  • A little disappointed in quad

First let me say that I am a photographer and not a computer whiz. I peruse these forums trying to learn as much as I can. I recently switched from an "old" dual 2.0 powermac to a quad. Originally sucked in by Aperture and wanted a machine to run it faster. I have since decided that Aperture in it's present form is unusable to me, but certainly expected much increased performance with my Adobe Bridge / CS2 workflow.
    Previous G5 PM: dual 2.0, 3.5 g ram, ATI Radeon 9600 pro
Present quad: 6.5 g ram, geoforce 6600 (stock)
All external hard drives, etc. are the exact same as before. Photoshop configuration (scratch disk, ram usage, etc.) set exactly the same as before. Overall, the quad is definately much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? Basic things like "save for web" and "file close" (command + w) give a brief spinning beachball now where before they were instantaneous. Actions I use constantly actually take longer now. Filters (sharpening, blur, skin soften, etc.) do run a little faster but the most basic commands take longer????
I used the firewire apple transfer utility to move all software, etc. to the new quad. I use external drives to store all image files, etc. just the same as before.
Am I expecting too much difference? Photoshop not able to take advantage of extra processing or ram?? Comments?

You shouldn't be needing a scratch disk anymore, Tiger is supposed to override Photoshop CS2's RAM limit and give it all it needs. (only CS2 supposedly)
4GB is supposed to give 40% more performance than 2GB in a Quad.
So what I'm guessing is your using up your RAM for other things, widgets, other programs and now your swapping to your scratch disk, which if you need one, really needs to be the fastest thing possible because your replacing a drive I/O speed for RAM.
A RAID O pair of the fastest drives and the fastest interface you got. This would need to be a pair of 10,000 RPM external SATA drives with a large cache, preferably 16MB, like a pair of 150 GB Western Digital RaptorX's in some sort of external enclosure like a MiniG with a Sonnet PCI SATA card, which for the Quad isn't quite out yet.
However a pair of empty Firewire 400 external drives each with a direct connection to the Quad and RAID O'ed, might do the job cheaper for less performance.
The important thing is you need a separate channel to each drive, I don't know how many Firewire 800 ports there are on the Quad, but you would need two to use this interface at maximum speed.
Of course the problem comes up that your hogging all your ports, you just can't disconnect a RAID O set as a scratch disk at will either and expect PS to be nice to you.
But it would be just better to get more RAM and get done with it.
Overall, the quad is definitely much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? This is your scratch, boot or file drive doing this to you.
Mac OS X performs much better with a very fast, slim boot drive as it caches all the time. Western Digital is coming out with a 10,000 RPM, 16MB cache, 150GB internal SATA which will make a excellent boot/itunes/bare bones "home" drive for performance. With your files in new folders on another internal drive, like the stock or something faster.
I had to RAID O my two Raptors (74GB each) to get a little more space as I keep them less than 50% filled for maximum performance in Mac OS X. However it can be a bit risky and I clone once a week to a external drive with daily file backups.
Needless to say I don't see many beach-balls.
Now another thing is you got the stock video card, supposedly some processing is dumped to that, so that might be affecting performance.
Also you have to expect that PS CS2 isn't quite fully optimized for a Quad yet, it's are pretty recent hardware addition, and there is a lot of software being recoded at Adobe from Code-warrior (now obsolete) to X-Code for Universal Binaries.
Adobe might be standardizing their code based on a dual core, because most Mac's and PC's will be having that and it's easier to write once than to write a special version for Quads. Who knows? We will find out later I guess.
What's important is you got a monster computer at a great price, the software will have to catch up that's all. Just get more RAM so you have PS CS2 use it's 4GB needed and then make sure you get more to cover anything else you like to run at the same time. Run everything in RAM as much as possible without swapping to your boot drive or scratch disk.
I have some more performance and cloning info at my site, take a peak

