I like films / movies but am worried I might run out of space

I apologise, I may be asking the wrong category but I'm not a technology expert and couldn't quite decide in which category to put my question.
I have a macbook pro with a 500 GB hard drive, which is now half full. I'm a big fan of films but for some reason, don't ask me why, I like to download and own films rather than rent or stream. At the moment, I only watch films off my macbook but am thinking about buying the appleTV to watch them on a larger screen. I want to know is there a way of storing films off my macbook but which I can still watch, whenever I like, via apple TV. I'm keen to build up a large film library and don't like DVDs or BluRay but my computer will run out of space at some point.

Movies on your MacBook, that are in iTunes, can be viewed with Apple TV via Home Sharing.

*unselected "Sync music" from the appropriate tab. And iTunes warned: if you do this, we will delete every playlist and song on your iPod*
To change to manually managing an iPod you don't "unselect" sync music, you "select" manually manage songs and videos. If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod by checking the box beside "manually manage songs and videos" in the Summary tab and clicking Apply. Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod
I don't have any TV shows so I can't speak from experience here but looking at the TV tab it appears you can only sync shows, there's no manually manage option. Syncing would require that you keep the shows on your computer otherwise they would be removed from the iPod the next time you syncronised with iTunes.

  • Ipad 2 - 30gb and running out of space, but i don't have that many movies - can anyone help

ipad 2 - 30gb and running out of space, but i don't have that many movies - can anyone help?  How do i find a directory of files that I can manage (PC user)?
    thanks!

You might have to do some experimenting from iTunes on your computer.
Several months back, I had a phantom 5G of video.  I unchecked ALL video files and synced the iPad and the 5G was still there.  I was able to delete the 5G and bring it back by repeatedly unchecking and checking the "Sync Movies" box.
A "Restore" solved my problem.  Be forewarned that it's not quick:
Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • I have plenty of space on my harddrive but stil if i try to  imprort few pics i get an error message stating that my iphoto library disk is running out of space. I have only 137 MB worth of pictures; How to incease the size of my iphoto library?

I have plenty of space on my hard drive 1.5GB But still when I try importing some pictures in to Iphoto it tells me that the iphoto library is running out of space
How do i solve this problem so that I can import my pictures
    thanks

I have plenty of space on my hard drive 1.5GB
You do not have "plenty of space". You are facing a major crisis with a severe risk of dataloss unless you act very fast indeed. This is your first priority.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • TWO Itunes accounts Running out of space on each laptop. Moving one accont fully to NEW machine wit 3tb drive NAS. Can i move second mdeia libary to nas drive ?? Ie tow itunes libraries on NAS drive working independantly

Two I-Tunes libaries (Mine & My Wifes) Both Machines running out of space.
My FIX Moving All itunes account Libary etc to new PC with NAS 2tb drive (IOMEGA)or Seagate or LaCie or etc......
Can i copy the Bulky Library files ITUNEs from My Wifes laptop to the NAS drive ?
Is this easy to do ?
ALSO She will still have itunes on her laptop just none of the Bulky Library !
As the ITUNES program will be Pointed to her files (Library on NAS drive ) ?
If someone has done a walkthrough of something like this id really appreciate it?
LASTLY I did hear with itunes new Updates that it stops NAS Drives Streaming Media ? (SO is a NAS drive No use if apple are no allwing the streaming for itunes Server)

By default, the ITL is always on the C: drive.
SO it seems you moved yours to the exHD. Just moving it doesn't do anything, though...did you ever do a shift-start of itunes and use it as your library?
Pressing AND HOLDING the shift key until you get a prompt from ituens to choose a library ITL file.
I would do that now before you go any further, to make sure of which library files you want to use.
I would assume the one with the most recent date is the one you want.
iTunes uses the last library opened. You don't always have to do a shift-start, in other words.
However if at any point you start itunes without the exHD connected, it automatically goes back to the C: drive.
In that case, you WOULD need to do another shift-start to use the ITL on the exHD>
    It's option-start on a Mac, BTW.
You can move the whole folder over to your new MBP and do an option-start.
    Clear as mud?

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Itunes storage says i got 4172 photos, but i actually only have 1359 photos in my photo library. Im running out of space because of it.

i updated my iphone to ios8, but it needs 5 gb so i saved my photos to my windows pc and deleted everthing. When im finally updated, i synced my iphone to itunes and all my photos are saved to my phone which are 3000 photos (rounded) and so i screencaptured only 1000 photos so that it can be saved to my photo library and i un-synced my photos so that they are also deleted from my phone because i dont need them anymore. Now i am running out of space because the storage says i got 4172 photos but i only have 1359 showing in my photo library.

Open Settings->General->Date & Time.  Turn off Set Automatically & roll back the date a year.  Then open your photos app & the Recently Deleted folder.  The phantom photos should be there.  Tap Select & Delete All,
Now go back to Settings->General->Date & Time & toggle Set Automatically back on.
    Hope this helps!

My 8GB iPod touch is running out of space, but all I have is 177 songs with no apps, videos, or pictures.

Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than abount 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • I used a 3V card this is a credit card you top i used it on itunes bought a few apps but now that its after running out my itunes doesnt let me download free apps anymore and brings me to the billing info? how do i fix this

i used this card called a 3v card which is a credit card you top up everytime you top up in selected shops you are given a reciept on this dare is all the information you need like cvv codes and exipiry dats and all that everytime you purchase a reciept your issued with new details  i had 20 in my account bought a item off the icarbons for 13 euro so i had 7 left i said il purchase some apps for my ipod so i entred in all the details into my ipod i sucessfully bought items but now that the card is empty everytime i try and download a free app it says billing info wrong an rings me to the billing info page how can i fix this problem ?????

Part of the validation for credit cards is that they need to be registered to exactly the same name and address that you have on your iTunes account, which prepaid cards tend not to be. Do you have a proper credit card that you could use ? Or are iTunes gift cards available in your country so that you could try using them as your payment method ?
Until you have a valid payment method on your account and what you owe iTunes has been paid off then you won't be able to download any item from the store, including free apps (and updates to apps).

  • How do you move or can I move Itune folders (Movies), (TV Shows) and (Home Videos) to other internal hard drives (running out of space) on my computer's main hard drive and have Itunes recongize where they are?

I built my own computer which has 4 internal hard drives with 3 internal hard drives that are 3tb.  With my movies and tv shows, I need to know if I can move the Itunes folders (Movies, TV shows and Home Video's) and move each one of them to 3 seperate internal hard drives while Itunes can still find them to play with my apple tv.  Does anyone know how I can do it?

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes.  Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located.  There are other ways to move them if they are already added but they can be more involved and tricky.  If it's just one or two try:  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected

  • 2012 VDI Pool storage - move to different drive (I just ran out of space!) :-(

    Hi
I have 2012 R2 VDI host with approx 30 desktops in a single collection. The collection has the below setup:
What i have found is that when machines are ccreated they are being created on the C:\programdata\ drive of my hyper-v host. The settings of the hyper-v settings default paths are D:\VIRTUAL MACHINES\ however these seem to be being ignored.
How/Where do I specify the machines should be placed in D:\VIRTUAL MACHINES\? I think my problem is that the "local desktop creation location" (shown above) is perhaps "default", but i can't see how to change it to a path. its greyed
out. the PS command "Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration" doesn't seem to have that property exposed either....
    bah...
    Thanks
    Dave
    David Hood www.consilium-uk.com

    Hello,
same question here in our environment.
I am trying to Change the "local virtual Desktop creation Location" to a new drive (same RDVH/hyper-v host).
I can not find a way to move this. Is there no way to Change this Settings? Only recreate the pool?
Is there a way to Change the RDVH (Server replacement)?
With Windows 2012R2 hyper-v i have also "shared nothing" Migration. Is this usable for VDI?
Maybe somebody can answer the questions.
    Thank you
    Regards
    Marc

  • Time Machine running out of space but doesn't delete old backups

    First some context:
I am running Parallels Desktop on a 2011 iMac. The VM is on a partition that is excluded from Time Machine.
I have a second partition where I copy the VM every night using CCC. (This avoids TM backing up a large VM every hour).
TM says initial backup is 220 GB. I have a 1TB USB drive attached. So normally, this works fine.
This morning 100GB were copied to my Parallels Desktop partition. So TM should copy something in excess of 100GB during backup.
Currently, only 15GB are free on my backup volume. But TM doesn't try to delete old backups. It doesn't seem to recognize the size of the backup. Instead when it starts, it predicts about 1GB to backup. Then during backup the amount grows (note that no new data is changed during backup!) and it finally hits the wall at 15GB because the disk is full.
Any idea why TM doesn't figure out the real backup size?
Here's the log from TM Buddy:

  • Z10 Running Out of Space Need fix to move games and app to SD card

When the next OS updates come to do you think they will address SD card issue . Where we can move games to SD card as of right now we can't.
    I need more space

My guess is that you are not actually deleting the original raws from your internal hard drives and have lots and lots of crud around that you are not aware off so you should go through your internal drives with a fine-toothed comb. Don't forget to actually empty the trash when you delete! 1TB is more than enough disk space for storing the Lightroom catalog file, previews and some jpegs. 30.000 photos is really not that much. My main catalog  has >50.000 images in it with the raw files all stored on external hard drives. The catalog itself is on my internal 256 GB SSD HD that also houses the previews (so I can use it with the raw files offline) and the operating system as well as a lot of software (photoshop, office, iWorks, Aperture, etc.). It is more than enough space as it still has more than 150 GB free. I automatically back up everything, including the external HD that stores the raw images to separate external HDs stored in different places.

  • How do i move itunes to external hard drive to free up space on my imac

I keep running out of space on my imac (320mb)
I have my movies on a Lacie hard drive.
How do I put itunes on the hard drive?
    Thanks

iTunes has many components.  The two main ones are the application itself (which is what ones means when ones says "iTunes") and the library which is a set of files and folders.  I take it you want to move the iTunes library (you cannot run iTunes the application off a non-boot drive).
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
My one hesitation regarding the above is it sounds like you already have some things on the external drive and you have not shared with us the details of your setup.  You have already modified itunes from its standard behavior and this can sometimes introduce problems.

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?
