  • I would like to do a full restore from time machine but have lost my boot/install disk.

    Hi,
Recently had my HDD replaced (with fresh OS installed) and even though I have everything backed up on time machine am struggling to complete a full restore.
After reading time machine help understand I need to mac os install/boot disk to get to the time machine full restore utlility.
I cannot find my install disk. Can I create one from my current mac?
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

The install disk cannot be created.  If you call Apple (1-800-MYAPPLE) they should be able to order you a new set of disks specifically for your computer.
I found this old answer talking about what the disks are:
If you bought your computer new, you may be able to contact Apple about buying a replacement boot/install disc#1 for your specific computer. If a disc is lost or damaged, they have been known to be able to help. Not sure if a call to Sales Support would be the direction to take on this; but it would make more sense to ask them about the replacement.
The disc #1 and #2 that come with the machine will (or more, if it has a CD packet and the OS is not on a DVD) restore the computer to how it was new. If you upgrade to an all new OSX version and wanted to add the original applications (instead of buying new ones; not always a good idea if the leap was a great one from original OS to the last version) you could use the disc #2 to add applications to a system. It has installers, & won't boot.

  • Lost the original install disks

Someone gave me an old iBook (2004) but they lost the original (gray) installation disks that came with it. Will inserting my Leopard install disk contain everything I need to make it work (or see if it works?)
    Thanks

What do you mean by "my Leopard install disk"? If it is a retail (black) disk, it should be able to install a copy of Leopard that supports any iBook that meets the Leopard system requirements. If from the gray disk set that came with your other computer, it will not install Leopard on anything except the exact model the set was furnished with.
Be aware in any case that Apple's licensing requirements mean you must have one license per computer for each OS version you use -- for instance, you cannot "share" a single-user Leopard license across two Macs -- and that a retail OS installer disk does not contain, nor does it license you to use, any bundled software that comes on the OEM disk set.

  • Lost the 2nd install disk for my imac....

....but will the the Common Media disk of my Mac Book Pro serve the same purpose? I'm hoping that this would be the case: can anyone shed any light on this please, because I need to reinstall the OS on my imac ASAP. Looked everywhere and simply cannot find it at the moment. Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately, it will not. The "Common Media" is just the components common to many model bundles, but does not contain the complete OS & will not install it.

  • IPod install disk creates internal error

I just bought my 1st iPod but am having difficulty. iTunes loaded just fine and I can download music/videos, etc. but I cannot download songs from iTunes onto iPod. When I connect to USB, the 'do not disconnect' message comes on but songs do not get loaded onto iPod.
Internal error I get at install has only a number, no description to tell me what the error is.
    Appreciate any help!!!

What's the error number that you're getting?
Also, what model/generation iPod do you have?
You could try bypassing the iTunes install CD and downloading the latest version (7.0.1) from the website.

I think I inadvertantely erased all my previous files. I thought that I clicked on save previous system, but nothing is there. I have a brand new desktop that is crisp and new as just out of the show room. I am hopelessly looking for some way to retrieve the old material--is it al all possible to get them back

If you did an Archive and Install your User Folder should be saved. Do a simple search (Command + F) and type Users in the search field ans see what comes up. If you have lost them all all is not lost if you remember to backup next time.
    Good luck.

  • Lost iPod software disk - urgent help needed!

I've just got a new laptop and am in the process of transferring all my files across. I went to put in my iPod and realised I have lost my iPod software disk (the one that you get with the iPod when you buy it). Is there anything I can do to get some software and install my iPod, or is finding the disk my only way? :/ Please help!

you can download the latest version of the installer from this location:
    iTunes 7.0.2.16 Installer
... and there are also archives of version 6.0.5.20 and the last version of the ipod updater available here (if you don't want to do an itunes upgrade):
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20060628forwindows.html
(with iTunes 7.0.x, there is no longer a "standalone" updater application. ipod updates and restores are done with itunes instead.)

  • Lost Install Disks iMac 2.33 6.1 2006

I did a secure erase before realising that I had lost my original install disks.
Rather than trying to get a set of install disks from Apple if I purchase a retail version of Snow Leopard will that
work, even though there is no sytem currently on the computer.
    Thanks

As that model originally shipped with either 10.5.8 or 10.6.0. the retail installer (which is 10.6.3) should be fine.
You'll not have the iLife applications which were bundled on the original disc 2, though, or Apple Hardware Test which also came on disc 2.
Of course you could just restore from your backup…

