You do not need to install the "Find My iPhone" App.
If you had "Find My iPad" enabled in Settings > iCloud then you may be able to locate it. If not, you cannot locate it.
If it was enabled then you can try locating it via http://icloud.com on a computer or the App "Find My iPhone" on another iDevice. Note: this will only work if your device is connected to a network and the device hasn't already been restored as new and/or "Find My iPad" has not been disabled on it. Note: Disabling "Find My iPad" is much more difficult in iOS 7.
If you think that your device was stolen rather than lost then you should report it to the police. In either case you should contact your carrier, change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

The only way to locate/disable/erase any lost/stolen iPhone is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords.
If your carrier offers Blacklisting & they Blacklist the phone, it will be unusable as a phone.
If locked with a passcode, all a thief or whoever finds it has to do is force the phone into recovery mode & restore it. While this deletes all data on the phone, it also removes the passcode so the phone can then be used as a phone or touch.
There is NO WAY to report any lost/stolen product to Apple. -

Can you explain what you mean by "partitioned an external drive to my mac intel"?
If you repartition a drive, that will always erase the whole drive. Is that what you did? Did you use Disk Utility, or something else? Disk Utility does say "To erase and repartition the disk..." so it does warn you what will happen.

I have remote locked my mac using find my iPhone app via my iPad - I am unable to enter the unlock code as the mac keyboard won't pair with the mac - I guess that will teach me for playing...any ideas?

Try closing the App Store app via the iPad's taskbar and then do a soft-reset and see if you can install it after the iPad has restarted. To close the App Store : double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag the App Store app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
Soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. -
The find my iPhone app shows my iPad and iPhone in a totally different location about 100 miles away and my devices are in my lap.... I'm confused ...
Any thoughts on this , I'm worried that someone has cloned my device Id and is phishing , or would there be just a major glitch in the GPS ? I have turned off the location app and turned it back on to see if it was a glitch still comes up to the same location about 100 miles way to a place I have never been. Help !

How can I install "Find my iPhone" on an old iPad 3?
I've recently gotten a new iPad, but my old iPad 3 is still working fine. So I've done a complete wipe on it and I've given it to a friend who has little interest in computing: she just wants to email and get on the internet. My friend will have to undergo surgery next week and will take the iPad 3 with her to the hospital -- she'll be in the hospital for a week or two. Before she went, I wanted to install 'Find my iPhone' on the iPad 3 in case it goes walkabout in the hospital.
However, when I tried to install it, AppStore insisted I upgrade to iOS 8, which I don't think the iPad 3 can pull off. I once upgraded to to iOS 5 or 6 and regretted that real soon -- the iPad 3 just doesn't have the processor speed to handle all that advanced stuff. It's doing fine on iOS 4 and I want to keep it that way. Is there some way to make AppStore install the old 'Find my iPhone'? I still have some backups of the iPad 3 pre-wipe -- could I extract 'Find my iPhone' from there and put it back on the iPad 3 without doing a full restore? Is there some other way we can keep track of the iPad 3 without updating?If you have iOS 4.3 on it then it's not an iPad 3 (they were initially launched with iOS 5.1 installed on them), it's either a first gen iPad (if it doesn't have cameras), or a 2nd gen : Identify your iPad model - Apple Support.
The Find My iPhone app is used to try and locate other devices from it, it won't help you locate that iPad if it's lost. To be able to potentially locate and track that iPad you need Settings > iCloud > Find My iPad 'on' on it, but iCloud only became available with iOS 5 (so you won't have the setting on iOS 4.3). You will need to update the iPad (you can only update a device to the highest iOS version that it supports i.e. 5.1.1 for the first gen iPad, 8.1.3 for other iPads) if you want to be able to enable it -
