  • I have an iPhone in my name and my wife has an iPad in her name. We have just ordered an iMac and wondered which account we should use to get the best out of all the devices

I have an iPhone in my name and my wife has an iPad in her name. We have just ordered an iMac and wondered which account we should use to get the best out of all the devices? Can we use both accounts in iCloud?

Yes you can.  However, it is better to use one person's account most of the time for purchases in the Mac App Store and iTunes since you can share purchases, such as songs, among various devices using the SAME account.  You Cannot share purchases among different accounts, though.   So make one of your accounts the main "purchasing" account so you can share purchases.
    Hope this helps

    Hi Pompey Woody,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you need to use a different Apple ID (iTunes Store account) with iTunes on your Mac, you can sign out and then back in with the other account:
Open iTunes. ...select Store > Sign Out, then select Store > Sign In and enter your current Apple ID.

  • I haven't used my desktop iMac in a long time and can't get pass the opening login...I thought I remembered my password, but, apparently not.  How do I change it.  I don't THINK I have a "master password" on the thing.  I've never used one on any of

I haven't used my IMac in a long time and went to boot it up, and I find I don't remember the correct username and password (I use several computers..I try to keep the passwords similar, with a number for the chronological order in which I started using them) I've tried all the others I use for passwords. The 'hint" keeps coming up for the password I am pretty sure is the correct one, but, still cannot get in.  I also don't remember whether I changed my surname on the computer...it was changed legally a little while ago, but some of my older devices still have my birth-name in there)
    HELP
I don't think I ever set up a "master password" on the thing...I never use those.  I am the only person with access to my personal devices.

  • Just order new imac... was it smart

I just ordered a new imac computer with quad core i5. 2.8 Ghz processor 1 gig video card and 8 gig of ram 27 inch screen. Now all the boards and rumors are saying the new thunderbolt on macbooks and I undersand it wont be backwards compatible. Did I do a not so smart thing. I want the new ipad and gonna get the next iphone when it comes out so I will be going all mac. Just having 2nd thoughts on maybe I moved too fast for an imac. But then again will anyone ever keep up with tech? Your thoughts?

I just went through that decision process a few days ago. I ended up ordering a refurbished 2.93 i7 and 16GB Samsung memory from OWC. I have already received the memory and the iMac is scheduled to be delivered on Monday (Feb 28).
I was going to wait for the new iMacs and decided not to do so for a couple of reasons:
    1. The first release of any product usually has a high failure rate and the Apple products are no exception. Unless you actually like being on the bleeding edge it is better to wait a while. Most of the pervasive bugs in the current i7 line have been worked out.
    2. There are only a couple of things that may be in the new iMacs that I could use...Sandybridge and Thunderbolt.
I did an extensive comparison between the current i7 and an i7 Sandybridge and decided that for my use Sandybridge would only give me a slight increase in speed.
I also think that Thunderbolt has a good chance of succeeding, but like all new I/O 'standards' it will take a while for it to gain traction. Products that work well with it will be few and far between for a while, maybe a year or more.
Only time will tell if I made the "Right" choice, but in this instance there is no "Wrong" choice.

  • What external Hard drive can I get to use w/ my iMac and Macbook pro w/ Lion software? I have never used one. I need to back up my photos, iTunes, documenta, etc., Im a nursing student and very worried about losing my stuff. Any suggestions?

I have had my macbook pro and desktop since 2008 now.  I have never had time to just sit down and learn about time machine and external hard drives.  I am in nursing school and barely have time to breathe, so when I try to read the threads, all the tech terms run together.  I have been referred to LaCIe, but I read some things saying problems with Lion (which I am highly disapointed in so far-but like I said, I have not had a lot of time to sit down and try to figure out out the kinks), Is there a good external harddrive anyone reccommends that will be easy/simple (not because I am lazy- I literally have no time w/ all my school work to figure out something complicated) , and go with my desk top and lap top?
My laptop started messing up in class the other day, and it has a lot of memory left, so I don't understand.  It kept freezing up like a PC.  Ever since I downloaded Lion, it seems my computers have gotten slower. ;(    I have MacKeeper downloaded on both of them. I cleaned stuff off, it seems to be working better right now. But I am still soooo scared that something will happen and I will lose all of my info.
I would be grateful of any advice/suggestions that anyone can give me.
    Thanks

Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.

