I just purchased my first ThinkPad!

I went with the T500.  I'm coming from a Macbook Pro Unibody (quite the difference eh?).  I came to the realization that a PC is better suited for my needs.
So any suggestions or advice?  What can I expect?  And if anybody has experience with both the T500 and Macbook Pro, I would love to hear from you!
Thanks.

I'm kind of curious as to why you didn't just run Windows on your Macbook Pro.  What were the hardware features of the T500 that you needed that the Macbook Pro didn't have? That's a big chunk of change to abandon a laptop that has essentially the same hardware instead, just with an Ati 3650 instead of a nVidia 9600M (assuming you got the integrated option)
That's a fair question.  I guess a simple answer to that is - bad decision making on my part. Not that the Macbook Pro isn't capable because it is!  However, at the end of the day I'm better off working with a PC than a Mac simply because the tools I use (Software Developer) are all Microsoft.  Sure, I can use boot camp or even a virtual machine all day (which I have) but it seems silly because nothing on OS X is a necessity for me, whereas Windows IS because of the tool-set I use.
So with that said, I purchased the T500 for $1400.  Overall the hardware and options is better than the Macbook, which was purchased for $1999 before tax.  The base Macbook Pro has a max limit of 4 gigs of ram where the T500 has 8.  Aside from that, I think I will greatly benefit from the extra bump in resolution 1680x1050 vs. 1440x900. The T500 is more future proof.
So, at the end of the day it was simply a bad purchase on my part.  I love Apple and I think the Macbook Pro is fantastic; it's just that the T500 will serve me with better hardware options at a lower cost (however the cost is moot now!)
Lesson learned!

I have just purchased my first iPod touch and I cannot transfer my music from my laptop. The sync button does not appear to work. What have I done wrong? I am a grandma trying to keep up with technology please help.

Connect it to your computer and restore it as a new device. Then chose what music you want to sync with it and do so just like your Touch does.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

There are no known viruses for OS X.  If you have to worry about a website putting some malware on your computer, then you should not visit it any longer.  Find a legitimate site.

  • I have an iPad 4 generation and just purchased my first apple cell phone. I am having problems figuring out how to sync the 2. I called Verizon and because my iPad isn't using the 4G it can (I just haven't needed to use it) the tech person can't do it.

I have an iPad 4 generation 4G and just purchased my first iPhone an Apple 5s. I need help synching the two. I have never needed to use the 4G Verizon option so Versizon tech said they can't do it and Apple needs to. But I no longer have Applecare and it doesn't yet recogniz my Applecare with my new phone (new yesterday). Anyone know the steps so I can sync the two and sync the Clouds then? Thanks

You cannot sync the two devices together. You can keep the two devices in sync by using iCloud and some of the available settings on both devices. Go to Settings>iCloud and you can turn on Reminders , Calendars, Notes, Safari Bookmarks, Contacts, Photo Stream, Mail, Keychain, etc.
You can go to Settings>iTunes and App Store>Automatic Downloads and turn on apps, songs, books and updates to keep all of those items in sync as well.
But why don't you explain exactly what you mean by syncing the two devices? What do you hope to accomplish?

If you are using a Bluetooth keyboard on your iPad device, you should take advantage of the keyboard shortcuts for quicker access to copy, cut, paste, undo, redo, and other commands.
    Command + C : Copy Selected Text
    Command + V : Paste
Command + X: Cut Selected Text
    Command + Z: Undo
    Command + Shift + Z: Redo
Command + Delete: Delete everything to the left of the cursor on the current line
Option + Delete: Delete the word to the left of the cursor
Command + Up Arrow: Go to top of document
Command + Down Arrow: Go to bottom of document
Command + Left Arrow: Go to beginning of current line
Command + Right Arrow: Go to end of current line
    F1: Dim screen
    F2: Brighten screen
    F7: Back one song
    F8: Play/pause song
    F9: Skip song
    F10: Mute
    F11: Decrease volume
    F12: Increase volume
Eject button: Show or hide onscreen keyboard

  • Just ordered my first Thinkpad (X1 Carbon). How can I do a clean Windows 8 install?

I just ordered my first Thinkpad - I got the X1 Carbon. Adding Windows 8 Pro was an additional $50, but I already have a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade disc and the external DVD drive to install it. Is there anything specific to Thinkpads that I need to know when doing clean install of Windows 8?

    Hi, masonade
Firstly, you'll want to make sure you have the latest BIOS, found here. Secondly, you need to boot into the BIOS by pressing Enter at POST to interrupt startup and then press F1 to go into BIOS. Once in BIOS, Secure Boot underneath Security ► Secure Boot needs to be set to Disabled and Boot mode underneath Startup needs to be set to UEFI. Once this is done, connect the external drive and interrupt startup at POST again, but now press F12 to choose and boot from the external device. Then all that needs to be done is follow the instructions to install Windows 8.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • I have just purchased my first Apple computer, a MacBook Pro, running Lion (10.7.4).  My wife bought her MacBook Pro six months ago.  I had data from my old PC transferred to my new MacBook, but, for some reason, my superuser ID comes up as my wife.

