I just installed a second, larger hard drive. Can I copy all of the files?

I have a G5 Tower with an 80GB Seagate hard drive. I just installed a 160GB Seagate in the second bay. It seems to be connected. I partitioned it. Can I now simply copy everything that was on the old hard drive onto the new one? Do I then tell the computer to boot from the new larger hard drive, and it will boot and operate automatically from the new hard drive, as if I was still using the old hard drive? Will everything work simply by copying (dragging) all of the files from the old drive to the new one?

Hi James_ Nindel;
I answered your other post.
Double posting the same problem is a good way to confuse everyone.

  • Is the "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" on the new mac worth the extra cost?  I am comparing with a refurb with better specs (faster CPU, larger hard drive) and from what I undersand the PCIe flash storage is the big differentiator in cost.

hello - i am considering two macbook pros
    NEW - http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=ME294LL/A&step=config#
    REFURB - http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0ML1LL/A/refurbished-macbook-pro-27ghz-quad-c ore-intel-i7-with-retina-display
The refurb actually has a faster processor and a larger hard drive.  From what I understand, the big difference in cost is the new macbook pro contains "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" versus the refurb "768GB Flash Storage".
Is the PCIe flash storage really worth the extra cost (and smaller size)?
PS - Also I believe the brand new one has 2 GB graphics memory as opposed to 1 GB graphics memory.  I don't really care about that as much as I won't be doing a lot of video editing or gaming.

Some are some are not. Otherwise Apple has a ton of Mac's sitting around that have been returned by customers under their 14 day No Questions Asked return policy.
But they not just Returned and Resold. They go back to Apple, checked out (Tested) any parts that are not up to spec replaced and then repackaged in a plain white box to be sold as refurbs.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and want to install a 3TB internal hard drive. Is this compatible? The manual indicates 1 TB per bay, but I have already installed two 2 TB hard drives in two other bays, and have had no problems. Any suggestions?

    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Installing a second SATA hard drive - Problems booting

    Hi,
I currently have one Maxtor 160GB SATA hard drive in my system with my operating system installed. I have another identical hard drive that I'm attempting to install now, into the second of five available SATA ports on my MSI P965 Neo motherboard.
When I plug in the second hard drive, though, Windows will not boot. It gets to the Windows logo screen with the progress animation, but before even the animation can begin, it stops and the screen freezes. This does not fix itself with waiting.
My boot priorities are set to: DVD-ROM, CD-RW, hard risk. The hard disk priorities are also as they should be to my knowledge - although it can be tricky because when ordering, both disks have the same name. I have tried with either one on top of the list, and you cannot remove a drive from the list alltogether.
The SATA cable is in perfect condition. My BIOS is up-to-date.
When I plug the hard drive in when the system is already running, Windows will detect it and files can be written/read flawlessly. As soon as I restart, however, I run into the same issue.
The first HDD, with the OS on it, is in SATA 1, the second HDD is in SATA 4. Ports 3, 6, and 7 are unused.
I'm out of ideas at this point, I don't see any other options that need to be changed.
I'd appreciate any input you can offer - thanks in advance!

I would debug this drive you are talking about which clears off all data and partitions information. Take out the good drive and leave in the dodgy one. Boot to a floppy with this dell win95 boot disc.
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R19775&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=19601
When at the A: prompt: type debug and enter, you get a (-) prompt and then enter the following script exactly:
    F 200 L1000 0 (enter)
    A CS:100       (enter)
    xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301  (enter)
    xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200  (enter)
    xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1     (enter)
    xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80   (enter)
    xxx:010C INT 13    (enter)
    xxxx:010E INT 20   (enter)
    xxxx:0110             (enter)
    g                        (enter)
    q                         (enter)
    restart your system.
Now you can put back in your first drive as well, boot up into windows and use the disc manager to repartition and format.
Old school! If you are still having problems I would replace the drive.

  • How can I get Itunes to just create a route to an external hard drive instead of copying all my music onto my internal disc?

I have been trying to start using Itunes again, I have a large amount of music on external hard drives and not a large amount of disc space, on my windows version Itunes could use it's library in the hard drive so Itunes would use a directory path to the song file. When trying to import onto my Macbook Air it keeps trying to copy the song files, resulting in a message that says I haven't got enough disc space.
    Any Ideas?
    Kind Regards,
    MEJM1

    One approach:
Open the menu Edit > Preferences...
    Select the Advanced tab.
Uncheck Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
This will stop iTunes from wanting to copy everything onto the internal drive any time you add content. This is marginally easier than remembering to hold down the ALT key, however in this scheme iTunes Store purchases, podcasts etc. would still end up on the internal drive.
Alternatively you can store the entire library on the external drive. Close iTunes if it is open, then copy the existing iTunes folder from your profile to the root of the external drive. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key so that you get the following dialog box:
Click Choose Library... browse to /iTunes on the external drive and select the library file iTunes Library. Now that library is on the external you can move any new content you want to add to the library into the folder /iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically add to iTunes to have it added to the library and organized by it without creating duplicates, or filling up the internal drive.
Ideally you should get another drive so that you can make a backup copy of your library on a separate physical disk.

