I'm a little fearful of upgrading...

I have already purchased CS4 and am currently still running CS3 on a WinXP machine. I've heard a few people say that they would wait till the first major update to upgrade. I have an extremely heavy workload currently and have no time for downtime. I'd really appreciate some feedback. Thanks!!!!!

Great. I uninstall CS3, Install CS4, and it says "Done, with errors"!!!!!! WTF!!!!! Below is the error I get. I run the Adobe Support Advisor and it doesn't find a solution!!! WTF!!!!!! I HAVE TO HAVE THIS SOFTWARE INSTALLED!!!!!!!!!! Below is the error I get. PLEASE HELP!!!! And calling Adobe is useless, I've been on hold for 1hr!!!!!

  • Fearing server upgrade

    Hey,
A few times in my Arch time I've had some trouble doing a system upgrade. Sometimes something is just broken.
Now, I have a small server which I've not upgraded for quite a while, and I'm obviously worried about upgrading it.
Therefore, is there a preferable way of upgrading it? Some clever procedure? Or should I just give up because reinstalling the system would be faster?
Specifically, the kernel is 2.6.27 which should give you a sense of how long it has been - several months I guess. And it wants me to download 341 MB's of upgrades. It looks like this:
    [atc@atcserver:~]$ sudo pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date

As a side question, how do you keep your system up to date? How often do you do it and is it maybe automated by some cron job?
    Thank you for your time.

I agree with tomk that cronning updates is a bad idea. Pacman is a package manager, not a magical system manager with AI so you really need to pay attention to what it does, especially when it issues warnings.
Most updates are completely smooth but you should try to follow the news page and the forum to stay on top of issues. I'd recommend delaying (major) updates for at least a few days for a critical system so you can see if others experience problems with them before you commit them. Generally though you should update regularly to keep up to date with security fixes and to ensure compatibility between packages.
For what it's worth, I update my system daily and have so far not had any problems worth noting. The only time I hosed my system was the first time that I ran a full system upgrade after installing from the core iso. Being a linux noob + not paying attention = reinstallation.

  • Passing on 4.0.2 upgrade???

I puchased 2 iPhone 4's two weeks ago with my wife and I have been following as many threads as possible to educate myself on what is working, works well, and what is not working well.
It would be an understatement to say that there have been more than a few comments on hiccups associated with the 4.0.2 upgrade that iTunes is suggesting whenever I sync.
I'm seriously considering just holding out till the next release rather than risking the hiccups I have been reading about.
Can I do that, or do I have to do each upgrade in sequence?
I know that I can return it if there is a problem, but I am not interested in a refurb'd replacement if I can avoid it.
    Opinions???

Do whatever you like, but there has not been one single upgrade - since the very first upgrade three years ago - that has not had about the same response on these forums.
Most people never have an issue, have never heard of these forums, and have no idea that the updates aren't working for everyone.
It probably matter little if you upgrade or not, but if you are waiting for an update to come without the resulting complaints, then it will never happen.

  • Upgrading ram modules on dv4-2145dx

Hello I need a little help about upgrading the ram for dv4-2145dx I need to know two things, first I had tried to unscrew the memory plate or cover but so far the cover just doesn't come off and it just does a clicky sound of sorts even though I had unscrew it and hence I can't access or substitute the ram modules.Second which kind of ddr2 memory module can I use with that laptop can it be 667 or 800 or lower.Well that's all my questions anybody who can help me on this issue I will truly preciate it and thanks for your attention have a great day.

I've used the Kingston brand on all my mac (ibook 700mhz G3,1.25DDR, 1.25 DP DDR & G5 DC. So far no problem. I recently purchased matched pair of 1gig (2 gi)DDR2 533mhz @ micro center, coast me $235.00. I was thinking about getting a seperate module. But I remember reading somewhere that for trouble free, better get the matched modules. 1gig x 2 per package = 2 gig or 512 x 2 = 1gig. I rather use brand for less head ache (so far).

  • Upgrading Solaris 10 8/07 to run LDOMs?

I am trying to get to a point where I can create and run logical domains - the HW is a SPARC Enterprise T5220, OS is "Solaris 10 8/07 s10s_u4wos_12b SPARC" - and according to the book ("BEGINNERS GUIDE TO LDOMS: UNDERSTANDING AND DEPLOYING LOGICAL DOMAINS for Logical Domains 1.0 release") I need to upgrade to 11/06 and install a number of patches. This is where it gets difficult, to say the least:
    1. When I try to access the patch site and download any patch, I get no further than to click on download, then accept the conditions - and back to the patch search page.
    2. Come to that, it seems to be next to impossible to get any actual information out of this Sunsolve site - I must admit it may be because I normally keep Javascript disabled, but even after allowing sun.com, it still doesn't seem to work as I would have expected for a professionally built support site. Is there something else I need to do, perhaps?
    3. And finally, it may be that what I am trying to do is futile, since I haven't found anything to inicate that I can patch my way up to 11/06; is that something that is possible?

