I lose network connection after MacBook Wakes from Sleep

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my 27" iMac and 15" MacBook Pro. iMac is doing fine. MacBook Pro, however, when it wakes from sleep, seems to have the network untility crash.
So the computer wakes from sleep, and the little status bar radar thing does its little sweep and doesn't just go solid. . If I click on it, it shows my Airport as connected, but after clicking, it freezes. the second to the bottom bar goes solid and the cursor becomes a spinning beachball. If I open system preferences, and select network, it freezes. The only way I can seem to get back on line is to reboot. I have an airport extreme with an older (g) airport express that I use to beam music to my stereo. The MacBook Pro is about 2009 vintage—you can still get to the battery, HD and memory—and the iMac is a bit later. One of the first 27" models, not quad core.
Anyone else having this problem? What more info would you need to help resolve? I'm a novelist and this is killing my productivity.
Thanks,
Steve

Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
System Preferences>Network
Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

  • Apple TV loses WiFi Connectively After waking up from sleep

My Apple TV, software version 3.0.2 (which gives us 1080P btw), works fine, until I put it to "sleep." Later, when I use the Apple TV, it says: "Not connected to the Internet." In effect, my wifi has disappeared from the memory of the Apple TV, and I have to enter the wifi network's password again on the Apple TV.
I have had this Apple TV for about a year; the problem appeared maybe one month ago.
I took it to the Apple Store after Apple Care Telephone Support consulted with engineers. The Apple engineers said it could be a hardware problem, and for me to bring my Apple TV to the Apple Store so they could diagnose it. But at the Genius bar, they put it to sleep and woke it up and it never lost connectivity every time. I suggested that as the Apple Engineers wanted the hardware looked at, why doesn't the Apple Store keep my unit, put it to sleep, and wake it the next business day? The genius bar refused, as the problem did not replicate itself at the genius bar. I told them that trying after 10 minutes wasn't enough. They should try it overnight, as I do (go to bed, try it the next day, only to discover that the Apple TV lost it's connection to the WiFi.
So for now, my work-a-round is that after a few hours, I have to reenter the password for the wifi. I've been reading threads about similar issues with the iPad, but I don't know if the problems are related (technology wise).
Bottom line: My Apple TV loses its connectivity after being in sleep mode for awhile. Nothing to do with the iTunes store or 3.0.2 as far as I can determine; if I don't put it to sleep I don't lose connectivity.

Thank you, Jamie Cox1. However, after rebooting the Apple TV, I lose my 1080P; it goes to 720P and takes about 5 minutes or so to reboot. Then I have to set the 1080P again. The good news is that the wifi returns But it is quicker merely to re-enter my password.
The problem remains: After a while of having the Apple TV in sleep mode, I lose connectivity to my wifi And while I have a complicated password (upper and lower case letters, numbers, and not a dictionary word), it still is quicker to re-enter my password than to wait for the Apple TV to reboot and re-enter the settings for 1080P.
Thanks anyway; if I only had 720P perhaps this solution might be enough - but I have 1080P.
I am working with Apple Care; I have reconfigured my wifi twice with Airport Utility, removed all interference (microwaves, cordless phones), and still the problem remains. Apple Care hasn't solved the problem. The Genius Bar at the Apple Store hasn't solved the problem. Re-booting does find the wifi again, but it takes a long time, and then I still have to re-set the resolution to 1080P. So I just re-enter my password each time.
And that's my update! I appreciate everyone's suggestions. However, the problem remains: after putting the Apple TV in sleep mode, and then later when I want to use the Apple TV, the Apple TV forgets that it is connected to wifi and I have to re-enter my password, or I can take some time and reboot the Apple TV but then while the wifi returns, the 1080P disappears.
Thank you everyone for all your suggestions
    But the problem remains

  • FP1600 loses network connection after a few hours

My FP1600 loses its network connection after a few hours. It is part number 185690C-01, with firmware 4.11. I am running FieldPoint Explorer version 3.0.1 and LabView 6.1 from Windows XP Professional. I set it up, and everything runs fine for 4 hours or more. I do not have the network watchdog enabled, and the FP1600 is in constant communication with the host computer in any case. Sometime in the middle of the night the communication is lost. The FP1600 link light
is on, and it is still receiving packets, but it will not respond to a ping or any other communications. Only a power cycle brings it back. The FP1600 is sitting right next to the host computer, both attached to the same network switch. There is no interruptio
n of network services to the two.

