I launched my first Flex project.

So I launched my first Flex project yesterday. I wanted to
say thank you to everyone who has helped me on these forums. Here
it is if you would like to check it out
http://www.kranichs.com/mothers-rings
please tell me what you think.
Thanks!

Very cool indeed.
I added it to my ChikaraDev directory of rich internet
applications:
ChikaraDev
Directory of Rich Internet Applications
It could use a progress bar though. The screen where it will
appear is blank till it loads. But very nice use of Flex!

  • First Flex Project - Skinning Component?

    I am working on my first flex project for the college that I work for.  We are making a large touch screen into a display for all of the awards that we have given out over the years and taking the old plaques off the walls.
    I want to iterate over a list of names and years that the awards were given so that each instance of the award looks like it is on it's own little plate.  I'm just imitating the plaques that were on the wall that had a big discription and name of the plaque on one plate and all the winners of the award on their own little plates beneath it.
    Is this what I would a component skin for?  I'm sorry if this is to much of a newbie question.

  • My first flash project

    Hello, a few weeks ago I have launched my first flash project: logotypemaker.com
    Please let me know what I need to improve in second version.
    Thanks.

    Rob, thanks for your input.
    You're right, I hadn't checked it in various browsers, and that seems to reveal some issues...
    After checking the file in different browsers, just as you say, it works just fine for me in Chrome, but in Safari, (my default browser), that's where I see the heart patient inconsistency, and in Firefox, the flashes seem stable, but I hear no audio.
    Sigh.  This confirms what I suspected when it comes to entering the world of HTML5 development...  it looks like we're all facing a new gigantic set of headaches in trying to get our work to perform as expected across the myriad browsers.
    I guess we've been pretty spoiled with Flash up to now, exporting once and feeling confident that it will work consistently in most browsers.  I would have thought HTML5 would be a little further down the road by now to being more consistent from browser to browser, but it looks like it's got a long way to go if an animation this simple has this much trouble performing.  : /
    Is there an approach to this I may be overlooking?  If anyone has more experience in this Flash to HTML5 conversion, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

  • Flex Project Management

    Hi,
    I am planning to build a flex project with a small group of people. So, I am thinking to have one main project to load all the component (SWF) in swf loader, so that I can have the component to be distributed to everyone. Here I want to ask:
    1. Besides local connection, what is the other best, fastest, and most stable way to have the main application to communicate with child application loaded via swf loader?
    2. As each person may working on their own part, how to set up the project so that they can easily debug their part with the main application during the development?
    3. The project will be deploy in both Air and web format. How to share the code base for both development so that we are easier to grow and maintain the app?
    Thanks. Please advise if you have better way for group development.

    take a look at the first part of this video where he talks about different architectures
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2010-develop/flexactionscript-30-architecture-and-dependency -injection-frameworks-overview/
    you also might find this useful. Some example case studies for web/mobile apps, the same principle could be applied to web/desktop apps

  • ActionScript class being run by mistake in Flex project

    I have a Flex project where my main MXML file is set as the
    one and only application file and is also set as the default file.
    I also have an ActionScript class in the project that extends
    Sprite. It is _not_ set as an Application file.
    When I have the ActionScript class selected, if I hit run or
    debug, FB3 creates a new launch configuration for it and tries to
    run the AS file instead of the default application MXML file.
    Needless to say, this is really annoying as it means I have
    to select the main MXML file before hitting debug/run every time.
    Is this a bug or feature? (Feels like a bug).
    Thanks,
    Aral

    Hi Aral,
    Can you please log it in our public bug system:
    http://bugs.adobe.com/flex?
    It'd be great if you can provide more info to the bug e.g.
    reproducible steps, platform, FB version (Plugin or Standalone).
    thanks,
    Sharon

  • Bad news if I can't debug cfcs in a flex project

    I'm trying to debug a cfc in a flex project Coldfusion builder installed as a plugin is Flash builder 4
    But I'm getting a message saying:
    File does not belong to a coldfusion project. Apply Coldfusion nature to the project to which the file belongs.
    This is bad news if I can't debug cfcs in a flex project

    Here are the targets (simplified) that are specific to the cfml export.  The real build.xml reads a build.properties file for the variables, and main runs the flex build first:

  • Help Configuring PHP Server with new Flex project.

    Hi,
    I'm curious if someone can help me with a frustrating problem.
    While creating a new flex project, I can't seem to validate the configuration of the php server. I keep getting the message: "Cannot access the web server. The server may not be running, or the web root folder or root URL may be invalid."
    I'm running MySQL, PHP and Apache 2.2. These program have worked indepentally without flex, so I know the program isn't with the install of the stack.
    For my web root I entered: "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs" the location where I installed Apache
    And for root url I'm using "http://localhost"
    The other wierd part of this is that even though Flex would not validate this connection, I went ahead and started the project anyway and made a succesful connection to mysql, obviously though when I tried to launch the project it couldn't connect to the server.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated because flex is pretty much useless to me unless I can figure out how to connect with php and mysql.

