I know.. not another film look question, but here is goes...

Hi all i hope you can help me here.
Im used to doing safety, corporate, induction videos so Ive never been interested in getting the "film look" But now Ive got a music video to do and i really don't want it to look interlaced.
Now i did some test on my HVX200 25p, and read up on it a little. Which brought me to my question.
I know that when shooting with real film cameras AND HD 25p cameras there is the rule not to pan very fast because it becomes jittery. But when i did my tests outside with my HVX200 25p PAL on a tripod (no panning) my footage seem a whole lot more jittery that film movies i see on tv. Its so jittery i cant use the footage! im to scared to do the music video on 25p.
So now i want to know, am i doing something wrong? Is the shutter speed or the way you capture in FCP got anything to do with the jittery? Or is 25p just that jittery?
Another question. Does anybody have some tips to get a better look and feel to my music video? plug ins? or whatever?
Thanks so much for your replies.
Andre Meyer

Hi Meyer,
The reason I said your video still looks jittery is because you have not graded or used any additional adaptors on your cam. Turning on a progressive shutter alone will just make your VIDEO look like 24/25P video! The movement is greatly exaggerated! The point I was trying to make is that once you have graded your footage and if you are lucky enough to use a 35mm adaptor, much of that jitteriness (if that’s a word?!) will not be so noticeable. Remember, if it goes away completely, you are back to square one almost! Its about how acceptable you can get with the 3 components I was talking about in my previous post.
I dont own an HVX200, but I have a V1E (not as good as the HVX200) and I find the cinema Gamma not that great as a default.. I have to tweak it quite a lot to achieve the all important contrast and saturated colours. As for your HVX, just have a play until u get a look u like. The Cinema Gammas on the Cheaper Canons are dreadful and make the cam lose all their contrast! I guess this varies a lot with the mid-priced prosumer cams?!
You don’t need to own a 5D MkII (an ergonomic disaster in my opinion unless u have the full rail kit!) to have that 35mm DOF control. There are quite a few 35mm adaptors out there that have attachments for many types of video cameras. There are users in this forum I think that use these types of adaptors with the HVX200’s. However, such equipment is not cheap.. and of course a good quality stills lens’s are not exactly cheap either!
So to summarise:
1. Use a progressive frame rate 24/25P
2. Colour Grade to film... Best bet is to use Apple Colour... this is a really good colour corrector which has various preset that’s you can tweak and work pretty good as the film look. Of course you will need to experiment to get the effect u want. Alternatively, you can use Magic Bullet Looks.. which can be use used as a Plug-in to FCP, and is like Apple Colour on Steroids! It doesn’t offer the same amount of control as Color, but has some really interesting presets that can be easily tweaked.. and the good things is, this is all done without leaving FCP.. so its quick.
3. If you want to go the whole way and go for a 35mm adaptor.. then do your home work. Do you currently own a select of still lenses? Canon L series or Nikon Pro series? Of course u don’t need the pro lenses, but in this set up the quality of your stills lens becomes really critical! Take a look on YouTube and see the effect these adapter give, they can be quite amazing! Be prepared to spend over £2500 for the adaptor alone!
4. And of course, remember technique when shooting like this.. these adaptors do stop down your camera, you will probably have less light to play with. When u r tracking etc, DOF is really critical and can be difficult to master at first.
I don’t have any 35mm adapter, i try to achieve the film look by using steps 1 and 2..the result, well... its ok but often means I have to mess about with camera distances sometimes to achieve a decent DOF. Swings a roundabouts!

  • (notation) dont know how to ask this question , but here we go

How do i change the tempo of a song without adjusting the actual tempo?
    heres why:
im composing songs in a tempo that sounds great by ear, but i need to decrease each value of each note in half so it can be in a 1/2 time tempo for my musicians to read easier.
if the song sounds great at 100bpm, i want to compose it at 50bpm, so theres not that many rests, and other values harder to read.
the only reason i need to do this is to make it easy to read for my readers, and remember , i can't read notation, just "midi blocks".
sorry about the vague explanation, i just dont have the theory.

Musical scores (which I assume you mean) don't work like that.
There is no 'tempo' value like BPM.
You just play the notes faster or slower - the time notation in musical scores has nothing to do with the 'speed' of the piece. It just tells the musician the 'type' of rhythm or pulse of each bar/section.
This really isn't the place to go into Musical Score theory, but what you are asking doesn;t make any sense because you are comparing apples with pencils.
What I think you are asking is that once you have composed your BPM arrangement then you convert this to a musical notation and that is where your problem is?
If so, and again I am no expert, then simply reduce the BPm of the arrangement and then use the notation from that. Perhaps someone else understand what he is trying to do. After all if you are reading notation, that is all you are doing, reading notation. It's like a book with words, you can read them as slow or as fast as you like. There are no rules except the grammar and that is what the 'time signature' and notation is, just grammar.
Does that make sense or have i really missed the boat here?

  • I really dont know how to explain this but here it goes. Idk how this happend but i want to somehow get my music from my ipad onto my new computers itunes. The problem is that my ipad is authorized on a broken pc which is authorized with an old apple id.

