I keep losing files on my XServe

I am having an issue with my application files that are stored on my G5 Xserve and hopefully someone has an answer. Currently on of our users will create a new application file, such as PDF, and place it in a folder that was created on our server. Then another users will move that file to a different folder labeled "In Process" on the server and make edits to that file. Once the edits have been made then that same file will be moved to a folder labeled "Ready for Proofreading". Problem is that when moving the file from the In Process folder to the Ready for Proofreading folder the file will just simply disappear, no error message or nothing it will just act like it as been deleted.
Our process is set up so our designers work directly off of the server and not drag anything to their desktop to work on. Management has their reasons.
Would appreciate any insight on this.
Thank you

When exporting mutliple files to web pages Aperture keeping losing files, so for instance, if I choose to export 600 images to a new web page, it might make 524 pages but not the full 600. I've tried resetting Aperture and its persmission and am using the latest version of 3.
I have 3600 images which I need to upload as sublfolders, each with their own URL and at the moment Aperture is dropping of anything from 1 to 90 images.
This is critical as people need to see each and every on of these images online. So if a file has 600 photos in it, Aperture should make a URL with 600 full image pages. And this is what it's not doing. On small files, say 30 or so it seems to work well, it's when it gets to more than that the problem starts.
I've used Aperture in the past under previous versions and not had this problem.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Hi Jack,
Thanks for responding (as it seems as though no one else has been able to provide any insight as of yet)! Not sure if you saw my recent post, but the version of Aperture on the 2008 MacBook has been upgraded to 3.1.2 (not sure how; I bought it in 2009, but only have OS X 10.5.8... which apparently can't house 3.1.2 of Aperture, but hey, like many other anomalies i'm encountering, I'm no longer surprised!). I am unable to upgrade it any further, as it warns me that my OS X does not fit the requirements. I exported the projects as libraries; however, like I posted before, apparently these are from too old of a version for the new Aperture (3.3.1) to handle and import.
It's getting to the point where I'd almost pay to upgrade the OS X on my previous MacBook (10.5.8) to something newer in order to THEN update Aperture to a newer version; however, my previous MacBook simply cannot handle this (the specs are awful -- hence my decision to save up and upgrade to the newest MBP with Retina).
I've spent hours upon hours transferring files, libraries as projects, previews, versions, even masters (though, apparently some of them aren't accessible?) with no luck. I've rebuilt the library and reprocessed everything. And this is all after having to return one MBP already since Aperture 3.3.1 is glitch-y as it is, and froze everything for having a "managed library". So, now that I know that I have to deal with a referenced library in Aperture... I just need to actually transfer my previous library to my new one (hopefully WITH adjustments since these are years worth of photos and work).
Again, any help is appreciated. I've lost enough sleep, time, and vision health over this at this point.
Also, I know Migration Assistant is an option, I was told that it wouldn't work properly anyway because of the different operating systems, and the potential for problems.

• Keeps losing files

This has been my worst experience with an upgrade. I like all the features of iWeb '08 but am having a terrible experience just trying to get basic files posted and saved. After I exit and re-enter iWeb files have disappeared. Each time I have to select the domain in my application support. I'm working with a new 2.16 Duo core iMac.
iMovie is definately a disappointment and step down. It should be called a downgrade instead of upgrade.

Try to "Save as" your project, and "collect" audio and video files, (which is an option when the save as box appears) to a new folder. It will duplicate everything, so make sure you have the disk space.

Why do I keep losing audio/recorded tracks and SFX in my projects? I have tried: Saving as archive file/searching package contents etc. to no avail. Can anyone help? It keeps telling me 'Audio file not found', and seems to be different tracks in the same project each time too.

I also have this problem using Garageband in a school network situation when students open their project on one station, save it to their network drive, and later open it at a different station. 90% of the time there will be no issue, but sometimes audio files are lost. (Garageband '11, iMacs)
That sounds like it might be a failure of the students to perform a Save As and check Archive Project when they do. This asks GB to pull all the files it needs into the associated .band document rather than point to them externally (and then risk not having them be there).

• I keep losing original files, what am I doing wrong?

I'm running OSX 10.3 on my Powerbook G3. (Classic is still on the computer too) I have a basic problem of not understanding how my documents (or pictures) and alias' are interconnected. Multiple times I have accidentally erased all copies of a file after trashing what I thought was a copy or backup of that file. This has happened when trying to clean up old versions of text files, when trying to organize in iphoto, and even when deleting backup copies of my Quicken files. I've lost all of my edited photos twice, lost the most recent 4 months of my Quicken checkbook. There is a basic Mac concept I'm not getting here, so I keep thinking it is easier for me to go back to using a PC so I dont mess up. Any advice?

Hi needtheanswers
Welcome to discussions.
I am sorry you are losing files by accidentally trashing the wrong ones, but i would like to know more why you have such heavy use of aliases.
I use IPhoto 2 and I don't deal with aliases.
The iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder is exclusively for iPhoto to manage the images that appear in the application. If you interfere with any of the files in there, any files indexed there may be lost.
After importing photos into iPhoto, they reside nestled within folders organised by year.
If you want to make Duplicates of any, choose Export and define the location. eg. Pictures/Backups/Photos, or onto an external drive, it can be anywhere.
If you delete a photo its record remains to keep the library file coherent, but the photo is deleted.
If your edit a photo, iPhoto keeps the original in a Folder called Original ( which is pretty original) and adds the edited photo to the folder.
There is no need to even open the Picture/iPhoto Library, except for curiosity.
It doesn't create alias', but could you tell me in more detail, the sort of things you do with iPhoto, whether to make backup (duplicates) and how these result in aliases.
You can always check if a file is an alias by selecting it, clicking Command + i to open the information window, which will tell you many things about the file including whether it is an alias.
I don't have experience with Quicken.

