I inserted library items then stuff dissapeared

Hi
...sorry folks Im a newbie,
I use mx2004 I am helping a charity re-do their website and keep the current one up to date.
I started to insert library items into the existing site pages ( which are all table based ) some of the pages seem to be fine
but other ones are showing a blank page when i preview them .
Firefox is the only browser that it seems to be ok in, IE Opera Safari and chrome are showing nothing
except IE which shows thr background colour
Ive got a gut feeling Ive inserted the LBI in the wrong place or something

thank you

thanks very much ive spent ages trying to sort that

  • Inserting library item modifies code

    Hello,
    I have some library items that are table rows. When I insert
    the library item into my page, it actually rearranges the code on
    the page for that table. Any way to have DW stop doing this?

    can't make just a row a Library item- it has to have
    <table> and </table>
    rethink this, or go with SSI or something?

  • Can't update library item in object library

    I used to be able to update library items, and did so often. Now the "Update library item" option is not just grayed out-- it's gone from the panel menu.
    In order to update an item, I have to drag it to the page, update, then delete the corresponding library item, then drag the updated item back from the page into the library (and name it again). Do-able, but a lot more time consuming.
    I have checked Edit > Menus, Context & Panel Menus and the Update Library Item feature visibility is on.
    Is there something I'm overlooking? Thanks for any help!

    Might be time to delete InDesigns prefs.
    To delete the preferences, hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Cmd just as you launch InDesign.
    Doing this will remove any workspaces you have set up along with Print/PDF Presets.
    Back these up first.

  • Page persistence indicator and Library item

    What is the best way to create page persistence indicators on
    a
    navigational array using div elements, in which the nav array
    is stored
    as a Library item and stretches across multiple Templates?
    I am trying to follow the instructions as in this article:
    http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=F1394
    However, this method uses template parameters wherein the
    navigational
    array is stored in the .DWT template file, and not in a
    Library item
    which stretches across Templates as in my situation. I am
    looking for a
    solution which will allow the Library to dynamically create
    the
    persistence indicators.
    Oh, and also the nav array is made up of graphical elements
    (not
    text-based CSS) so the persistence needs to swap out
    individual
    graphical elements for each div.

    Yes, this is exactly what I'm trying to say.
    When I do a five page static site for a client who I know is
    probably
    going to make changes to universal elements once every year
    (if that) it
    really doesn't matter if I choose Library or SSI. Often I
    will choose
    Library items in this case, simply because they're easy to do
    and I'm
    used to doing things this way. And when I do have updates to
    make?
    Dreamweaver makes it a snap to update those Library items,
    then compare
    the changed files on the server. It can all be done in under
    a minute.
    SSI? Could have used that, too, but to preview the site I
    either have to
    set up a testing server environment or make the include live
    before
    showing the client. And I can't drag and drop the file from
    the desktop
    onto my browser, have to go through Dreamweaver. These may
    not seem like
    big deals (and may seem inefficient to some) but I manage
    between 15-20
    sites all through Dreamweaver, some requiring extensive
    updates, many
    requiring only a few tweaks quarterly, and I can tell you
    that on the
    sites I've built Libraries around, they take me maybe a few
    additional
    minutes longer to update than with the sites I've built with
    SSI. It's
    all about which sites make the most sense to build SSI or
    Libraries around.
    Of course the argument has been made: why not plan better in
    advance to
    use SSI in the first place when it may save you time in the
    future? Good
    point. However, again, the sites I choose to use Library
    items versus
    SSI were usually smaller sites, with no dynamic pages, etc.
    And for
    whatever reason I chose not to rename all my extensions to
    SHTML ...
    didn't want to jump through hoops setting up a testing server
    environment ... or upload everything to FTP everytime I
    changed the
    include file just to preview the one pixel move I made on a
    photo ...
    and the client may see the include file live on his server
    before I am
    ready to demo the whole site, which is on version 4 at this
    point ...
    and now I have to change the path of the include on the
    Template to a
    new one so he doesn't see parts of version 3 ... and I don't
    want to go
    back to my client and ask for additional hours to call the
    client's
    dumb-*** hosting company to set up SSI that should already be
    setup ...
    don't have time to wait three hours for the webhosting
    company to get
    back to me with a "we're working on it" response ... and
    we're already
    overbudget due to that fancy CSS menu I already spent way too
    much time
    on and isn't looking quite right in IE6 still ... and I've
    got to get
    going on four other website updates before 6 PM ... it's now
    5 PM ...
    and I'm probably going to be up all night again.
    Given all of that, I can't see why there appear to be so many
    Library
    hating comments on this thread. Reading through, it would
    appear that
    Library items are utterly useless -- which is just not the
    case. I'm
    surprised at the comments, actually, because the power in
    Dreamweaver
    lies in its ability to make the business of building websites
    easier for
    users with a wide range of skill levels, for almost any kind
    of job.
    Some of its tools (like Libraries) have overlap with SSI
    perhaps to give
    the user as many options as possible depending on
    circumstance. Whether
    one chooses to use Library items or SSI, the results are
    often the same
    in my experience, and I feel Libraries have even saved me
    time in
    situations where includes were simply not the wisest choice.
    Who knows,
    maybe it's because I've grown so used to them over the years
    is why I
    defend them so. But any rate, Libraries at least serve some
    of us well.

