I lose the marching ants from Quick Selection brush

When I release the left mouse button when making a selection with the Quick Selecton tool the marching ants dissappear. The tool has bee working fine until this morning. Is anyone familiar with this problem and it's solution?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

marching ants dashes are thicker than usual, the dashes are black and white, not gray as usual. I supposed I played with size, hardness spacing window, sliders are all the way to the left now. Thanks

  • What happened to the ability to hide the "marching ants" (CTRL/CMD H) in Photoshop?  I cannot view the edges of my selection with the marching ants in the way!

I have been using Photoshop since version 2.5 when it came on 16 floppy disks.  In all of the versions I've purchased over the years (many) up to CS3, I have always been able to use CTRL+H (Windows) or CMD+H (Mac) to hide the "marching ants" selection outline.  This is immensely useful when making all sorts of adjustments where the edge of the selection must be viewed while "fiddling with the knobs" (so to speak).  Without being able to hide the selection boundaries ("marching ants"), I often have to make a best guess, undo the selection, get bummed that the edge isn't what I want, then have to undo, reselect, try again... over and over.   This is such a SIMPLE feature, but the lack of it is driving me crazy.  I searched HELP, but it didn't live up to the promise.  If there is a way to hide the marching ants, where is the menu item, and what is the shortcut?

You can assign Ctrl/Cmd H to hide Selection Edges (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts) only, if you don't want to hide everything, but you will be warned if some other function has the shortcut.

  • How do I make the marching ants bigger so I can see them?

    Hi.
I just "upgraded" to Photoshop CC and a new macbook pro on Yosemite.
I have been using photoshop since the 90's and this is the first time Im having serious problems with it.
The "marching ants" are impossible to see when using the magic wand to select.
Im sure there are better ways to select these days- but I have a method to my madness and need to be able to see what Im doing.
And yes my glasses prescription is up to date.
It feels like its a function of black and white imagery and this new screen which though "better" doesn't feel "better"- in fact it makes many things harder to see...
Any advice would be very very much appreciated.
    Thank-you

  • Quick Selection Brush Tool

I have been trying to follow a fascinating earlier thread about changing the
background of an image. In news:[email protected] , Bob
Warren wrote, "I refined that somewhat again with the selection brush." I
looked this up in Help, where I was confronted with
    Quick Selection Brush tool options
    A. Quick Selection tool
    B. Selection Brush tool
In the Editor, select the Quick Selection Brush tool...
    and on the next page,
In the Editor, select the Selection Brush tool from the toolbox. You may
need to click the Quick Selection Brush tool in the toolbox and select the
Selection Brush from the list of hidden tools that appears.
What is the difference between a Selection Brush, a Selection Brush tool, a
Quick Selection tool and a Quick Selection Brush tool? And which one should
I be using to "refine" a selection?
    Noel

The quick selection tool and the selection brush are grouped together as a subset of the same tool in the toolbox. By default it shows the Quick selection tool. The sentence means that you will see the quick selection tool in the toolbox. To get to the (non-quick) selection brush, you must click the quick selection tool and choose the regular selection brush from the flyout menu.

  • What happened to the "marching ants" in Photoshop CS5?

When I use the lasso tool and lasso an object, it does not show the dashed lines,
aka marching ants, until I let go of my mouse.  Since I can not see the lasso outline,
it is hard to tell when I get back to the beginning.  This issue also occurs with the
crop tool and other tools.  It does not show the outline until you let go.  This is not
    good.

I sent a similar post here; I have had the same settings in preferences for years (with GL), and the same video card, and the "Cntrl H" does not change the "SOLID" outline to marching ants -- it use to toggle them on and off, but they are NOT there to toggle -- only SOLID line around the selection.
Rothage, what video card do you have?
The display driver, along with your video card, implements OpenGL, which has much complexity and many different versions and options.
If you've had the same video card for years, and you haven't changed anything, it almost certainly needs a driver update, if not a complete replacement.  It depends on how many years, but video cards that run Photoshop well with OpenGL acceleration have only been available for 3 or 4 years, and even today driver updates are being released that enable OpenGL functions not previously available.
Things move on.  Photoshop CS5 is using OpenGL differently than its predecessor, and it may turn out (depending on what video card you have) that to get the most out of the very latest Photoshop you'll need to upgrade to one of the very latest video cards.  The good news is that cards that run Photoshop very well can be had for well under $100 nowadays.
I suggest, at the very least, visiting the web site of your video card maker, and updating to their latest driver release.
You should also experiment with Photoshop's OpenGL advanced preferences, in the Edit - Preference - Performance menu.

  • How to copy and paste into the same picture using quick selection tool

I have Photoshop CS5 and am new at this.  What I need to do is copy and paste something in the image back into the same image.  I can select it with the quick selection tool.  All I want to do is paste a copy of it back into my image, move it and rotate it a little.
I've searched for an answer for a couple of days now and evidently, I'm searching for the wrong thing.  This is what I need to do and I don't know how to get there.  I do this in Digital Image Suite all the time and it's very simple.  I know Photoshop is a lot more complicated but you can do more with it so I am trying to switch by using it to work on my projects.  I've read articles where people say to use the quick selection tool and do a copy and paste but for me, all it does is add blank layer and the selection disappears.  If I paste again, it pastes the item in the middle of the image and I can't move it or change it in any way.
One more question:  in the Filters menu, all of the filters are gray-shaded.  I read that I have to buy these filters, is that true?
Thank you for your help.  If there is a beginner's forum where you would rather I post my questions, please let me know.

