I bought a new Ipod (5th generation). I am trying to sync it to my itunes. I tunes does not recognize my new ipod. It is registered. I was only able to download purchases I made from my old ipod. Try using the manual method of syncing. You can only sync music and vides from other than your one syncing computer if you use the manual method. The manual method is included here:

Kubota dashboard 4 is a 3rd party software not related to Adobe.
If it tells you that you dont have administrative permissions, it means that your user account has insufficient permissions to make the required changes.

It sounds like yu either restored it from a backup of your son's iPod or you set it up via iTunes with iTunes signed into his account.
I would go to Settings>General>Reset>Ease all content and settings and then set it up with your account. If you do it via iTunes make sure that iTunes is signed into your account.

Installing iTunes does not cause content to magically appear on the computer.
Your media is only where you put it.
iOS devices are not backup devices.
Copy the media from the old computer to the new computer.

The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?