  • Library item changed apperance.

    I committed my nav bar ul to a library item and now the appearance of my nav bar has an off white background and I cannot change it back.  Why did this happen?  Thank you.

    Possibly you inserted library item in the wrong division.  Would need to see your CSS & HTML code to give more meaningful answers.

  • Library Items - DW 7.0.1 Freezing

    When I access the Assets panel within DW, and click on the
    bottom icon (the open book - Library Items), DW freezes, and I have
    to close the program and open it again.
    Is there any way I can a) get this working, or b) insert
    library items to a document another way? If so, the library items I
    have seen have the <!-- #BeginLibraryItem --> contents of
    library item <!-- #EndLibraryItem -->. If I change that
    library item, will that change propagate to all documents
    containing that library item (being that the code for the library
    item is contained within the document itself).
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Does this happen on all sites with Library items?
    You can try this simple fix -
    Quit DW.
    Find this folder -
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
    Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver
    8\Configuration\WinFileCache-*.dat
    (these folders are normally hidden - you may have to use
    Explorer > Tools >
    Folder Options to unhide them)
    or on Mac -
    Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Dreamweaver
    8/Configuration/MacFileCache-*.dat
    and delete it.
    Restart DW. Works better?

    Yes you can drag and drop music to the iPiod if you select Manually Manage Music and Videos in  iTunes.

  • Shortcut for inserting a library item?

    Dear Dreamweaver people,
    i am busy inserting a library item (some html that creates a
    form) in about 400 pages. Automating this task is probably to
    complicated for me, but, hitting this insert button is tyresome as
    well. Is there any shortcut possible for this button? I cannot find

    I wouldn't recommend this. You would be MUCH better off using
    server-side
    includes instead of a Library item (I can't find a compelling
    reason to ever
    use Library items, honestly).

  • Library item inserts erroneous body tags?!

    When inserting a library item that contains xsl: tags, it
    adds body tags that aren't in the original library item.
    For instance, here's a sample of library item text that
    contains xsl: markup:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
    charset=utf-8">
    <xsl:if test="$language='en'">
    <xsl:text>    |    </xsl:text>

    <xsl:call-template name="getLocaleString">
    <xsl:with-param name="key" select="'key'"/>
    <xsl:with-param name="lang" select="$locale"/>
    </xsl:call-template>
    </xsl:element>
    </xsl:if>
    And here is the result of applying it to an html file:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
    Transitional//EN" "
    http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    <body>
    <!-- #BeginLibraryItem "/Library/test-xsl-li.lbi" -->
    <body ><body ><xsl:if
    test="$language='en'">
    <xsl:text>    |    </xsl:text>
    <xsl:element name="a">
    <xsl:attribute
    name="href">SomeFile.html</xsl:attribute>

    </xsl:call-template>
    </xsl:element>
    </xsl:if><!-- #EndLibraryItem -->

  • Library item inserting - messes up whitespace after update

    hey,
    i've got a site where i'm using a library item. it inserts
    okay, and updates okay on all the pages i've used it on so far.
    What's really annoying though is that it doesn't preserve any
    whitespace around the library item. So if I put a nice couple of
    newlines between the content prior (and after) the library item,
    it'll be stripped after each update. It's intensley irritating.
    Is there anyway to stop this ?

  • Inserting a library item on a page using Javascript

    Hello,
    I have a library with 6 different layouts in it.  I need to be able to place these on the page from an external program.  I have all my code in place to send commands to Indesign, but I'm not sure how to reference the Library items.  Can I reference them by name?  As well, I would like my external custom app to be able to list all the library items so that the user can select which one to insert.  I'm at a total loss as to how to do this.
    I need help with these two things:
    1) obtain an array or list of all the items in a particular Library, which is already open.
    2) Once I have the list of library items I need to be able to place one or multiple on the page keeping track them so I can place images and text in the appropriate boxes.
    Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using Indesign CS3 and my external app is coded in Objective-C on a Mac.  I prefer Javascript as I'm very familiar with it as opposed to Applescript.
    Thanks for any help provided.
    Dave Williams

