If you read the applicable paragraphs of the licensing agreement, it is not at all a grey area - at least as far as the rules Apple has decided to set. It's just that most people don't read the licensing agreement.
And, to make things worse, there are two different sets of rules:
1. If you upgraded from another (earlier) OS, the Lion license is NOT transferable to the buyer of your Mac. Original OS to be re-installed and disks supplied to buyer - doesn't matter how you upgraded.
2. If you purchase a Mac with Lion preinstalled, you may make a onetime transfer of Lion to the buyer of the Mac if you sell it.
You can download the SLA here:
http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
Add: As for machines being for sale on ebay, etc: simply ask the seller if it came with Lion; if not, does he know that he has to supply the previous OS disks and wipe Lion. That would be what I'd do if I were to ever get a Mac on ebay (I know better than to trust buying one there).
I'm glad I only buy from the Apple Online Store! I think I'd go mad trying to figure out all the legalities! lol
Thanks for the info, though, I think a few people will be interested in how this works

Yes. You can install v12 on as many machines as you like, but only two can be activated at any one time. You should not be using them concurrently.

Look in the Dock or the Applications folder for an installer for Lion.  Then run it.

how many licenses do i get with the purchase of lion? i have an imac and mac book.

Log in to the mac app store on your other machine and it should be under the purchase history.
If you haven't installed Lion yet you can extract the installer and then just use that without a need for downloading again

i have one apple id, but the family all have ipods, imac and mac book connected to  this account. how do i face time from one device to another?

    Hello chlanli
You would need to use one Apple ID for purchases in order to get them across all of your devices and computer. If you want you can use one Apple ID for purchases and the other one to sync personal data. The article below will explain further.

Snow Leopard breaks quite a few drivers - my Canon exhibited the same problem.
I eventually found updated drivers on the Canon website. You can try that with the HP, but if the all-in-one is more than a year or so old, don't hold your breath.
You can also try Software Update to see if it will offer new drivers, or failing that go to the Support Downloads site and search for HP updates.
In fact there's a new one for HP at the top of the list just now.
You may not necessarily want the latest one, though - check the specs to see if your model is covered; if not, search for the previous update etc.

  • How do i avoid duplicate data when synching iphone and mac book to the cloud?

When I left my job for the last time I uploaded my Microsoft Outlook Contacts to the Cloud so that I could synch it with my Iphone (which I did).  Now I would like to also synch the Address Book on my Macbook  with the Cloud and my Iphone so I can integrated all of these contacts.  First I do not know if I can do this since my MACbook is a few years old aand I do not see the Cloud Icon anywhere on it.   Second of all I am not sure which area (Cloud, Iphone, or Macbook) take precedence when synching.   Can I lose data?  Does one systems dat over ride the other?  How can I avoid duplicate data?    I am a fairly new Mac user and  love the way things are integrated so I think I should not worry but I need help.  thanks, tdag55

    Hi meadowD,
If you are looking to remove duplicate files from iTunes, you may find the following article useful (in the most recent versions of iTunes 11, the Display/Show Duplicate Items option has been moved to the View menu):

I just downloaded Lion.  Now when I open Safari, it automatically opens to the last page visited.  How do I reset it to open to a blank page as it did previously?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • I just downloaded Lion, why can't I open Word?

I just downloaded Lion, why can't I open Word?

If they are all PPC-only applications, then yes. CS2 is incompatible with Intel machines. Not knowing how old your iMovie version is, but if it goes back to the same time period then it won't work either until you upgrade all the old software to Intel or Universal binaries from the respective developers.
You can revert back as follows. Erase the drive and restore your Snow Leopard backup or:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Hi, I have just downloaded lion and my Photoshop CS is not supported.....why why why. This update will cost me $500 ! Totally useless update

I have just downloaded LION as an update and it is OK, not great but OK. However I am furious because it does not support Photoshop CS for Mac! Great so this update is now going to cost me 500 dollars for a new Photoshop. Well done Apple why is this not supported and why should I buy more software. THIS IS BAD BAD BAD!. Don't update to Lion until you check your other software will run! Does anyone know how to revert back to Snow Leopard or get your money back from Apple.

First off, learn how you must be prepared for Lion before installing:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
Next consider one of three courses:
    1. If most of your software is supported, and you don't presently have a backup of your older system, get an external hard drive larger than your current,
partition it for enough space for Snow Leopard and your present Lion installation on your hard drive allowing for at least 15% of each partition to have free space after cloning Lion and installing Snow Leopard and your Snow Leopard only compatible applications.
    2. If very little of your software is supported, and you don't presently have a backup, get an external hard drive, Install Snow Leoaprd on it, and recover your data on it after using the Migration Assistant to import the data from the Lion on the internal that is compatible with Snow Leopard, and the install applications from your CDs.    Once you have it working on your external hard drive, clone it back to your internal, and get a refund from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact.html?form=account
    3. If you have a backup from before installing Snow Leopard, just erase and install Snow Leopard, and contact the App Store support for a refund.
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact.html?form=account
    Good luck!

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • Decided to download "Lion" from work to install at home

Decided to download “Lion” from work to install at home. We have a much faster connection at work. Went thru the procedure of Registering and Paying and as soon as I hit the download button, it started to install. DO NOT want to install at work. Where is the physical file to download?
The install is on pause at the moment. How do I stop it completly.
Instead of calling it a download button, call it what it is, an intsall button. Call a spade a spade!

Well I gambled and downloaded their upgrade from work. From the things I had read It just seemed to me it had to work and it did. Besides it would have taken me 12 hours at home to download and I’ve thrown away more in Vegas.
When it finally finsihed and asked me to install I quit the installer. Burned the Installer app to a DVD and took it home. I copied the Installer .app to the Applications folder and launched it. It went thru a couple of things and then after about a minute it wanted to restart the iMac. I thought man that was fast or it didn’t work. What it was doing was restarting from the Installer app.  Took about 30 minutes to finish. Restarted and everything works fine.
I think the secret is coping it to the Applications folder and to launch/run it from there because I believe it’s last act is deleting the Installer app. (No installer app, No finish! - Just a guess) You always have a copy on the DVD.