  • I seem to have deleted my iphoto while cleaning out my hard drive, can i recover it with the pictures it had on it?

while clearing out my hard drive on my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 i managed to delete my iphoto is it possible for me to relocate it? along with the photos it had on it?

If your Mac came with iPhoto preinstalled, before the AppStore was introduces, iPhoto should be on the system install DVDs that came with with your Mac. Look for the DVD with the bundled additional applications.
If you deleted your iPhoto library, restore it from your backup - you need to restore "iPhoto Library", which is located in your Pictures folder by default.
How long ago did this happen? If it was only recently, data recovery software could be used to restore jpeg images, but this kind of software is not available for free,

    <edited>
There's a vlc streamer app in the app store, but you would need to also install the streamer helper on the device where the movies reside. This works between my macbook and my ipad, but if you cannot access the external drive and install the helper file, then probably not

  • Can you download all of your iTunes match account onto your computer?  I screwed up my iPod that had the entire library on it and the computer that had the hard copies of the files on it blew a hard drive.  I need to get the files back from iTunes Match.

Can you recover/download all of your iTunes Match account onto your computer?  I synced the iPod that I had the entire library on to a new computer and lost almost all of my music.  The old computer that had the library on it blew a hard drive and I can't sync the iPod back to the old computer.  Everything is in iTunes Match, but can I load it onto my computer, so I can get it back on my classic iPod?

If you had iTunes Match before all this happened, yes. Just log in, activate iTM and download the music. If you did not have iTunes Match prior to these incidents, no, it can not help you.
You should also be doing regular backups of your personal data to an extnal HDD. If you had a backup hue could simply restore it.

  • Transferring Photos to an external hard drive. I Copied all the pictures from a folder in iPhoto and Pasted on the Hard Drive. However, only about 50% were Pasted. It will not let me Copy

I am trying to Transfer my Photos to an External Hard drive as a Back Up. Since I want to be able to Transfer them to a Windows based computer if necassary, I did not use the Automatic Mac Backup program.
To Transfer them. I Copy all the Pictures in a folder in IPhoto, then Paste them in a Folder of the same name, which I have created on the External Hard Drive. It will Paste about 50% of the Photos. Then, when I try to go back and Copy and Paste the rest, it acts like it has already done that. HELP!!!

By default, iPhoto keeps pictures in a special library which isn't user friendly - but is effective for the program. The best way to move pictures from iPhoto is to export them from the iPhoto program.
Start up iPhoto and select all the photos you want to move to your external drive. Go to the File Menu and select Export... For size choose original and then select the external drive as the destination. (It would be good to create a folder for the photos first.)
Since export doesn't create folders and you may want the photos organized, you can select one event or one album at a time and export each separately, putting them into separate folders on the external.

  • HT1751 when i have moved all of my data to an external hard drive should i delete all of the library files on my laptop/PC

i have moved all of my data to an external hard drive should i then delete the copies on my laptop

What are you actually trying to accomplish? Backing up the library, or moving it?
If backing up don't delete anything.
If moving did you move the library files as well? Ideally you would copy the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive then shift-start iTunes to connect to the relocated library. This method makes it easier to move the library to a new drive or computer later and keeps everything together for backing up. Rather than delete everything rename the iTunes or iTunes Media folder first (depending on which approach you took) and make sure the library still works before deleting.

  • What internal hard drive can i use to upgrade the one i have in my 13" MacBook Pro mid 2010 model?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010 model machine. Love it to bits but i want more applications, more documents, more music and more iPad apps backed up, problem is I am running out of space. I want to update the hard drive inside my computer, so is this possible and what hard drive is recommended? Any help is greatly appreciated

Any 2.5" HDD will do the trick. Your computer will run up to SATA II (3Gbps).
But I would suggest perhaps getting a Data Doubler + swapping your DVD Drive for another HDD, so you have 2 internal HDD's?

  • My ipod was stolen and my hard drive quit on me all at the same time.

so i got a new ipod and i backed up all my itunes on a cd but i still dont have any songs in my itunes, any help?

no its the same computer actually. is it as easy as just putting the disc in and itunes extracts it? or is it possible that i backed up my files wrong? and if so can itunes give me my music back?

  • I just bought the IPad 3. I have  the goodreader app on my iPhone. If I buy goodreader for my iPad can I copy all of the data from goodreader on my iPhone to goodreader on my iPad over iCloud? If not, can I copy it if I sync my iPad to my computer?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

First of all, you don't have to buy it again.  Once you own it, you own it and as long as you use the same Apple ID on your iPad as your iPhone (recommended), you can share the app on both.
Second, you can set up your new iPad with a backup from your iPhone, so the data you have in Goodreader on your iPhone would transfer to your iPad automatically if you restore your iPad from your iPhone backup.