  • A little disappointed and a lot happy

    Hi,
After looking through the Apple site yesterday I decided to find out what all the fuss was about and went to my nearest Apple retaier and bought the AppleTV.
The setup was easy (connected to network in seconds.
While syncing took a while (what did I expect when transferring 35GB across a wireless network!)
The graphics look sexy (no correct that actually, super sexy !), crisp and clear on my Plasma TV and was the first time I actually saw what my TV was capable of.
My music collection has arrived over intact and I can browse through the very easy to use interface (with one grumble as per below).
After a firmware upgrade I could also see YouTube videos - cool!
    The downsides:
One of the reasons I seriously considered getting this box was to try and take some of the strain away from my aching PC's hard drive. However on looking further it appears that, like a Pod, that synching is even more of a one way street. I have over 60GB of music which I hoped I could transfer over to my AppleTV and then remove from my PC. My hope was to delete the AAC files from my laptop and then only sync up new music I imported from the iTunes store or through CDs I Purchased.
Instead I find that if I try to de-select the option of synching I am advised that this will remove the music from the Apple TV also. I'm not sure if this warning is only that it wont sync furhter or it will actually remove the files from the AppleTV ??!
It would seem a bit silly to me to have a 120GB AppleTV full of files which I also have to keep on my PC? How does that work? I understand there are some users who may want this but I am not one. No doubt this will bring in the old copyright issue - but whats the difference of just using the AppleTV as the source for my music etc compared to my PC ??
My second gripe - though smaller - still is a bit niggling. I find that I now will have to spend between $30 - 50 for a piece of software which will allow me to burn my DVDs to a format (MP4)that can be used by the AppleTV. I would have preferred it if Apple could have either
    a) included a free version of what can't be too hard a program for them to write.
    or
    b) accepted different versions of other media formats
After all, we all started importing our MP3s/CDs to iTunes/ iPod and that was what made it more alluring.
    Quick and easy transfer....
Last grumble is around the scrolling not mimicing the Pod - ie quick scrolling through lettters - hopefully a firmware upgrade of the future?
With all the above said I still think it's a great piece of kit but hope that Apple take a little time in their next upgrade to incorporate some new features around interoperability or actually utilising this cool piece of kit more freely.

    Hi
    Welcome to the forum.
Wherever you keep your media files you'd be generally advised to have a backup somewhere else, but as you say you can't even regard AppleTv as a backup device if you can't easily get files off again.
Apple couldn't really provide a program to convert DVDs to AppleTV format unless it was for home made or un-copy-protected discs only. I'm sure they'd love to offer something like that but the movie companies would not allow it in the current climate.
Don't spend money without looking at options.
Try a search for Handbrake, Videora AppleTV Converter and also MPEGStreamclip for Windows.
Handbrake has Mac and Windows version, I think the Videora does too but haven't tried it (it's not the Videora program rather a freebie converter). MPEGStreamclip is a bit of a swiss army knife converter though I can't remember if you'd need the Quicktime MPEG2 plugin to convert MPEG2 files you might have.
Between them and various windows utilities you should be able to accomplish the transfers you want, but encoding is time consuming.

  • LCD Screen Bleed, a little disappointed with Apple store

I bought my 1st iPhone on launch day and loved it! After the 1st 9 days, it suddenly became VERY hot when charging. Not warm, but hot, and it had never done this before. I made an appointment at my Apple store, and the genius agreed that it was defective and swapped it out on the spot.
He exchanged the SIM card and I walked out with a new phone...I was very happy. The first time my new phone went to the Contacts screen, I saw very noticeable light bleed at the top of the LCD display. There are 3 to 4 blotchy areas across the top that are very bright and seem like a defect to me.
I took this phone to the Genius Bar, and was told that it "was within specs" and that there was nothing they would do about it. We compared it to several other demo phones and some did have uneven lighting at the top, however the genius did agree that mine was worse than any of them. He also said that since the phone was working properly, they would not exchange it.
I have begun looking at every LCD panel I can find. My in-car GPS, my laptop, my computer monitor, and my old cellphone. None of them have this issue around the edge of the screen, so I find it difficult to believe that this is normal.
The defect is most noticeable on the "light" colored screens such as Mail and Safari. What is really annoying is that when surfing in landscape mode, the colors on that particular side become distorted due to the light.
I have to admit that I am now pretty disappointed. After spending $600 on a cellphone I want it to be perfect, and it's not. The fact that Apple was not willing to exchange this keep me as a satisfied customer is very disappointing.
It bothers me so much, that I am considering paying the 10% restocking fee to exchange it for a new one since they won't help me.
Just FYI...I have a Mac Pro, 2 Mac Minis, a nano, and a 5G iPod.

