I just upgraded to the new Photo and find a few things missing. May find more later. My Events are gone. Also, the Albums and Projects that I created that were on the left side tab of iPhoto are now gone. Where are they?

Where are my Events from the old iPhoto? Also, where are the albums and projects I created that were on the left side tab in my old iPhoto?

Hersco wrote:
After importing my iPhoto Library no Events became Albums. Some of my Albums are still Albums, but many are missing from the Albums tab and Sidebar. One of the Albums listed has no photos when it should have 142. Another is missing nearly all of its photos. I found some missing Albums by name via the search window. Yet they remain missing from the Albums tab. Very strange indeed. This is one big mess right now! Thank goodness iPhoto still works.
Yes, it's a mess for sure, and I've lost confidence in it for now.  First attempt, 5 photos came up missing.  Delete and start over, then after second attempt 18 photos go missing.  Even one single missing photo is a real confidence breaker for me.
After conversion, and activation of the sidebar, all of my Events were migrated into a single "Photos" Album called "iPhoto Events".  Why would I want "legacy" Events segregated into one big Album?  What the heck am I supposed to do with that?  That's useless if new photos are going to be organized in some other way moving forward.  I cannot imagine new photos automatically putting themselves into a new Event inside of the "iPhoto Events" Album... because they won't.  I'll be stuck with my old iPhoto Events in this one Album, and the new stuff organized as per Photos.  Weird, just weird.
Also, in the "all photos" view, there are dates that are just blank.  I think I know why.  In iPhoto, I merged various photos into single Events.  For whatever reason, within the Library, this left empty folders behind.  iPhoto's fault, not mine... I simply dragged & dropped photos to combine Events.   Then during Photos import/conversion these empty folders got converted into "blank" days within Photos... this is simply ridiculous.  When programming for an import, you'd want to ignore a folder if there are no files inside of it, not convert it into a block of photos that contain no photos.  It's nonsensical... you cannot have an iPhoto Event with zero photos, yet that's what was converted over.  LOL.
I'm certainly not going to invest the time into cleaning up and moving hundreds of Events and 18,000 photos if Photos can't even do a simple library conversion.  Heck, what about the dozens of photos that my iPhone 5S fails to geotag for whatever reason?  Can't edit geotags.  Can't bulk edit meta data.  These are pretty basic functions.  Total fail.
I'm going back to iPhoto for a while, hoping Apple eventually cleans up this mess into something usable.

  • Bought the new 15" i5 2.53, few things of note for interested parties

I've just been reading a lot of concerned posts on here lately, and wanted to drop my line in the pond on what I've noticed on this new MBP, coming from the late 2007 2.2ghz c2d 4gb mem non-unibody version I had before.
    1) This thing cools down FAST. I mean seriously fast. I play WoW on these machines, and generally get the settings up as high as they'll reasonably go, and as a result, the system heats up quite a bit, but the fans kick in very quickly, and their sound is pretty noticeable. The chips will hit 70 degrees celsius while playing, but as soon as the app is off, you're back down to the low 50s in almost less than a minute.
    2) Noting the above, the baseline noise of this new machine is about the same as what my 2.5 year old machine is. Bear in mind that the 07 machine likely had worn bearings after 2 or so years, and as a result was louder by general wear and tear.
    3) In general, and even more moderate usage, the speed differences between this machine and that other machine are not very noticeable. I'm a web designer, and bounce between Photoshop, Dreamweaver and several open web browsers during any given session. In this type of usage, I don't notice much difference. But when I turn on VMWare to test in Windows, it's like night and day. This machine does heavy multitasking very, very well, but even moderate usage doesn't really push it.
    4) The DVI port is non-standard. It's not even mini-DVI. This was a bit of a let-down, but the adapter is only $20, so it wasn't a deal breaker. But the older model I had had a standard DVI out. That was a nice feature.
    5) The airport wifi seems more stable and faster to connect. It would take my old computer upwards of 10 or 15 seconds just to connect to wifi, but this machine is connected in 3 seconds or less.
    6) It doesn't get hot *at all* when the nVidia card isn't on. But when it is, it probably shouldn't be in your lap. My old computer would turn into a hotplate when I was just on a website with a lot of javascript.
    7) No BluRay option? I'm pretty disappointed with this. Not that there is any current need in software for a blu-ray disc, but with what essentially amounts to a 1050p display and optical out, it would've been severely awesome to have that option at least available, especially on a professional level machine at least by now.
If you're looking at these new models and are wondering what the step up would be like, feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer.

