I just installed a new CD-R/DVD-ROM drive in my G4...won't recognize OS??

Hey guys!
A friend recently gave me his G4, but the CD/DVD drive wasn't working, so I went to Best Buy and bought a CDRW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive by "Dynex." I installed it and the tray pops out and it appears to be doing something when I put in the operating system DVD, but the screen blinks a file folder and a question mark.
There is no operating system currently installed.
Are only certain drives compatible with this computer, or is there something I should be doing upon start-up?

Dynex is likely a brand name for the seller, not the actual drive manufacturer.
if you check the drive unit itself, it may have some other markings on in that denote the actual mahufacturer.
While all drives should work for at least reading CDs/DVDs, not all will support booting.
Might want to check the drive compatibility database on xlr8yourmac.com

Very loud vibration from new Mac Mini DVD ROM drive

Good evening all.
I bought a new design Mac Mini 3 days ago. Today I decided to re-install the OS and found the following :-
1. The DVD drive makes a horrendous vibrating noise like an out of balance washing machine.
2. The usual method of booting from DVD ROM is to turn it on whilst holding the C key down. Mine just freezes to a white screen. This is reproducible every time. This boot method method has always worked for my iMac.
3. The alternate method of setting the boot disc in boot disc preferences to boot from DVD ROM worked on the second attempt. The first time it said Its own OS disc was an unformatted DVD ROM.
Anyone else with problems with VERY noisy DVD ROM and/or booting from its own DVD ROM ?

Yeah my new mini does the same thing. Funny thing is that it doesn't d it all the time. I know the other day, I burned a DVD with iDVD which took about 8 minutes. It was so loud That I didn't even thing the DVD would've burned correctly but it burned fine.
I installed Grand Theft Auto 4 when I booted into Windows XP Pro and the Super Drive Went To all sorts of Speeds, but Know Vibration. *It's a random thing, or maybe these superdrive are very sensitive to imperfectly made Discs.* *I have a Late 2006 iMac 17" which is very sensitive to an HP Printer Install disc which vibrated like crazy. But with ALMOST every other disc I throw at it, it burns and spins just fine and quietly.* _It's like putting Regular 87 Octane Fuel into a Lamborghini, it will run terribly unless you put the good stuff/ Higher octane fuel in it._
Luckily or me, *I have a MacBook Air SuperDrive. These Drives do work on all the new Minis*. SO because of that, I'm not going to rush out for a repair right now. Unless I know in advanced that I will be in the same area of the Apple Store ( 25 miles Away / 50 miles round trip) ).

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive. I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed. Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.
It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer. No good.

Thats correct. I can see it in the list however when I attempt to erase it or partition it it's like it's not being found or recognised and it throws up the input/output error message. I am pretty sure that the sensor it attached correctly and it is a SATA drive. I can see all the infor regarding the drive when disk utility is open and it all looks good but I cant access it or do anything with it. It's taunting me!
The install disk is in the drive and the install program runs right up to the point where you have to select the location for the install and there is just nothing in the box where you have to select the hard drive icon.
I have my suspiscions about the drive but any help would be appreciated.

Just installed a new Airport Exteme. Set up was no problem however we have 3 IPads and 1 Mac laptop and cannot get all devices to access Internet. Every reset of the airport gives a different combination of devices allowed access. Any ideas as to why?

Let me tell you coulpe of things I noticed:
- Are you using LEAP as the EAP method? some config examples illustrate configuriong using LEAP with WEP keys. Forget this and use WPA2-AES.

- in some AP configurations (AP1 for example) I can see that:
wlccp authentication-server client any method_Users
This means that the wlccp client authentication will use the method called method_Users. Let us see what is configured with this method:
aaa authentication login method_Users group Users
This shows us that the method method_Users uses the server group named Users.
let us see what is configured withe the group Users:
aaa group server radius Users
NOTHING!! it is empty!! so when a client tries to connect it will try to autheticate it against the radius server but the radius server group that it needs to check is empty.
so I think you need to either use the correct method under which the server is configured with the wlccp statement. OR you need to configure the method_Users with correct user group that contains a server.
Check and let me know if that works.

I think this new scrolling behaviour was introduced with Lion. You do get used to it pretty quickly (well I did). Are you sure that deselecting Natural Scrolling in Mouse Prefs doesn't re-instate the previous behaviour, it does here.

Firefox, Safari, and PhotoShop each handle embedded color profiles differently. For an add-on that makes it easier to experiment with Firefox's color management options, you might be interested in: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/color-management/ Color Management :: Add-ons for Firefox]. My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:

I installed the new version because itunes had not recognised my ipod nano 5G, and told me to reinstall. Itunes selected which version to install, so I don't understand what is going on. To add insult to injury it installed a pile of malware which I am still trying to get rid off.

I just installed a new WRT54G2 v1. It worked fine when I installed it two days ago. However now it seems to be searching for ip address, and in a loop. I can correct it by stopping and restarting DHCP services, then repairing the wireless wireless connection. However, this is a real pain since there are two desktops and one laptop using it. Does anyone have suggestions. I have the wireless adapters set to obtain IP address and DNS automatically. Is this the problem? Should I assign static addresses to each? Just searching for a solution so I don't have to go through the repair each time the pc's start up. Appreciate any help. Thanks

I found at least part of my problem. On one desktop I found TCPIP V6, which, from what I have researched, is not needed - in fact, it causes problems on some networks. I unstalled it and the pc booted back up with active wireless Internet connection. I don't know if that was the only problem, but it at least temporarily solved that one.

Just installed a new logicboard and OSX 10.4 Chokes on 10.4.10 update

Just installed a new logic board on a 15" aluminum Powerbook g4. Followed all the steps on ifixit.com on how to do it and it went without a snag. It booted up and hurray! at least i thought so. Updated from 10.3.9 to 10.4 and installed and when i ran updates, the first one was 10.4 to 10.4.10....it decides to crash with that tinted screen saying I need to restart in 4 different languages. Go to do that and all i get now is the apple logo and it hangs...is it the logic board?
Or, should i just reinstall? Bad HD?
