I have just paid to be able to convert pdf to word but get the message file is password protected. Have I wasted my money or is there a solution?

This suggests that the file itself is protected, and the person who made it did not want it converted.
You can check this in Adobe Reader by using File > Properties and looking under Securty. What does it show? (Screen shot wouldn't hurt).
