I Love iMovie 08!!!

All I can say is, WOW!
This is the exact program I've been waiting for. I'm just an ordinary guy wanting to make decent home movies quickly and easily. I'll gladly sacrifice bells and whistles for simplicity. Besides, if I wanted that, I would get Final Cut.
I just made my first iMovie 08 movie in about two hours. This same movie would have taken at least 4x that in iMovie HD. I have a Sony HDR-SR1 with AVCHD. It imported perfectly. I especially like the skimming feature. It was so easy to edit, add titles, background music. Everything is so visual and well-designed.
Hats off to the Apple design team on this one. They made my simple life even simpler.

iMovie HD was a very nice app but it didn't support flash based camcorders. I just got the Panasonic HDC-SD1 along with iLife and iMovie 8 is great! I am a commercial photog and the little camera is about the size of a lens in my camera bag so it cost very little in space since I have to carry a laptop anyway.
iMovie 8 is fast and lets me get the video where I need it fast. Downloading SDCH cards while I shoot... I could go on but it is a way more efficient workflow. The HD output looks great too.
I don't produce for network broadcast and never intend to, but I do need video and this is just what I have been looking for. It is so pain free.
Hey we still have iMovie HD if we need it! and iMovie 8 too.

  • I for one love iMovie '08

I love the new iMovie. I know a lot of veteran users have issues with it but I feel that for an average consumer user, the new app is fantastic. It is excellent for making movies relatively quickly without having to think too much. Love the integrated media manager so that I can now add/remove clips very easily. Love the new scrub interface which allows me to very quickly see which parts of a clip that I want.
I know if you want very precise editing with a frame-by-frame accuracy, this may not be the tool but for you but for me it is good enough and I suspect this will be the case for a lot of other consumers too.
Check out some of the movies I made with the new app: (Nothing professional but it took me all of 30 minutes each which is about just enough patience I have to make a video):

I think the criticizms posted in this forum do not contest the opinion of those, who are in fact happy with the new version. You can surely make good looking movies if the program fulfills your needs. No question.
But: Hardly ever did a company present an upgrade which would not even allow you to correctly display documents created in earlier versiond, not to speak of stripping the program of former capabilities.
To me, iMovie 08 ist ok for quick compilations, but definitely not for projects I have to work on, options are too limited.

  • I LOVE iMovie!!! Anyone Else

Right now, as a new and first-time user of iMovie 5.0.2, I am thrilled at the things I can do with a digital S-VHS camcorder to make video clips to make eventually a DVD. The Canopus ADVC-110 is awesome. I am willing to purchase new Apple movie or Made for Apple credible products, but are they just as easy to learn, edit, etc.? Thanks for any comments.

    Susan,
I did something similar, but I couldn't wait for retirement. A couple of years ago, I took dozens of VHS and 8mm tapes (used my Canopus ADVC-100) and made a DVD to celebrate my 25th Wedding Anniversary. It consisted of movie clips, stills and lots of music. We had a small party to celebrate and I showed my DVD. People were wowed by it and it brought many people to tears. Needless to say, I had to make copies for all. Then, our good fiends, who saw my DVD, asked me to do the same for their son's 21st birthday. What a lot of work, especially since they brought their "few" photos to scan, which turned out to be an entire shopping bag filled with photos. And, they weren't very clear on what they wanted, so they kept changing the order of pictures and changing music. Thankfully, iMovie made this fairly painless. Good luck on your project. The great thing is that it forces you to view all of the old tapes, which unfortunately, only a fraction show up on the final DVD. It's a memory that you can take with you and you will be glad you did it.

  • Is there a way to get more trailer templates for iMovie on ipad?

I don't have a mac, bot I love iMovies on the iPad. Is there a way to get more trailer templates? I noticed quite a few more on iMovie 11 and I just wanted to know if new ones would be made available for the iPad?

actually, no 'add-ons' possible or avail for iMovie/MacOS/iOS…

  • Aspect ratio problem with AVCHD in iMovie 08

I am importing footage from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 into iMovie 08. the footage gets in there fine and looks great EXCEPT that the footage (all shot in 16:9) is squashed a little bit. in the preview clips below, it looks fine, but in the player above (and if I export it as a Quicktime file) it is squashed slightly. there are black bars above and below the footage, and (I'm guessing) were the video stretched to fill the entire area, eliminating the black bars, it would be the correct aspect ratio. I've tried importing footage form the camera supposedly shot in 4:3, and the same thing happens.
I know that I can simply do a quick edit in imovie, export it, import it into final cut pro, and stretch it back. however, I'm worried about losing quality, and more importantly, I don't know the exact ratio, since I can't even figure out what imovie is doing to the video to make it squashed, let alone in what manner.
the footage from the HDC-SD9 is AVCHD, and I understand there is something about square pixels vs. rectangular, but I don't know much about it. I have tried every iteration of imovie's limited aspect ratio settings, and I can't get it to work. I know it's meant to work well with AVCHD, so I'm assuming I'm missing something fundamental and simple. (some box to check to let imovie know I'm importing AVCHD?) it's maddening to see the footage correctly in the thumbnails, but squashed for (seemingly) no reason in the playback. can you help me out? otherwise I am going to film myself holding something that is a perfect square, then import it to imovie, then export to quicktime, then import the quicktime file into finalcut, then stretch it til the rectangle becomes a perfect square, and write down the settings for the future. seems ridiculously complicated, especially for the mac world.
I love imovie 08 (seriously, some of the new toys are just so amazing, and no render time at all!), and I love this camera. please tell me they can get along!

