I just purchased a used imac how do I clear then reinstall new os

Klaus1 is perhaps too brief if you have not done that before:
1. Put first DVD in the optical drive
2. restart and, immediately after chime, press C—this forces boot from CD/DVD, wait until you see Apple logo, then release C key
3. wait until you see the list of install languages, English is default, click ahead and now
4. Go up and choose Utilities, open Disk Utility, and choose to Erase/Format disk, as you wish
5. Close Disk Utilities and you will be redirected to installation proper
6. Go ahead according to what you see on the screen
If you do not have the two DVDs of any mac (bar the very recent ones, with Lion preinstalled), you must get a retail one, perhaps SL would be best or Lion, flash drive version directly. Booting from retail DVD is identical; for flash boot, press Option key after chime, then choose the USB flash disk, you will see it on the screen after several seconds.
The process is simple and logical, do not be afraid, you just need the install DVD or, beginning with Lion, Lion flash drive version. You may of course download the App Store version of Lion, which is at half price approx., but you need another mac to move it to another disk / flash drive in order to install it or do that before you erase the disk which, I understand, has a running system on it.

I just bought a used Imac that is Yosemite compatible.   I would like to wipe all the previous owners info.  How can I do this

you don't want to erase the hard drive if you do not have the disk to reinstall OS X.  You need a Disk.

  • Just purchased a used iMac and need to wipe it clean.

I just purchased a 2011 24" iMac used.  The previous owner did not remove anything.  I would like to wipe it clean before I run Time Machine from an external drive to load my programs, data etc.  What is the best way to wipe clean (completely clean) the iMac.  Also, would I be better off loading all of the programs from the original CD's rather than Time Machine?  I don't know if I could have picked up "stuff" over the years that I don't want brought to this newer machine.
Also, I would like to upgrade to the latest OS Lion.  Should I do this first or after the wipe?
    Thanks!

Did your iMac come with Lion (10.7) installed or did the seller buy that at the app store?
If the seller purchased it, then you will need the original install DVDs (Snow Leopard), either from the seller or by calling Apple and giving them your serial number. The reason: the license for any OS or app obtained at the app store is not transferable - the seller is obligated to wipe the drive and reinstall the original system. The OS is tied to the Apple ID of the purchaser forever and you will never be able to reinstall.
If it turns out yours came with Lion, the seller was supposed to call Apple and make a transfer of the OS to you.
So, the first thing to do is to figure out which OS version it came with and, if you have the install disks (Snow Leopard), then use them to wipe the drive and reinstall the original system. After that, you can purchase Lion (or Mountain Lion) at the app store using your own Apple ID.

  • I Just purchased a used MacBook Air but it has no OS, how can I re-load the OS?

I Just purchased a used MacBook Air but it has no OS, how can I re-load the OS?

It depends on which operating system was on it when it was released.  Older MBAs need disks or a special thumb drive to boot for OS recovery.
Let’s assume it is new enough that it has a recovery partition built in.  You can try this and see if it works and if it doesn’t work then it is old enough to need he aforementioned recovery media.
It is simple.  First you format the system disk and then you install OS X.
You will need to be in an area with a good wireless Internet signal.
    Boot in Recovery Mode:
Power it on and when you hear the bong hold down the Command and R keys simultaneously.
    Format the system disk:
    > Disk Utility
    > Select your system drive.
    > Partition
    > Partition Layout: 1 Partiton
    > Options...
    > GUID Partition Table
    > OK
    > Name: Macintosh HD
    > Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    > Apply
    > Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility
    Install OS X:
    > Click on Install OS X and follow the instructions.

    Hal

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

  • HT1338 I just purchased a used MacBook that is running Mac os X 10.6.8. Many of the things I try to download need newer software, but I can't get it to download. Is there anything I can do?

I just purchase a used MacBook. It is running os 10.6.8. Is there anyway I can upgrade to Lion?