    Hi
Alright im not quite  sure  how this happend but here it goes. I am trying to sync all the content from my ipad to and new computer. But i get a message that my ipad is authrorized on another computer. But the problem is that my old computer is broken. I also think that the old computer was authorized with my ipad from my old apple id which i do not know the username or password. So how will i be able to authorize my ipad on my new computer?

Wow my luck. Unfortunally my backup file is corrupt :/. i was thinking is it possible to put my music on my computer via copytrans or other software then transfer my purchases on my ipad like apps. Then restore my ipad so that the other authorization is gone then transfer my music to itunes then register my ipad to my new computer then sync? I could also put my music on disc or something else instead of a transfer software if that would work.

  • Oh no not another display question but here we go

I bought the new mb and did not really notice the display to be horrible mine I am satisfied with, but yes there is a but. A friend of mine wanted to switch to mac after all kinds of issues with windows another story any way he looked at my display and said this is horrible I asked what is wrong he pointed out that all of the capitol letters are fuzzy at the top and he is correct if you open word or excel or even on web pages they are fuzzy has anyone else noticed this? We went to the apple store to get his new machine the mbp 15" and he looked at them and noticed the very same thing on all of the machines in the store iMacs, mba but not the 17"mbp he looked at my 17" mbp 2.33 and did not see this but it is a matte screen. Does anyone have any idea why it would be on these new screens is it just a glossy screen issue?

I am not sure what you are experiencing, but I believe the pixel pitch on the 17" are lower, therefore resulting in a more smooth display. The pixel pitch, however, is still very low on the 13" compared to other displays, so you would have to sit really close to the screen in order to see each pixel.
Are you new to Mac? If so, it may be the different kind of font smoothing that is in the Mac OS X. They higher correct smoothness instead of readability. I do also prefer the Windows Clear Type font smoothing - at least for smaller fonts. While larger fonts seem to appear nicer in Mac OS X. Also (non-true type) fonts are better smoothed out in Mac OS X.
If you are looking at small font, the font smoothing might be turned off. In order to (almost) deal with the problem, you could lower the font smoothing size in System Preferences under Appearance.

  • I know this is a common question - but is there a way to connect a USB pen drive to the iPad? (See details)

Basically, I just bought a Nexus 7 after growing impatient waiting for the iPad mini.  But the Nexus has a fault, and I'm taking it back next week.  I'm wondering whether to get my money back, or just get another - because it's a pretty good device!
My major big thing about it, is that I can plug a USB pen drive into it with a OTG cable and either just stream pictures, documents or movies - or save them to the Nexus for viewing without a dangly wire to annoy me.  It's great!  However, being an Apple fan - an iPad mini (if it comes out!) would be simpler, because it would sync to iCloud etc.  whereas obviously my Nexus 7 doesn't do this at all.  The only iCloud factor I can access is my mail.  Which isn't a problem, just a prefference.
So, with current iPads - is there a way, without jailbraking the device, to say stream movies to the device through a USB pen drive/external HDD, and save them to the iPad?
I've seen ways on YouTube but thought it was best to ask here.
If this was possible, I'd swap the Nexus for the iPad mini straight away - the Nexus 7 is fantastic!  No problem with it, if it wasn't for iCloud, I'd keep that.
Oh, and as a closing question on the iPad mini/Apple Maps - the Nexus 7 lets you download offline maps, and also you have a GPS which is used even when not on wifi - do you think this will be likely on an iPad mini? I can't see it myself.
It's a sad day for me, when I start to think Google may still have the upperhand on 7" tablets, even after the iPad mini is released.  I might even wait for the Second generation (if it exists!) - just because I for some reason never like first generation things from Apple.
But anyway, that's a lot of questions and info!
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • Not so much a question but admission of defeat

Over the years, mainly as a musician, I have had to listen to the Mac/PC war and the misinformation traded back and forth. The usual one is how much better/faster/cooler/ etc... the Mac is compared with the fruits of Bill Gates' womb, the Windows PC.
Since 2007 I have bought a new iMac in 2007 which had to go back to the Apple Store twice to have a new motherboard fitted but at least while it was still in warranty; a 2 year old secondhand Macbook Pro (2006) in 2008 which has died with the nVidia GPU video chip issue just 1 month after the extended 4 year warranty period that Apple put in place to recall the million plus video chips affected. I'm being told that the cost of repair would exceed a new i5 laptop.
Also an iPod Nano 4th generation that I bought my wife 2 years ago has also died with the "known" white screen of death (look it up) where the screen whites so much it is impossible to see the menu items even though the device is still working.
The Mac 'thing' in the music world is because nearly all top studios used Protools HD or TDM fronted by an Apple Mac which only had to display the software on scree as all of the DSP processing was done on the PT digidesign/Avid chips so the Mac CPU had little to do - hence the reason it appeared to run seemlessly.
Am I just an unfortunate Mac buyer or are there loads of you out there suffering in silence not wanting to say that I've spent good money on over priced toys that look and feel good?
My own small studio runs on an Intel Core Quad PC from ASUS, bought in 2006 and has never let me down.
I recently cleared out a cupboard and found a Dell Latitude Laptop bought in 1994 and still going strong running Windows 95!!
I'm sorry but my experience in the Mac world has been just dire and there is no part of the 4 year experience that in any way I would or could recommend Apple products to anyone - but hey they look really cool.