    For anyone who hasn't noticed:
Apple is determined to make first generation iPhone buyers happy.
Anyone with a problem, big or small, real or perceived, will be made whole. Since no one really knows what the problems are with this version 1 device, there is bottomless accommodation. Rest assured, any problem will be resolved.
In a company as large as Apple, there are tons of points at which customers deal with employees, and as much as employees are instructed to cater to customer needs, not every human being is the same, and not every Apple employee responds identically. Especially after a long day.
However, in the end, anyone with any kind of problem with their iPhone, will get their problem resolved.
Apple has obviously decided that for this very important product introduction, even serial exchangers get every benefit of the doubt.
Hence posts here along the lines of:
"I am on my 78th iPhone, but am concerned that something is wrong with it. The other day I called my mother in law and her manner was even more rude than usual. Has anyone else noticed this? I am not sure if this is a software or hardware problem, but I am going to my local Apple store tonight and insisting on exchanging this iPhone for a new one. i will call my mother in law from the store and confirm that the new iphone does not include this flaw. (As rude as my mother in law is, she was never this rude on my Blackberry...)"
    So to us, the customers:
Don't be a jerk. Don't take advantage. But realize that any problem you have, big or small, will get fixed.

  • 3GS 32GB - A Little Disappointed

    Hi all,
First off, this phone (3GS 32GB 3.0.1 2 weeks old) has so many plus points that I'll definitely be keeping it. I do have some disappoinments though and, although I thought I'd researched fully (never owned an Apple device before) I'm hoping I've missed a few simple things:
    1. I have 32GB but can't save a file anywhere!?! This must be something simple I'm missing. I'm using QuickOffice which gives a kludgy wifi sort of drive (better than nothing). I'm sure I'll kick myself when I find out how to save files but I'm happy to be embarassed
    2. The GPS things is disappointing in it's accuracy. I've mentioned this in another thread but it's much poorer than my 2 year-old XDA Orbit II. In particular, Maps and TomTom both exhibit significant turning lag and poor direction.
    3. I can't use voice dial over bluetooth. I believe this is to be addressed in 3.1 but can anyone confirm that a single short press on a BT headset will trigger Voice Dial in 3.1?
    4. I can't skip tracks using bluetooth. Play/pause is OK but no track skip despite trying on many different headsets. I can't find out if this is addressed in 3.1 - does anyone have any ideas?
    5. Battery life is atrocious! I googled lots and tried several full discharge/charge cycles but still it barely makes it through a day. I don't do much music, mainly 10 or so phone calls, 10 or so texts and Wi-fi, 3G and push for Exchange on all the time (exactly as old PPC, which lasted for days like that).
    6. Despite Googling, I cannot find anyway to turn off the insistence on 'slide to unlock' when the phone returns from sleep/standby. Fine for those that want it but it strikes me as silly as I turned the phone on myself so obviously I want to use it and not have to unlock first. Is this an option anywhere?
These are my major bug-bears but, as I said, the smoothness and excellent integration of everything makes this a definite keeper so this is not a rant, just a request for some advice. Never having owned anything like this before, I apologise if my questions are silly or if I've asked them in the wrong place.
    Regards

    1. The iphone is not designed as a back up or external drive. The wi-fi solutions are the way to accomplish this.
    2. I have had no problem with this. You can try reset, restore.
    3. No one should confirm this, as it has not been released. Any one who knows is likely bound by non-disclosure agreement not to tell.
    4. See number 3.
    5. It seems that making through the day is common. I get a few days out of mine (not a heavy user). http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
    6. No there is no option for this.

  • Aperture's crop a little disappointing

I recently switched from iPhoto to Aperture, and wow are there a lot of features. It's actually a little intimidating. But anyway, I use this software on my MacBook Pro. With iPhoto, if I wanted to crop an image, I would pinch or expand my fingers vertically and horizontally to crop a picture. It was a huge convenience. In Aperture, I can't (or at least haven't found a way) to do this. Is there a way to make the Aperture crop work like iPhoto's?