    Assuming you have access to the equivalent of doScript, when that is used to run a JavaScript, the final value of the script is returned (coerced to a string? I'm not sure).
    Of course, you can always pass information from one place to another by using keyed labels. In my work (I spend most of my time writing scripts for Typefi Publish wherein the same script might get executed at the end of every page as the Typefi Engine composes the document), I often will add a keyed label to the document that passes information from one run of the script to the next. Here's an example (that includes reading the script itself to extract version information from the second line) -- while slightly inefficient, it has the benefit of putting the version info in a defined, easy to find place:
        function registerFirstCall(aDoc, interactive) {
            var scriptFile = getScriptPath();
            var scriptName = scriptFile.name;
            if (aDoc.extractLabel(scriptName) == "" || interactive) {
                scriptFile.open("r");
                var firstLine = scriptFile.readln();
                var secondLine = scriptFile.readln();
                scriptFile.close();
                if (secondLine.indexOf("//VERSION: ") == 0) {
                    var msg = secondLine.split("//VERSION: ")[1].split("\n")[0];
                } else {
                    var msg = "unknown";
                aDoc.insertLabel(scriptName, "Registered");
                TPSlog(scriptName + " version: " + msg, interactive);
        }// end registerFirstCall
    Ah, I see it uses the getScriptPath function, so for completeness, here it is:
        function getScriptPath() {
            // This function returns the path to the active script, even when running ESTK
            try {
                return app.activeScript;
            } catch(e) {
                return File(e.fileName);
            } // end try
        } // end getScriptPath
    The TPSlog function either pops up an alert (when working interactively -- usually means during debugging) or adds a log message for the session (that also is managed with a document keyed label). The keyed label in this case is performing the trivial task of recording that the script has previously been run against this document, in which case, it doesn't need to log a message identifying its version info.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using CSS instead of or with library item

    I built my site using Dreamweaver 8. I used the design view
    exclusively. I made a navigation bar as a library item. Utilizing
    rollovers, etc. Now I have learned I should build my site utilizing
    CSS and as was pointed out on this forum to me, to learn CSS and
    HTML.
    I am having a brain freeze. The logic escapes me as to how I
    would build a navigation bar and put it on each page as I did
    utilizing the library function before.
    I am sure for all you pro's this is a really dumb and obvious
    thing but I just don't seem to figure out the logic how to do it. I
    am not talking about the CSS for the behaviors such as hover,
    visited, active. This I know how to do. It is just the ability to
    have a properly designed navbar and be able to put it on every page
    I make.
    Murry "ACE" told me not to use AP and the dreaded mm_menus so
    I am trying to figure this out and build a better more code
    efficient site. Mine works but is quite trashy in the code.

    It can be a bit daunting.
    Try going through this tutorial completely. It's a bit out of
    date (using
    an older version of DW), and still covers the use of tables,
    but it's worth
    reinforcing your basic understandings -
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_website_pt1.html
    Then I would suggest you do this tutorial -
    Taking a Fireworks comp to a CSS-based layout in Dreamweaver
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/fireworks/articles/web_standards_layouts_pt1.html
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/fireworks/articles/web_standards_layouts_pt2.html
    Finally, to get a grip on how to manage menus across an
    entire site, use
    DW's F1 help about how to use Templates, and server-side
    includes.
    Templates do make your life much easier. I use the following
    scheme....
    First, I mentally separate the page layout into three
    sections:
    1. Stuff that will not change for the life of the site (i.e.,
    the basic
    structural elements)
    2. Stuff that *could* change from time to time (e.g.,
    navigation elements,
    burst advertisements, section-specific navigation, etc.)
    3. Stuff that *will* change from one page to the next
    Then I create a template containing all class1 elements. Next
    I create
    server-side include files containing all class 2 elements and
    place them on
    the template as needed. Note - some of the class 2 elements
    may be
    "section-specific elements", and their placement on the
    template will be
    subject to the next item. Finally, I insert editable regions
    to cover the
    class 3 items, INCLUDING the section-specific navigation.
    This allows me to just cookie-cut the rest of the site. I
    estimate that
    even for fairly large sites, about 80% of my work goes into
    planning and
    creating this template file.

  • Templates & Library items - best practice

    I've been having a bit of a heated discussion about how
    templates and library items should be used on medium to large
    websites.
    I'm of the opinion that you should have 1 template (or as few
    as possible) and any differences be managed with Library items.
    My colleague's argument is you should have a different
    template for each section, so for example 1 for the news, 1 for the
    features section (for magazine sites) so that if you have a banner
    section wide you change that template, as opposed to the way I'm
    used to which would be 1 template with multiple library items in
    the editable regions of the template, my reasoning for this is the
    large amount of html used for each template (like rollovers) can
    become inconsistent when there's more than one template. Like if
    you change something site wide you have to remember to change all
    of the templates, if you do this with a simple copy past DW can
    still make corrupt code if you use multiple templates.
    So basically I was wondering if there was a standard or best
    practice way of doing this.
    Thanks

    Your colleague is mistaken IN MY OPINION. I think you are on
    the right
    track *unless* your section pages are *SO* different in
    layout that you
    cannot conveniently include all of the
    alterations/permutations in a single
    template page. Further, my current workflow is to rely
    heavily on
    server-side includes within template pages, as described here

  • Behaviors doesn't seem to work properly in library items.