    Hi Heinz,
We are also trying to troubleshoot this same problem (Intermitten network connection loss with FP1600 Ethernet Module - Error code "33163", Error Message - "FP1600 Connection to module has been lost."). We have checked other possible causes for this sort of behaviour. Including independent assessment of netowork availability at the time of error reporting, connecting dedicated power supply to the FP1600 module, temperature of cabinet housing the module (which is between 10 and 50 deg C), disconnecting sensors connected to various I/O modules connected to this module, increasing duration of parameter "time out" (the time module will wait before reporting an error if it can not access network). However, none of the above resolved the intermittent and random network loss errors.
The MAX version is 3.0.2, and the firmware on the module is 4.17, Labview version is 7.0 and the Operating System is windows NT.
I was wondering is there any information about this problem from any user or NI recently. The only solution looking in to this discussion forum seems to be replacing the module.

  • Problems with wi-fi connection after waking up from sleep

    Hey,
    I have MacBook Pro 13 (early 2011), MacOsX 10.7.2.
I've got a problem - when I wake up after sleep my internet connection doesn't work for half a minute, may be more. I do diagnostics and it says that connection is ok, but still don't work. I've tried to do something with energy saving settings, but i didn't success.
What is important: I didn't have such a problem previously. I think it appeared after one of software updates. I can even remember, there was an updated with description, saying that t fixes the problem of internet connections after Mac wakes up after sleep...
How can I solve this problem?

I have the same exact problem and it is caused by the latest ETI or whatever update it is. - the one that required restart of my computer. For me it takes multiple times to turn wifi on and off on my macbook pro before the internet starts working. Someone please help. Apparently reinstalling Mac Os X 10.7.2. should help but I'm not sure if I want to drop my mbp at apple store for 2 days yet again.

  • MacBook wakes from sleep by itself

    Hey!
I got a new MacBook some weeks ago. Works fine so far despite a little fact: It sometimes (randomly?) wakes from sleep (at night). Of course I usually sleep and won't notice anything. But happened 3 times by now that I woke (including last night) from the machines wake up noise (like when you open the lid). It goes back to sleep after a little while, so no real worries about that. But I find it rather strange waking up by itself. Is it possible there are any scheduled wake ups or something like that?
(My previous MacBook - which really had a lot of problems - showed a likely issue. It woke up directly after I put it to sleep. This was caused by some bluetooth problem. Well, this time the wake up issue is not that serious but I'm concerned as well. Do not want the current MacBook behave like the old one.)
I copied the relevant snippets from the logging console this morning. Close the machine at around 11pm, wake up time was around 2am last night (looked at my watch) and the log depicts, me waking up and opening the lid this morning at 9am:

Any explanations, help or suggestions regarding my problem? Do I need to be concerned? (Can not really return the MacBook to Apple as I'm writing my master thesis at the moment..) Or is that normal behaviour? Let me know if you need more details about the machine or this post ended up in the wrong category.
Thanks for your help and best regards!

my MB started just starting up all by itself. i have done almost everything now and still i can't get it to stop starting up. it just doesn't want to stay off. i have thrown out the powermanagement.plist and the wakeup.plist. i have turned off the energy settings, bluetooth, etc. wireless is also off. i have reset the PMU by removing the battery and pressing the power button for 5 secs. the machine would shut off only to come on after 5 mins or so. i have tried shutting down by holding the power button until it shuts down.... come on apple.... what's the problem? it didn't have this before.... just started happening last night. we didn't install or updated anything last night. my wife just checked and replied to her emails.

  • Lose network connection after sleep on iMac but not MacBook

The subject line says it all:
I installed an Airport Express card on my old Rev A iMac when I got my new MacBook and an Airport Extreme Base Station.
The MacBook can go to sleep and, when I "wake" it up, it's ready to go.
After the iMac goes to sleep, its network connection is lost and I have to log back in.
Any way to fix this so the iMac stays logged in?

Haven't received a response but didn't want this hanging out there unresolved. Posted same question to Airport forum in hopes of a response there and marking this "answered."

  • AirPort drops connection after waking up from sleep?