Most of the negative talk about the new MBP 15" is from people who bought their MBP 2 months ago and are jealous. Seriously. The new model, aside from the screen which I'm not in love with, is the best laptop I've ever known... and I've owned at least a dozen Powerbook models and one MacBook through the years. I especially love the keyboard. It feels like a normal desktop keyboard rather than the typical mushy laptop kind.
15" vs 17" really depends on whether you need a notebook or just want a portable computer. 15" if you commute with your notebook, travel with it etc. 17" if you just want to be able to move it from room A to room B in your house, maybe take it to the office now and then. 17" is not a good machine to travel with however.

  • The new photos app doesn't show all of the thumbnails for my Photostream photos, how can I make them show?

I recently updated my mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15 inch to 10.10.3 Yosemite and I am now using the new Photos app. My Photostream shows missing thumbnails for more of the recent photos, I let it sit for an hour and they still don't show. Any tips to make the thumbnails show quickly? I have tried disabling photostream and reactivating it which didn't work. The thumbnails do eventually show only if I view each specific photo, but it would take forever to select each one to make the thumbnail show

    Hi,
Thanks for that  tip and I got as far as that as well with Apple Support but for me the subsequent syncing doesn't work.
I have just returned from another visit at the Apple Store where their top level Genius (if such a thing exists) wanted to see it for himself. Rather worryingly, neither he nor Apple head office has an answer for why this isn't working.
To summarise,  I connect my iPhone 6 (all up to date) with my MBA/iTunes via USB cable. The sync tab under the iPhone allows me to sync my photos via USB and I get a dropdown menu to chose from iPhoto or Photos Sync. Both libraries in same location but iPhoto works, but Photos says there are 0 pictures and won't sync...
The Apple genius was going to try it himself tonight at home. He has my number and has promised to phone. In the meantime my question remains. For those of you who do not use the Cloud for storing pictures could you please confirm the sync is working for you as described above. Thanks

Why can't I add a location to a photo in the new Photos app?  Apple appears to have taken away a feature without asking.

I have an iPhone and occasionally use it for photos, but my main camera is NOT an iPhone.  To be forced to go outside Apple for a product when Apple had perfectly good products available is ludicrous.  But it is what it is, apparently.

I just upgraded to a new imac running OS X 10.8.2 and am having trouble scanning from my Brother MHC 7820N.  Printer works fine but the scanner won't connect to the imac.  I reinstalled the scanner driver from Brother.com but no luck.  When I go to Image Capture, it says no scanner connected.  Any suggestions?

You might try a third party scanner software. Printer manufacturers are terrible about keeping their products updated. I'd recommend VueScan, you can get a trial version here and if it works and you like it you can purchase it.

I just upgraded to a new MacBook and my wife is inheriting my old MacBook Air. How can I change the her MacBook Air to now be fundamentally hers? That is, so the House Icon under Users folder is her name and not mine? Also the default AppleID for purchase stubbernly remains my own.

You do not mention it, but I will assume you are running OS 10.9.1.
Go to: Apple menu / System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click the padlock and enter your password.
Click the + (plus sign) and set up a new account for your wife. You have to enter a bunch of info. And then create the correct Login Options. Automatic login does not require a password from the selected user.
When that is done, verify the account works by restarting the computer and login as your wife.
Make sure that any applications in your own Users folder that will be needed are moved to the Applications folder in your wife's Users folder.
Now go back to Users and Groups, click the padlock and authenticate, select your own account, and hit the - (minus sign). This step cannot be reversed, so you might want to wait a few days before doing it.
When your wife is logged in, the App Store will know.