    I was trying add Open Browser window beahavior in a library item and it didn't work. I could set the event to "onClick" but the add behavior "+" was greyed out and I could not select anything because it would not open. Had to just go and copy and paste from another place and then change the urls. Even though the behavior now works when I click on the "gear" symbol to open the settings dialog box it wont open so I have to change it in  code view.
    How ever it works perfectly in HTML. Anyone else had this problem?
    Have not tried any other behaviors.

    I found this suggestion from Murry on a previous post to be a good rule of thumb:
    The strategy you should use for your includes is "What markup COULD change?"
    First, I mentally separate the page layout into three sections:
    1.  Stuff that will not change for the life of the site (i.e., the basic
    structural elements)
    2.  Stuff that *could* change from time to time (e.g., navigation elements,
    burst advertisements, section-specific navigation, etc.)
    3.  Stuff that *will* change from one page to the next
    Then I create a template containing all class1 elements.  Next I create
    server-side include files containing all class 2 elements and place them on
    the template as needed.  Note - some of the class 2 elements may be
    "section-specific elements", and their placement on the template will be
    subject to the next item.  Finally, I insert editable regions to cover the
    class 3 items, INCLUDING the section-specific navigation.

  • DW won't let me change a library item "change will be discarded"

    I built a site and I have library items for my logo and
    navigation and some thumbnails. I want to use a different file/lbi
    file for my header. When I delete the current library item and try
    to put a new one in, I get this message: "making this change would
    require changing code that is locked by a template or translator.
    The change will be discarded." I honestly don't know what to do; I
    really need to specify a different file for my header but it won't
    let me, and I have over 100 pages and I made all thumbnails,
    rollovers, and all links manually and the file that it's using
    isn't working right. I just want to put the correct one in there; I
    don't know how I can possibly build my site completely from scratch
    - what can I do?
    This is a related issue, but I'm not sure how: I have two
    library items named the same thing in two different folders; some
    files refer to one, some to the other, but I want them all to refer
    to the correct one; I can't make change since I get that error
    message. I'm confused about which file is which, I'd deleted one
    before, then restored it...thank you so much for any help. I'm
    trying to build my portfolio site for an art exhibition...

    Happily. One of the pages of the site I'm having problems
    with is
    http://www.hopeedwards.com/TEST_new_website/Hope_website/assorted_art.htm
    I also attached code for it. [note: the home/index page only
    works in Firefox but the other tabs work in IE and Safari. Also,
    everything is shoved down wrong in IE and it only looks right in
    Firefox] I am running Adobe CS3 on an Intel based Mac Pro with
    Tiger OSX 10.4. I'm having trouble with a couple library items. The
    very top library item is logo_and_navigation.lbi - all was okay
    with it except I somehow had a couple different copies of it in my
    Library folder, so I moved one of them to a folder within the site
    called "Trashes". Then I deleted that one because I didn't want two
    copies and the logo and nav disappeared on some pages that used
    that one. I reinstated it in the trashes folder. The pages that use
    that located in the Trashes folder are the index, Assorted Art, and
    Commercial Work. The ones that use the one in the Library folder
    are Clue Series and About & Contact.
    I would like them all to use just one file so I only have to
    edit one file if I make changes. I've tried several things: I've
    tried selecting and deleting the item in the documents and
    inserting the proper copy. It won't let me. I get the message
    "making this change would require changing code that is locked by a
    template or translator. The change will be discarded." I've tried
    doing a Find and Replace and replacing the word Trashes with
    Library to specify the correct folder info but that doesn't work,
    probably because it can't change code in the library item.
    I had a similar problem with the thumbnails library items
    when I tried to build my other pages doing a File Save As from the
    first one I built in Assorted Art. When I tried to create a
    Commercial Work page from it, I deleted the thumbnails library item
    because it was the Assorted Art thumbnails. When I tried to insert
    the Commercial Work thumbnails library item I got that error
    message. It was so frustrating; I had to go in and build the
    Commercial Work page from scratch. I had to do that with each
    different tab. It just doesn't seem right that you can't swap out
    library items.
    Anyway, I'd completely appreciate any help or feedback! I
    really would!
    Hope
