I keep getting Norton 'performance alerts' that Firefox is using a lot of memory. Should I worry?

Is there some action I should take because of thes alaerts? It happens every time I start Firefox

    Windows puts up messages that this is too much - also it crashes, gets stuck and moves like a very slow turtle
    I am trying to remove the McAfee toolbar, having uninstalled McAfee, the toolbar remains - I suspect it is intruding space and time wise as I have AVG already

  • I keep getting a pop up saying Firefox is using far too much memory

    If I try to download a video or film something that would have taken 30 minutes is now taking 10-12 hours.
    My download speed is showing 4.79 MB/sec but it´s certainly not doing that.

    This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.

    Do a clean (re-)install:
    Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

    I'm trying firefox 7 beta in a debian squeeze box. It is using a lot of RAM and CPU compared to previous releases of firefox(I've tried disabling all plugins and add-ons, not a big improvement).     What has me curious is whether this is a new resource problem or whether it was present in 6.0 and you are just not noticing it.
    One suggestion: Don't run BETA versions of ANY software on "all your machines". Not when rolling back the version is not an option. That's generally a bad idea, since beta versions are likely to have bugs.
    With FF, now, I would never let it automatically update. I don't trust their new update policies, so I would suggest you turn "auto updates" to OFF, and do it manually, only after you hear the new release is stable, which we know 6.0 is NOT.

  • I'm getting AVG messages stating that Firefox is using 350MGB of memory.

    I'm getting these messages once or twice a day and they suggest that I restart Firefox.

    If those messages return, see AVG support to find out how to raise the threshold of the trigger for that message. With 6GB of RAM, there's no reason for Firefox using less than 10% of your RAM to be a problem and cause that message to appear. IMO, the alarm shouldn't trigger until the 50% range.

    This message is displayed if your iOS device has been trying to complete a restore for more than three days. This can occur if your restore has been interrupted due to network connectivity issues or some other problem occurs.

    Are you trying to install the 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine, or vice versa?
    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
    The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