  • I just bought a mac and have never used one.  I need help.

i have no idea what i am doing.  I have always used a pc.  now i have a mac mini.

Stedman1 has posted a great link. I strongly recommend against the Mac for Dummies. At some point the Dummy books began to believe they were for dummies rather than for newbies. The Missing Manual series is very good. If you were a comfortable Windows users the book I recommend is Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Mavericks Edition because it will build on what you already know and understand. Otherwise just get the OS X Mavericks: The Missing Manual version.

  • Just ordered new iMac do I still need a modem/router for Internet access

Just  converted to apple, ordered a new IMAC but little confused on Internet access.
does the extreme still need a modem/router,just a little confused after reading all the comments about poor connections etc.
Old windows soldier sorry if a little vague .

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

  • New iMac - Never Use The Administrator Account?

    Hi,
I read somewhere that if you're setting up a new iMac, you should never actually use the Administrator user account. You should create a Standard account for yourself. Is this true? How many people do this? Surely if you're not the administrator of your own computer you can restricted from installing applications and changing system settings?

It's really a matter of security. If you are the only person using your computer then there's really no need for two accounts unless you are concerned that someone will have access to your computer when you are not there. If you have multiple users, then it's a good idea to have all users limited to standard accounts for security purposes.
My computers are only used by me and only accessible to me. Thus, they are all set up such that my account is an admin account.
If there is a concern that your computer could be available to unauthorized personnel, then it's a good idea to have both an admin and a standard account..

  • My macbook pro just told me someone was using one if my wireless ip addresses

has anyone had this happen.  I got a quick message that an ip address of mine was being used????  Is this part of Lion I just got this macbook pro

This is often a problem caused by a poorly configured or non-existent DHCP server. Check your router settings and make sure that DHCP is enabled and configured to allow a significant number of IPs to be assigned for a reasonable amount of time. If you don't have access to the DHCP server on your network (ie You are at school, work, etc.) then contact your network administrator and they can help you with the problem.
More information about your computer and network is really required to provide a better tailored answer.
    For example:
What type of network? (Home, work, school)
What is providing the network? (cable modem, dsl router, wireless router, etc)
    Who set it up?
Do you know how to configure your network preferences?
Do you know how to configure your network equipment?

  • HT4061 why after downloading the new IOS does my phone have now need a passcode and it didn't before and I don't have one cause ive never used one

I need to know ASAP because I don't really want to restore to factory settings

Not sure if this applies to your region, but in Australia the SIM password is often written on the "credit card" sized plastic card that the SIM was provided to you with the phone by the telco. Do you still have this? It could be in the iPhone box?

  • Just got a iMac love it but have had problem with iTunes gets stuck at m with syncing its stuck at "waiting to copy" any ideas

Just got imac love it but have an issue with itunes gets stuck "waiting to copy" do I really need to return phone to orginal setting?

Remove the song in question from the sync list and see if the rectifies the problem.
If it does, then iTunes believes the song no longer exists on your drive and that will need to be corrected.

  • Today I download the new iOS in my iPAD, now it is asking me for a passcode I do not have one! never use

How can I find my iPAD passcode? today I down load the new iOS in my iPAD and now ask me for passcode, I never use one!

It may just be asking you to provide a passcode. Try entering a passcode you would use. If that doesn't do the trick, then it means you have Find My Phone enabled when you upgraded. You will need to disable it and restore the device:
Is Find My Phone turned on?
You'll have to login to iCloud.com, from any computer, locate, then erase your phone. Once done, restore from backup, if you have one.
That's the only way for you to fix this.
