I keep losing original files, what am I doing wrong?

I'm running OSX 10.3 on my Powerbook G3. (Classic is still on the computer too) I have a basic problem of not understanding how my documents (or pictures) and alias' are interconnected. Multiple times I have accidentally erased all copies of a file after trashing what I thought was a copy or backup of that file. This has happened when trying to clean up old versions of text files, when trying to organize in iphoto, and even when deleting backup copies of my Quicken files. I've lost all of my edited photos twice, lost the most recent 4 months of my Quicken checkbook. There is a basic Mac concept I'm not getting here, so I keep thinking it is easier for me to go back to using a PC so I dont mess up. Any advice?

Hi needtheanswers
Welcome to discussions.
I am sorry you are losing files by accidentally trashing the wrong ones, but i would like to know more why you have such heavy use of aliases.
I use IPhoto 2 and I don't deal with aliases.
The iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder is exclusively for iPhoto to manage the images that appear in the application. If you interfere with any of the files in there, any files indexed there may be lost.
After importing photos into iPhoto, they reside nestled within folders organised by year.
If you want to make Duplicates of any, choose Export and define the location. eg. Pictures/Backups/Photos, or onto an external drive, it can be anywhere.
If you delete a photo its record remains to keep the library file coherent, but the photo is deleted.
If your edit a photo, iPhoto keeps the original in a Folder called Original ( which is pretty original) and adds the edited photo to the folder.
There is no need to even open the Picture/iPhoto Library, except for curiosity.
It doesn't create alias', but could you tell me in more detail, the sort of things you do with iPhoto, whether to make backup (duplicates) and how these result in aliases.
You can always check if a file is an alias by selecting it, clicking Command + i to open the information window, which will tell you many things about the file including whether it is an alias.
I don't have experience with Quicken.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Thanks in advance

Often, this error message means that you have used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer, and this has corrupted the files. There is a fix which uncorrupts the files at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
But you said you get this message when you "connect my other camera Nikon D3100", the key word being "connect", and this doesn't really fit the description I just gave. This error message normally happens after you have transferred the photos to your computer via Nikon software, not when you connect it. So ... maybe you need to explain a little more ... what exact task (what menu options, what are you clicking on, what are you trying to do) when you get this error.

Thank you for your response. I fixed the problem by simply importing the
images using windows rather than the Nikon Transfer.

• When trying to connect my ipod to my 2011 nissan al I get is reading files.What am I doing wrong

When connecting my ipod to my 2011 nissan radio system all that shows up on the radio is reading files. What am I doing wrong and how do I correct the problem?

You can try the standard fixes:
- Reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd.
However, some accessorie,s like car systems, stopped working after iOS 5. Have you contacted the manufacturer of the car sytem?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

• Sharpening Raw files: what am I doing wrong?

My problem is getting my shots (Nikon D80 & Nikon Lenses + Tripod) through the Alamy quality control barrier! I have had three rejections so far. I am following the workflow suggested in Martin Evening's book on CS4 which suggests that CS4 camera Raw is the place to sharpen images.
On close inspection I have identified the following:
The raw files when viewed in Bridge look soft even when I wait for a few seconds for the laptop to pick up (Vostro 1720 with truelife screen)
When clicked onto 100% view they look sharp, this is the criteria I use to open them in camera raw but dont understand why the first view (hitting the space bar in bridge) isnt sharp.
When opened in Camera Raw they look soft and that's when I have to try to fix
Using the Clarity Contrast and Sharpening sliders I can never seem to regain the sharpness viewed in the Bridge view
The Raw preferences are set to sharpen all images
My issue seems to be with my workflow rather than the images shot.
If someone could assist me with this I would be really grateful. I have not included pictures as they are 5mb+ at jpeg.

The initial previews of the raw files use the thumbnail embedded in the raw file by the camera. If you look carefully, these thumbnails are surrounded by a black border. As Bridge builds high quality thumbnails using Camera Raw with the current ACR settings, the black border is removed. This process is best seen if you purge the cache for a folder containing many images (Tools, Cache, Purge cache for folder) and then watch the thumbnails as the cache is rebuilt.

This behavior is puzzling. The 100% preview should show the appearance of the files when they are opened. Anyway, if the images are soft when opened with Photoshop, they are likely soft and you need to review your technique. Not all Nikon lenses are equally sharp, especially at large apertures. Your focusing may not be optimal. Manual focus is difficult to judge on an APS sized viewfinder unless you use a magnifier and autofocus may be off. Mirror lockup is necessary for maximum sharpness.
If the image captured by the camera is not sharp, sharpening will not restore sharpeness that was never present. However, proper capture sharpening does improve the appearance of the image. It improves edge contrast but can not restore detail that was not present in the image. Deconvolution methods can restore some image detail, but they are difficult to use. See this link for an example:

You could use usendit (www.usendit.com) to upload a NEF for review by users of the forum. This service is free.

• I keep loosing calendar history, what am I doing wrong

I got my iPad and iPhone around February and have noticed a few times that the calendar history vanishes. At the moment I only have the last two months. Where has the rest gone? Do I need to change something in my settings? Can I get it back?
Help appreciated!

