I killed my iPod, HELP

I’ve killed a pair of iPods (40gb Photo & 30gb Video) and I don’t know what to do.
If this has been covered somewhere in the forum can you please link me to the appropriate thread. I apologise now if this is long but I need to write down what has happened, crossing fingers that someone out there can help.
The first problem occurred about a month ago, my computer wouldn’t recognise my iPod. For no apparent reason my computer just decided that one morning it was going to drive me insane and say it could recognised the USB device. Finally, after searching the net I changed all the USB devices around and suddenly started to work again, phew!
Then I bought an external HDD as my ever growing music collection was consuming too much of my PCs memory and gradually slowing everything up. I transferred all the music over to the HDD and everything seemed fine. My brother uses my PC to upload music to his iPod and for this I made him another user on PC and with the change of music location I made all the appropriate changes to the iTunes on my brothers account and once again everything seemed fine.
This is when everything starts to go wrong!
I had just added some albums to iTunes and wanted to transfer these onto the iPod, I connected it to the PC in the usual manner and nothing happened for a while. Usually, my iPod is recognized by iTunes quite quickly and the transfer begins. On this occasion nothing happened for while and then suddenly the transfer started but it was taking an enormous amount of time to transfer a single track and after only a few tracks had transferred it stopped stating that there had been a disk write error and from that point onwards nothing has transferred ever again. I attempted to transfer again and things got more serious, I received the message "This iPod needs to be reformatted for use on your PC. Click on the Update button below to run the iPod Updater application that will allow you to reformat or restore you iPod" I press Update and after a minute or so I then get the message "Firmware update failure. Disk write error" On the iPod screen there is a file icon with an exclamation mark. And now I can do nothing with the iPod except have the urge to launch it from the first floor of my house.
My brother has just popped round and left his iPod for me to update. I was going to leave it and tell him to get someone else but I stupidly connected his iPod and what a surprise it did the same thing. So I am now looking at two DEAD iPods! Is that a criminal offence?
At least my brothers iPod will be covered by his warranty. But is there anything I can do? Does anyone out there have any suggestions. Does anyone want to volunteer to call my brother to say that I have murdered his blessed iPod? Thought not!
Any help will be truly, gratefully received.
Many thanks.

  • Did windows vista kill my ipod?

I recently bought a new computer with windows vista (which I hate, should have gone with the mac). my ipod has been working fine for a very long time now. when I downloaded the newest version of itunes to my new computer and tried to sync my ipod, the ipod froze up and I havnt been able to get the thing working since. I have rebooted, restored, and everything countless times. I decided to go back to my old computer becasue I never had problems with the ipod in the past. I tried all the same things with my old computer numerous times and still nothing. the ipod is on but completly frozen and everytime I reboot or restore the same outcome. the only time that my ipod is not frozen is when it is in diskmode and I have tried rebooting reinstalling numerous times from this mode and still nothing. I realize that there is a new article on the mac website saying that windows vista can currupt your ipod, but this was put on the website after I had apparently killed my ipod. I miss my ipod, can anyone help me????

I have had the same problem- I recently bought a new Windows Vista laptop and plugged in a new Ipod cLASSIC (80gb). It charged up fine and seemed to working, but when I tried to transfer songs onto it and ejected it from the computer, the Ipod just died. It will not turn off or on, cannot be reset and will not charge either on the computer (I've tried it on various computers)or via the mains charger I have. I took it back to the shop, assuming it was a dodgy Ipod and they replaced it. I am now on my 4th new Ipod and the same thing has happened to all of them (each time I plug them in they just stop working). The guys in the Apple Shop (where I took my laptop and Ipod to checked out) can't work out what is going wrong but seem to think it is my laptop. They did not mention anything about Windows Vista not being compatible with Ipods, so I'm not sure what to do for the best. I am currently using my old laptop wich is Windows XP but am considering investing in a new Apple Mac laptop!!

  • ITunes Killed my iPod

I just installed iTunes update/version 7.6 and it killed my iPod. My computer is not recognized by any computer now. I plugged my iPod into 5 different computers and none saw the iPod. All are running Windows XP Pro, and 3 had iTunes 7.6 and 2 had iTunes 7.5. My son had not updated to iTunes 7.6 and his Nano works fine on all computers. So the problem evidently is that iTunes did something to the iPod. I hope Apple figures out a quick, $0 fix since their problem rendered a lot of iPods useless. If they don't, a lot of loyal iPod owners may be converting to a Zune very quickly. If anyone knows a fix, I would really appreciate some help. Thanks.

I just fixed the problem by doing a hard reset on the Nano. Turn the Nano on, then simultaneously push Menu and center button, holding them down until the iPod reboots itself.

