You won't be able to turn off encryption without the password, you would need to start afresh with the phone i.e. reset it back to factory defaults and set it up as a new device : Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes :
When your backup is encrypted, you'll need to enter the password when you enable or disable encryption or when you restore from the backup.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
There are some tips on this page for trying to help you remember the password : iOS: Troubleshooting encrypted backups.

If you don't have a backup then the only possible solution is to go back to the store and see if they can get your old phone and create a backup of that. I know very often that Apple employees will wipe the returned iPhones clean before shipping them back to wherever they ship them.
When you say your old phone was "broken" does this mean it is dead and won't turn on?
Do you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, or a clone that might have this info on it?
Other than that I hate to say you may be out of luck. Time Machine and/or a cloning program performed regularily will inevitably save your a** in situations like this.
    Good luck

  • Develop Settings lost after backup: HELP!

I have opened LR5 and found ALL the pictures have lost development settings that cost me hours of work.
Or better: when I open a folder in the Catalog the pictures are first shown for a couple of seconds with the edits (for example BW) than as originally imported. All the development settings are gone and can't be found anymore. The history is empty.
The last thing I did when I last used LR was a backup.
I opened the backup Catalog, but also this one doesn't show any edit.
Is there any way to recover.
I am honestly tempted by throw this software to the waste bin.
    Thanks for any help.
    Max Polix

While regular backups of the Catalog are a good idea, it should not really be necessary to make them every single session IMO. It is (of course) better to become confident and sure enough in the use of the software, that backups are needed only for "background" protection. If you don't trust the software, or don;t trust yourself with the software, that prevents you from progressing - so it is first necessary to understand what kinds of thing can go wrong, but also what kinds of thing cannot go wrong with LR.
Example reasons why your edits may seem to disappear from view, include firstly, that the images may have been Reset. This option applies default values to all the various adjustments, replacing whatever edited value they may have shown prior to that. However, those prior adjustments still remain accessible within each image's History; having being automatically logged to the Catalog as you have gone along, in this case as the previous step before this latest "Reset Settings" step.
Or perhaps the metadata settings may have been brought in from the file on disk, e.g. by accidentally selecting "Read metadata from file" instead of "Write metadata to file". If metadata had not previously been written out from LR to the file, then this would be like going back to its beginning "as first imported". Or if they had been saved, at some earlier point, you would be in effect recalling this earlier state again, to the top of the History. Again, however it may appear, this loading-in of the metadata is a NEW thing happening to each image. The previous step in the History still holds the PRIOR edits of the image, as they appeared before this happened.
So it is worth looking at the Catalog that you have - almost always information still held there is the key to retrieving things back to where you were before. It is important to resist rash action here: NO re-importing, NO Syncing folders, until you have worked out what the situation truly is. Then of rectifying whatever specific thing has got temporarily out of shape (most often, this is a matter of updating something within the Catalog itself), and then... carry on.

  • Lost all Backup Data - Cautionary Tale

Today I did a restore of my phone and lost all of my email, notes and configurations.
It was surprisingly easy to do...
iTunes went through the restore process, activated my phone with ATT, then asked me if I wanted to restore from the backup. It was during this part of the process that itunes stopped and presented a message stating that an error had occurred and the restore was incomplete.
I clicked okay and then made a fatal mistake....
What I should have done was restore the phone again.
Unfortunately I was in the middle of a thousand things, and clicked 'sync' whereby my backup, the backup of my phone was overwritten by a new backup of the empty phone.
Of course I still have my contacts, calendar, music, etc.
What's gone are all my notes (I had a lot), all of my email accounts, including sent emails, (of which no other copy exists) and less importantly any personal configurations I made.
There are no 'backups' of the backup files, no alternate versions that I can find. If someone knows better, then I'm all ears, but sadly I think I'm just SOL.

If you use .Mac, then your sent emails may still be on the .Mac server. Just a thought.

  • Pics lost at backup

I have a iphone5 (2 month old/no Backup) with a lot of pictures from my last vacation at mexico. Today i wanted to save all of them in iphoto but my itunes started an older backup from my last iphone 4..... i cut the connection and now almost everything is lost! I had to make all first inpuds like u have to do after buying. The apps are still there but all pics are gone. Unfortunately this action switched my icloud in which most of the pics were!
I'm desperate. Could anyone please help me ?!?

If you didn't have PhotoStream turned on so that they could upload to the cloud before you plugged it in and started restoring it from an old backup without backing up the phone or extracting the photos first, they are gone.
If you had PhotoStream turned on, go into Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Make sure it's still turned on. If the account is not there, add it.