If you have a support contract, you can patch up to something that is functionally equivalent to 11/06 in most respects. But is not officially 11/06.
There may be a few packages missing that represent new software added in the release. But those packages can be added manually if necessary.
Whether or not a patches machine is sufficient for LDOMS, I don;t know since I havent used LDOMS.
However in my experience, very little requires an upgraded machine as opposed to a patched machine.
    So you're probably fine.
But if necessary, you can always do an upgrade install or do a liveupgrade..
The sunsolve site is normally pretty reliable. I don't normally have any problems.
Maybe you need to accept cookies or something.

  • Performance problem after upgrade from Web version to Basic version

A couple days I ago I 'upgraded' my SQL Azure database from the Web service tier to Basic. Since doing that the performance on many of my queries as dropped noticeably. I've made no schema changes, and the amount of data in my database has changed very
little since the upgrade. Has anyone had this same problem?
    Randy Minder

    Randy,
See this blog about how to upgrade to the new tiers and some advice on finding the right fit.
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/sql-database-upgrade-new-service-tiers/
Basic is not equivalent to Web in the new Editions tiers. While you do 'upgrade' to editions, granting you access to new features and the tiers themselves, you can now choose an experience which has less performance than you had previous in Web/Business.
Try upgrading your server to a new tier based on the advice in the article above. If you read the article below:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn369873.aspx
You can see that standard is actually targeting at many of the production use cases of Web, where Basic is targeting developers who were using Web, before, to test out their applications. Basic isn't intended for scenarios with multiple concurrent users.
Hopefully that helped. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply.
    Regards,
    Chris

  • What do I need to do to upgrade my macbook pro 17 from OS X 10.4.11 to Version 10.5.8

What do I need to do to upgrade my macbook pro 17 from OS X 10.4.11 to  OS X 10.5.8

Locate and purchase a copy of Leopard. They may be found on eBay and Amazon.com. Be sure to only purchase a retail package.
Or you can save a little money by upgrading to Snow Leopard which costs $29.00. If you dec8de to purchase Snow Leopard, you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Upgrading in the middle of a project

I've been working on old g4-dual and final cut 4.5 and want to upgrade to g5quad and final cut studio pro 5. Besides having to re-render, will I encounter other problems?

Why do I want to upgrade? I started this project years ago on final cut 2 on computer still using (g4). I've upgraded to final cut 4.5, after digitizing but before cutting sequences. The computer now has lots of problems which will be expensive to fix. (not the fault of fina cut) In addition, can't carry well the load of the project. Done everything and still crashes all the time. Maybe this has to do with upgrade, but doen't make sense to me that this is the case....Since I'm getting a new computer have to reput final cut. I have lost the disk for final cut 2, and anyways afraid it won't go on the tiger system. So thought if I need to buy a new final cut, why not the latest. But a little afraid to upgrade to new computer, new operating system and new final cut. Hear different things about problems could face and just looking for assurances! Thanks

  • New here, but with something that's a little bit old.

Hi there, I'm SChief. My real name is Sanjeev. The reason why I've registered myself here is because a friend of mine gave me an old laptop (he didn't need it anymore). Don't panic, but it's a oldschool Tecra 8100. Normally I wouldn't pay any attention to such a old laptop, but this one is in mint condition. It has only be used for 80 days (eighty!), which is like ehm, nothing for a business laptop back in the day. The chassis is like new and it only has a few minor scratches which you don't even see when you're not looking for it. So because it's in a great condition, I would like to give it a nice second life. While I was searching for some information about this laptop, Google sends me 9 out of 10 times to this forum, which has a lot of useful information.
So, I wanted to start with a little hard drive upgrade. I have a Toshiba MK4026GAX (40GB, 4200RPM) sitting here on my desk, and I would like to put this one in my Tecra. So I removed the old 10GB HDD, disconnected it from the case, attached the case to the 40GB HDD, and pushed it back into the laptop. All good so far. But the misery starts now. When I turn the laptop on, the Tecra doesn't see the HDD. I'm completely hopeless, because I really don't know what to do (it already has the newest BIOS)... I'm sure that the 40GB HDD is alright, because I've removed it from a laptop that was still working. I hope that someone here has some more information for me.
I also noticed that finding memory is kinda hard for this laptop. It seems that the Tecra only accepts the Kingston KTT-SO100/256, and it's impossible to find a set of these (and if you've finally found a shop, the prices are sky high). I've mailed Toshiba Netherlands (I live in the Netherlands), and asked if they had some old stock. Unfortunately, they did not.
Maybe it's smarter to open a new topic in the right sub-forum for these questions, but for now, I'll see what happens. Forgive me for my long story and my bad English by the way.

