I just bought a Intenso hard drive and its asking me to erase it before using time machine. should i erase the disk?

Hi all.
I just bought a T1B Intenso Hard Drive.
Plugged into my MacBook Pro and TimeMachine instantly pops up asking me if i want to back up.
I do, so I accept and encrypt it.
However, a message appears and asks me if I want to erase the disk (nothing is on there) to be able to continue.
Should I erase the disk?
Will it corrupt the files saved on it?
Thanks all.

Have you already formatted the drive using Disk Utility? If you erase the drive then, yes, you will lose all data on the drive.
If you want to use the drive as a Time Machine volume, however, you MUST format the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" using Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder).
Good luck,

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • How do I make a hard drive "forget" that it was once a (no longer used) Time Machine drive?

I'm starting a new thread on this question in the hope that someone new will notice it.
I've started using a larger hard drive for my TM backups. I want to be able to use the previous drive for other things BUT I also want to keep the oldest TM backup, just in case. In order to do that I want to move all but one day's backup to the trash but of course get the "The operation can’t be completed because backup items can’t be modified." message. I also, of course, can't change the name of the backups.backupdb folder for the same reason. In older OSs it was possible to use a Terminal command to bypass all this but it would seem that it's no longer possible to do this in Mt. Lion.
Note that the old drive is NOT being used in Time Machine, so that's not the problem.
Does anyone know how to make Time Machine realize that the drive is now just a drive, not a Time Machine drive? Obviously I know I can just reformat it but then I'll lose ALL the files. I want to keep one day's worth, so reformatting is not the solution. I do know that I can copy everything over to another drive but I don't have another drive large enough to do that, so need to unflag the one set of files as TM backups and trash the others.
    Any help gratefully accepted.

I think I understand your question, but I'm puzzled at what you are trying to accomplish.
Let's say you've been using TM for a year, now you start a new backup set on a different device.
What you seem to want to do is delete all the backups in the old backup set on the old except for the very first backup - ie. the oldest.
That would mean that you would retain the oldest backup from 1 year ago, and all the new backups from the start of the new set forward. Deleting all the past year's backups except for the very first plus the new backups going forward on the new device. Is that what you want?
The only way I know of doing this would be to manually delete in TM all the undesired backups -slow and tedious for sure,
On the other hand, you want to keep the last backup of on the old device then....
Assuming that you started the new back up set shortly after the last backup on the old device, then the first backup on the new and the last on the old are almost identical for all practical purposes.
If that's what you want I'm not sure it accomplishes anything useful.
Can you clarify what you want to achieve/do, so we can help you better.

  • My Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and have just listened to a youtube tutorial on how to move iTunes library to the external hard drive. If I do this can I still load new media on my Mac without the external?

my Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and watched a youtube tutorial on moving iTunes library to external hard drive. Will I still be able to use iTunes on my Mac for new media or will this now only work through my external hard drive?

To do this you need to learn the details of how iTunes works.  For example, you just said, "leave my iTunes on my computer".  iTunes is the application itself so of course it has to be on your computer.  That said, I therefore don't know what you mean when you say leave iTunes on your computer.  The phrasing of your question suggests to me, if I may be frank, you don't understand how iTunes works fully and we can't just give you a "do this" answer and have it work out.  It would be too easy to make a mess of things.

Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Yes, you can download media and delete it again (but if it is from the iTunes Store there is the possibility you can't always download it again).  Of course if you want to keep a copy you can archive it.  I have done that with some files for which I have no room on my computer.  I transfer them to an external hard drive and delete the reference to the file (but not the file itself) from my library.  If I want a quick listen I go to the file on the drive and use Quicktime player or something else non-iTunes so I don't have to have it added to iTunes and delete again.  I don't know if that is the solution you are looking for.  I could leave the reference in iTunes but if the file can't be located by iTunes it will tell me there is a broken link = !  I guess I could live with that except I periodically scan my library for broken links and don't want it getting confused with ones I have done deliberately and ones suggesting I am really missing a file somewhere.
Another possibility is to make a second iTunes library for material you are archiving and only use that library when the computer is using the external drive.  There are tricky aspects to dong that but it is a possibility too.
The simple solution for most people with computers with tiny drives (as most seem to be these days) is to put their whole iTunes library on an external drive and use it from there.

  • I bought an external hard drive and now use it as time machine. I copied my photos to it. Can I now delete my iphotos?

My photo library is full. I bought an external hard drive and am using it as time machine. I copied my photo library to the external hard drive and burned all of my pictures onto DVD's. If I delete my photos from my computer, will the photos still be on the external hard drive and saved in time machine? I am parinoid about losing my photos (memories).

I think you mean Your Hard Disc is Full as opposed to iPhoto.

With regard to your iPhoto Library... you can Move it to another External Drive and use it from there and then you can use TM to Backup that Drive as well as as your Mac.
    1)  Move iPhoto Library to External Drive
See  >  iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
First... Make sure the EHD is Formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)...
Format, Erase, or Reformat a drive
    Quit iPhoto if open.
Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
Drag the iPhoto Library to the External Hard Drive.
To Use iPhoto on an External Drive...
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything.

Use the Firewire cable and t boot the old Mac's hard drive to the new Mac's desktop and transfer your entire iPhoto folder.
Use Disk Utiliy to erase'format HFS+ Journaled your TimeMachine drive and use the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your new boot drive to the external, it's hold option bootable.

Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • I just got a new hard drive and would like to find my "favorites" from a previous Firefox.

I just got a new hard drive and had to re start Firefox but cannot find my Favorites. Are they stored somewhere that I can locate them?

First, let's call them Bookmarks. :-)
Do you have your old hard drive connected, or a backup of it? Your Firefox bookmarks are stored in a personal settings folder known as your Firefox profile folder. The location varies depending on whether you had Windows XP or Windows Vista/7 on the old hard drive.
    XP - C:\Documents and Settings\''username''\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    Vista/7 - C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Your first profile folder names contain random letter/numbers then -default, but you might find multiple profile folders. In that case, the most recently updated probably is the one you want. Look inside for a folder named bookmarkbackups.
Let's assume you got that far and you have a number of dated files with a .json extension. You can restore those backups to your new Firefox. This article describes how (you will use the Choose File... option to get at that old file): [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
    Any luck?

    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Why did you mark your post as solved?
You will be better off posting in either the Lion or the iPhoto forum areas as this area is for Macbook Pro issues.  You are having software issues.

  • Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?

  • I just bought an external hard drive. What files should I back up?

I just bought a 60gig external hard drive and I wanted to know what files should I back up?

The easiest is to drag /Users/<yourhomefoldername> to the backup drive.
Only the files you've created can't be replaced. The rest is on CDs, DVDs, or can be purchased again if need be.
I don't bother with clones because there's always the possibility of trouble down the line if you have to restore from one. (Something could be wrong with the clone, or it could be altered if you have to boot from it.) Why take the chance, when the OS and apps are expendable? And, if you don't test that the clone is good (by restoring to a blank drive), you're just fooling yourself as to its viability.
If the internal drive dies, you take the time to install a new one, load up OS and applications, then copy your home folder back. So your computer will be unusable for a half-day---big deal. This doesn't happen every day.
The main thing is that you've backed up your home folder.
