I just lost my entire desktop

I completely lost my desktop and there is a message that says there has been an error with itunes application #13014.
Now all I have is a blank screen.  Can get the internet, but no desktop/icons etc.
What should I do now?
Thanks!

Glad to be of help. I hate to say it, but If your music moved to the trash there is something seriously wrong going on. Any ideas what precipitated that?
I tend to do a test re-import of my library every now and then to make sure my songs are tagged correctly and everything is fine. You may be in a situation where your library database didn't update somehow. I'd consider copying the whole thing to an external (maybe even twice). Then trashing your prefs (back them up too) and launching itunes fresh then using the add to library feature to add your files. You will lose a lot of data that's in the database (probably ratings, last played, play count, etc), but you'll also have a solid library and current db. It's slightly painful, but losing all your music...forget that... You will also want to make a smart playlist w/ 'protected' as one of the search criteria so that your purchases now show up there in your new library.
You may also want to consider updating your id3 tags on a BACKUP using the existing database (the hope being to fill as many tags as possible instead of the dbase).
Another thing to keep in mind is that the new itunes database remembers your libraries, so it's possible to have a song in your home directory and a video on an external drive. If you consolidate you will possibly run out of space or get tons of duplicates. So make sure you get ALL your files in one place. If that's not possible then I'd say the method to use is create the base library on your boot drive w/ your 'needed' files, load that, then change libraries in the prefs and your additional files should become available.
Ok, either that or my itunes magically stored stuff in two places .
Seriously though, re-adding your library and losing some extraneous information every once in a while is better than losing your entire library right?
Good Luck,
-j

  • JUST LOST MY ENTIRE OUTLOOK CALENDAR!!   How do I retrieve?

I synced up my iphone and lost my entire Outlook calendar - past and present and future. This is a big problem!!
I did it the way I normally do - letting the iphone do its thing through itunes.
I've only done it a few times as the phone is new to me so I let it work automatically.
Any ideas? Any way to restore it?
    Desperate...
    Thanks

Depending on the type of backup software you are using and how outlook's file system works you may be able to restore just the calendar.
I would consult the website for your backup software and http://www.microsoft.com for more information.

  • Lost my entire "desktop" after restoring files with Wondershare Dr. Fone. Does anyone know how to get it back without purchasing their software?

I was trying to recover a deleted text message and used Wondershare Dr. Fone to load previously deleted messages.
I didn't find the message that I was looking for, but when I went back to my "desktop" - all my apps were rearranged and there was a photo I had set as the background 2 years ago. When I opened their program again to try and restore my desktop, I was prompted to purchase their software, which I cannot affort to do.
Like many people, I rely on my phone almost as much as an extra appendange and am clueless as to how I can recover my icloud, apps, etc without spending any money.
Do you have any suggestions. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Pretty bad reviews for that software.

  • I just upgraded to Lion and lost my entire address book. Ack. Fix?

I just upgraded to Lion and so far so good,  EXCEPT I lost my entire address book. EVERY contact  missing. I didn't back up my address book before the upgrade (see me slap head) altho did have my contacts on my iPhone, slightly out of date, but more current than my last Mac backup. So I followed the iPhone to iCloud to Mac contact synch steps and the contacts repopulated on my Mac but WITHOUT the mailing ADDRESSES. Now addresses are also gone from my iPhone.
Is it possible to revert to the  Snow Leopard address data file? And if so, how do I do this? Or is there a better fix?

I had the same problem and also didn't have a back-up of my SL Address Book archive. But a minute or so's mucking about I came up with this workaround:
    1) Quit Address Book and in the Finder, hold down Option, click on Go in the menubar and choose Library.
    2) Go to Application Support/Address Book.
    3) In that folder you should see a file called Migration XXXXX-XXX.abbu.tbz (that's a compressed TAR file). The "XXXs" will be a jumble of numbers which from what I can gather relate to the date when you upgraded to Lion. Open it using the free Unarchiver program available for download from the App Store.
    4) This will open up a folder also called Migration XXXX-XXX. Click the flippy triangle to the left and you'll see it contains the Contact Book archives that existed before you upgraded to Lion, including any images and most importantly the Metadata (the names, addresses etc).
    5) Move the Metadata folder from the Migration folder up into the main Library/Application Support/Address Book folder. You will get an alert saying the folder already exists: click Replace. I also replaced the existing AddressBook-v22.abcddb file from the Migration folder as well. I don't use images in Address Book so I didn't replace that: if you do, you probably do want to replace that folder too.
    6) Open Address Book and gasp in wonder to find all your contacts resurrected.
Since it's an Apple app that you've been playing around with, run Repair permissions to tidy things up.
    Hope this helps.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

