I just updated my 15" macbook pro from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and it's saying Photo booth needs to be updated to be used. Since it comes with the machine I'm assuming I need to buy Mountain Lion or something? Help??

Many apps I would like to download were out of reach because they needed the latest software download to work. I was extrememly excited to hear that the newest update was completely free and knew that it would help some of my problems. I was told that Mavericks could be installed straight from Snow Leopard, but I'm guessing a few updates have been missed on the way? How am I supposed to update my apps like Photo Booth when I am a student with low income and can't afford to buy things like Mountain Lion?
Is there anyway to update my apps without downsizing my software???

First, I see from the screenshot that you have applications on your desktop - how did they wind up there? Any app should be installed in the Applications folder since that is where Software Update expects them to be when it searches for updates. So you might want to move your apps there. Do that, restart, and run Software Update again. If that does not update your very old version of Photo Booth, then I have only one suggestion: use recovery (hold down Command + R keys while restarting or rebooting) to re-download and install Mavericks again over the top of what you have.

  • If I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web and now wish to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings to sell.  How do I accomplish this?

I upgraded the operating system on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web.  Now I need to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings, so that I can pass it on.  How do I accomplish this?  When I insert the Mac OS X install disk, the only option is to erase the free space.  Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thank you

You need to boot off the original Snow Leopard DVD's that came with the system.
Once you are running off of the DVD you will be able to do a clean install of SL
To boot off the DVD with the system up running Lion insert the DVD. Open Sytem Preferences->Startup Disk and select the DVD then restart the machine.

    Hi spiritentrep,
What Adobe software are you referring to? Are you using Acrobat? You should have no problems running Acrobat XI on Yosemite, and as along as you have compatible scanner drivers for your Epson, you should be fine there as well.

If you have not previously purchased Mavericks from the Mac app store, then no. It is no longer available. Yosemite has the same system requirements as Mavericks and is a free upgrade from the app store.

  • Can I upgrade my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard straight to Mountain Lion, or would it be wise to get Lion as well?

I am currently in the process of upgrading the operating system on my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1). I have purchased and installed Snow Leopard successfully, however I would like to upgrade to the latest operating system, which to date is Moutain Lion.
Am I able to do this?
Is it wise to perform such an upgrade on this model of MacBook Pro (can it handle it)?
I have heard that I can upgrade straight from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this? Will I lose anything at all by not installing Lion before Mountain Lion?
Thanks for the help everyone. Hopefully I can get these questions answered soon.

And the only way to figure that out would be verifying my disk using the Disk Utility?
Thank you for that. If I am not missing out on anything by skipping Lion then that will be my option. A few extra dollars in my pocket is always a good thing.

  • If I upgrade my macbook pro from snow leopard 10.6.8 to mountain lion, will I lose any current software, files, or need to reinstall or reset anything?

I want to be sure that I won't lose things like microsoft office (I need excel for work) or my word files. Will I lose anything by upgrading to mountain lion? will I need to reinstall things or spend a lot of time restoring and resetting to get things set up as I have them now?

Probably not. Back up your computer first, and ensure that your applications are compatible wih Mac OS X 10.8; Microsoft Office 2004 and earlier aren't.

  • Updated MBP from snow leopard to mavericks and now can't log into website I subscribe too.  Can log in on other computers, just not using Mavericks.  Tried safari, firefox and chrome.  Tried clearing cache/cookies/history etc.  Any suggestions?

Have utilised the website's Help services with no answer.  They report it's fully supported by Mac system.  Have tried turning firewall off.  Nothing.  Assuming it's a privacy/security setting given no success in 3 browsers???  Help?

Try making a test user account in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Then log out of your usual user account and try the test user account, and see if the website  will let you in.
I suspect that the problem is an internet plugin that is not compatible with Mavericks. The old internet plugin will not be in the test user account.
If the site lets you in with the test user account, then it's a process of trial and error to figure out which plugin is the culprit.
The internet plugins are found in a few places.
    Most are in /Library/Internet Plugins
Some may be in ~/Library/Internet Plugins
    ~/Library is hidden by default.

  • I went from snow leopard to mavericks and skipped the whole mountain lion stage. Should I have airplay? If so, where is it so I can connect to my apple tv, it is not in my display options like my friend who went from mountain lion to mavericks.

Do you need Mountain Lion if you have Mavericks to have Airplay to connect your computer to your apple tv?

    A supported Mac
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of recent Macs to deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models support AirPlay Mirroring when using OS X Mountain Lion or later:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)
From here >   About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X
AirPlay is not just about Mavericks. It depends on which Mac you have as noted above.

  • I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and can no longer share files, does anyone have suggestions?

I had to set up an appointment with the local genius bar to install Mavericks as I use WiFi and am very close to mountains which tend to interfere with clean downloads.  I am now unable to send work product via email as a PDF - I'm hoping someone has suggestions for me - or should I just make another appointment?   My thanks, Bobbie4886

There could be many ways to be "unable to send work product via email as a PDF."
Can you no longer create PDFs from your work product?
Can you no longer find the PDFs when you try to attach them to an email?
Do you get an error message when you try to attach them?
Do you get an error message when you try to send the email?
Does the email with the attachment disappear without a trace?
Does your recipient not see the attachment?
Does your recipient get an error message trying to open the attachment?
    Something else? What?

  • MacBook Pro reset/Snow Leopard Install

    Hi,
I'm updating an old MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard... well trying.
I have the install disc from Apple (brand new), but when I try to install I get about two thirds of the way though and get an error message. The machine is definitely up to spec, but the laptop is old. I just feel that if I could wipe the hard-drive and start again it would be ok. Is this possible?
Everything is backed up, so I just need some instruction on how to get the MacBook back to some kind of 'default' setting.
    Thanks!

Booted from the DVD, select Utilities/Disk Utility - run repair disk and repair permissions until you get no errors. Select the partition tab, select the partition, hit Options/GUID, and reformat Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then tried the OS installation again.

I have a macbook pro running snow leopard. Just recently I cannot view youtube videos and other online videos. I recently updated my flashplayer plugin and I believe that is the problem. Is the latest flashplayer plugin compatible with 10.6.8? If this is so, I need to find an older flash player plugin to reinstall. I do not want to upgrade from 10.6.8 at this time because I have 18 yrs. worth of financial records on Quicken that I have read will not work with Lion and I've read bad things about running music programs on Maverick.

    1)  Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) is a full featured app that can be downloaded from Intuit for $15 and will work with your data file if you are using Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 (if you version is earlier, let me know for more instructions on easy conversion):
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
    2) Partition your hard drive, or add an external hard drive and install Mavericks there and "dual-boot" to operate your music programs in Snow Leopard and experiment with them in Mavericks.
DO NOT install Mavericks over Snow Leopard!

  • I have a MacBook pro on snow leopard - do I need to get lion prior to changing to iCloud ?

I have a MacBook pro on snow leopard - do I need to get lion prior to changing to iCloud ?

You can migrate to iCloud whilst still using snow leopard, but you will not be able to sync your calendars and contacts on your Mac.
If you are asking whether you should get Lion before or after migrating to iCloud, it really doesn't matter, but I think I would prefer to get it before migrating to iCloud .

The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