  • Install disk vs. Tiger Retail

Have a G5 quad core (came with Tiger) that's having frequent app quitting issues and kernel panics. Called Applecare, and they said they need the original install disks in order to troubleshoot further. Unfortunately, we lost the original install disks, and Applecare has tried to ship one set a week ago (after we purchased the set) and now they are telling me it's lost and they don't have tracking information. Today they said they'll ship out another set, but it won't get here before the weekend, which is when I was planning to work on the system.
So, my question is - if I go to the Apple Store and buy a full retail copy of Tiger, will that have all the necessary software to at least Archive and Install the system? I've read here and on other Mac resource sites that the A&I function is a fix for a lot of system issues.
I assume this is something similar to the "Clean Install" in the OS 9 days, so I think that might be the best path to resolve the issues. While waiting for the disks (that ultimately got lost), I went ahead and tried a few things: I copied the system to another internal drive and ran TT Deluxe on the original system/drive. All tests reported fine, except for the actual last operation (file/disk scan?). It found and fixed numerous major file and directory issues (after running it over and over for what felt like 3-4 hours). I think there were some system files affected, because the system does not want to start up from that disk anymore (black screen with a single command line at top of screen), even though TTD and Disk Utility report the disk as OK. I switch the startup disk to the system "copy" and we are currently limping along with frequent app crashes and some non-working system apps. Very annoying, and I need this fixed right away.
So, I was thinking running an archive and install on he original system will get us up and running again. Provided, of course - that function is available with the retail version of Tiger.
    Any thoughts?

Ram? Yes, we have 4 1GB DDR2 PC4200 DIMMs that were sold as 100% Factory Spec Certified from 18004memory.com
TT Deluxe passed the RAM with no problems.
Also, the problems started months after we installed this RAM.
Are you telling me that I need to buy RAM directly from Apple in order for the computer to function correctly? This sounds like they've learned some business strategy from Intel pretty quickly. Take an OEM supplied item that was historically known in the industry as a free and openly competitive market (memory), driving price down to benefit the consumer, and make it Apple only, requiring their users to buy from them and pay a price well above fair market value? This is like owning a Ford car, and being told by a Ford mechanic that the car will only run right with Ford tires at $200 a pop.
Aren't they making enough money with the iPods?
How about at least partnering with their RAM supplier to sell the RAM w/o the Apple brand and premium price? Or, does Apple make RAM now too? Lord help us.

  • System Preferences corrupt  ! install disk missing

For some reason my System Preferences stopped working saying its corrupt or missing and having just moved i now realise i have lost my system install disks.
What can i do i cannot believe i left the disks have rang to people were i live and whatever was left was thrown out ! how stupid can you get to leave vital disks behind.

Ok this is what happened i had been using a USB CF card reader HY-01001 no problem yesterday i had company and the llid was closed and i will still online. I took the card reader out when i turn it back on i got a security message about startup and a file called pace--something ! i took no notice really. Then i tried the card reader and that no longer works i know i never installed any software for it in the first place. I rebooted a few time but every time i got the message saying cant start up system preferences so i tried to start from the application folder but it was report not working, so i went to the directory and deleted it (after all its only an app) there was something above it called pacexxx (cant remember full name) so i deleted that. I have had this happen once before but reinstalled from my disks. Then i realised that i have lost the two disks. I had to move in a bit of a hurry and yes i forgot to pack the disks yes its my problem.
Now the Macbook 6.1 (late 2009 the serial trace says) is running the card reader will still not work yet my internet dongle works so the USB seems ok and i cannot find a download for the app system preferences. I have no idea if the Macbook as screwed the card reader up or somehow blanked card readers. sorry rambling on a bit
Apple, well to be honest i could not see why i could not find a download for the system preferences app as it seems to have problems. Its not just Apple but every company seems to use high cost phone lines and you get through to a computer designed to get as much time and money out of you as possible. Having said that i love my Macbook and iPhone so love Apple products i never registered the Macbook but signed up with Apple using the serial number so its my original bought and paid for Macbook 6.1.
Sorry once again about rabbling any advice
Why the card reader no longer works .
Can i make it work again ?
Can i find a download for the missing app ?

  • Install disk for a m505 Palm Pilot

I have a old Palm Pilot m505.  I just purchased a new computor and have lost the origanal install disk.  When I try to install the program it asks to put in the install disk which I do not have .  Where and how do I get a new install disk?
    Post relates to: Palm m505

When you say "new computer", I assume you mean a Windows 7 machine?  Even if you had your disc, the application wouldn't work.  You will need to download and install Palm Desktop 6.2.2 from the support site above.  And because PD 6.2.2 is not compatible with really really old Palm handhelds like yours, you will then have to install and download a freeware utility from www.pimlicosoftware.com called PalmHotsyncSetup.
Check the Sticked thread in the Windows Hotsync board about syncing with Windows Vista and Windows 7 for more info.