You haven't been syncing with anything?
It might be in the backup. If you have not changed anything significant on the iPad since that sync, and have not synced again since losing the data, try this. If you've added any important documents or other media since taht sync, save them off the iPad before proceeding.
First, without connecting the iPad, go into iTunes Preferences, the Devices tab, and turn off auto-syncing.
Connect your iPad to the computer, in iTunes right click on the iPad under the Devices tab and choose Restore from Backup.
Depending on exactly when the last sync was, you may or may not get you calendars back.
I recommend that you get a Google account and start syncing your calendar with it. You can also sync your contacts if you set the account up as an Exchange account on the iPad. This will help prevent these kind of mistakes, and give's an online way to get to your calendar when the iPad is not available.
hope i helped

• What am i doing wrong, SWF File

Hello all,
This is driving me crazy!
I have made a flex app, that imports a swf file, converts it to a movie clip, and then pulls which frame to display from a XML file, that is checked every second. This works fine when using the following SWF file - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash.swf
Although when i tried re-creating my own example - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash2.swf
my flex app fails to respond correctly. THe swf file just loops thru all the frames in one go, and fails to take into account the XML file pointing at what frame to look at, and fails to look at the HTTPS service.
Ok so here is an example of the app with both examples embeded.
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfwork/Main.html - This is using the working swf file,
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfbroke/Main.html - This is using the swf file that i have created.
THe code that i am using to achieve this is as follows -
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" applicationComplete="load()">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
[Bindable] public var dataDump:String = "datadump";
[Bindable] private var myText:String
private var flashMovie:MovieClip;
private function initMovie():void{
flashMovie = loader.content as MovieClip;
private function load():void{
flashMovie.gotoAndStop(myText)
getImage.send();
setTimeout(load,1000);
private function handleImage(event:ResultEvent):void
myText = event.result.framelocation;
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:SWFLoader id="loader" source="flash2.swf" complete="initMovie()" x="-9" y="-3"/>
<mx:Button label="Next" click="flashMovie.nextFrame()" x="78" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="Previous" click="flashMovie.prevFrame()" x="0" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="4" click="flashMovie.gotoAndPlay(7)" x="156" y="405"/>
<mx:HTTPService id="getImage" result="handleImage(event)" url="http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/change.xml" method="POST">

My question is when creating my own swf file, what am i doing wrong? Flex clearly isnt interacting with it in the same way as the original swf, by the way, this swf was taken from a tutorial.
If anyone could point me in a direction or offer help on this i would be thankful. Im sure i am just missing something out when i create my swf in flash

1. your swf file must be published for as3.
2. it should consist of a main timeline with more than 1 frame.
3. it needs as many frames as you're going to reference in the xml.
4. that main timeline should contain objects on its frames so you can see when the main timeline is on one frame vs another referenced in your xml.
that's it. those are the only requirements of the swf.
have you confirmed that intiMovie() is called first and then load()? if so, how did you confirm?

• Acrobat 5.0 How do I keep the original file name after I have converted a Word doc to PDF?

MY colleague has a certain setting in Acrobat that allows him to keep the original file name when he converts documents from Word to PDF. Every time I convert Word, Acrobat overwrites the filename and names it "untitled.pdf". I would like to retain the original name and for Acrobat to simply add the .pdf file extension to the original name. How do I do this?

I have no idea what you are doing for sure. Does your WORD document have a name. I opened a WORD document and selected the Acrobat Distiller printer for AA5, I got the file menu for selecting the name and it was automatically filled in with the DOC changed to PDF. If you are using PDF Maker, then you will need to search there - I removed PDF Maker for AA5 years ago and can't view that part. I see the same types of options in PDF Maker for AA8.1.2 as I saw in the printer for AA5 and guess it is the same. The untitled.pdf suggests that you never saved the original DOC file so it has a name.

What am I doing wrong or missing??

I have this same problem in October of 2013. I am unable to import .ics files into Lion that I exported from my Snow Leopard MacBookPro without losing all of my future events (which all have alerts attached). All of the events from BEFORE today's date are successfully importing, presumably because they are no longer expected to trigger alerts via Apple Mail. After my first unsuccessful attempt, I learned that iCal was communicating with iCloud by default. I have since turned off iCloud, but I have not found a solution to the problem. Harvey

I keep getting this error in Dreamweaver when I am trying to upload my website? Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? here is the error message: /html - error occurred - Unable to create remote folder /html. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem. Make sure you have proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured. File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed. Files with errors: 1 /html

Nobody can tell you anything without knowing exact site and server specs, but I would suspect that naming the folder "html" wasn't the brightest of ideas, since that's usually a default (invisible) folder name existing somewhere on the server and the user not having privileges to overwrite it.

• ITunes no longers asks "Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?" - Can this be fixed?

I'm not sure if this was a recent update in Mavericks, but when I used to delete items from iTunes it would ask something along the lines of:
Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?
Now I no longer get this, instead iTunes asks:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected song from your iTunes library?
After which, if you choose the option "Delete Song", you get no option to keep the original file, it just straight up deletes if from my library and hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? For whatever reason, I want to be able to keep the original file on my Mac, without keeping it in my iTunes library.
I've tried resetting dialogue warning, and this hasn't made a difference.