  • How Itunes 7.0 killed my ipod 60g photo

Here is a sad story for others benefit. I am out of luck! as my ipod is 13 months old and out of warranty... and nothing seems to work. [I am hoping for some tech master on these forums who can help]
    1. I had a perfectly working ipod (No issues) Which had just been synced by itunes 6.0x fine 4 days back. Itunes told me a few days back to update to 7.0 version. I accepted and installed 7.0. No issues during itunes installation.
    2. I plugged in the ipod. Itunes 7.0 told me that the ipod has to be restored!!!!(strange) Dumb me! - I thought it to be ok and accepted. Itunes started the restore and midway - gave the error "Error 1418" cannot restore. etc. IPod still showed donot disconnect. I tried eject - no luck. So i had to unplug the ipod. Luckily the ipod did come back to life after a few minutes.
    3. As it did not work first time, I rebooted the pc - Reset the ipod & and tried again. This time, I did a complete restore without any errors. Then I synced the ipod which worked fine as well (18G of songs came back to life). I thought I missed the bullet but I was wrong.
    4. When I tried to play the music - it would not play anything and just keep skipping tracks. ie: If I select album1 - track1 - it would just go 1..2..3...4...5 tracks automatically and on and on when I hit play. Ok - so I decide so sync again
    5. Next day Itunes was updated to 7.018 - so I decided to download the latest version (7.018). Plugged in my ipod and if you can guess - I got the "IPOD needs to be restored" AGAIN!. I accepted as there was no other option).
    6. This time around the Restore took 1-2 hours and it was slow. I decided to wait till its done. Then it told me to unplug the ipod and put it in power outlet which I did. I saw the update bar at the bottom move 2-3 times. Then it reset itself and started showing the bad folder icon!!!!
    7. From that moment on - all it does is "FOLDER with Exclamation mark. I have reset the ipod multiple times - but all it does is cycles between the IPOD ICON and SAD FOlder icon.
    8. Then I read up on disk mode to see if I can use disk mode. I removed itunes to make sure it does not pop up.
    9. Now each time I plug in the ipod into the pc - it cycles between
    a. "Apple icon" ; b. "Dont disconnect" (Which is ok: As I see disk G on the desktop) & immediately followed by c. "disconnect.. " (drive G dissapear). I tried 3 PCs and each pc does the same thing. Drive shows up then dissapears. Tried reinstalling Itunes but Itunes does not see the ipod!!!
    10. I cannot go into diagnostic mode either as it only goes to SAD folder error icon.
So to end the rather long frustrating story. It seems to me that Itunes 7.0 and 7.018 has succesfully managed to kill my ipod
Does anyone have any idea on how to get the ipod disk to show up in disk mode without disconnecting automatically? Does anyone have an ideas on what may be wrong?
Thanks in advance for any guidance... else consider this as a warning to not restore your 4th gen ipod photo.

Hi Dwb, THanks for your advice. I will try to find a mac-friend and try your trick in next few days.
Here is a quick update which is just blowing me away!. Looks like the new firmware 1.2.1 is feature-rich See below update.
    1. I was fiddling around the diagnostic mode to see if I can bring the ipod back to life. after multiple tries to get to diag mode (Pressing the rev-select-ffwd at the same time when the apple logo shows up) - All of a sudden the IPOD comes back to life. It says select English - then I select English and then I see the full menus.
    2. Downloaded Itunes 7.0.1.8 again and Itunes (On another computer ) says your IPOD is corrupted! (Looks like I am a step back - before it was only saying your IPOD needs to be restored). I selected RESTORE IPOD (Only option)
    3. It is very very slowly doing its stuff Restoring IPOD. . . . . .
Maybe 1 dot every 2 minutes. I will let it do its stuff and update the group.
Basically what this tells me is 1. The HDD is fine; 2. The IPOD screen/functionality etc is fine. 3. The USB connection and sync/etc is fine.
What I believe is broken is the restore process now embedded in the ITunes 7.0+ s/w with the 1.2.1 f/w for color ipods. For some reason it screwed up my HDD the first time around. Maybe it did not completely format/partition the drive. I have my fingers crossed...2nd try ongoing

  • Virus or corrupted file on computer killing my ipods??

i have had 3 ipods die on me: 2 were 20gb and 1 was a 30gb. the first two died in the same way, basically a damaged hard drive made the songs go all wonky and then stopped working all together. the 30gb i had for 4 days before it died- the screen was on but completely blank and would not turn off, and when i brought it into the store they had to give me a new one.
my question is: could there be something on my computer that is killing ipods?? and if there is, how do i go about finding it? for the meantime, my new ipod is only charging through the wall adapter. my computer-savvy friends are convinced my computer is the culprit, while EVERY mac genius has told me that can't be the case.
    any feedback would be helpful.

but how do i know it's the ipod hardware or something on my computer
Because if your computer is still working, chances are it is not going to kill the iPod.
Sounds like a run of bad luck on the iPods.

