I know it's an old question, but are we ever going to see network indexing on x64 Windows?

I know it's been asked time and time again, but I would like to know if anyone knows of any plans to allow non-Windows Server network locations (such as NAS devices, Linux boxes, and storage plugged into supporting routers) to be indexed and
used in libraries without having to store the mass of data locally on the device.
I already know that you can add the network locations to libraries without them being indexed although doing so removes the ability to search by meta data, and also seems to have inherent issues with Modern-UI apps: it seems as though apps such as Photos
and Music ignore any network locations in libraries, presumably because they're not indexed.
I'm aware of an add-in designed for Windows 7 that allows UNC paths to be indexed, although this is only for x86. Does anyone know of any plans to implement this feature in Windows 8 / x64.
If anyone from MS actually reads this please hear me out- this has a genuine logical consumer-focused benefit. Windows 8 is pretty much Microsoft acknowledging the changes in the form factors being used by consumers, with users moving to mobile devices with
less storage capacity. Now surely in such devices having full support to index and access network locations is a no-brainer. Especially seeing as Modern-UI applications seem incapable of using non-indexed network locations at all.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

I second this.  I've just spent two hours trying to work round this with symbolic shares and the like.
re: If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.
Surely preposterous is the justification...
"However this is now not supported or available for Windows
7 due to the following concerns:
----Increased network traffic when multiple clients would indexing the same share."
followed by "Please
try following suggestions:
a. Enable the clients for offline files (CSC). This will cache the files on the client and allow the clientsindex to index the
content locally. "
Err, so copying a Video media file over the network to a local cache is the proposed solution to decrease network traffic?????
"behaviour by design" isn't an answer to end this thread.  What everyone is telling you Microsoft is the DESIGN IS BAD, so PLEASE CHANGE IT.
If only they would listen.

  • May Be Old question but undo not available in Acrobat X Standard

This maybe a tired old question but I can not find a straight forward answer. In Acrobat X standard, I have some large pdf's that I created by merging many smaller PDF files together that were MS Word files converted to PDF. When I want to update something I go back to the orginal Word Doc and edit, resave as pdf then I replace the page with the new PDF. Once in a blue moon I screw up and replace the wrong PDF page (it happens). But lo and behold no UNDO, I don't get it, in Acrobat 9 it worked but I had the professional version of that. I had not saved the file or anything, so why no undo? Is it because I have the standard version?
If I edit the PDF file with the text editor then the undo function lights up but I would think something as simple as a page replacement should be able to undo as long as you have not saved it?

If the plug-in is not even loaded, chances are that something goes wrong
when the OS tries to link the plug-in to dynamic libraries. Verify that you
have all the libraries installed that are required to run the plug-in.

hi friends i have mac ibook g4 i know its a really old model but its perfectly fine it has installed mac os x 10.5.8 ok whenever i copy and paste anything it says no free space weather i copy from folder to desktop or from usb to mac plz help plz

There is no download for 10.4.x or 10.5.x, there is a very slim chance you can get 10.5 by calling Apple, but usually you can only get it on eBay & such.
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

I don't believe there is a square brush among the sets that ship with Photoshop, but there are plenty to download, and it is super easy to make one.
Just drag with the rectangular Marquee tool, fill with black on a new layer, and go Edit > Define brush preset

  • Same old question, but a little different I think

I see that there are many, many questions about how to manage multiple computers and iPhones.  To be honest, the answers leave me a little confused, as I have tried a couple of the suggestions and nothing has helped my specific situation.  So I apologize if I'm being repetitive but please bear with me.
Until recently we had one desktop with one version of iTunes that had everyone's songs on it (we're a family of 4).  In the last few months everyone has gotten iPhones, and my daughter just got a laptop, and this is where the confusion begins.  Everyone used the main iTunes account to sync up with their devices, then we started creating new accounts and nobody can get what they need anymore.
It looks like currently all music and apps are on my wife's iTunes account.  The rest of us have some smaller subsets based on what we were authorized to load back onto iTunes (desktop) after loading stuff from my wife's iTunes account.  I think ideally what I would like to be able to do is have four separate iTunes accounts - each accessible from our individual desktop accounts (and my daughter's also from her laptop).  I'd like to be able to take all the songs and apps from the main account & dole them out to who they belong to, then have each of our devices linked to our own iTunes account.  So everything separate, BUT then I'd like to have the ability to share songs or apps between our accounts through directories when we want to.
Does any of this make sense?  I don't know if our needs are realistic in general, if I need to back everything up and start from scratch, or how I do any of this.  I feel kind of dense that I can't figure this out.  Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I use Handbrake (not available for Windows yet) or alternatively you could use quicktime pro