  • Problem calling AS3 class's methods from Flex Project

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but after 2 days of Web
    searching and 2 books give up; I am a Java and c# programmer and am
    having problems calling AS3 classes (in packages) from Flex Builder
    2 Flex Projects; the AS3 classes work great as Flex Builder "AS3
    Projects", but when I try to use the classes in a Flex Builder
    "Flex Project" I am able to see and set their properties, but
    cannot see (through "code completion") their methods (unless the
    class extends another AS3 class; and in that case I can see the
    base class's methods). Here is the code:
    AS3 Example Class:
    package asText {
    public class CheckWord {
    public var strData:String;
    public var strAProperty:String;
    public var intAProperty:int;
    // Constructor
    public function CheckWord() {
    public function TestMethod():void {
    trace("test...");
    public function WordLength():int {
    var intLength:int = 0;
    trace(strData);
    intLength = strData.length;
    return intLength;
    } // From Method WordLength
    } // From Class CheckWord
    } // From Package asText
    The MXML code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="
    http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
    layout="absolute"
    width="442" height="488" horizontalAlign="center"
    verticalAlign="middle"
    backgroundGradientColors="[#c0c0c0, #c0c0c0]"
    xmlns:asTheText="asText.*"
    >
    <asTheText:CheckWord strData="Test words" />
    <mx:Panel title="Welcome to ........" width="337"
    height="393" horizontalAlign="center" verticalAlign="middle"
    layout="absolute" y="15" x="50">
    <mx:Text text="First Name" enabled="true" width="68"
    fontWeight="bold" x="27.25" y="36"/>
    <mx:TextInput id="txtFName" x="112.25" y="34"/>
    <mx:Text text="Last Name" enabled="true" width="68"
    fontWeight="bold" x="27.25" y="66"/>
    <mx:TextInput x="112.25" y="64" id="txtLName"/>
    <mx:Text text="email address" enabled="true" width="87"
    fontWeight="bold" x="17.25" y="96"/>
    <mx:TextInput width="189" id="txtEmail" left="112.25"
    top="94"/>
    <mx:Button id="butSubmit" label="Submit" x="95" y="194"
    click="asTheText:TestMethod();"/>
    ..............and so on ............
    All this does is give me an 1180 error:
    1180: Call to a possibly undefined method TestMethod.
    flexConveyMovie1.mxml

    Thanks, I have it working; I was not assigning an "ID" to the
    "MXML use of the class" (whatever the formal name for that is;
    like: <asTheText:CheckWord id="MyText" strData="The Data" />
    ) and then I was not referencing that ID in what I am refering to
    as calling methods for the Class; like:
    <mx:Button id="butTest" label="Test Function" x="39"
    y="208" click="MyText.TestMethod();"/>
    Also, I did some tests on this, and I am shocked that
    apparently neither of these two "uses"(?) of a custom AS3 class
    actually "call" the Class's constructor. Does that make sense or is
    that the result of how I am structuring this?

  • How did you get your first Flex developer job???

    Hi guys..
       I know it might not be relevant for this forum, but I am dying to know how you guys get your first flex developer job. I am actually more interested in your resume. What sort of skill did you guys put on your resume? Thanks for the reply....:D

    Started as a pure "Java/J2EE" dev.  Rebelled and added Flex to my skill set (since JSP is sin on par with 'AJAX frameworks'), started new project using Flex.
    In other words one way is to take ownership of a Java (or other) project, and force the bast... er, have your project team use Flex.   he he
    But this is the long path, of course.  To start off in Flex (besides the obvious of looking for it by name) you'd probably focus on UI design skills/experience and competing (but crummy and old) front-end technologies, and then lobby for the Flex SDK on any new projects that come along (assuming it's a good fit).  I suspect you'd have a tougher time if you're going into an organization which already has some late-generation RIA tech in use, such as Silverlight or GWT (bleh), but the ones still saying "JSP" or "AJAX" and any other associated legacy HTML-type technologies are soft targets.

  • Is there a way of working collaboratively on a flex project with a small project group?

    Is there a way of working collaboratively on a flex project with a small project group?
    I am part of a small group of developers who wish to work on a single flex project together. Is there a way to set up flex so that the project can be developed by multiple people at the same time. I have seen one thread out on the internet about working locally and then uploading to SVn but this is not an option in this case.
    Any ideas.
    Many thanks in advance
    Dave

    I would say that rushing into development without a source-control system will cost you more in the long-run. If your organisation is serious about developing software it then it needs to invest in the necesary infrastructure, so you should get that process kicked-off as soon as possible.
    In the interim you could set-up a source control server on one developer's machine or commandeer a spare machine to use as a temporary source control server. Just make sure you have it backed-up regularly. Or you could use one of the online source control services; many will support private repositories for a small fee.

  • Flex project vs. mxml application

    im totally new to flex and actionscript, coming from traditional web app development. ive been watching videos on lynda.com and it has gone well, but one thing it fails to mention and that i couldnt find in the forums or on google is the difference between creating a flex project and an mxml applciation. what's the difference?
    thanks!

    I don't know if you have  knowledge about java or C#.
    The project is a location where you collect all files that you need for your final application: mxml files, as filex, assets ....
    The mxml application is the mxml file that inherit mx:Application and is the main file of the project.
    Here is the start point of what you see in the browser.
    The red circle specify the project and the blue cicrle specify the mxml application.
    There is only one default mxml application in each project, but you can have many mxml files (that can be components) or mxml application that are applications.

  • Not able to create a new Flex project in Eclipse

    I am trying to use Flex Builder 3 eclipse plug-in for
    development. But while creating a new Flex project in eclipse, I'm
    getting the following error:
    Template template.jst.web has not bee defined.
    I am using Eclipse 3.3, and have installed the latest WTP
    updates. Can someone point out what I'm missing here?
    Thanks!

    Hi clsung,
    Do you get this error on every Flex Project you are trying to
    create or just on Java/J2EE projects? Flex Builder beta doesn't
    support WTP 2.0 but this shouldn't affect the other kind of
    projects.
