I just killed my powerbook with my iSight magnetic base mount!

While unpacking my iSight kit to set up a chat, the little magnetic base attachment slipped from my hand and landed on my open powerbook 12” just slightly to the left of the mouse pad. The magnet stuck firmly to the case and the most unbearable noise emeged. The computer then froze. I removed the magent, rebooted and discovered I lost the drive.
Although I was serious stuck as this was during a business trip, I took everything back to my base, where I could reboot with an external drive and ran some utilites.
Unfortunately the HD is gone.
It won’t appear, it won’t mount, and it looks like I’ve lost all my data.
Terrible, but fortunately I had a backup of all my documents that was only 6 days old. Unfortunately I’m still “on the road” (for another 8 weeks) and I’m limping along booting from a portable drive and using some basic software to continue my work.
So from my lesson- if you have a powerbook and an iSight camera, heave the magnet base out the window and hope it doesn’t land on anyone’s HD.

OUCH!
I have seen some reports that this can occur. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Hope it does not happen to anyone else!
Regards
Ian

  • I am informed by FF that there are updates. When I click on them the window just says it's trying to connect to the server and never does. I have a Mac Powerbook with 10.4.11 and FF 3.6.13

    # Question
I am informed by FF that there are updates. When I click on them the window just says it's trying to connect to the server and never does. I am never able to update and I believe FF is now up to 3.6.17.
I have a Mac Powerbook with 10.4.11 and FF 3.6.13.

That is because that Firefox 3.6.x version has been released later than the Firefox 4 version.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • No idea what to do with my iSight...

Alright, I'm a bit at my whits end with my iSight, and I would really love some help. One, seemingly random day, it just stopped working. The green light comes on, and when I look under utilities, its apparently connected. But when I enter photobooth, iChat and iMovie, nothing happens. It's a total black screen. If I take a picture with Photobooth, nothing shows up; it freezes, and then when I exit and reenter, it shows the camera symbol being crossed out. When I use iMovie, I go to film a video, and, again, nothing happens, and the video stops recording as soon as it stops. I reset the SMC, and other than that, I have no idea what to do. I really can't bring the Mac to Apple, I need it every day for classes, but its rather annoying that I can't get something to work. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Discussions, Catwalkk
For iSight trouble, use "How to Troubleshoot iSight" ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 )
If your iSight problem occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there usually restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
If your Mac is new and bought from a local retailer, your retailer can offer the best and fastest help.

  • Killing a bean with application scope?

Is there any way to kill a bean with application scope?
I am writing a web application, that most likely the browser window will never be closed. The problem is a user is authenticated onto our site but because the bean containing the users acct info is application scope, if another user logs in it still shows the old user as logged in. So on logout i would like to kill the application, the bean, servletContext...anything that will refresh the bean and the corresponding jsp. Any help is much appreciated.

There is an indirect way if you know servlets. The "application" implicit object that you use in your JSP is the javax.servlet.ServletContext object. Instead of declaring your bean using the jsp:useBean tag, directly put your objects into the ServletContext using ServletContext.putAttribute() method. Objects put in the ServletCOntext are available to all pages in the application. Just use the ServletContext.getAttribute() method to retrieve this bean in any other page.
To "kill the bean", just reset the value of this object to null by calling putAttribute(null).

  • 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram, Leopard?

Hi, should I update my 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram with leopard? will it run faster or slower than the current OS which is 10.4.10.
    Thanks

    Good Afternoon,
I'm afraid that is a question only you can answer based on your need for the new features in OS X 10.5 versus 10.4.10.
Statistically, yes, you can upgrade to Leopard however with that limited amount of memory you may experience a less than ideal user experience from Leopard. If you do consider upgrading to 10.5 you will want to also budget in a RAM upgrade to the maximum supported amount by your Powerbook.
Personally if I was going to spend that much money on an upgrade to 10.5, I'd consider saving my money a bit longer and just replace the equipment with something a bit newer such as one of the new Santa-Rosa MacBooks.
    Just my thoughts! 

  • Mac OS 9 needed on Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 only

I have just purchased a used (immaculate) 17 inch Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 installed. When installing Photoshop I have to put in 5.5 first then upgrade CD to install Photoshop 7.
Photoshop 5.5 apparently requires OS 9 to install. When I put the CD in a "Classic" symbol popped up in the dock but didn't start up because OS 9 was not available.
In order for me to install Photoshop 7 I need to start with 5.5 and then upgrade.
I have had many Macs since '89 and have upgraded etc.. I have an old OS install CD for a G4 However it won't start up without alraedy having OS 9 in the machine.
How do I install even a new CD of OS 9 if I can't get it to start up in Classic?

