Buyers who purchased a new or Apple-refurbished Mac between June 8 and July 20 must complete and submit an online form no later than Aug. 19 to receive a redemption code that, when entered in the Mac App Store, lets them download a free copy of Mac OS X 10.7, aka Lion.
People who buy a Mac after June 20, however, are also eligible for a free upgrade if the machine does not include Lion. In other words, Snow Leopard-powered Macs already in the sales channel -- on a store shelf, say, or in a warehouse -- also qualify for the program.
Those users must submit their online request for Lion within 30 days of the purchase date, Apple said.
Only Macs purchased through Apple's online store, at Apple's brick-and-mortar stores and at authorized Apple resellers are entitled to a free Lion upgrade.

  • Just Bought Imac And Would Like To Restore To New

I just purchased a used imac g5 and it is very slow becuase it is loaded up with crap so i was wondering what would be the easiest way to restore the mac back to factory like the day it was bought i am a mac newbie this is my first one so any help would be greatly appreciated

Well, unfortunately you got the Mac cheaply but the system discs are going to set you back a bundle. BDaqua indicates suitable versions, either set of which will likely cost you over $100 and may be difficult to find. Personally I'd go with Leopard unless you have need for Classic. It will probably cost about the same, be slightly easier to find, and you'll be running an OS that is only 1 generation old so it is still (for a while) being supported by Apple. You could also run Leopard on an Intel Mac should that be your next upgrade (unless it is a newer model).
You can try to continue to run your Tiger G5 as it is, but you won't be able to restore it "like new". You can certainly delete former user accounts, and trash the archived contents. You'll be at a big disadvantage though without a source of fresh OS files, and a way to re-install the system should your drive have problems. If you go this route I strongly recommend buying a bootable backup drive (Firewire) so you will at least have a backup of all your files and an alternative means of booting. (By the way, strictly speaking you are running unlicensed software if you don't have the Tiger discs).
You can also call Apple Customer Service and see if they can provide you with a replacement set of the original discs that came with the computer. This will be for the original OS that came with the computer and may not be Tiger but Panther.

  • Internet on just bought imac dreadfully slow

    Dear All!
Today I bought an imac - not the very latest version that has just been released, but the one before that:
    Imac / 24inch / 2,4 cpu / 320 GB harddrive / OS 10.5.2 (9C3033).
I used a G4 Powerbook before, from which I am also posting this just now via the same connection that does not really work on the imac.
the imac works great, everything is quicker. The machine is not slow at all.
    But the internet is!!!
It is as slow as connection maybe 10 years ago - I mean as slow as analog.
However, I have a high speed connection that works totally fine - I am using it just now from my Powerbook.
The router is connected via network cable (Ethernet) - this applies to both the imac and the powerbook. I prefer that to airport / wireless.
All the data (Programms, passwords, Files&Folders) was transfered from the old Powerbook directly onto new the imac - that all worked fine. As I said, the connection happens, but it is just sooooo slow.
I read the threads posted here before, but I did not really understand everything - sorry, not a native speaker.
Tomorrow is a bank holiday here in Germany, and you know what it is like: You bought something, and you REALLY want to use it...
If there is anybody with an idea, please(!!) help.
    Thanks a lot!
    Thomas

    Dear George an Eustace!
    Thanks for your posts, really!
I have called Apple directly yesterday, and the first guy I spoke to was of great help. He made me do he following:
Disconnect all cables from the Mac. Hold the On/Off Switch for 15 seconds. Connect again. Turn the computer on, but immediately after the turn-on-sound appears, press "cmdalt+pr" until the turn-on-sound another two times. Then let the Mac boot up.
With the key combination, the RAM is apparently reset. And boy, was my mac turned on after this The internet worked like lightning.
However, I had to head of, thus turned the Mac off. When I came back home, turned Mac on, the internet was just as slow as it was before.
I called Apple again, but this time the guy was hopeless. No solution from there. Just now, it is working fine again, and I suppose I will give it another two or three days to see what is happening. I am not so keen to go through the routine above every second day...
@ George: What exactely do you mean by:
" What I was doing though was shutting down my computer every night and the maintenance scripts were not running."
What are the maintenance scripts for and what happens if they are not running?
"As soon as I ran the cron scripts the internet went back to normal."
    What is "cron" (so sorry...!)
    Thanks a lot.
I shall keep posting any progress and revelations.
    Cheers,
    Thomas

  • Just bought imac5.1 and needing os. which is the best for this model? only 2gb of ram

Just bought imac 5.1 2gb ram need os which is the best to run?

Here are the specs for your machine:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
I'd suggest purchasing a retail Snow leopard disk at the Apple store; it is a very stable system and will run well on 2 GB RAM.