  • I have lost my entire IPhoto Library and albums

    IMac OS X  V 10.6.8
I have lost my entire IPhoto Library and albums.
    How do I restore?

Your only other option is to stop using your Mac as soon as possible to minimize precious data being overwritten to, purchase a high quality, fast external hard drive, preferably a FIreWire external hard drive such as these
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
using an OS X Snow Leopard install disc, format this external drive as a Mac OS extended (journaled) formatted hard drive with a GUID partition scheme and then, using a install disc of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, install a fresh copy of OS X Snow Leopard and boot your Mac to that external hard drive by using the Startup Disc icon in the OS X System Preferences Panel to boot your Mac to the external hard drive. Once your Mac is booted and running from this hard drive,  then use the OS X Software Update feature to update that version of OS X Snow Leopard to OS X 10.6.8.
Then, you need to do a web search for a Data recovery software such as Prosoft Engineering's Data Rescue and purchase, download, install and use this software to perform data recovery of your iMac's internal hard drive following the proper instructions on how to use the software. to recover the data.
Be advised that any images you recover will no longer be in a format that IPhoto will read and most like will just be a folder with just the images alone without any more linkage to the IPhoto library, but I am not completely sure about this as I always have redundant backups of my entire system.
If this seems all too complicated and complex to you, you need to stop using your Mac ASAP and either contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorised reseller/service/repair center to find out how much it will cost for them to recover your data and bring your Mac in for a more professional data recovery.
I still strongly advise you purchase a high quality, large storage, fast, external hard drive to use for future data backups to prevent such a catastrophic data loss from happening, again.
Every  computer user SHOULD have, at least, one external backup drive and having redundant backup drives is even better.

  • Help Please- just lost 5600 songs

I have two things going very wrong, please help.
1.I have had trouble dropping songs into iTunes. i have searched the forums and I am very frustrated at the amount of people having the same problem with no resolution. i tried to drop 20 concerts into iTunes and only 2 showed up. These shows play in Quicktime and I know that they're not all corrupt. i doubt any of them are. I tried saving to a flash drive and they still wouldn't drop in. I tried importing the shows, tried importing the songs, but to no avail. I tried saving the music into another folder on the desktop and they still wouldn't drop into iTunes.
    2. This is the biggie. My harddrive isn't very big so after I save the music onto my ipod i have to erase it. So I have 5000 songs that can't play because they're not stored onto the hard drive anymore. So I selected all of the songs that aren't able to play anymore and erased them from iTunes. I recently synced the ipod and now I've lost all 5600 songs. Please help before I ruin anything else.
    Thanks,
    -Norman

It's very frustrating because I had tried to add the files like you said, but to no avail. But there hasn't been a reason stated as to why we can't add the files. The only answer seems to be that that's the way it is and we'll have to live with it. I know the files aren't corrupt, the format is the same, they're from a sharing website and there's no copyright protection or anything like that on them. iTunes just doesn't do it. I'm kinda sick to my stomach right now
And now i just lost 5600 songs

  • IMovie crashed. Completely lost an ENTIRE PROJECT

I just recently updated my Macbook pro to OS X Mavericks Version 10.9 and so I also updated my iMovie to Version 10.0.1. I used it the whole day yesterday and it kept crashing everytime I used the "Ken Burns" crop tool specifically. It will first lag then crash. Or My entire macbook would lag then I'd have to restart it. So when it came down to me about to export it just doing the final touches, I used the tool again then t lagged (OF COURSE) and I had to restart. The difference this time was, when I restarted my macbook, I opened iMovie again and IT LOST MY ENTIRE PROJECT. IT WASN'T THERE. It says that there are two projects but I can only see one which I did earlier. The other is nowhere to be found.
Does anyone know how I can recover my project? I friggin' worked hard on that and all was loss. I haven't set up my time machine.
Is there still a way that I can recover my lost project?
    Please help!

