I LOVE this distro!

Hi all,
For the past few weeks I've been hanging around this forum to get the feel of what it would be like installing ArchLinux. See, I'm a Fedora user. Not coz I'm a (total) newbie, but because I run in to hardware problems with just about every distro I've tried. And that's what's been stopping me from installing ArchLinux all this time.
Anyways, I got bored last weekend and thought to myself "why not!!". So I downloaded the ISO, bought a new HDD (didn't wanna erase existing stuff) and got the thing installed.
In one word: WOW!
OK, I had a few problems getting networking working, but after pulling my hair for an hour I finally got that working. Needless to say I learnt how kernel modules and those /etc/rc.d/* scripts work!! I can now set my network up in just about any distro with my eyes closed. Thanks AL ! 8)
Next was getting xorg, mouse, gnome and sound working. Had a few small quirks here, but then someone here mentioned this thing called hwd. It was so easy after that that I almost wet myself :oops: So at the end of the day I had a stable, lean, good-looking Linux distro running, and the best part is that it's......

Your comment about the speed of ArchLinux was absolutely correct. Everything about this distro is fast: booting up, opening applications, package updates, installing packages with pacman. The only thing that was so slow for me was the installation. I'll admit, it took a whole week for me to get the system the way I wanted, but I learned so much. I no longer need to go distro hopping. I had to read the wiki, read these forums, and go to the IRC chat just to install Arch. I've learned that there is no perfect distro, it's just that some distros are easier to fix than others when you run into problems. Because Arch is minimalistic, there are less places where the problems could be. Having almost all the configuration options in one file (rc.conf) was genius.

Love this java language

I am a software engineer with mosly C background and a lot of experience in real-time software development. I wanted to learn Object Oriented programming and started learning java, mostly because of free tools and good tutorials on this site.
I love this Object Oriented programming. The Swing was a little harder to learn, but the code generation in the SUN ONE IDE helped me a lot to understand how it works. The java tutorial is wonderful.
I have two problems with the language;
One these MouseListeners and Actionlisteners are hard to work with. If you set a handler for each button etc, it is easy. But with 100 buttons on a JFrame, the code becomes stupid. I used getSource() to get the Object, but the compiler doesnt know the type of the Object, so it wont let me use any methods. So I got to test for equality with each button, to find out which button clicked, so I can call the proper Class methods. This is not a good language feature, at least I could not figure a way to do it. The language should have a kid of a switch statement based on the class of the Object, whchich allows you to select the right handler from a set of classes. I am sure the run time can figure out what the Class of the Object is. It is just that the compiler would let you invoke the right methods.
The other problem I had was it would not let me use local variables in the constructor of an anonymous Class. I just couldnt understand what the rational for that is?

methods.100 buttons? That doesn't sound like a good GUI design to me. Anyway, this is problem most people encounter at one point or another. Using listeners are a pattern based on the Observer - Observable pattern. Patterns are the next step after OO. I suggest you read up on them. In particular, I would read the MVC pattern. This will give you an idea of how to eliminate this bad practice.

that is?You can use local varaibles in anonymous inner classes but only if they are final. The rational is, I suppose, to avoid unexpected behavior if the local varaible changes during the lifetime of the anonymous class instance. I don't know what the official reason is. I don't think that it isn't theoretically possible to do it, though there maybe an issue with the VM that makes this neccesary.

It looks like the app is not currently in the App Store, I can't find it in the UK nor US stores.
If you had previously downloaded it then do you have a copy on your computer's iTunes so that you can sync it to your iPad ?

After drying for a month and it's still not working, it's almost certainly suffered hardware damage and will need to be replaced. You can learn what Apple will charge to replace it here:

Verizon finally said that they would come out and boost the signal but haven't seen anyone in two weeks. I have called Verizon tech help for one year to get help with this, either trade phone or something. I am so frustrated! I picked Verizon for the clear calls and coverage inside hospitals and buildings but it's been terrible. I have had three of these phones replaced. I need a different model like the S4 or the S5 I think cause it's something in this model.