You can upgrade to ML directly from SL. Why do you want Lion? ML=$19.99, Lion=$29.99 (or something like that if I'm not mistaken) but that was when Lion was on the Mac App Store (MAS). Unless you had purchased Lion previously, you won't find it on the MAS. Now, Lion may be available only at  Retail Stores on USB (which would probably be more than $30) or you might have to talk to someone at their online store (some of the posters in the forum have said they were able to order it at the online store-not sure if they got it though)

  • Just purchased a used G4 and need some help

First, let me say, that I am finally returning to the fold after years of working on a PC (employers insisted) but have just purchased a used G4 running OS 10.3.8 I've registered the G4 and everything, and tried to update the OS. I got a "mounting failed" message. It may be because the previous owner left a password in the automatic update file and didn't tell me what it was. Also, they did not provide me with the original installation discs so I could use administrator access to disable this password! Anyway, I want to update the OS as far as it can go - any idea how I can do this? I've searched around the apple site for a while now, seeing if I could purchase replacement installation discs, but can't find any into. If I just go ahead and purchase the 10.4 upgrade, can I install it without upgrading from 10.3.8?
Sorry if these are basic questions, but my last mac was an Apple IIc be kind.

    Hello nebpen,
"While the lamp hold out to burn, the vilest sinner may return!"
    Welcome back!
As the Texas Mac Man says, you need the install CDs (and Applerescue is a good source). Your DA will run any Apple OS out there at its latest update. I happen to prefer Panther, mostly, I suppose, because it's simpler ... or run them both!
Further, IMHO, the DA is the sweet spot in balancing cost and performance. I'm still feeling my way with upgrades, but every day mine seems to run better. I've just discovered how to adapt an 867mhz QS cpu, so the backup is now running faster than the Main Mac, and I even had to install Tiger (10.4.10) to take advantage of the latest Google Earth. What incredible pictures!
    Anyhow, welcome!
    Jon

  • Hi, can anyone tell me, if i purchase a used iphone4, how will i be able to register it with my apple id? currently what ever i do it asks me for the apple id and password of the previous owner. Please help

hi, can anyone tell me, if i purchase a used iphone4, how will i be able to register it with my apple id? currently what ever i do it asks me for the apple id and password of the previous owner. Please help

you have to restore to ios 6 and then sign in with your own apple id,
any apps etc on the iphone now, will not be able to be backed up and used in the future as they are not linked to your apple ID. and if you plan on using the previous owners ID then you need there [*** which I assume you dont have.
simply just restore using itunes then setup as new with all your details and your done, you can go to the appstore and start getting your own apps

  • I recently purchased a used iMac and cannot load iPhoto and other apps?

I recently purchased a used iMac.  It was wiped clean and has the newest version of Mac OSX installed.
When I go to the app store, it shows iPhoto and has an accept prompt next to it, though when i enter my apple id to accept, it says I cannot do that as it was previously accepted, obviously by original owner.  It says i could purchase it, but there is no available prompt to purchase it.
Questions: Do i have to purchase?  How do i go about doing that?
    Thanks!

If the machine was originally configured for Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or earlier  you should have gotten the original DVDs, one of which had the iLife apps on it. If it came with Lion already pre-installed you can try Lion Recovery, OS X Lion: About but I doubt it will download the iLife apps for you. In short you probably have to buy them or get the original DVDs from the seller. Another option is to call AppleCare and for a nominal cost they will replace the original media. You can find their number by using the AppleCare Contact Info link.

    See my Mac Malware Guide.
This issue is more complex than some of the responses you have gotten are indicating. You definitely should avoid Norton, but there actually IS malware out there, and all anti-virus software is NOT "snake oil." Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, as they don't know what they're talking about.
Although you should be able to do without anti-virus software just fine, there are some perfectly good reasons to install it and some good anti-virus apps to use if you decide to do so. Further, even if you do avoid anti-virus software, you need to understand what the threats are so you don't end up thinking you're totally safe and do something you shouldn't.