Hi, this situation only occurs on my university campus. My university has a 802.11b wireless network. It makes up about 28 hotspots blanketing the entire main campus, it has a 128bit WEP encryption 26hex and a proxy.
If I attempt to connect the first time, I would get connected. Once I put it to sleep then wake it up, it loses the connection and I would not be able to reconnect (while being bombarded with the error message, "There was an error joining the AirPort name 'xxxxx'") until approximately one hour has passed.
All troubleshooting steps have been tried (deleting p.list files, caches, keychains, reseting AirPort, reseting PMU and PRAM, reformatting HD, you name it, it's been done by my university's computer staff and by a Genius).
I'm currently frustrated not only I can't resolve this issue, but there's finger-pointing from both sides (Apple Genius blaming my Temple Univ wireless network, then Temple blaming on my AirPort's drivers/hardware) and there's nothing conclusive I can prove to both sides (not to mention my MacBook is only 1 week old and only 2 people including me have reported this issue at Temple). I have done one experiment to show that my home Linksys router with 128bit WEP encryption works flawlessly and to testify saying that the previous Core Duo MacBook I had work flawlessly with the Temple wireless network.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This may not actually "solve" the problem, but it may help you bypass it. On my MacBook, I have a network location called "No Networking". I use this location in between some other networks when I have trouble switching (for example, I can switch from my home AirPort network location to my work Ethernet location without any problems, but I can't seem to go the other direction). The "No Networking" location has ALL of the network ports disabled. This is also helpful if you're on an airplane or somewhere you know you won't be using the network because the AirPort card and the Ethernet port actually use battery power to run if you're not plugged into the AC power. So, turning off the ports saves you a few minutes on battery power. So, when I arrive at home, I switch from my "Work Ethernet" location to my "No Networking" location, pause for a couple of seconds and then select my "Home AirPort" location and everything seems to be fine.
To do this, open the Network System Preferences and use the "Location" pop-up menu to create a "New Location". Give your new location a name like "No Networking". Then select "Network Port Configuration" from the "Show" pop-up menu. Uncheck every port and click the "Apply Now" button.
I have a different network location for each of my possible networking options I encounter. When I have trouble moving between two, I just select the "No Networking" location from the Apple menu and then I select the right network. See if that doesn't help some.

  • Wireless connection lost upon wake from sleep

I recently joined the 21st century and purchased broadband internet for my home. I am connecting via wireless ethernet using an original Airport card and flying-saucer type base station. All I did was connect the base station to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, plug it in, and restart my eMac. The network showed up right away and I was connected. Unfortunately, after my Mac went to sleep and I woke it up, not only was there not a connection, but there was no sign of the network.
Airport status showed it was still on, but in the spot where the networks show there was nothing. Restarting corrected the problem, but I assume only until it sleeps again. I can change the settings to make it monitor-only sleep, but I would like a more permanent solution.
What might help to fix the problem, and was there something I needed to do besides just turn my machine off and on to set up this network?
    Thanks.

If you pose this problem over in the Airport or Tiger networking forums, you'll find you've stumbled into a morass of conflicting reports. There have been a disturbing number of reports of Airport connections lost in Tiger after wake from system sleep, usually not reconnected until after a restart. Some people have some success checking the box to put the Airport icon in the menubar ans using that to turn Airport off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on, yet others have reported that only works part of the time and others report it doesn't work at all. Some have reported improvement after downloading and running the full OS X Update Combo 10.4.10 (PPC) on top of an OS updated via Software Update. And the large majority of Airport users never report any problems at all using Tiger. It really sounds like there's no one cause and no one fix.
There is a workaround: don't let the Mac go into system sleep. Use the Energy Saver system preference to set system sleep to Never, uncheck the 'put hard drives to sleep when possible' box, and set the display-only sleep to say 20 minutes. If the eMac is in a bedroom and the sleepers are sensitive to fan noise or power LED lights, that will be a problem, but likely less aggravating than losing your broadband connection.

  • Network Shares Disappear on Wake From Sleep

I recently got a Mac mini to replace an aging Mac Pro. I copied all my data over and everything is running great, and much faster overall. But I'm having one strange bug. When I put my Mac mini to sleep, it wakes up and all of my network shares are gone. I have 4 shares I keep connected all the time, and many more I use occasionally. All of these servers are Macs. I never had an issue like this on the Mac Pro, in all it's years of service. Including the time it was running 10.8. But now, the mini dumps shares - I think every time it goes to sleep, if not, almost every time. It's a real hassle having to reconnect to each share every time you wake up. Plus it's no fun having open documents dissapear either. My network settings are pretty simple, my primary connection is gigabit ethernet. It's first in the "service order" list. I also have airport enabled but not connected. I leave it on so my computer can have location serivces. This is all exactly the same as the setup in the old Mac Pro.
    Any ideas?