Same thing happened to me, luckily I just started a new project, but Its very annoying, a tool that use to work is now all of a sudden useless . . . or less effective cause you can't make use of the crop function.
I'm considering rebuilding my machine with old version of OSX.
Is there a fix for this ?

  • When will Tiger work properly?!?!?  I just lost over 1000 of my addresses!!

Tiger has been a complete pain in the *** for me since day one. With every upgrade, I pray that it's been fixed. 10.4.4 seemed be better. And YET, just an hour or so ago, I lost my entire data base of business customers from my address book. And it might be permanent. I just spent the last hour trying to salvage as much as I could from my home computer and the same bug that caused me to lose everything appears not to be a fluke as Address Book is locking up on searches, just like what happened before it happened on the other computer. This never happened before and I just lost data worth $thousands to me. Tens of $thousands actually. Exactly what the **** is going on at Apple? Does anyone know how to find my address and restore them? Address book won't recognize any of the files from the looks of it. Now I'm worried of losing all of what little I have left.

I doubt if you've lost them, only just can't find them in the current account. They're there somewhere! Might be something like this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/4.0/en/ad1074.html
Has your home folder moved/changed names/been deleted?
Are you logged on as usual?

  • Whoa! Just Lost Address Book

My Address Book just vanished! Well, more correctly, all the data inside it vanished.
I was working away, happily, when suddenly my address type automator in mail stopped filling in the rest of the addresses. Then I responded to a request in iChat, and iChat crashed. I tried to open iChat again, and the welcome screen came up, as if I had never set up my iChat before.
So I opened Address Book and whoops, there was absolutely no data/no cards inside it. As if I had just started.
I presume that my Address Book app lost contact with the database, and since mail and iChat work heavily from Address Book, they both were crippled or crashed.
What happened? How do I reconnect the Address Book app with the data? This sounds a little scary to me, and I've been around the block at least a few times.
    Thanks!
(I have the data in use on .mac, and on my iPhone, too.)

You're on 10.4.9, right? Wasn't that the unstable one........ I remember a friend of mine also lost his entire Address Book about 6 months ago........... you might want to update too, before you go get your back up.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.

  • Entire Desktop Documents Disappear!!!

I sure hope someone can help me as I'm about to go into panic attack mode (yes I have a backup, but it's from 3 weeks ago!!!)....
I was working on my Al PB tonight (OS 10.3.9) and went to open my QuickBooks application. Suddenly, I get a message stating my update won't work because I need at least 100 bytes of HD space and I don't have enough. Actually, my PB ha over 40 GB left!!!
Anyway, I go to quit out of the program and suddenly all the documents saved on my Desktop disappear! Gone! I went to check in the HD icon and nothing...did searches on documents saved on the Desktop....results = 0!!!!
I went to reboot the computer and I restored the desktop documents from my back-up discs...I tried again to open QB...my entire desktop disappeared again!! I tried to download the WhatSize application...it won't open on my desktop! I get an error message and it quits out.
Please help! Everything inside the Macntosh HD icon is intact...the documents folder, my prefs, my music, my pictures.....just the desktop stuff keeps disappearing on me....HELP!!!!

I've been up 1/2 the night with this one...this is what I found:
    http://quickbooksgroup.com/webx/forums/mac/1907/0
I called them this morning and they're working on a patch. I was also told that "really" our files haven't been deleted, but the patch is preventing us from being able to "see" our files and they're working on this too....
In the meantime, I restored my information to a folder on my Documents folder (not the Desktop) and followed the directions to the QB program, so I could use it without getting the error message and the deleted desktop...
    Hope it helps somewhat...
