delete the admin account (or rename it "admin" with a generic default password?)?
    Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

Trashing files you have created is relatively easy. Getting rid of an account is a bit harder. Trashing the .plist files, etc., that may contain personal info is a lot harder, and there is always the risk that you will miss something.
Best, and easiest, and customary, is to do option #1 - wipe the drive and re-install the original OS from the original disk set. The receiver of the machine can then decide which OS they want to upgrade it to, and purchse accordingly.
The original disk set for that machine should be included with it when it is sold.

Have you confirmed that you successfull purged iTunes Match by also looking on an iOS device?  If so, keep in mind that Apple's servers may be experiencing a heavy load right now.  They just added about 19 countries to the service and I've read a few accounts this morning that suggests all's not running perfectly right now.
