The serial number is not on the box.

Serial numbers are never on the box; They are normally inside the box for security reasons and they should be on the CD sleeve as shown in this picture:
Some big stores in the States normally insert a leaflet inside the box with a Redemption Code on it as shown in this picture:

Launch iTunes on your computer.
Hold down your Control key, then on the menu bar in iTunes click iTunes>About iTunes (Mac) or Help>About iTunes (PC).
Any previously synced devices will scroll in a pop-up window; press the space bar to stop scrolling so you can write down the serial number.

Ok, so I just bought Adobe Photoshop elements 12 from Best Buy a month ago, and I want to download it onto my computer now. So I inserted the CD and everything, and through the process, the box popped up telling me to insert my serial number. After looking up what that was- and being told it was on the sticker on the back on the CD box- I entered it, and it keeps telling me it's invalid. It's a 8 number, so is it a redemtion code? If so, where do I redeem it?

The serial number should 24 numbers divided into sets of 4 (I think). It should be located on the CD cover. I don't think a redemption code is involved if you buy the CD, but just in case here's some links to cover either case...

Is there any place to find the original serial number other than "the sheet in the box". My original is v 1.1 (now running 2.x) & I'm double stuck - trying to migrate to a new PowerBook and upgrade to 3.0 - both tasks needing the original serial number. The box is long gone (first installed aperture at least 3 years ago) and serial recorded in my personal log has transposed or dropped digits - i.e. corrupted. The option to get a replacement serial from Apple is a long shot as well - only "proof" of purchase is that I have the original disk and the original user manual. Can't remember which store I bought it at nor would they have records that old. There has got to be some way to decrypt it from the various system files (preferences and application support)- any suggestions?

Just user to user....based on past and current history, Adobe Tech Support is not going to help you with a technical issue which is preventing you from using your purchased serial number for Photoshop Elements. Version 12 is not the current version. And, the Adobe Tech Support is limited even for the current version which is 13. If this matter involves a purchased activated serial number trapped on a crashed computer while you are trying to install on a 3rd computer, then probably Adobe Chat Activation can be of assistance. This order no is for subscription of Adobe Captivate 8. In order to install subscription you need not to enter any serial key .During the installation it will prompt you to enter your Adobe Id and it will validate your subscription after validating your Adobe Id from the server. I mean you have to sign in with your Adobe Id during the installation which you have used at the time of purchasing the subscription.
So for installation and activation you dont need any serial key . Just sign in and it will automatically activate your subscription .

I just bought and downloaded Elements 12 but can't launch the program. Every time I try to sign in to my Adobe account to get started it shuts the whole program down everytime I click sign in. Very frustrated!! I had been using the trial version and loved it and want to work with the full version now!!!

If the trial version was still on the machine then you didn't need to install another program because Trial version can be activated by inserting your serial number and activated in the normal way.
I suggest try going to Help >> Activate
and see if you can activate it otherwise, if you can't launch the program then you need to uninstall the PSE completely from the Windows Control Panel and then restart the machine to make sure there isn't anything in the computer's memory.
Now restart the machine and install your program but this time making sure you also insert the serial number and your AdobeID so that you can register and activate the program automatically.