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro.  My wife's MacBook Pro is less than a year old.  When I start up my new computer, it thinks I am my wife and gives me the option of logging on as my wife or as a guest user.  How do I correct this misidentification?  Thanks.  [email protected]

This sounds like you may have migrated in Setup Assistant from her MBP?
EDIT: (Or whatever you migrated from the PC had her account data)
I also think you mean your login ID, not the Superuser, unless you've enabled root. In that case it would say "root"
Let's try it easy first. Create a new account and make it an Admin. Name it your name or whatever. This will be your account. Next login as your wife and move ehatever Documents you want from that account into /Users/Shared.
Now log back into your own account and drag the items from the Shared folder into your Documents folder.
If this works and you no longer need your wife's account on the Mac you can delete it in System Preferences > Users&Groups.

  • I have just purchased my first MacBook Pro and it is pretty fantastic. I own the disks for Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate, and Office 2010 Professional Plus, and need to run them in this Mac. 32 bit discs. Can this happen in boot camp?

I am trying to run Windows and Mac OS on my brand new MacBook Pro. I need to be able to boot to either one. I don't need a lot of hard drive space for the Windows OS. However, the software discs I own for Windows are 32 bit install. Is there a way to run this with what I have? I have the new MacBook 13 in. with retina display. 2.6Ghz i5 with 8GB RAM and 512 GB PCIe Hard drive.

Hi guys! I have a new Macbook Pro purchased from Best Buy yesterday. I had the Geek Squad upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs (They only had PNY brand, I was concerned but went with it anyway). I had them install Boot Camp Windows 7 Ultimate. Today I picked it up and when I started playing with it I learned that they installed the 32 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate instead of the 64 bit version, why, I have NO IDEA.
So, I want to replace the Win 7 installation with the 64 bit version but have read that this can be tricky. What is the proper way to do this? I'm not sure I trust the Geek Squad to do this for me.
I assume I need to reformat the Windows partition, defragment and then install the 64 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate, but am not completely sure. I want to be sure that I do NOT do anything that could affect the Mac side
    What do you guys think?
I think you should take it back to the Geeks and tell them what you want, I also think you should backup before you do.
You do not need to reformat or repartition, you need to reinstall Windows from a 64bit copy, 32 & 64 have identical requirements as far as partition and format go, defragmenting has nothing at all to do with your needs.

  • I just purchase my first macbook air and i don't know how to download my microsoft office 2010 that i have already purchased for my old computer. Do i need to purchase again for the microsoft office for the mac?

I have a windows computer before i purchased my mac and i had already spend $500 for microsoft office professional 2010, i would ike to know if i can download the same one to my macbook air and how to do it. please need help!

The problem is that your Office 2010 package is a Windows application, and Windows softare doesn't run natively under MacOS. As a result, you can't simply download it or install it on your MacBook Air.
You can set up your MacBook Air to run Windows as well as MacOS, using either Boot Camp (where you pick whether to run Windows or MacOS each time the system starts, but you can't run both at the same time) or using a 'virtual' Windows installation (where you use software such as VMware to create a virtual Windows machine which you run as a window inside MacOS), but in either case you'll need a licence for Windows, plus the virtualisation software if you want to go that route. In other words, it's not simple, though in either case your Office software would be usable.
Some software houses are prepared to cross-licence software in this sort of instance - they'll allow a copy for one platform to lapse and charge a relatively low amount for new copy, on the basis that the user has already paid full price, but Microsoft generally don't seem generally cooperative in that instance.

  • HT1386 HI I need help, I just purchased my first Ipad I have an i phone, ipods for kids and a mac computer.  all of them show in my itunes account I can sinc music, blah blah, manage devices.  for some reason when I plug my ipad in it doesn't sync how can

  • HT1386 I have just purchased my first books from Itunes.  They are now in I tunes but when I try sync to the I touch, I do not see the audio books coming over.  I Tunes is set up for all audio books to sync

I tunes Audio book does not show up in I tunes ibook when sync.  What should i do

You are only as young as you feel......
This is an example of how you can select the exact content that you want to sync to your device. You do not have to sync the entire iTunes library. You can pick and choose the music, apps, books and so on that you want to sync. This is using music as an example.
Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Music Tab on the right.
Click on only the albums or playlists that you want to sync.
Click on the Sync Music Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
You can do this with apps, books, movies .... Whatever .... You have the freedom to sync whatever you want.

  • Just purchased a new IPAD 2 Retina, first MAC computer and have an old IPOD Touch.  Trying to sync all the accounts (2 different accounts) to one account.

I have 2 accounts in Itunes.  My old one and new one.  I just purchased my first MAC book pro and my 2nd Ipad (Retina).  I have an old IPOD Touch and have different stuff on each device.  I am trying to sync without having to ERASE and REPLACE to sync.  Any ideas?

If you were syncing your iPod touch to the old computer, use Migration Assistant to get all your user data to the new computer.
Then it will sync fine (since you will be using the same library).