  • I know this is a common question - but is there a way to connect a USB pen drive to the iPad? (See details)

Basically, I just bought a Nexus 7 after growing impatient waiting for the iPad mini.  But the Nexus has a fault, and I'm taking it back next week.  I'm wondering whether to get my money back, or just get another - because it's a pretty good device!
My major big thing about it, is that I can plug a USB pen drive into it with a OTG cable and either just stream pictures, documents or movies - or save them to the Nexus for viewing without a dangly wire to annoy me.  It's great!  However, being an Apple fan - an iPad mini (if it comes out!) would be simpler, because it would sync to iCloud etc.  whereas obviously my Nexus 7 doesn't do this at all.  The only iCloud factor I can access is my mail.  Which isn't a problem, just a prefference.
So, with current iPads - is there a way, without jailbraking the device, to say stream movies to the device through a USB pen drive/external HDD, and save them to the iPad?
I've seen ways on YouTube but thought it was best to ask here.
If this was possible, I'd swap the Nexus for the iPad mini straight away - the Nexus 7 is fantastic!  No problem with it, if it wasn't for iCloud, I'd keep that.
Oh, and as a closing question on the iPad mini/Apple Maps - the Nexus 7 lets you download offline maps, and also you have a GPS which is used even when not on wifi - do you think this will be likely on an iPad mini? I can't see it myself.
It's a sad day for me, when I start to think Google may still have the upperhand on 7" tablets, even after the iPad mini is released.  I might even wait for the Second generation (if it exists!) - just because I for some reason never like first generation things from Apple.
But anyway, that's a lot of questions and info!
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • Probabally old question, but why can't I get Full Screen?

Hi, I have the latest Quicktime, upgraded to Quicktime Pro...installed and registered but still no full screen. At Best I can few 3/4 screen. What do I need to do to fix? My old Windows Media was a true full screen....Is Apples?
As they say in the movies, "What we have here is a failure to communicate." Or, in this case, a simple problem of semantics. If you are asking if there is a QT Player setting that will "automatically" scale both height and width of your movie to the size of your monitor screen, then the answer is "no, not unless the aspect ratio of both your screen and your movie happen to be exactly the same." What you do have is:
    1) Full Screen - display of movie without contol planel centered to monitor screen with non-display areas (if any) rendered as a user selectable solid color. Default size of movie area can be set using the "Prefeence" option to Half, Actual, Double, Full Screen (i.e., scaled), and Current.
    2) Presentation - display of movie in "Full Screen" mode with the option to temporariy modify the default display size.
    3) Half Size - movie displayed in control panel at one half the "normal" size.
    4) Actual Size - movie displayed in control panel at "normal" size.
    5) Double Size - movie displayed in control panel at twice the "normal" size.
    6) Fit to Screen - movie displayed in control panel with height of control panel scaled to height of screen less menu bar or width of control panel scaled to width of screen depending on which dimension requires the lesser amount of scaling.
What you don't have is a "Zoom" mode in which the lesser relative dimension is scaled the the associated screen dimension with excess display area "cropped" from screen. However, if you are not a "purist" you can always "simulate" either the "zoom" option or a true "fill" screen option. To do this, simply
    a) open the "Show Movie Properties" window
    b) set the video track display setting shorter relative dimension to the associated monitor display dimension with "Preserve Aspect Ratio" option selected to simulate a "cropped/zoom" screen display or
    c) set the height and width of the video track display setting to exactly match you monitor display setting with the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" option deselected to simulate a "fill" screen display
If you wish to preserve your movie settting for quick and easy viewing at a later time, then add the following steps:
    d) select the main movie track
    e) set the "Automatically Play" option under the "Presentation" tab to auto play the movie when opened
    f) set the "Enter full screen" option under the "Presentation" tab to hide the menu bar when playing
    g) save the movie as a reference movie in the same drive location and do not delete or move the orginal file
Now you can view the "fill" or "zoom" version of your movie whenever you wish by simply double-clicking the reference movie icon. Hope that helps.