  • Time Machine - lost incremental backup

The preferences panel for Time machine says it keeps
    * hourly backups for the past 24 hours,
    * daily backups for the past month,
    * weekly backups until your disk is full.
I notice that the reduction of hourly backups to one backup for a day appears to keep the earliest (incremental) backup for that day and deletes the rest.
To test this, I created a small file on the desktop on 13th Oct 2008 at 18:30, let time machine back it up at 18:45 and I then moved the file from the desktop to the trash at 19:00.
I checked that the file existed in the time machine backup for 18:45.
As I suspected, Time machine has only kept one backup for 13 Oct timed 12:01 am. The file is not in the backup for the 13th or 14th Oct (it is now 15th Oct). The original file is still in my trash.
If this had been an important file that I had deleted accidentally, I would not be very happy.
For the record I am using a MacBook running OS 10.5.5 using a 500Gb Seagate FreeAgent drive connected via firewire.
Shouldn't Time Machine consolidate all the incremental backups for one day into the one backup that it keeps (and eventually consolidate the daily backups into the weekly one that it keeps) so that files are not 'lost' in this way?
    Arthur L.

    Welcome to Discussions.
    [This|http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archives/2007/12/howleopardtim.html] explains it well:
"As Apple presents the Time Machine filesystem view, you can see your system approximately:
As it was at the top of each hour today
As it was each day for the past 30 days, starting yesterday
As it was each week, starting 31 days ago, going back as far as disk space permits
A distraught user might only be interested in the amount of data he may have lost:
If you accidentally deleted a file today, you lose up to an hour's work
If you deleted it between yesterday and 30 days ago, you lose up to a day's work
If you deleted it more than 30 days ago, you can lose up to one week's work, or all of it."
Hopefully the file you've lost took longer than an hour to create than the example you tried.
    /p

  • Lost itunes backup data.

I backed up my iphone before i restored it and the process was all going well, i had it backed up to the backup i made before the restore. My computer just suddenly crashed out of nowhere. I set everything back up and tried to re back it all up but the only back up it was showing was the most recent one. But the most recent one only had my music and apps. So i lost all my contacts, text messages, and photos. It doesn't even show that the back up i did before the restore exist. If anyone knows how to find that backup, please help.

I didn't see an edit available for my previous post but I will add the the file size of the numbers1.6.ipa is 289,371
    if that helps any.

  • Data lost after backup

My itouch 3rd gen was dieing. I tried backing it up and restoring, but it still died. Fortunately, I had an extended plan, so was given a 4th gen. When I synced the new itouch, not all my apps synced, and data was lost. I know that in the past if I had to "buy" an app I already owned, the data which was backed up on my computer was saved, and installed with the new app. This is not the case with the new itouch. Is there anyway to access this data?

App data is saved in the iPod backup.  It is not in your iTunes library where a copy of the app is stored. In iTunes go to Preferences and then to the Device tab.  See if the date of the iPod backup  would correspond to when you had your old iPod.  If so, the restore you iPOd from that backup.  If not there, do you have an older copy of the backup file that you can get from yur computer backup such as from TimeMachine.  Otherwise, the data is lost.

  • Lost my backup: password is incorrect

I have lost all my memories updating to the next iOS system.
I have never put a password to my old iPh backup, but iTunes,
without being asked, tells me that I have to insert one.
That's devastating. Everything's lost. Someone knows how to fix this problem?
I've tried old passwords, with or without caps letters, 0000, 00000, 1234, 12345, 9999, click cancel, renewing a new AppleID password  but nothing worked. I've tried also the trial version of Elcomsoft password recovery tool (= password don't exists)
    I've a Windows 7 machine.
Please help me (photos, numbers, notes), maybe exists a sort of password.
That's really unpleasant since I'm a physician and lots of documents were important and private informations.

iTunes does not and can not set up password protection for your iPhone's backup, which must be entered twice for confirmation.
Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer and there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air with iOS devices. Never a good idea to depend on an iPhone or any cell phone alone for such important data.
Notes can be synced with a supported application on your computer as well.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Unless you have a good friend on the CIA or law enforcement with state of the art encrypted password detection equipment, consider your backup and the data within as gone.

  • It seems as if my time machine has lost some backups.

I have had my time machine for over six months.  I lost a video a couple of months ago and needed it replaced and was able to do so without a problem. For some reason that video is gone again and I went back into the time machine to get it.  This time however the time machine only shows a couple of months of backups and I cant go far enough back to find the file I need.  It is a 2T time machine and I have pleanty of space so I know it never got full.
Is there a way to restore or access older backups that Im guessing still must be in there somewhere?  Thank you for your help

There is a likely chance that shortly after you installed Lion on your computer, that Time Machine sent you a message indicating that it needed to start a new set of backups.
At that time, the previous backups would have been deleted and new backups were started over again.
That would explain the "shorter" history of backups.
If by some chance the "old" backups are still on the Time Capsule, you can try the following:
Right-Click on the Time Machine icon on the dock
Select Browse Other Time Machine Backups
See if there is another "disk" that appears
If yes, click the other disk to highlight it and then click Use Selected Disk to see your "old" backups
Reverse the procedure above to get back to your current set of backups.
Another thought......did you delete the file from your computer at any time, thinking that it would stay on the Time Capsule?