I think I'm having a problem similar to this. I'm using a Sharp MiniDV camera, and shooting in 16:9. When I used to import to other versions of iMovie it worked fine, but w/ iMovie 08 it is squashing and stretching the incoming video to more like 20:9 (I have no idea what the actual ratio is, this is just a guess). I tried changing import to PAL 25fps, but that didn't do any thing. Any other suggestions?

  • How can i use projects from an external drive in iMovie 13?

In iMovie 11´you were able via a button to edit movies from an external hard drive without needing to install those in your computer´s internal hard drive, but in iMovie 13´ you are not able to do that anymore.
I love iMovie, because it simplicity to create and make movies and i love they added better performance for green/blue screening, but i found a problem, i have a hard drive of only 128 GB, and with my content the clips i have don´t fit in the internal hard drive so i can´t install those clips, please do something in iLife 13´and even in iWork 13´there aren´t all those options anymore that let you do your work, some people think apple is bad for work, but i always have been telling them that all Microsoft features are in Mac too but with simplicity but in the new lineup they aren´t, i love apple, i haven´t got any device that isn´t from apple even my mobiles.
    Please do something! ;(

  • How do I finalise a Project in imovie 10.0.6 (Yosemite)

    Hi guys,
I love iMovie, but generally only have time to create one per year.  I upgraded to Yosemite and iMovie was part of the upgrade.  I'm not finding it as easy to use, but just need a few tutorials I'd say.
However, after completing my latest creation, I can't find how to FINALISE it before creating a copy and sharing it.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

There is no such thing in iMovie 10 - just share when you have finished editing.

  • Photo resolution in iMovie

I'm trying to make a presentation using 30 short video clips and several hundred photos. The video clips look great, however when I import the photos into iMovie, the resolution is terrible and extremely noticeably different than the same photos in iPhoto. Why is this and how can I fix it? I love iMovie but cannot give this presentation with the photos looking so bad. Please help!

Why is this and how can I fix it?
Video resolution is poor: it is only NTSC 720x576 or PAL 720x576 so all those mgeapixel image are downsampled IF you import them to iMovie.
iMovie 4-5 have a bug you should be aware of, too:

  • Most compatable video camera with iMovie 09 ?

    Please help !
I love iMovie but was very disappointed using it with my Sony Handycam - apparently they did not speak to each other !! I used Steve Mullen's book and still didn't have any luck so I sold my camera ! Now I am hoping that Santa will bring me a new video camera and I need to tell him which is the best one for my needs. The JVC GZ-HD300 has been suggested and I have checked the compatibility on the Apple register and cannot even see it listed. I would like some true advice from real people please - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My main requirements in purchasing camera are recording in HD, HDD storage and memory card back up. Thanks

You have euro camcorders I don't know. Assuming the sr8 is our sr7 -- I havent heard anything bad. But, if you shoot where there is loud sounds the issues are:
    1) is the mic itself overloaded?
    2) does the mic overload the camcorder circuit before the gain control?
    3) if the answers are NO, then IF one could adjust camcorder gain -- then that is the solution. But, if the either 1 or 2 is true, then being able to adjust gain will not help.
Seems like the Sony suffers from 1 or 2 because if it didn't you would have already adjusted the Sony gain -- or the Sony has no gain control.
If you want to keep using the Sony you might try an external mic.
Mic output levels typically range from –40dB to -60dBu. (Bigger negative values are softer than smaller negative values.) You want a mic with less output than the built-in Sony mic. But, since you don't have its spec., it's hard to shop for a different one.
That leaves trial and error, or trying out different camcorders. Since you know at least one Canon camcorder works, I would start with Canon. I'd look for one with an external mic input AND an adjustable level. If not a level control -- a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS1: check if your Sony has a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS2: This is a wonderful example of how in 90% of the talk about camcorders, audio is never mentioned. Yet, if you talk with pros they spend more $ on mics -- often buying several -- than they do on their camcorder. In the situations you shoot at -- audio is more of a worry than video. You are recording VERY loud sounds that can overload anything but a really good mic. (Or, if the mic works -- it may out out a bigger signal than a camcorder can accept.) Which makes me wonder about buying a mic mixer and some good mics rather than a new camcorder. This would be a one time investment. In fact, you could also buy one of these stereo mic-mixer-digital recorders. Record to SD card AND pass a signal to one camcorder. It also opens the door to recording bands. Just a passing thought.