  • How come I can't put music on my ipod? I already have a fair amount of music on my ipod but I have enough space for more. I am using a new computer with itunes and it is telling me if I wasnt to put the new music on my ipd i need to erase my ipod HELP!

Because you can only synce with one iTunes library and you are switching libries by using the new computer. To nake this yyour syncing computer:
    - Move all the media(apps, music, synced video and photos etc) to the new computer.
    - Connect the iPofd yo the computer and bake a backup fo the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes doe not include media.
To move mdia to the new computer see:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

  • After updating to iOS 6 my iPod Touch 4th.Gen is virtually unusable ... does anyone know how to sue Apple since they gave no warning about iOS 6 being for iPad optimisation and a killer  for iPods ?

After updating to iOS 6 my iPod Touch 4th.Gen is virtually unusable ... does anyone know how to sue Apple since they gave no warning about iOS 6 being for iPad optimisation and a killer for iPods ?  Before I throw away my iPod Touch does anyone know if Apple intends to rectify their obnoxious disregard for iPod users by issuing another 'upgrade' which will allow iPods to work without the constant system crashes that iOS 6 has caused ?

Contact a lawyer if you want to sue.
    Otherwise try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Telephone # for iPod help

Can somebody tell me the number to call to ask for iPod help?
    thanks

    Hi Drummer,
    You can contact Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
If you purchased your iPod recently (within 90 days, I believe) you get 1 complementary tech support call. After that, it's an arm and a leg ($60).
    Good luck,

  • ITunes 7 killed my iPod!!??

My iPod suddenly started acting squirrelly after updating to iTunes 7... every time I connected it to my computer, it made iTunes freeze. I couldn't update it with some new music I had added to iTunes, so I went through the 5 Rs as described on Apple's support site. I got to the Restore stage, and I killed my iPod!
During the Restore process, my whole system froze. I was forced to shut down the computer and restart, and now all I get on my iPod is the apple logo and a spinning hard disk. I can restart it, but not shut it off. My computer won't recognize it at all. All I could do was let the battery run down, hard disk spinning all the way.
Has this been caused by the iTunes update? I've read LOTS of posts on this forum about sudden ipod problems after the update. Does Apple have any news/updates on this problem? If their update killed my iPod, what will they do about it?
Anyone else have an apple logo and nothing else? Any ideas to fix?
PS - It's a 3rd gen 30GB iPod... kind of older, but I do love it so! I'm going through withdrawals already...

I had same problem with mine. Where itunes would freeze, I never got to use my ipod cause I started right with the 7.0. Well, troubleshooted until I was ready to throw them and nothing worked. I got different messages when I plugged the ipod in. Sometimes I would get found new hardware, sometimes need to reboot for software to work properly, or found unknown device. It also would not show up on my computer..or rarely showed up as an f drive. I also got a message that said can not find drivers for this device.
Make sure you have a 2.0 usb port..this is needed not recommended as it states. I don't know if it's the software or what. If you have a 2.0, how old is it? I had a 2.0 and everything but ipod worked, when I bought a new 2.0 the ipod worked fine. I also have an 80 gig that I had same problem on and this solved it. Usb only costed me 20 bucks, but it solved the problem immediately.

  • Ipod help viewer not available

An apple expert had me trash all of my iTunes files while trying to help with an iPod Touch problem and then reinstall iTunes 9.1. Now I cannot access iPod help viewer. Also I no longer see a credit I have in iTunes which used to show when I opened iTunes.

There are no apps for the iPod classic at all. Apps are only for the iPod Touch or the iPhone.

ok so my ipod touch is saying theres no music on it but when i plug it up and get on itunes it says theres music on it but its still not showing up on my ipod. help anyonee??

Have you tried resetting your iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Next would be to unsync the music and then try syncing the songs to the iPod
    - Last would be to restore from backup.

  • Forgotten security code on iPod - help!

I have forgotten my 4 digit security code and can't get into my ipod - help!

If you do not know the combination, you can try and connect it to the iTunes library you normally sync it.  Upon properly ejecting it from iTunes and your PC, you may find that it is now unlocked. If it is, disable the screen lock or change the combination immediately.
Otherwise, your only other option is to connect it to iTunes and restore it to factory settings.
