I just reset the SMU on an ISIGHT G5 and a beep was emitted

I followed the instructions here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
Is that normal to get a "tone" or a beep while holding down the power button in the process of resetting the SMU?
I'm only asking, becasue I thought that a single beep was a RAM Issue, and no where does it say on the Apple document for SMU resetting, that there supposed to be a BEEP.
Anyone?

hey...how goes it?
I reset the SMU becasue I was tiold it might help with some noise issues. I don't necessary have any blaring fan issues, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to reset it for other noise that I am having with my imac.
Anyway, it didn't. But, the tone or beep I was describing was a solid "BLOOP" or "BOOOP." Very abrupt and forceful, to say the least. If that helps to describe the sound. It was nothing like the usual start up sound.
Anyhoo...
I think I'll take it in soon for a check up.
thanks again

  • Resetting the SMU. Silly machine.

I have a problem on startup, where by the power light comes on, but sticks with a black screen and no startup noise.
After following the troubleshooting guides on the site, I attempted to reset my SMU to see if that would help.
With the back panel off, LED1 came on, followed by LED2 once I pushed the button which of the two is nearest the top of the screen. Now - when pushing the other button (to reset the SMU), the guide said it should reset the computer. However, the button merely powered the computer down...I have no idea if the SMU reset actually happened or not. Is there any way to tell? Powering up the iMac again results in the same problem.
I'm out of warranty and don't have AppleCare. The service provider in my town charges £45 just to see the machine, then £90 an hour labour + parts if any are required. I'm a student! Need to try everything I can before resorting to forking out for the repair. Got food to buy and stuff...
    Anyone got any suggestions? Please..?!

As you have one of the "first generation" iMac G5's you are a candidate for the free "repair extension program", Adam. It sounds like a classic case of this problem - see http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/ and check your serial number.

  • Resetting the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)

    Guys,
I was just reading the "How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004/2005)" page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 and am now a little confused.
I own a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), and every night before bed I turn it off and take the power plug out of the wall. In the instructions to resetting the SMU on a Power Mac G5, it states to remove the power cord from the computer for 15 seconds and then plug it back in.
By me always taking the power away from the computer, is this resetting the SMU every time? If so, can this cause problems?
    Regards,
    Daniel

Presuming that you are referring to the 'relay click' sound when the G5 is first connected to mains power -
I have not seen an Apple Official mention of this initial relay sound, let alone an explanation of what the initial relay does; but, over the course of two years in the G5 Usage forum, the absence of it is invariably bad news for the Power Supply Unit(PSU)(or other major bits). So - yes, it is supposed to happen.
If you have no economic or environmental objections, and you can arrange for the G5 to remain plugged-in and the mains turned on, that should alleviate premature internal battery drain.
Personally... I leave it plugged-in because the G5 is on a UPS, and also it would mean foraging in the jungle of wiring under the desk...
BTW If you don't already - as the G5 is not on 24/7 the OS X maintenance scripts will not run; you may wish to consider running 'sudo periodic' from Utilities - Terminal occasionally - as explained in the thoughts of Dr. Smoke here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
    Trust this helps.

  • Resetting the SMU on first gen iMac

Okay so I've been having some apparent overheating problems with my iMac G5 and in a previous post I was told to reset the SMU. Since I have a first gen iMac I know that there is a button to push somewhere inside my comp. Does anyone know where it is? All I can find directions for are the newer iMac models.

hi, i just bought an ipad.my problems is the privious owner dont reset the apple id.i just reset the ipad.now i cant active the ipad with my apple id.what can i do?

You will have to contact the previous owner and ask him/her to remove the iPad from their account, he/she is the only person that can do it : Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - you won't be able to use the iPad until they do so.

  • I reset the smu, cooling fan stays on continuously,

Is the cooling fan supposed to stay on all the time?  I've had my IMac since late 2009 and the fan never came on until I reset the SMU yesterday, now it stays on.  I looked at the activity monitor and all is quiet.  Should I reset the SMU again?  Thanks for your time.

    Reset the SMC again.