Apple products consistently score better in satisfaction survays and have fewer returns and repairs.
As a 20 plus Apple user I can agree with that, however Apple changes things so much that one doesn't get the value for the higher money spent in return.
While Microsoft still supports the 10 year old XP and 5 year old Vista, Apple has shunned support for Leopard 10.5 that was released 4 years ago, then supported it for only a mere 2 years.
A Dual Processor PowerMac G5 is about as half as powerful as today's quad core Mac's, still a very usable machine and a hefty investment, however Apple issues no security or stability updates for it's 10.5 operating system.
10.6 is a Intel only operating system, so PPC users can't upgrade.
And 10.7 ditches Rosetta, which allowed a PPC programs to run on a 10.6 Intel Mac.
Am I just an unfortunate Mac buyer or are there loads of you out there suffering in silence not wanting to say that I've spent good money on over priced toys that look and feel good?
In the course of 10 years, I've bought a pricey Dual Processor G5 with a 30" monitor, a Intel Core 2 Duo 15" and now a 17" MacBook Pro (for 10.6) for total apx $12,000 in hardware and about $3000 in software. (Another $8000 in music)
My friend bought one Dell Pentium Tower with XP ten years ago for $1200 and another $300 in software and now is looking around for a new machine as XP is finally taking it's toll. He wants a laptop to take with him on road trips.
So I recommneded he get a Windows 7 i5 or i7 laptop for about $500-$600 and let me slap a new 7,200 RPM hard drive and Linux Like-XP on the old Dell which will make it like a brand new machine again.
Did you really think I would recommend a Mac laptop that is basically the same hardware for $1500 including AppleCare and tax, suffer with the same fate I did in these last few years with all the hardware and operating system changes, just to let Apple ditch him on the side of the road in two years?
I don't recommend Mac's to ANYONE anymore, except to the very wealthy with money to blow where being stylish is more important than practicality and even then I'm winding up putting Windows 7 on it via Bootcamp because there is always a program they must have and there is no Mac version.
So out of 100 clients, I'd say 20 are on Mac's and 50% of those are direct booting into Windows, hardly touch OS X.
But they can tell all their rich and/or liberal friends they use a Mac. LOL

  • Another Dynamic header question, but this one is tricky. help!

I have a prompt that has values like
    Version1
    Version2
    Version3
Depending on the version selected, two general value columns called VALUE1 and VALUE2 need to have their headers changed.
for example, if Version1 is selected then Value1 column heading should be Budget and Value2 heading should be Forecast.
How can i achieve this? It seems a repository variable will not work. Also, I tried using one prompt based on another prompt but got stuck.

    You can do this
prompt based on other prompt and writing a case statement
Create a pv for pmt1 and write a case statement for  prompt2 passing the variable from first prompt
case when '@{pv1}'='version1; then 'budget'... to the second pmt(pv2)
once done, on the dashboard page edit the dashboard properties and we can put this second pmt as a dashboard filter and save the dashboard page
now on the report column header use '@{pv2}' .Thats it.
It should work.I have done this already!!
    Good luck.

  • I know it's an old question, but are we ever going to see network indexing on x64 Windows?

I know it's been asked time and time again, but I would like to know if anyone knows of any plans to allow non-Windows Server network locations (such as NAS devices, Linux boxes, and storage plugged into supporting routers) to be indexed and
used in libraries without having to store the mass of data locally on the device.
I already know that you can add the network locations to libraries without them being indexed although doing so removes the ability to search by meta data, and also seems to have inherent issues with Modern-UI apps: it seems as though apps such as Photos
and Music ignore any network locations in libraries, presumably because they're not indexed.
I'm aware of an add-in designed for Windows 7 that allows UNC paths to be indexed, although this is only for x86. Does anyone know of any plans to implement this feature in Windows 8 / x64.
If anyone from MS actually reads this please hear me out- this has a genuine logical consumer-focused benefit. Windows 8 is pretty much Microsoft acknowledging the changes in the form factors being used by consumers, with users moving to mobile devices with
less storage capacity. Now surely in such devices having full support to index and access network locations is a no-brainer. Especially seeing as Modern-UI applications seem incapable of using non-indexed network locations at all.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

I second this.  I've just spent two hours trying to work round this with symbolic shares and the like.
re: If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.
    Surely preposterous is the justification...
"However this is now not supported or available for Windows
7 due to the following concerns:
----Increased network traffic when multiple clients would indexing the same share."
    followed by "Please
    try following suggestions:
    a. Enable the clients for offline files (CSC). This will cache the files on the client and allow the clientsindex to index the
    content locally. "
Err, so copying a Video media file over the network to a local cache is the proposed solution to decrease network traffic?????
"behaviour by design" isn't an answer to end this thread.  What everyone is telling you Microsoft is the DESIGN IS BAD, so PLEASE CHANGE IT.
    If only they would listen.