  • I just updated to IOS 10.10.3 and the new photos app.  How do you hide photos so they don't show anywhere?

I just updated to IOS 10.10.3 and the new photos app.  How do you hide photos and videos so they only show in the hidden album.  Thanks

When publishing from Lightroom to Facebook, you are always sending them to an album. Lightroom doesn't generate you posts though. Generally Facebook is smart enough to create just one post for all of your images published to a single album. If you are getting individual posts per photo there isn't anything you can do from Lightroom's side to change that. Try refreshing you page your newsfeed or timeline to verify whether individual posts are being created or if it's just a timing issue.
Also, uploading images to Facebook will always result in your file having a different file name on the server and in the page code. No avoiding this, no matter your method of upload.

  • Just did a Mac update yesterday for Yosemite and I can not open a picture in elements with out it crashing.  Spent over 4 hours with Mac and it came down to an Adobe Issue with the New Photo which is replacing the I photo. Elements does not recognize it,

Does anyone know a direct number for adobe that will not cost you to just ask about their program which will not work with a new mac update!

You can do that in iPhoto, too. Just go to the iphoto prefs>advanced, and set PSE as your external editor. Note that the actual editor is not the file at the top level of Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements < version number >, but rather hidden away inside the Support Files folder:
Then you just right the click the photo in iphoto and choose edit with external editor.
If you have the new Photos app, you can't drag and drop, either.

I do not see my shared albums on the new Photos app for iMacs.  Where can you find them as my shared tab just says start sharing but doesn't display the previous shared albums I create on the the old iPhoto app.

Did you reboot the router too?

  • Downloaded yosemite and my iPhotos pics now appear as a grey square and triangle with an ! in it with in the new photos program

I have a mac book pro and i just downloaded yosemite. after i downloaded yosemite i went to the new photos program as he iPhoto icon was no longer there and i followed the instructions. i then opened my pics and they all seemed to be there but when i enlarge them or double click on them all i see is a grey screen with a grey square with a grey triangle with an exclamation point in it. so in reality the pics aren't really there! maybe they are somewhere else but i do not know.
just so you know: before i downloaded yosemite i did all the upgrades my computer said i needed to do, no iPhoto upgrade was listed. i didn't do any specific backup before downloaded yosemite but i do have a time machine connected to the computer so i do believe that i therefore have a backup. i am not exactly sure what version iPhoto i had but perhaps my iPhoto and the new photos program are not compatible. i say that because when i went into applications and clicked on iPhoto (as it was listed there) it said "in order to open "iPhoto" you need to update to the latest version. the version of iPhoto installed on this mac is not compatible with os x yosemite. download the latest version for free from the mac app store." so i searched the app store and it says that version is not available. the app store does list iPhoto in my purchased products but it only says update and not download. i clicked on update it doesn't appear to do anything but do a spinning circle for a few seconds and then nothing further. i don't know what to do next! what happened and how do i go about fixing this problem?

The exclamation mark means that the app has lost the link to the actual file.
First step: try and make sure the iPhoto Library is working correctly:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I just upgraded to the new photo upgrade and I can't edit in Photoshop anymore!!! Help????
External Photo Editors are not supported in Photos. You can export any photo to the Desktop and then pass them the Photoshop for editing and reimport them.
The problem is, that Photos is a completely new designed photo application, designed for Yosemite and the MacOS X versions to come. Many differences are under the hood. It uses the new system libraries and frameworks for more efficient image processing on the new powerful macs, like the mac pro, it is extensible by app extensions, if other developers will add functionality, and most important, it brings integration with iCloud Photo Library.   Photoshop and other external editors have not yet been upgraded to support this.  I hope, the updates will come soon.
Some features are still missing however, and you can continue to use iPhoto, if you like. Or create a small Photos library for testing and explore Photos, while keeping your main libraries in iPhoto.

Just downloaded the new Photos software.  Now photos do not appear on the iWeb photos tab to drag into web page.  Is there a way to remedy that?

It's not gone - just a version too old to run on 10.10.3.  However, read the following:
