I just got a new laptop.  How do I install iTunes and set it up so that I can still store my 80 gigs of music on my external hard drive?

I would also like to set it up so that if I unplug my external hard drive and take my laptop somewhere else, I can still have access to iTunes on said laptop.  I realize that I wouldn't have access to the music that is on my external hd but I can still access the music that I have purchased from iTunes, right?

If your external drive has the right ports, you should be able to plug it up to your Mac and copy over your photos and wav files. You'll probably (I don't know this for sure as it's been a long, long time since I've dealt with wav files) need to convert the wav files to MP3 or some other format (but I would try opening them directly from iTunes, first - wait a second... yes, iTunes will open wav files).
There are only a fixed number of ways that Windows drive can be formatted and a Mac can read (though not necessarily write) them all. So you should have no trouble with that.
Good luck,

  • I just got a new computer. I have downloaded iTunes and authorized it. It shows my apps and music but says something about "downloading all". Do I have to download everything on to this new computer or is it already in there? I need to sync my iPad too.

I just got a new computer. I have downloaded ITunes and authorized it. It shows my apps and music, but says something about "downloading all". Do I have to download everythingon to this new computer or is it already in there? I also have an iPad that I need to sync. Is there anything special I need to do with the new computer before syncing the iPad?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Your past purchases are not on the computer.   By choosing download all, those purchases will download to the computer.
Once authorized to your iTunes account you can control the computer.
When syncing the iPad the first time you will get the warning " this iPad is synced with another computer, syncing will erase all contents and replace with the contents of this computer"
Say yes, this is what you wan to do.

  • New laptop, how do I transfer iTunes and library from other computer?

I still have the original disk to install iTunes, but it won't install properly. My biggest worry is that I'm going to have to re-download all of my songs once I get iTunes onto my new commputer. Can someone tell me how I can transfer everything over, or if it's even possible?

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
If you have an iPod it can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • I lost my macbook pro and i just got a new one. how can i retrieve the pictures taken with photo booth(old laptop) to my new laptop?

i lost my macbook pro and i just got a new one. how can i retrieve the pictures taken with photo booth(old laptop) to my new laptop?

Well if you don't have the laptop to get the storage drive out of it, and you don't have any previous backups how do you expect to get the photo's?
PhotoBooth is just a program, it stores the files on the computers storage drive, if the computer is lost so are your photo's.
There is nothing you can do to delete or retrieve them using your new computer unless you stored them online someplace.
DId you save them online? iDisk or something else?
I don't use such services because my data is mine and not theirs to snoop through, so if your looking for that sort of help I can't assist you any.

  • I just got a new laptop and i trided to transfer my music but it deleted it all. how do i get my music back

i just got a new laptop and i tried to transfer my music but it didnt work, it got erased form  my ipod touch and its not on my computer can i get it back

If, for some reason, you can't do it the way Templeton Peck describes, see:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • I just got a new laptop and I got rid of my old one and iTunes won't transfer my apps on my iPod 4g how i get my apps to show on my laptop?

I just got a new laptop and my new one says i cant have my ipod synced to another account and it wants to erase all my apps

That is right. An iDevice can only sync to one computer/iTunes library. If you still have the computer just cpy/export yur iTunes libray to a USB stick or similar and import it ito the new computer.  Also copy the iPod backup file to the new computer.  That file is locaed here:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Transfer iTunes purhases to the new computer by:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
Then let iTunes erase you iPod and restore the iPod from the backup and then sync.

  • I just got a new laptop, and when i went to go and buy something it asked me to verify my account because this was my first purchase on here. it asked me the security questions but i dont remember exactly what i put. Now my account is disabled. now what?

I just got a new laptop and when i went to go and buy something, it asked for some security question answers cause this was my first time buying on this computer. When i went to go type in the (so what I thought) correct answers, it said they were wrong. After numerous tries, it disabled my account. How do I get the answers sent to my email so i can start using my itunes again?

Go to item 12 in the AppleID FAQ for help with a disabled account.
You can also go to the AppleID support page and click manage your account for additional help.

  • I just got a new laptop, and just downloaded itunes.. can i plug my ipod into my new laptop without losing any of my songs?

I know this is probably a very common question, but I've heard too many different answers so I'd just like to make sure I know the correct one.
So I just got a new laptop yesterday because my other one fried.. I just downloaded itunes and was just about to plug in my ipod but then hesitated because I didn't know whether if I would lose all my songs or not. Will I lose my songs if I connect it to the new itunes? Thank You for your help!

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.

What do you mean "not working"?  That could mean multiple different things.
If help is desired, be as specific as possible.

for purchases from the iTunes store do this:
authorize iTunes on your new machine for your iTunes store account(s). connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

Email itunes support! Or you could just transfer your purchases. Either w/ external drive, or w/ you iphone/ipod/ipad!