  • Resetting the SMU

    Greetings,
I wanted to reset the SMU. I followed the instructions on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
But I didn't know when to go to the fifth step! As I hold the power button the computer gave a peep. Then the white light in the front kept flashing. Finally the computer gave me a screen saying this:
    Apple PowerMac 12, 1 5.2.6f1 bootROM built on 10/05/05 at 18:02:54

I let go the power button. And the keyboard didn't respond to type anything (I plugged back the mouse and keyboard). I waited more than five minutes, while the fans ran too fast. I pushed the power button and shut down the computer.
    What went wrong?
    Thanks,
    Master96

You booted into Open Firmware by mistake:

    +* What is this screen?+
+* How did I get to this screen?+
+* How can I get back to the regular Mac OS?+
+This screen is the Open Firmware screen. Beginning with Power Macintosh computers equipped with PCI slots, Apple has used a firmware operating system called Open Firmware for controlling hardware.+
+Open Firmware is a cross-platform firmware standard for controlling hardware and is used by all PCI-based Mac OS computers. Open Firmware is used mainly by Apple hardware developers and rarely is there a need to start up into Open Firmware.+
+While it is difficult to start up into Open Firmware, it does happen if you hold down the Option-Command-O-F keys when the computer starts up after having been shut down. The PowerBook should never start up into Open Firmware on its own.+
+If you are at the Open Firmware screen and want to go back into Mac OS, type "BYE" without the quotes at the command prompt, then press the Return key. This exits Open Firmware and continues starting up into Mac OS.+
I assume the computer is working now, but why it went into open firmware I don't know.Probably, you held the start button down too long. In any case, you have probably reset the SMU and hopefully fixed your problem,

I have just reset my password about a hundred times and still the face time and I messenger is not working, I previously used FaceTime once and now I need help urgently
    What am I not doing?

Hi fatbear711.  are the following as follows?  Settings/restrictions:  Facetime and Camera are both ON?   Also in Game centre at bottom 'Adding Friends" is turned on?  If all ok, log into your account via itunes App, Click on your ID at bottom left of say the Music page, then click to 'Manage', enter password.  On next page click on your apple ID at top, then select to go to '[email protected]'. Log in on the browser window page that appears and confirm that your primary apple ID and primary email have been verified (should have green ticks and the word 'verified' next to them.  If you use itunes on a pc to sync with then do this through iTunes;Store menu on your pc, ensuring that you sync your device once finshed.  You will also need to check that your device is set to the correct timezone and time in your devices settings page.  If problem still persists at least we'll know the basics are ok.
When you post again can you also include whether ipad2/3 etc and iOS e.g. 5.3.1/6.01 etc
    Best regards

while updating my ipad to new software through itunes it got stuck and does not work anymore - it just displays the screen with symbols of itunes and the cable to connect to it - help - what should i do?

Disconnect the iPad, do a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!, reconnect and follow the prompts.
If that does not work then see here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

I have just updated the i06 software for my iPad and it will not connect to my home wifi network - all my other devices are able to connect to my wifi network.
I have attempted all troubleshooting actions suggested and nothing has worked. I have restored my iPad network and factory settings - Please help - this is frustrating me

you have to set up your router to solve th problem. first find and write down the ipad mac address.
then log on to your router using your laptop or any device that can connect to router at 192.168.0.1 in your web browser. please check out my posting about how to resolve the wifi connection problem.
i think the ios6 update has reset the networking but if you set up the router then you should not have the same problem any more.

  • My iphone 4s is no longer detecting wifi since the ISO8 updates came out. I've restarted, rest the networks, reset the phone back to factory settings, and even tried the freezer trick. It is STILL not detecting ANY wifi networks. HELP!!!

My iphone 4s is no longer detecting wifi since the IOS8 updates came out. I've restarted, rest the networks, reset the phone back to factory settings, and even tried the freezer trick. It is STILL not detecting ANY wifi networks. HELP!!! I cannot afford to go over my data and I use wifi at home and work... I believe the updates have caused the issue, because it was working fine before the second update released (I hadn't put the first one one until I noticed it had stopped working, and by then the second IOS8 version had came out). They need to do a third update to fix this issue.

    If it's grayed out:
Reset Network Settings - if that doesn't fix it, then Backup and Restore AS A NEW DEVICE.
If it's still grayed out, unfortunately that means your Wi-Fi antenna quit, and it needs service.