If you must put your computer to sleep, you could use an applescript to re-mount your network shares when you wake it up.
    tell application "Finder"
mount volume "afp://servername.local/sharename" as user name aUsername with password aPassword
    end tell

  • Macbook wakes from sleep, restarts when shut down, tried everything. "wake reason = "

My macbook (2008 unibody, 2.4ghz, os x 10.6.8) will not stay asleep, and it restarts when I shut it down. For example, I'll close the lid, it will sleep, then wake a few seconds later, and eventually go back to sleep. After a few cycles of this, the CPU reaches over 80 celcius, but nothing indicative of heavy cpu usage in the activity monitor except for "kernel task." I guess this is because the fans have to keep shutting off when lid is closed. Of the things I've tried, the following have not worked:
*fiddling with all possible energy saver preferences
*disk utility repairs, even with the snow leopard install disc
    *resetting pram and smc
*loading into windows 7 partition, same thing happens
*loading into my external HD, same thing happens
*deleted everything in the LaunchDaemons folder
    *turned off bluetooth entirely
    *turned off airport
*turned off "Set date and time automatically"
    *nothing plugged into USB
*tried with/without magsafe plug, with/without battery, same problems occur
*no errors returned with applecare's Techtool Deluxe
*ran every maintenance script I could: crons, clear cache, rebuilds, updates
*ran the hardware test from one of the install disks, no problems detected
    *turned off login items
I've studied the messages in Console.app like my life depended on it and the only thing that's bugging me is that I get "kernel---------Wake Reason = ". It doesn't give me a wake reason, it's just empty. I can't find anything around the net that could tell me why this occurs. I put "syslog |grep -i "Wake reason ="" into the terminal.app and apparently this has been happening for a week now, hundreds of instances of no wake reasons.
Could this be a hardware error?

Mine does the same thing. I noticed that he little green/yellow light on the magnetic power adapter would go out every once in a while as well. If I would keep the system closed and unplug then replug it, then it would unsleep/sleep whenever it was connected. I switched power adapters with my other MBP and it behaves normally now. ymmv

  • AFP connection interrupted upon wake from sleep

This only happens on my MacBook Pro. MBP. I mount my main Server volume from my Mac OS X Leopard Server via AFP. At night I put my MBP to sleep. In the morning when I wake up I get the message that the "Server connection has interrupted."
No matter what, I either have to click Disconnect or if I don't if will eventually disconnect on it's own and then the message will go away. I can immediately mount the server again after the disconnect message is cleared. I can NOT interact with the volume while the message is on the screen. I must disconnect before I can reconnect to the server.
This doesn't happen on any of my other Macs logging in with the SAME ACCOUNT, so I don't think it's a server issue. Any clues?
I also checked to make sure that the Server was set to disconnect idle users after 75 hours and again I can log on to the same account from a different Mac, put it to sleep, wake it and still be connected (reconnected) to the server no problem.

The serveradmin tool is a Mac OS X Server command available on Mac OS X Server.
For details on the command and command syntax:
    $ man serveradmin
This man page (and the command) are available on Mac OS X Server. This tool is not part of Mac OS X client, nor is this tool apparently installed with the installation of the Server Tools package on a Mac OS X client client box.
You can access the serveradmin command from any platform (Mac OS X, linux, Windows, whatever) that can telnet or ssh into the server box; to initiate a command-level session on the server. And you can access the serveradmin tool through that path.
Or (usually easier) you can use the Server Tools that you've installed, and connect into the server that way. The Server Tools (which are available via the Mac OS X client GUI, and installed with the Server Tools package you have loaded on this system) are located in the /Applications/Server directory. Launch Server Admin, select (or add) the target server, authenticate yourself with credentials appropriate for the server, select the AFP file services, and select (or verify) the setting and behavior for idle connections.

  • Qmaster dead after computer wake from sleep

Qmaster wont wake if computer goes on and off sleep...
and Qmaster menu don´t turn on green dots for active process

Well, I've just gotten off the phone with Apple. After being transferred to a senior technical adviser, his assumption is that it is probably the logic board. We did run the apple hardware test, which it passed. But ironically, I had no mouse function the whole time because it was frozen up in the corner (thank goodness for the enter key).
After lots of silence on the line, he determined that since the computer wasn't even 30 days out of warranty, that he would classify it as Dead on Arrival (since it has had problems straight out of the box, has had repairs and is still having issues), and arranged for sales to contact me (on Monday of course) to replace it. I'm sure it will be another refurb, and I pray that this one treats me well. I'm really tired of loading & reloading all of my data. I have an external drive due to arrive Tuesday that I can create a back-up on of this machine, and transfer it all via Time Machine when the new one is in my hands. So let's hope this is last you hear from me! Thanks!