    Sovelin,
I don't have a multi-touch trackpad, so I am unable to use the function, but Aperture 3 indicates you can use the "pinch" in crop mode.
    [http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=1%26se ction=3%26tasks=true]
Your profile does not indicate what version of Aperture you are using, but since you are new to Aperture, you are probably using version 3.

  • A little disappointed - 5 weeks before shipping

The order for my mac book pro was received by apple on oct 15. For two weeks it showed ships in 1-2 weeks. Just today when I checked the order status I get ships on NOV 21. This is nearly 5 weeks from when the order was placed.
What is frustrating is if I configure the exact same machine the apple store says ships in 3-5 business days.
Has anyone else experienced these delays?
I called apple I they did not have any answers.
See the order details here: http://gallery.me.com/glennjhansen#100020&bgcolor=black&view=grid

I believe I read somewhere that there were shortages of that drive you ordered.
I placed a CTO order with the 250GB 7200RPM drive on Oct. 19th and received it on the 27th.
It must be a shortage of a component for the computer, or they would ship those adapters separately, if they were out of stock.
    Don't feel bad. I waited 3-months for a liquid-cooled Power Mac G5.

  • I hate to say it but....Lion...I am a little disappointed...

    Hello All:
I am running a 2006 Macbook, black, 2 GHx Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 Mhz of Ram. 13" and I just installed Lion last week. For some reason, I cannot seem to do all the things that apple says I can do.
Is this a hardware issue, meaning, I need to upgrade to do the cool things like AirDrop or use the trackpad to launch mission control? I know it's only $30 bucks but part of me feels gipped in a way with this last OS updrade.
When I got SL last year I was like wow, this is way cool. with Lion, not so much the same feeling.
Any thoughts or advice on this would be great,
    Paul

OK, your Mac is about the minimum for Lion so maximise what you have
More Ram is a must, 2G is where you start, I think your Mac can use 4G so do.
Get a faster hard drive (bigger while you are at it)
You won't get Airdrop and might not get all of the new gestures, hardware limitations.
You have to decide but these suggestions are the most bang for the buck, except for going back to SL

  • Little disappointed - my first reaction

I had FCE 1.0.1 which I could not use since I have an Intel Mac.
    Just received the 4.0 update.
I can't see much changed since 1.0.1! What's going on here?
Also- where are all the different styles of pre-formed texts? there were so many in 1, only a hand full in 4.
I thought real time is big - well, all video still has to be rendered first!

ok, just found finally all the text styles.

  • Nikon D7000 & CS5.5

This one has me a little stumped.
A producer I work with has recently purchased a Nikon D7000 camera.  We have a major project coming up, so we decided to run some tests of the footage and Premiere Pro 5.5, as we'll probably want to take advantage of the new Merge Clips feature..  The results are more than a little disappointing (and confusing).
The camera uses H.264 compression in an MOV container.  (Bleck!  I feel dirty just having that foul Apple junk on my system.  But that's another issue.)  It produces stand alone files, no folder structure to worry about.  Playback in 5.5 is very choppy, regardless of Playback Resolution.  Export takes about 3X real time, and uses less than 20% CPU cycles, whether doing it directly or through AME.
The same clips in the same sequence play smooth as butter in 5.0.3.  They export faster than real time using 100% of the CPU, both directly and through AME.
Both DV and RED clips seem to play fine in 5.5.
I'm not sure what to make of this 5.5 degradation.  Any ides out there?
    (Sample Clip)
    http://depositfiles.com/files/bd55vhsyp

    Glad that  helped.
I wish ADOBE would  create a web based database that someone could check their camera and see how it  works with Premiere.  I know Premiere isn't made for every camera out there but  sometimes that is what the client or friend brings you.
Little things like just  changing the .MOV to .MPG and now something works would help allot of  people.
Maybe Todd or someone  else could make a help page for us giving suggestions for the best way to bring  in footage from different cameras.
Im sure it was set up  some of the mods here wouldn't mind running it and adding to  it.
Anything to make it  easier for new people to use Premiere is better in the long  run.
    Enjoy:   GLenn