  • Why is imovie always so slow?!!

why is my iMovie 09 always so slow?
    it takes forEVER to upload!
i tried uploading it to iTunes but it said 2 hours remaining.
after two hour it skipped back to 2 hours remaining and then went up very fast.
then error 05 or something popped up and it said it failed

  • What does iMovie (09) do when I select "Export Movie"?

I can't believe this isn't an FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I love iMovie but, as many people realize quickly, part of what makes iMovie so simple to use is that it assumes certain things so that the endusers don't have to worry about them.
Well, I guess "Export Movie" is one of those, but I'm curious - what does iMovie do with my video when I use that option? I realize, for example, that "Export with Quicktime" allows me to select quite a few settings for the export, but that's not the case for iMovie, except for being able to select the exported movie resolution.
What other settings does iMovie assume?

Thanks, everyone! I apologize for being unintentionally vague. To take a step back, my source is video shot with a Canon HF200 in FXP mode which records in 1920x1080 resolution.
The root of my question is curiosity around what iMovie does to my video when I'm burning to DVD, and specifically, I noticed that there's a difference in the quality of the video when I do "Share to iDVD" versus "Export Movie" (then dragging the project into my iDVD template).
I had added some text titles to parts of my video and noticed the "Share to iDVD" caused the text to be more "jaggy". Using "Export Movie" appeared to create DVDs that didn't look jaggy, so naturally, I thought "Export Movie" was the better way to burn DVDs, which then started making me wonder what magic happens when that option is chosen.
Subsequent to my posting this question, I then ran into this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2214292&tstart=90 and learned that iMovie drops half the lines in a frame when exporting.
    - Is this what was happening when I use "Share to iDVD"? Was iMovie dropping half the lines which caused my video to look jaggy? Pictures of the videos below. In these pictures, the DVD was being played by a progressive scan DVD player on an LCD TV (if that makes a difference).
    http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i211/joelq/DSC_1679.jpg
    http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i211/joelq/DSC_1680.jpg
    - I got even more confused when I read that iMovie only does this when exporting to 960x540 or smaller. :-/ If that's the case, then is "Export Movie" exporting to a larger resolution which explains why the video quality seemed better, i.e., the video didn't appear jaggy?
    - And finally, when shooting 1920x1080 60i video, what's the best export process to get the best quality DVDs? Is this possible with iMovie 09 (or even HD)? Or do I need to upgrade to FCE? (Or should I just invest in the eBook :-)?)
    Thanks everyone!

  • Imovie and mini DVD camcorder

My students made a movie on a DV camcorder when the camera quit working. I was able to import the partial video into Imovie, but we finished the movie on my Canon mini DVD camcorder. Is there any way to somehow get the second half of the movie (on two mini dvds) into Imovie so I can edit it all together? At this point, I burned the portion in Imovie and am trying to figure out how to combine them all on my pc. However, I really love Imovie and would like to use it. Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks

I have an external hard drive. So, I guess I could just save my imovie files in the portable hard drive and then move them to my pc or vice versa? However, aren't the formats different? When I tried to use Quick Time Pro, it didn't recognize the formats (Video_TS.BUP and Video_TS.VOB)
Could I move those files into my mac using my external hard drive and then import into imovie? I should say I'm a very new Mac user, and not very experienced with editing - have only begun.
    Thanks for all your help

  • IMovie 7.1.2 blues

Since 7.1.2 iMovie does not start. Empty interface which crashes. Tried everything what can be found on this forum to solve the issue:
    - change color settings
    - delete plist iMovie
    - delete event and project caches
    - delete thumbnails files
    - no perian installed
Nothing helped. I just started to love iMovie (despite the lack of good soundtrack options).

  • When will iMovie for iPad2 be updated to allow slo-mo and speed-up?

I love iMovie, especially since I've been able to uppload movies directly without messing about converting files etc. Can anyone shed any light on wether there is any intention to update iMovie to give it slow-motion and speed-up functionality. That would make it ideal for me (I'm easily pleased) but at the minute I'm actually finding it easier to create movies I want using Window's Movie Maker...
    Thoughts greatly appreciated!

Nobody here knows Apple's future plans for iMovie until they announce them - and there's been no announcement.

  • ILife 08 with iMovie HD

A while back when they came out with iLife 08, people didn't like the new IMovie so they made iMovie HD a free download for anyone that had '08 and wanted to go back.
I have a G4 iMac with iLife 08 that doesn't meet the system requirements for iMovie 08 and I am trying to find out where to find the link to download iMovie HD that they promised. I found some download links, but they are just updates. You need to have the original iMovie HD on your machine or they won't install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
This free version was only for a short while - Is no free version any more.
Only legal way is to buy second-handed iLife 6 and up-date this to iMovie 6.0.3
And the price on this has increased so that taking a look at FinalCut Express
    might be interesting.
I love iMovie up to HD6 and FinalCut any version Express or Pro.