  • Confusion about using non-Apple prod. on my powerbook with AE base station

I have a G5 and an base station. Always worked fine.
Then I wanted to add a USB wireless "card" to my powerbook 12 inch G4. The salesman said they are not well supported by Apple. So i found an IO DATA Ethernet Converter WN-G54/C which promises MAc compatibility.
Problem is the instruction book is Japanese only and I see no Eng one on the net. Probablty not released yet.
On the other hand, assume these all must work sort of the same.
Cannot get it to work, though it seems to recognize something.
Just to make sure..can I NOT connect to my Aiport base station with a mac connected via a product like this ethernet converter, which seems to allow such connections?
And do I just igore the IO data settings and try to configure it through the Airport application? It seems the airport connection is for apple cards to connect to apple or non apple networks.
But here i think I have to use the IO data ethernet converter application to connect to the apple or other networks?
Anyway, I JUST realized my Powerbook has an Apple airport card in it, as i tried to turn it on even without the IO data in,s o this is a mute point for now.
but if i ever need the IO data (it seems it may have a stronger ability to pull in the signal as it has a big antenna on it), i would like to undersatnd how it works.
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine just killed two external HD

    Hi All,
Time Machine (TM) just killed two external hard disk drives.  I am running 10.8.3 on a MPB 2.3 GHz I7 with 16GB SDRAM and I have had problems with TM not recognizing the external hard disks.  I purchased a new 2TB firewire HD and started TM and about 2 hours into the backup TM error out with an error and the disk no longer is recognized and can't be initialized using the disk utility as it says there are zero bytes available.
I reconnected my MBP to the original MT HD and it proceeded to do the same thing and the HD is no longer recognized and can't be initialized...
Anyone else seen this or have a clue how to fix it?

Open Disk Utility and select the disk device (not the volume name). Then click the Partition tab that appears, and use the drop-down menu to create "1 Partition." Then click the Options button and ensure "GUID" is used, and then select the Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format and apply the changes.
When finished, set up Time Machine again and see if the problem persists. If so, then the issue is likely with the drive.
If it does happen again, are you able to select the drive in Disk Utility and perform a verification on it? If so, then are you able to see any errors? Do this by selecting the drive itself, as well as any volumes on it.

  • Safari crashes on just abotu every page - with Javascript

OK, I know this sounds similar to half a dozen or more other posts, but I've read those, and none of the solutions work. If I have javascript enabled, almost any site I visit will cause Safari to crash. I've filed countless crash reports, but never heard a word. I can open Safari only by loading an empty html file from my desktop. I can access my RSS feeds, since they have no js. Just about every page with js crashes the browser before it even displays. This started happening 2 full days after updating quicktime and my macbook firmware, but they were 2 days of heavy use.
The problem persists if I use a different account on the same box. The problem persists if I create a new account on the same box. I have cleared all caches and plists AND removed every single plugin. Still no fix. I have ensured that there are no font duplicates in Font Book. Still no joy. I'm not about to reinstall my entire OS to fix a problem with buggy software, especially since I need my computer operating correctly right now. I really want my Safari back, please. Hi
just to be certain here - you removed all the plug-ins - even the Flash ones?
I would try downloading and applying the OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (Intel). This is a near 300MB download, but the combo updates often cure unusual problems like yours,.

  • My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account?

My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account? I was looking through the photo section on my iPhone and found pics my daughter has taken from her iPod. I do not want my pics, emails, etc to show up on her iPod. Is there a way to stop this from happening or do I have to create a different Apple ID for her to use instead?

If you have iOS 8 on all devices then:
If under 13 years create a new ID for her by:
Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support
The use family sharing to share apps
    http://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/family-sharing/
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
If underage and not i)S on all devices then you have to create an ID for here under your name and supervise it use:
Create a NEW account using these instructions so yo do not have to use a credit card.
Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
    More details of how:
    http://ipadhelp.com/ipad-help-tips-tricks/how-to-get-free-apps-from-the-app-stor e-without-a-credit-card/
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

  • I was downloading an app and it wasnt downloadnig so i turned my ipod off and now its a just a black screen with the the loading circle. Its been like that for 10 hours. How do i get back to my home screen?

I was downloading an app and it wasnt downloadnig so i turned my ipod off and now its a just a black screen with the the loading circle. Its been like that for 10 hours. How do i get back to my home screen? or how do i get the litle loading circle to go away.. it wont even load into itunes

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Disconnect the iPad, do a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!, reconnect and follow the prompts.

    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Featurs appin the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost
