I know its been asked before, but really, where is the restore button????!!

OK clever people... lets get this straight:
I start up itunes (updated, downloaded this morning)
I plug in ipod
Then i click on my ipod in the source list
I then see all my music appear in a long greyed out list
AND, where is the summary tab? What is the SUMMARY TAB?
Where is the restore button? It is NOT there.
Really!
Can someone screen dump me itunes with the restore button present, so i can actually see that it does exist?!?!?!!?
Dazed and Confused
(but still love my ipod!!!!)

I have iTunes 6.0.5 and I have the iPod updater on the Start menu under iPod.

  • Sure its been asked before but please can someone help re transfer old ipod

    Hello,
I appreciate this has probably been asked loads of times before but could someone "in the know" please tell me the easiest way to sort my dilema!!
I have a 2nd gen ipod & 1st gen ipod touch which were both on my old PC on seperate user accounts. I have since left my wife & she has the PC (we're still amicable!!) which contains both itunes accounts. That left me debating what to do as ideally I didn't want to be going back to hers to do my music management! To make things easy both the audio jack & dock connector broke on my touch meaning the repairs would have been the same as the cost of a new ipod classic so I went for the latter & set up a new itunes account on my laptop. Problem is I would like all of my old music on my new ipod as I had approx 4000 songs on the 2ng gen & 3500ish on my touch. Is there an easy way to get all of that music over to my new laptop & subsequently my new ipod without losing whats on my new ipod/itunes now?
Thank you to anyone who can help me with this.
    Ben

    Hey there,
One solution is to copy all the songs currently on your iPod to your new iTunes library. There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes.
It all depends on if you have a Mac or PC with how you copy your music over. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your new computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer." From there, restore your iPod and sync it with your new library. I did notice you did not want to go this route though.

  • Time machine full (yes, I know its been posted before but I have no answer)

I have a macbook with 80GBhd, my time machine drive is a USB 80GB drive. I have 15GB free on my local machine and TM has 6.67.
So its telling me that it needs 10.4GB to complete its backup.... and is no longer backing my drive up. I want to say "Hey, Time Machine, go ahead and delete some of my older backups, its cool, I get it."
But that just isn't an option. What am I supposed to do? Go out and get a NAS device? Maybe a couple of TB would be enough to satisfy time machine?
    Thanks

I see. I have a 120GB, I'll use it in its place. How then, do I move my current backup to my new backup drive? Can I just copy it?
And, wow, TM *****. You would think that it could make the best of what is available. Fine, I don't have enough room to go back a few days, maybe when my drive is full, I can only go back 1 day.
Brian, I've used Carbon Copy Cloner for years [http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.htm]
It's 'Donationware' - and worth a donation, it transparently uses Terminal/UNIX commands to do its stuff, has lots of lovely simple options- including the optional creation of a well-compressed but OS bog-standard SPARSEIMAGE disk image file of your Volume, supports the iPod:iTunes synchronization, will do fast block-level disk-to-disk clones etc. etc. and has UNIX-stndard syncing built in .. thru RSYNC...
The amazing thing about the SPARSEIMAGE format (well, amazing until you understand the 'why') is that it can very easily turn 120 gig into 90 : and the bulk of the reason turns out to be one of the 'usuals': allocation blocks.. as you no doubt know, the Mac - like all computers allocates space for file in minimum units: Blocks.. - a bit like writing a book but having to write it 10 pages at a time and having to actually use the ten pages... so, if the block size if 4 K (usually is on a Mac), eenif you only WRITE 500 bytes, the file will be allocated about 4k.. wasting 3.5KB (get info on a small file to see this: it'll say something like 4KB on Disk (512 bytes)).
On most systems but particularly with the Mac OS, you can have a LOT of small files (most of them are hidden from view inside other things - like, say applications which are really a special kind of directory or folder(show contents & browse about).. also prefs /plist files, small READMEs...) On a reasonable size disk it's not all that unusual to have 4 or 500,000 files. In 'Native format, 100 of those 500Byte files will take up 400KB. On a sparseimage (or in a zip or similar) the same 100 files will take 1/8th the space.
    Hard to get better ,...

  • I am sure its been asked before, but  "Convert SWF to F4V?"

Our web developers are going to start using a new player for the videos that we are creating in Captivate 5. The problem that we have is that a number of the projects for a number of our projects were lost, is there anyway to convert some of these old swf files into the F4V format? We can re export those that we already have, but there are a number that are still SWF and the new player is not handling these properly.
It seems like the two answers that I run into the most are:
    A. It is not possible becase SWF files are not really videos.
    B. A post by a bot about some generic multimedia converter with an X in the title, because X's are cool.
If there is a way I would love to know what it is.

    Please see whether this helps:

I know this has been asked before But I Deleted 10 mths worth of Bookmark folders, Cant use Undo & havent backed up (live & learn) Someone posted do a restore from "Import & Backup" My listing in Restore is only 2010-6-29 back to 2010-6-22. Is this the way to go to retrieve as much as possible or is there another solution?

Those dates are when a backup was automatically made by Firefox, not dates when you saved specific bookmarks. Try restoring the backup from the day before you deleted all those bookmarks. It will restore the entire backup file - not just what you deleted, you will lose any bookmarks that you saved after the date of the file you restore.

  • I know this has been asked before, but...

I'm having trouble converting a mono audio track to a stereo one. I know you're supposed to extract the audio and open it in QT and export it in stereo, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm selecting "Export: Sound to AIFF" and "Use: 44.1kHz Stereo." I know I've successfully done this before, but I can't seem to do it this time. Any help? Thanks.

    Jeff,
Is the problem that you only have sound coming out of one speaker? If so, you've already got stereo. It's just that your audio is only on one of the two tracks in your stereo pair.
So what you really need to do is export to mono.

  • I'm sure its been answered before but i can't see it.

i've only had my ipod 2 weeks and i've never used itunes before. i was lovin the ease of it all the transfering of files, syncing of itunes-ipod.
But everytime i play my ipod it either skips halfway through a song or it turns itself off.i've reset twice and forced sync's all to no avail.
Reading these disussions i think it's because the files are not in ACC format. How do i change my 5300 songs in 1 go? or do i need to them 1 at a time? or do i delete and start again? and will this affect any albums i've bought from itunes?
    your help would be appreciated.

In iTunes go to edit/select all, then when the items in the library are highlighted in blue choose edit/delete. This will remove all the items from your library and give you the option of moving them to the trash or recycle bin where you can empty it.
You say the files are MPEG files but that doesn't tell us much because they can be aac or mp3 (mp3 is MPEG layer 3 and aac is MPEG layer 4).
Before you start afresh, use the edit/preferences/general menu in iTunes and there go to 'import settings'. From there you will able to choose what encoder you prefer (aac or mp3
or even Apple Lossless which will give excellent sound quality, but at a file size that is much larger than mp3 or aac, so the trade off here is not as many songs will fit on your iPod) and the bitrate settings. The higher the bitrate, the better the sound quality but of course a higher bitrate will take up more space on your computer hard drive or iPod.
You should probably start by encoding a piece of music you are familiar with, in either mp3 or aac at something like 192kbps, listen to it, then try again at different bit rates, both lower and higher, to see if you can hear a difference in sound quality.

If you can’t hear the difference in sound quality between various bitrates, then the lower one will suffice, and you can store more songs on your iPod. Try this in both encoding formats. You could encode the same song several times in iTunes under a slightly different name (just edit the song in iTunes and add the bitrate after the song title), transfer these songs to your iPod and do some comparative listening. Then you can make an informed decision about which format/bitrate is best for you.
Yes it’s time consuming, but much better to rip your cds at decent sound quality now, rather than decide much later that you are not satisfied, and have to rip them again.
A song of the same length, encoded at the same bitrate, gives an almost identical file size whether it be encoded in aac or mp3.

Where the space saving issue comes in is because many people say that if you encode a song at 128kbps in aac format, then the sound quality is as good as the same song encoded at 160 or 192kbps in mp3 format, therefor using the aac version at a lower bitrate gives a smaller file size and allows you to store more songs on your iPod.
AAC better than MP3? Well that's a matter for your ears. Everyone has an opinion, but you should listen for yourself and don't let anyone tell you what to use.

  • I know it's been asked before but ..