Once you have a selection, I use Ctrl C to copy and Ctrl V to paste.  This will add a layer but may not look like it as it is in exactly the same spot in picture.  If you paste again it will show up near middle of picture.
If you want to resize and rotate use Ctrl T.
More options are in Edit/Transform.  I particularly like Warp.
All the filters should be active, but many only work in 8 bit RGB mode.  To see what mode they are in click Image/Mode.

  • In Firefox4, can I lose the folder icons from the Bookmarks Bar while keeping icons everywhere else (because the folder icons are superfluous and extend the horizontal list of bookmark folders beyond the width of the window)?

I've just installed Firefox4 for Mac (OS 10.6.7) and can no longer see all my bookmark folders at once across the top -- because the folder icons make the Bookmarks Bar too wide. Yet, I like the icons on the other bars, so I don't want to turn them off globally. Is there a way to just lose the folder icons -- which don't appear to serve a purpose anyway?

Small correction to original post. Machine is an iMac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. (I was at home when I made the first post.) But the bookmarks menu behavior still exists today and FF 5 is essentially unusable.
System details next to the post are not for machine with the bug in question.
Found a copy of FF4 to use until a solution is found. Turned off automatic updates to preserve this version.

  • How to store the return value from a select list in page item ?

I'm sorry, I'm sure you will all flame me for this (and its long too :-(. I'm still trying to pick this up and havn't had time to read manual and this forum and up against the clock (as usual), but this must be something thats simple to do, otherwise why have 2 cols on LOV (display text and return value.
normal kind of thing - master /detail, a master table and a detail table, master.id is PK in master, master.name is the name of the master item. detail.id is pk in detail, detail.mid is foreign key to master.id. I have a tabular report that displays a join of cols from master and detail, with 2 cols being links, one is a link on master.name, that passes master.id to page P1 and it displays a row from master. The other col displays detail.name and passes detail.id to page P3, P3 displays a row of the detail table.
I want to populate a LOV with possible master.name values, but display the name of the current P3_MID value (from detail.mid). Then a user can pick a different master and it needs to update P3_MID so on submit it updates the row.
I just can't seem to see in the manual how you can specify where the return value on a LOV goes?
As I said, sorry for long post and not having had time to read docs correctly - someone just point me at the subject matter somewhere, please.

Sorry, I was trying to be to complex and obviously APEX is just too damn cleaver - I figured out how this works - basically APEX pulls the LOV and then matchs the mid to it to display the correct name - simple and easy - just me making it difficult

  • CS4 selection marquee marching ants - bug

In Photoshop CS4 tryout in Mac OS X 10.5.5: Selection marquee is incorrectly drawn one pixel to the left of the actual selection. Simply create a new document, like 800 x 600 pixels, then select all (Command+A). The "marching ants" selection marquee is shifted one pixel to the left of where it should be. Can anyone confirm?
I'm unsure how to report this to Adobe. They don't make it very easy.
    -a

Well, since it appears as if a pixel is being split by a marquee selection, and since by definition a pixel
    cannot
be divided, then it's a display anomaly.
What you'll have to figure out is what region the marquee actually defines when you see what appears to be a line of marching ants running through the center of a pixel. Does the "partial" pixel end up inside or outside of the selection?
Then again, depending on the type of work being done, it may not really matter much, from a visual standpoint.

  • How do I hide marching ants in cs6--command H did the job in CS4

The marching ants interfer with my selection work consequently I always hide them with command H but this option does not appear available in CS6.  Anybody have a solution?
    Thanks,  Bob

Mac OSX has moved towards encouraging all applications to adopt a standard keyboard shortcut - Command H - for hiding the application.
If you don't have your "Show Slection" set up with a keyboard shortcut, when you use Cmd H it will ask you if you want it to use it to hide Photoshop (Mac standard) or Hide/Selections, etc. (Photoshop Traditional)
It will do this even if you already have Hide Photoshop shortcut: Command-Control H.
Just go to the Edit Menu - Keyboard Shortcuts to specify a shortcut for Selections Edges.
I believe the language for this has changed slightly in different versions.

  • Photoshop CS4 and the mysterious vanishing marching ants...

About ten minutes ago, as I was cropping photos in Photoshop CS4, the marquee tools suddenly lost their marching ants.
Now, when I click on the rectangular marquee tool and move the cursor to select an area, the outline of the selected area is invisible - until I let go of the mouse, when it suddenly appears as a solid line.
I assume I must've turned the marching ants off somehow by mistake. How do I turn them back on?
A swift web search suggests that I can hit Control+H or Command+H to turn the marching ants on and off. Neither of these work for me.
Other suggestions I've found are to 'reset' the tool (how?) - or install a new video card, which surely can't be an issue in my case. I have not installed any updates - this literally happened minutes ago, in mid-job.
I'm using a Mac, OSX 10.8.5 if that makes any difference…
There MUST be a simple 'click on such-and-such' solution. Thanks in advance if you know it!

Slight update - I have now discovered how to reset tools in Photoshop. Basically, I did what the video in the link below suggests.
    It didn't make any difference.
When I selected the rectangular marquee tool for resetting, a message in the box said  'No presets defined for current tool' - which presumably means there was nothing to reset. That would explain why it didn't work, then.
So if the marquee tools did not have any presets, why did the marching ants turn off - and how do I get them back?
