I keep getting Kernel Panic when I try to install Panther

Hello!
I bought a used iMac from eBay. It's a 500mhz Indigo model with CDRW. It has Jaguar and OS9 installed on it and I want to install Panther. When I try to do the install the computer reboots and I get the Kernel Panic. I just want to wipe out whatever is there and start fresh with Panther but the Kernel keeps getting Panicky. Can anyone help?
BTW I'm not installing Tiger because I don't have it yet.
Thanks!
iMac G3 500mhz Indigo CDRW model   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Hi Again KeepItSimple!
As I asked in your Other Topic, does the Full Retail Version of Panther, have CDs that look like THESE?
It isn't necessary to start a new topic for the same issue. It's preferable to keep all the information in the same thread. Then users attempting to assist you have all the pertinent data in one place.

  • HT5225 "This disc does not use the GUID Partition Table Scheme...". I keep getting this message when I try to install OSXLion. It has something to do with a repair Apple performed last year. I use a 17" MacBookPro. Any suggestions?

"This disc does not use the GUID Partition Table Scheme. Use Disc Utility to change the partition scheme". I keep getting this message when I try to install OSX Lion so that I can upgrade my 17" MacBookPro to move to iCloud. My harddrive was replaced last year by Apple because of a fault by the manufacturer and I think this is the cause of the problem. What can I do so that I don't lose my content.

When you click the partion tab. There is option on the bottom of the window. Click on that there there are these options.

  • Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?

I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
    Thanks.

    KeepItSimple:
If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
    Good luck!

  • Keep getting KERNEL PANICS when I plug in my external hard drives!  HELP!

Kernel panics started happening this week.  Figured out that it was caused by my external hard drives.  I have four external G-DRIVES (three 2TB, one 4TB) and one LACIE 2TB BIG DISK.  The 4TB G-DRIVE is my TIME MACHINE drive.
Did some trouble shooting and nomatter which external is plugged in, the OS panics after about 5mins.  Been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do.
Anyone run into this before?  Thanks,

  • I keep getting a failure when I try to install new ilife 11 in my imac??

I installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard successfully I believe, and iWork also. Included with the box set was iLife 11 whic I really want to use and I cannot get it to load. It fails when installing every time. I have iLife 09 already loaded on there from before, and I just want to update. I made sure all system requirements are met or exceeded and I have no issues there so I am thinking maybe it is the disc or something went wrong with the snow leopard update, but iWork installed with no problems at all.

Hi - have a look at this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2696288?start=0&tstart=132 and look at Sandra Hall's post about deleting a Java folder. Looks like she had the same problem as you and managed to fix it.

    hiya!
under normal circumstances, an uninstall or an upgrade (which uninstalls the previous version of itunes) doesn't touch your library or music files.
but as insurance against disasters, it's a good idea to have backups. these Buegie posts are good resources on starting and maintaining backups:

I have a corrupted bookmark file and want to totally delete any information on the bookmarks and settings. Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

OK, this worked for me:( Original Post by r0tt3n4pp13)
    1. Save iTunes install file to your desktop.
    2. Disconnect from internet.
    3. Disable Firewall/Security software.
    4. Run install. Note that it installs Application Support and a bunch of other software this time.
    5. Run iTunes.
    6. Enable Firewall/Security software.
    7. Reconnect to internet.
    8. Download Watchmen Director's Cut post haste.
    OR!
    (Original post by Cr4z33)
    1. Download and install WinRAR.
    2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose "Open with WinRAR".
    3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose "Repair".
    4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally.

I keep getting error 1603 when I try to restore my iPod why?

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1603
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. Also, discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. If the issue remains, Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