    Hello everyone,
I've scoured this forum pretty much all day yesterday and found bits and pieces of the answer I was looking for. Honestly, I'm just not good with HTML.
I have a service that will stream my videos.
I can LINK to them from a page in IWEB and that works fine. You click the link and a NEW QT movie window opens. What I'd really like to happen is to have the movie open in a new web page. This way I have control of where the movie is and what the background looks like.
I've only been able to get this to work (quite easily) if I drag the movie into the page and of course it will upload to the MAC server (and stream slow and expensive).
I found the Make REF program and that's where I get stuck.
Is there a tutorial with details somewhere?
    Thanks

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It may be more difficult than need be but I guess the
question is, can it be done.
The answer to your question is a definite "YES! It can be done."
There are lots of reasons to link to content instead of duplicating content on your own server. A dedicated streaming video server is capable of hosting and delivering video content much quicker and at much higher quality. By linking to the content as an embedded object, you also do not use your own bandwidth to host and deliver the content. Plus, with a streaming server, you get real streaming...no real "downloading" of the content to a viewer's machine before display.
If you were to host the content on your own server, you'd probably want to decrease the hit to your bandwidth usage. This means compressing the video and decreasing the quality below that which you'd get from the dedicated streaming server.

And as mentioned, turn off caps lock.

  • Media Encoder, yes I know its been covered b4 but still doesn't work

    I'm having the typical
"Encoding Failed. Could not read from the source" and I've tried the things explained here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407106.html. The catch is, this is a brand new install of Adobe Production Suite on a brand new computer. It was working perfectly fine for about a month or so, but then one day, nothing. No updates were run and no new software installed. I've a few other things that some members have posted but still nothing works. Very frustrating because I do this for work and have deadlines. Any one have any ideas. The only thing I can think that it could possibly be is that I upgraded to Flash 10 about a week b4 the problems started occurring. Otherwise, it doesn't work on files that have been moved around a little bit but "relocated" when asked where the files are, but it also doesn't work on files that have stayed put the whole time.
    -Drew Jensen

Details...hmm... all of the adobe products have been updated to the 4.2.something, whatever is the newest version. Lets see... i7 920 w/ 12GB ram, 3HDD (1 scratch, 1 OS, 1 data). Windows 7 Ult. 64-bit (no available updates).
Some details of the problem... I was using handbrake to rip some marketing material and was able to edit them in PPro, but as soon as I tried to encode them, that when the problems started, I assumed that it was because of the file format that I encoded with in handbrake. Anyways, I had to edit the video in Windows Movie Maker, then took the WMV and dropped it into Media Encoder and was able to encode to the proper media format then. Anyways, I got the side project done, then went back to my projects. I edit interviews on the green screen, encode alpha channel, and throw them up on websites. So I did my normal stuff, but now when I encode, or try, I always get the error from media encoder listed below.
    - Source File: C:\Users\djensen\AppData\Local\Temp\Mike Ponce.prproj
    - Output File: C:\Users\djensen\Desktop\MPonce_return.flv
    - Preset Used: WorkPreset
    - Video:
    - Audio:
    - Bitrate:
    - Encoding Time: 00:42:41
    11/23/2009 1:35:25 PM : Encoding Failed
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted.
I had moved the first video I tried editing after the side project, but any videos that were in their place before all this happened are getting the same error.
That's all the details that I can think of. Thanks for direction Harm, sometimes when you're stressed we forget the most important things eh?

  • I know - Its been asked a million times

But, Can I delete my itunes library on my hard drive and not lose the songs on my iPod Nano ???
I downloaded all my CDs to itunes library and transfered them to my Ipod Nano, but someone told me if I was to delete the library it will also erse my iPod is this true???
I need to make more room on hard drive for more CDs???

The various shells and hard covers like the inCase really offer no protection other than minor scratch resistance.  They offer no impact protection at all really.  I am a fan of the Booq vyper series of padded semi-rigid sleeves and have used them with my last 3 MBPs when carrying them in a backpack or briefcase.  There are other good sleeves as well, but my own experience is with Booq and I would recommend them.
If actually backpacking in the boonies, I might still want something even more rigid to avoid other things in a large pack from pressing into or on the flat top or bottom of any laptop in the pack. A soft or even padded semi-rigid sleeve will not keep a laptop from flexing or bending if weight or objects in the pack pushes hard enough against it.  People have been known to crack screens using soft sleeves in backpacks and forgetting that a book edge or some other hard object pressing on or against the laptop will indent or flex the top case enough to crack the glass.