Verizon is quickly becoming the worst cell phone company out there. To read all of these pleas from your loyal customers is just so sad and pitiful. You need to be sued for your data overage charges that you are intentionally imploding on your customers. They have pleaded, very intelligently, with you to do something to fix the issue and you willingly have NOT. As is with my reception issue that I was promised a signal booster for two months ago, so is this issue with the data. You don't follow up and solve the issues. Therefore the courts will find you fraudulent. When I was promised by your super tech that I needed a signal booster and he was sending it out overnight at no charge to me, I was relieved that it would finally be taken care of so I wouldn't lose faith with Verizon. Well, that was two months ago now with no record of it ever being ordered or on my file anywhere. I have since called three more times with hours of conversations about that issue and two more techs have told me they were sending me a signal booster with no follow up what so ever. WOW! That's pitiful! You may not care now, oh but you will later when you lose lots of money and business.

Someone else may have a workaround, but, as far as I know, if you cannot interact with the screen on the iPhone, there is no way to unlock it so you can get to your contacts.
Were you saving them to iCloud by chance? If so, you can restore them to your new phone.

I have never found a more helpful, quick to respond forum. I have a PC question and I want to appologize before hand for posting it. It looks like this forum is specific to cisco routers and I should be posting to another forum site. Like said, I love this forum. Question - I have a dell latitude D800. I was in the process of updating hardware/software from Dells website. After finishing, i closed the conection and turned the computer off. I see this message that 42 updates were being installed but I never clicked the update tab. It just did it by itself. Is there anyway of finding out exactly what the updates were for? Should I do a system restore from a day or two ago - would that get rid of any updates that got installed today? I only use the dell website to perform any needed updates. Thanks!

DIVX,AVI,3PG.MP4 Player.... I LOVE THIS APP!!!!!

I was looking for a Divx and Avi player and I was amazed of what I found, there is a app called RockPlayer that is a BETA release that is a incredible app and I was surprised that this player hasn't been spoke of more on any of the forums... I read a report saying it was on Market but when I searched I couldn't find it but I did end up finding the developer site that has a download link for the apk but I was hoping that it went full version because it plays my divx, avi and almost anything I throw at it flawlessly and has clear interface... I really hope that this app will go the yards because I can see using this as my full time app.

Saw this site recently and really liked the background, http://www.rareview.com/ the subtule colours and gradients etc. I do not want to recreate this in Flash I am looking to hopefully do this in Fireworks for my site.
I would love to use the image attached and add very subtle colors and gradients to this. Am I pushing it with Fireworks? I have Photoshop and never really got into it, its just to complicated for its own good ;-)

Yes I do have Firefox and I see what you mean. Hmmm I guess if you know these things it is very simple, posted this in Flash also and it has been pointed out there also.
I am toying with the idea of either trying this as a static image in Fireworks for my site or even venturing into trying to create a similar effect using Fireworks then Flash.
Attached is the image I love and would like that as the main image with only a third of it being displayed behind a solid header or footer, do you think in Fireworks I could add the type of subtle rainbow and vapor effect with gradients over the image?
My strengths have never been good with gradients and messing with colours in both Fireworks and Photoshop, I tend to make so much work for myself I then end up hating the result ;-)

N80, I love this phone - but:

I've had this N80 for about a week now. Very superior in many ways to anything on the market. I was in singapore and had a GSM 3g chip in it. Was able to down load msn and other webpages anywhere. Could swap to wifi in local pubs with a breeze, love the way it will search for another connection - easy to swap back and forth between 3g and wifi. I was also able to test it alongside two other wifi phones along the same lines ( Hp and Dopod). Don't know why but the N80 blasted the others in down load and easy of use.
Now, my problem is this. I cannot get any hot mail hook up via the messages section of the phone. Was not able to get the 3g to do so, and I tried what I think was every option.
Question: I suppose this phone can only connect to hotmail via a 3g connection? That is, could the hotmail be used via a wifi connection without having to sign on via MSN and then go to hotmail?
Is the term hotmail used here as a generic term? What has the N80 hotmail have to do with MSN hotmail.. if anything at all????
The other phones I used have a much better msn hotmail connection and could be what I have heard called push email... don't know, but it seems possible.
This inability to get my hotmail fast is the only and I mean only thing so far I don't like about the phone.
The camera is so good that I am considering leaving my Olympus at home for the next trip out of the country. Did you guys know that the secondary camera can be used in still and video mode? Wow, talk about some candid shots at the pub with some drinking buddies. They did not even know they were being filmed!

That's exactly how mine is too. It's powered on and frozen. I thought of the same thing, to reset it and nothing is working at all. I hope we're able to get a brand new replacement - I'm NOT taking a refurbished if there are any anyway!

I am a man who needs his phone to be dependable and to work! I need it to spell accurately, I have tried other smartphones the Samsung galaxy 2 and borrowed my daughters I phone 5...the Z10 touchscreen keyboard is a zillion times better!I The phone is amazing, the web is fast and while I am still getting used to some of the different ways of doing things on this phone...so far...I am in love with the Z10!!! Thank you Blackberry!

Same here. The iPhone is phone that "just works". I am so happy I made the switch from my Droid X.
Sure, the screen is smaller, however it is nicer, and well, as I said, everything JUST WORKS on the iPhone like it should, compared to my Droid X/Android in general right now.
Android is definitely a "more powerful" OS than the iOS is, but who carres how much it can do if it doesn't do things RIGHT!

Ok, Iv'e had it for three days now and I just love everything about it.
I have to say, though, this is my first screened iPod (I bought a shuffle six months ago) and that's a brand new feature for me.
I like the design (as every single apple gadget out there). I like the weight and size for working out with it and the fact that -just like the shuffle- it's flash memory based so I'll have no skips and less damage chances if I drop it.
I'm trying not to pay too much attention to all this scratching issue. I have mine still wrapped up in the clear plastic it came with in the box (which I like a lot as well), until I get an armbad. I think that would be better than a lanyar-earbud cable since it weight a little more than the shuffle and swinging means danger in the gym (where I will primarily use my nano) and that lanyard have no protection at all (I use tha sport case for my shuffle).
So there you go, if you are making up you mind I would say, DO! Buy a Nano and enjoy that beauty.
Ease of use, great design, lightweight and small size, awesome capacity, what else can you ask for. Treat it carefully and no problem.
As for accesories, I'm sure we'll be seeing a huge variety in the next weeks, so I wouldn't mind too much about that. From fm transmitters to car and stereo adapters, cases, sleeves, carry on accesories and so on... This is what happened when iPod Shuffle first appeared on January. And today there are a lot of accesories out there...

Brand new macbook pro 2.3 2x2gb/320 is way slower than my old pc when on the web?why? I want to love this mac but am think of returning it please help. Is my ram maxed it appears i have 4gb?

I just bought this macbook pro, if im watching a sport event and doing something else on the net it is so slow moving back and forth between sites with constant freezes and shutdowns. my old sony viao was much much faster.
It appears I have 4 gb of ram my receipt says 2 x 2gb. and when I check using the apple icon in upper left corner it says 4 gb. is this my max? is there anyway to speed this up? I will buy more memory if needed, if not Im returning this comp as Im very unhappy with it.
ps. Im ****** that my pc is better, i so want to be a mac.

It's possible the DNS setting your ISP is using are interfering. Although your PC works OK Macs can be sensitive to DNS settings. Here is a MacWorld DNS Troubleshooting article that explains the issue and below is how to fix it.
1. System preferences
2. Network
3. Click Advanced
4. Click DNS tab
5. Click + sign
6. Add 208.67.222.222
7. Click + sign
8. Add 208.67.220.220
9. Click OK.
10. Exit System Preferences
11. Try out your MBP and report what happened.
