- If you have iOS 5 and later you can turn on Assistive Touch it add the Home and other buttons to the iPods screen. Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch

In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware, which is iOS 6.1.6 for a fourth generation iPod touch.

For the past 2-3 months everytime I connect my iPhone or iPod touch to my laptop to update the software through itunes I have issues. I have tried download and install option and the download only option. When the progress bar gets to 100 % downloading and switches to start to install I get an error message that says something like connection issue/timed out/network something. My internet is working so what am I doing wrong when I didn't used to have this problem?
I've been getting timed out for 2 days now, what finally worked for me was not plugging the phone into the computer and just doing the update through my wifi, worked perfectly, took less than 15 minutes

Thanks for your prompt response, however I have first seen it now. I have placed an active SIM card in the iPhone turned it off and on. It now says SIM locked, please write access code. The problem is I don't remember the password. When I connect it to iTunes it tell me that I have to write the password before it can be used with iTunes...... Do you have any good ideas? I don't think I ever registered my 3rd gen iPod. I was never able to update it past its original software because iTunes could never recognize it. Unfortunately, my wife had installed data on it (old & recently purchased) so I've been very hesitant to "Restore" it. I recently plugged it into my laptop & it prompted me to install the iOS 5.0.1 software, but after multiple attempts to do so iTunes keeps giving me the same error message "update install failed. Connection to the update software server has timed out". How do I update the software without losing all my wife's data?
If you already have iOS5.0, Go to settings-general-software update, scroll to the bottom and hit download and install and this should update it without the computer. Then when you connect the iPod to iTunes, it should say 5.0.1. If this doesn't work, DON'T ERASE IT. Just bring it in to Apple. I had the same issue trying to update to 5.0. and eventually I got it to work after waiting for a little while. Good luck!

The computer I am referring to is a Windows. However, when I use the same USB cord and plug it into a MacBook Pro, the ipod is recognized and the ipod recognizes the computer. Also, it gets charge from the Wall outlet as well.

Thank you.There is no other way to obtain the iOS 3.1 update, but it is available in the Irish iTunes Store; I'm looking at it right now (it's 3,99 Euros), and accessed it from the page I referenced above (both from a Mac and from Windows using both IE and Firefox). If it's coming up and saying that you need iTunes, something's amiss with how iTunes is installed on your system, or with your web browser; you might try a different browser.

Netflix iPod Touch 1 st Gen Can't Download The App!!!!!
I bought 2 iPod Touch 1 st Generation products back in November of 2011 for chirstmas presents. I downloaded Netflix to these devices and it worked great! Then on christmas morning kids opened the devices and started using them and the devices said netflix required an update! After the update the netflix app stoped working and when I deleted it and tried to redownload it no dice! The app now says requires ios 4.0!

Not going to happen, not for a device that Apple discontinued well over three years ago. It's probable that the hardware in the first-gen iPod touch can't support the newer OS, though I can't say with any certainty. The chances of Apple providing such a version, though, even if the hardware could, is nil.