• Library keeps losing track of files

Somehow, randomly, iTunes keeps losing track of certain tracks in my library. I don't see any reason why this should be happening. Nothing's been moved. No tags have been changed. It's totally random: every once in a while, an exclamation point appears. Everything is latest update and everything, so that's definitely not the issue.
My library is growing to a reasonably serious size at this point (about 8500 items including music, movies and TV), so that might be the problem, but it shouldn't be... should it? If it is, that certainly qualifies as a bug.
This is being asked a lot, it seems, and nobody seems to answer. Consider this a bump.

This is happening to me as well. Yesterday everything worked fine (with the exception of an occassional exclamation point over the past few months) and today ALL my songs, imported and purchased, state the original file cannot be found. I have about $1000 worth of purchased music and videos, not to mention almost 5000 imported files. I need to get this fixed as well. I am not a happy camper at this point. Anyone have any other information?

• I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5. I keep losing access to my internal hard drive. I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours. Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive. I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive. The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal. Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing). It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

• External drive conntected to Time Capsule keeps losing connection

I've been having this problem since I bought my TC over one year ago. Other than this everything works fine (aside from the occasional need for a restart).
I have an external 500GB drive attached to my 500GB TC via usb. I use the TC strictly for backups and the other drive to host my media files. When I want to use those files I switch on the drive. Only about half of the time does that work. When it does work everything is fine. I see the drive in the finder as expected.
When it doesn't work, I can see the drive name in the finder. But if I click to go into the folder, I get an error saying that the connection cannot be found.
It shows up in the Airport Utility as normal.
Powering the drive off and on does not help.
Relaunching the finder doesn't help either.
The only way I can connect to the drive again is to either logoff and log back into my mac, or restart the TC.
It seems that my computer is remembering some kind of network disk mounting settings that don't get refreshed when I turn on the drive, but then do get refreshed when I logoff and back in. Does anyone know how I could force that refresh to happen? Has anyone had this problem before?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
PS all my software and firmware are the latest.
Thanks.

In the past, when I updated iTunes, some items would be 'lost'. I quit updating, still running 10.6. I do keep my files on an external hard drive, which I plug in before starting iTunes. If I leave the drive off, and update, would that keep me from losing any files? Also, does anyone know how to search the iTunes store by price? I'm particularly interested in movies and audiobooks... Thanks

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first. Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one? The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless). To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes. To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup". Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

• LaCie external hard drive keeps losing connection to Windows 8.1 computer

Hello all,
My LaCie external hard drive (Rugged version) seems like it keeps losing connection to my brand new Windows 8.1 laptop. The laptop is an HP Pavillion 15-p 133cl TouchSmart Notebook which I just got today. Basically, every few minutes, or if I nudge the external
a bit, the computer will seem like it disconnected and reconnected to the external hard drive in a split second and bring it up in the Windows Explorer. This external hard drive doesn't show any problems connecting to any other computer, but it has occurred
with 2/3 ports on this computer so far. I'm a bit worried, because I definitely DO NOT want the files on this external to get corrupted in any way. What should I do? Thanks a bunch.

may I know your external HDD model, to check which USB version to isolate power and cable connection issue
if this is USB 3.0 try to attached at USB 3.0 at your laptop, your laptop has 2 USB 3.0 and 1 for 2.0, for external HDD with USB 2.0 sometimes need more power / more than 1 connection, sometimes the power will loose
but since the trigger it will disconnect if you nudge the HDD, I suggest back up data to your laptop first, try to change with other data or power cable, try also update your laptop chipset
try to check with other device to isolate port issue
may I know if you are using other PC, did your external HDD also will disconnect if you nudge it?
contact your external HDD manufactured to get some suggestion

• I keep losing midi sound in my 49e synth

I select it in the track channel but for some reason I keep losing the sound or don't know how to get the 49e sound back.
I am new to Logic 8 and was wondering if there is an easy tip on keeping track of my 49e synth sounds and not losing them?
Thanks so much for any help.

Windows or Mac?
Check the codec folder in PPro programs to see if the codecs are actually present.
If on windows, run a disk check to recover any possible corrupt files, (it's happened to me before with files that mysteriously disappear). If still no luck, then restore your PC using a recovery point to before you installed that additional software and see if that clears it up.

• KEEP LOSING MY BOOKMARKS

Keep losing my bookmarks when signing on and off, and mostly when i reset Firefox to stop freezeups which happen quite often

Hello,
Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.
You can first try fixing the places file.
Instructions: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Next...
#Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
#* Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button and select Show All Bookmarks.
#* Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
# At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
# Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
# In the new window that appears, click OK.
# Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.
For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

• ITunes keeps losing my library every 2-3 days!

iTunes keeps losing my library every 2-3 days. Completely erasing all songs and playlists. This is incredibly annoying and forces me to redo it all AGAIN.
Any way for me to solve this problem?

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.