  • Linked files and underlined text confusion

I'm running into some unexplained and strange behaviors in a simple Web page I just put up. The URL is http://www.elliottbaypipeband.com/Chunes/EBPBMusic/2011Music.html
    Problem 1:
I've linked PDF files to text that describes the tune names. These links work fine. I've also linked "EP3" files to the little note icon that precedes the tune name. These links don't work. The different browsers report the linked file isn't found.
    Problem 2:
There are four text containers on the page. The first line of text in the first one "Tunes of Glory", is displayed correctly without any underlining. The first line of text in the other three "Concert Music", "Competition Music", and "Legend" are all underlined. Similarly, all of the text in the Legend text container are underlined when viewed in a browser. Only the Comments one should be as it is linked to an email address.
I can't figure out these problems. Any ideas from the experts?
    Thanks

I think I have sorted out these problems.
The EP3 linked file problem was a a file type not explicitly allowed on the Web server I was using. I can fix that.
I worked-around the odd font underlining by using a subtle shadow setting. Now the page looks like I want it to at lease in Safari. It seems that there are a number of quirks like this in iWeb. That's a little disappointing but certainly not a show stopper and not surprising. Software always has quirks.

  • Love the Thunderbolt Display but disappointed with connection to rMBP

I just got a Thunderbolt Display (my first). Gorgeous piece of equipment and typically elegant Apple industrial design.
I'm a little disappointed, though, in how it is connecting to my retina MacBook Pro (yes, I'm completely broke now...).  It seems the power part of the dual connector from the display (power + TB) isn't really designed to work well with the rMBP (see picture).  The 2nd Gen MagSafe adapter works fine, but the angle that it must attach and not interfere with the TB plug makes it very easy for it to become disconnected.  The cord really needs to enter the MagSafe in-line with it, as opposed to 90º.
    Any thoughts?

    unfortunately, will not work ever
your mac needs tb on it to use a tb display; the older mac pro's use the apple led cinema display

  • Motion 3.0 disappointment

I just read in the Motion 3.0 Supplemental Documentation PDF that lights DO NOT cast shadows! I can't believe it.
Oh well, back to After Effects...
    2GHz dual G5 (rev2)

Well sometimes yes sometimes no. Shadows can be a big part of creating depth (the illusion there of). You can do a lot of interesting things just by moving around in 3D space and using lights can add to compositions even if you're not seeing the effects of shadows but sometime the interplay of shadow and object is just what your looking for.
We've all seen the large letters on a ground plane with the single spot light sweep across it. And we really get the feeling of depth because of the long shadow cast behind the letters moving in conjunction with the light. Now I suppose that you could add a behavior to the drop shadow position parameter to move with (but opposite from) the light - I don't know. This would be a lot simpler if the program did it for you.
I'm still excited about this hole update (templates in FCP...nice) just a little disappointed about the shadows.

  • A little disapointed with applications

As a new convert to mac, and with all the "out of the box" hype, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a spreadsheet/word processing package included with this purchase. Esp with the purchase price being more than twice what I purchased my former pc, that did include microsoft works. Apple...how much would this inclusion offset your bottom line? It would be a cool selling point to include these basic options without gouging my delicate bottom line.

Hi brownthrasher: A couple of options for you to consider, Apple has a great package called iWork. It has word processing, spread sheet and presentation functionallity. I believe it is $79. Or if you prefer a cheaper option (free) check out NeoOffice available here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/download.php

  • Should I be disappointed?

My G3 just went to the kids and I was blessed with the new iMac 24" Intel. I have been so excited, yet after one month I have to admit, my former G3 "wonder" works better and faster. Could there be something wrong this, should I call the Mac Life store for a diagnostic? Or, is this just my new lot in computerland. Even my local Mac guru came over to see and use it, and he was also a little disappointed and urged me to seek info. I've only been a Mac user for a few years and would appreciate some advice. thanks

Are these current versions of those applications or older? Are they all Universal Binary? This can make a huge difference if they are PowerPC versions.
And Safari and Mail should not be running slow, even on 1GB or RAM, so it sounds like you may have other issues. I hate to break out the standard reply, but this might be a good time to try a Repair Permissions and maybe clean install of OS X to rule out software conflicts or file damage.