  • Kind of an old question, but...

Well, long story short, lil' ol me put my ipod through the wash and dryer about a month ago on October 12. I posted and tried to get help but nothing worked. Since then my nano has been plugged into my computer with the black and white battery sign showin all the time in the center of the screen. So, my question is, is there any way at all to fix it, without sending it to a company? Like can i fix it myself tonight?
    Thanks...
    Pnkpolo92

We had a cell phone that went through the washer and dryer. Bought a new one, and after a couple months of seeing the broken phone sitting around I threw it in a drawer and forgot it about it. Pulled it out a year later and it had (at some point) dried out enough to the point that it started working again. So there is hope, but it may not be overnight.

  • I know this is a dumb question but...

Somehow my spouse has got some kind of Help window open. It explains what's on the screen, isolating various texxt or function boxes. It's a black rectangular box that can be dragged and resized. I've minimized it but would like to get rid of it. Anyone know what this is?

Turn off VoiceOver in the Universal Access or Accessibility pane of System Preferences.

    Hello,
My daughter has an iphone 5, she has had it since July and has never plugged it into the computer. If I plug it in itunes asks if it should be backed up from a previous backup or set up as new phone. I don't want her to lose all her info, pics, imessage conversations etc. Should I even bother plugging it in? We share the same itunes account but she has her own apple id.
I know I'm being forgetful so I appreciate any help.....I need iphone for dummies!
    Thanks so much

  • (notation) dont know how to ask this question , but here we go

How do i change the tempo of a song without adjusting the actual tempo?
    heres why:
im composing songs in a tempo that sounds great by ear, but i need to decrease each value of each note in half so it can be in a 1/2 time tempo for my musicians to read easier.
if the song sounds great at 100bpm, i want to compose it at 50bpm, so theres not that many rests, and other values harder to read.
the only reason i need to do this is to make it easy to read for my readers, and remember , i can't read notation, just "midi blocks".
sorry about the vague explanation, i just dont have the theory.

Musical scores (which I assume you mean) don't work like that.
There is no 'tempo' value like BPM.
You just play the notes faster or slower - the time notation in musical scores has nothing to do with the 'speed' of the piece. It just tells the musician the 'type' of rhythm or pulse of each bar/section.
This really isn't the place to go into Musical Score theory, but what you are asking doesn;t make any sense because you are comparing apples with pencils.
What I think you are asking is that once you have composed your BPM arrangement then you convert this to a musical notation and that is where your problem is?
If so, and again I am no expert, then simply reduce the BPm of the arrangement and then use the notation from that. Perhaps someone else understand what he is trying to do. After all if you are reading notation, that is all you are doing, reading notation. It's like a book with words, you can read them as slow or as fast as you like. There are no rules except the grammar and that is what the 'time signature' and notation is, just grammar.
Does that make sense or have i really missed the boat here?

  • Yes I know many have asked the question - but what is the solution ?

Trying to open the PGATOUR.com site I get a "mime type application/x-mplayer2" plug-in not installed - and cannot therefeore run the videos on the site.

As I just used my money to get my macbook pro (1st mac)it sort of get to me that I get this issue.
    All help greatly appreciated !!!

Did you click on the help in the video portion of the page, following is from there.
    PGA
    "Download The Latest Players
To give you the best possible broadband viewing experience, PGATour.com uses only the latest Microsoft and Real Networks technology.
Either the free Windows Media Player 9+ or free RealOne or Real 10 video player is required to watch video. If you are unable to view PGATour.com multimedia, click on the icons below to download the latest player of your choice.
    * Live video not supported in Real
    Mac Compatibility
Either Firefox 1.x* (w/ Real only), Netscape 7.2 (w/ Real only) or Safari* (w/ Real only) is required for video playback.
*If Firefox is installed after Real, the playlist will not function; the playlist is not supported in Safari.
    Back To Video"
Hope that helps answer your question.

  • Going to bring back and old question but good one re:effects

I can't seem to find any more recent posts on the problem of the roughness of the background effects in ichat. When I try and put myself on let's say the roller coaster background I only see parts of my face and body. If you look at the keynote.. it is flawless..
Any new developments on this issue?

    Lighting is the key.
Your real background should be as flat in colour as you can manage.
Your chair for instance should not be the same colour as your clothes.
Overhead lighting that is fairly close can flare off your hair.