I just bought a new iMac and now I amtrying to use it as a screen for my Macbook pro, but it don’t have a MiniDisplayPort the new model only have Thunderbolt which my Macbook don’t have. Isthere any way to connect this two mac’s anyway??

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • I've just bought a 2nd hand iMac running 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN up and running. The Applications Printers doesn't have an HP driver

I've just bought a reconditioned iMac running OSX 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN printer up and running. I used a Firewire cable to transfer all my stuff over to the iMac from a Power PC G5. However, the printer driver disappeared. The Print & Scan pane in System Preferences is now empty and when I press the + to add a printer the Add Printer pane has nothing in it either. Apple says os 10.7.5 already has printer software installled, but not on my iMac. It says in its list of compatible printers that it supports HP Laserjet 2200 (is absence of the 'DN' suffx siginifcant?) Apple also says to use Software Update to check if software is needed. Manual downloading from Apple, who say they've taken over from HP for this software doesnt' work either - I get a two-part download, one file is an unopenable '.dmg' document and the other is a '.dmg.part' document, similarly unopenable. I'm completely stumped. The HP Laserjet 2200DN is an excellent printer that serves all my needs but I'm beginning to think it may be too old for the iMac, but I sincerely hope not. Anybody out there with workable advice about how to solve this issue? I'd love to hear from you.
    Alex Carr

Firstly, in Safari you will find a button on the right side of the toolbar: note the downward pointing arrow. If you click on that you will get the download progress bar.
I don't know what may be the problem with getting the driver working. I suggest you open Print & Scan preferences. CTRL- or RIGHT-click anywhere in the blank Printers list and click on the "Reset printing system" item in the context menu.
Assuming you have installed the printer drivers you downloaded by running the installer that appears after you mount the .dmg file, click on the Add [+] button to Add a printer. A window should open with your printer listed, hopefully (the printer must be turned on and already connected to the computer. Do a direct connection while getting this configuration set up.) Select the printer. Now, if the driver model name does not appear in the "Use:" dropdown menu, you will need to look for it in the list of available drivers. Once found, select it, then click on the Add button.

  • HT2589 I just bought an Imac. I have an ipad2 and an iphone 4s. My wife has an iphone 4s. Both of us have different apple ids. Would you recommend a new one or use an existing id?  Why?

It is best to stop making all new apple IDs, as software is permanently tied to them, and you can't converge them. Make differnt ones if you plan to get divorced though....

  • Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each account/family member create their own imesssages, so that each family member can imessage privately?

Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each person use imessages privately when logged into their account?  instead of everyone seeing everyones imessages?  is there a way to do this?

I believe the short answer tot that is "yes" however I recommend you contact AppleCare to find out You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support when you buy any new Mac. This is the ideal time to begin using it. I'd also recommend that you purchase AppleCare, it will extend your 1 year warranty to 3 years and offer you 3 years of telephone support in addition to other services. You can locate the correct phone number in your part of the planet (Calgary, Canada??) by clicking Contact Apple for support and service

  • I just bought an iMac yesterday. I'm trying to transfer my iTunes purchases

I haven't had a Mac since I was about 6 years old. I just bought a Mac yesterday because our PC bit the dust and I needed something quickly for an art project that is due next week. I want to upload my music to the computer, and I'm having a problem.
I deauthorized all 5 of the other computers that my iTunes account was set up on, and most of my iTunes purchases were transferred. However, all of my most recent purchases begin to upload, but then this box pops that says: "Attempting to copy to the disk 'Macintosh HD' failed. An unknown error occurred (-39)."
Like I said, I'm still not entirely comfortable with my new Mac, it was just out of the box yesterday and I don't understand how everything work with it. So what exactly does this message mean, and how can I get my music on the iMac computer?

unfortunately from the UK you can not call Apple support
Last time I was there, UK still had telephones. Has there been been some sort of event that has rendered telephones obsolete?

I just bought a new IMac. I have photoshop elements installed on my old IMac and would like to move it to the new one. How can i do this?

Unfortunately, adobe doesn't have photoshop elements 6 available for download, as far as i know, so your best bet is to either get an usb dvd drive or use an computer with a dvd drive and copy the contents of the pse 6 dvd to somethiing like
a flash drive and then copy the contents from that drive to your new computer.
Do you still have your older mac and it has a dvd drive?
You can share files between the two using airdrop or an ethernet cable.

Just bought brand new new iMac. When browsing in Safari, sometimes the text suddenly gets super large. I'm doing nothing except reading the screen, tho I usually have my hand resting lightly on the mouse. I can get back to normal size by clicking "actual size" in View. But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click.  Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.