But what can I cut and paste? the html code or image and text directly?
depend on which template you used.
if you use iweb photos page template then you need to search for my photos page solutions in this forum.
@ot: cut and paste from the online version
@rw: You can drag an image from the website to the Desktop
have your try your methods in iweb photos page?

  • Upgrading to OS X 10.5

This isn't as much of a problem as it is a request for advice. I am currently using a late model 12" iBook G4 with a 1.2 Ghz processor, and 1.25GB of RAM. This machine is currently running 10.3.9, and has been since it was bought in late 2004. Unfortunately, I have been running into problems lately when trying to use devices and software that simply aren't compatible with the older version of OS X. As a result, I have been forced to look into upgrading. I was planning on buying 10.4 and upgrading to that, because I assumed it would run better than 10.5, but I have not been able to find it anywhere for a reasonable price, so I decided to look into upgrading to 10.5 instead. I've read many stories of people who have one of the older iBooks and have already upgraded, and it appears that everything should be fine.
My question to the forum is this: would it be beneficial to copy my hard drive's contents to another disk (external) and have a new, larger capacity hard drive installed, and then put 10.5 on the new hard drive. I would think that this would help 10.5 to run at it's best on the older system because there will be less clutter from the older operating system, and because I was planning on upgrading to a larger hard drive anyways, I figure, why not kill two birds with one stone? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, as I have little experience with upgrading computers.

Just for reference, here are the technical specs for Leopard:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
Regarding the hard drive, the one you have from 2004 is now close to 5 years old, and the average life of a hard drive is 3-5 years. So your old drive could well be coming to the end of its useful life. So a new drive would probably be in order, and you can get one up to 250 GB in size.
Here is a utility that will allow you to get a detailed look at the health of your hard drive:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
By all means, you should copy the drive's contents to an external disk, just to safeguard the contents. One easy way to do this is with Super Duper:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You can download it and do a complete backup for free. If you want to register it and unlock some of the other features, you can register it for $27 last time I checked.
Do you already have a FireWire external hard drive? If not, this might be a good time to get one. Super Duper will allow you to make a bootable clone, which is one very handy way to do back ups. For a bootable clone, you need an external volume the same size as the internal volume.
You might also want to use Time Machine. Generally you want an external volume greater than your internal volume.
One thing to consider is an external drive large enough to divide into 3 partitions. One would be 60 GB and contain the clone of your current drive as an archive. A second partition would be the same size as your new drive and would be for a bootable clone of it, which would be for backup. A third partition would be for Time Machine should you decide to make use of it.
I would be inclined to Partition and format the new drive and install Leopard by doing an Erase and Install. You can even do a custom install and not install all the languages and printer drivers you won't need. You could then migrate whatever data you want onto the new drive, and install any other software you want and then bring it all up to date. If there is data you want to archive, you can just leave it on the iBook clone.
I suggest this mostly because I am not too inclined to trust a 5 year old hard drive. You could also try an Upgrade or an Archive and Install. Here is an article about the options:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
But it is really important to have a good backup before you begin. Sometimes things do go wrong, and there will be no choice but to do an Erase and Install.
If you have further questions, please feel free to post back.
    Good luck!

  • 10.4.9 upgrade - now missing Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight..

This week Software Update invited me to upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. I accepted.
But when I restarted, all the info on the right hand of the menu bar - Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight. - had disappeared. Additionally, the iMac was working very slowly indeed.
I initially used Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and Verify Disk to no avail- no problems reported.
I then used the Combo Updater after reading concerns about the Software Update: still no improvement.
I have since run Onyx, which has speeded everything up - but still no Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight, etc. I am very disappointed by this, and have warned colleagues NOT to take to upgrade to 10.4.9 until we know what has happened and how to fix it.
Question to Apple: IS THIS UPGRADE FLAWED?
Meanwhile, repair suggestions gratefully received.... I really would like my Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight etc. back.
20" Intel IMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.5 GB RAM
        Mac user since the 80s

Thanks for this. Actually, I looked at this after the earlier posting. These menu items were not apparent in this folder, nor discoverable through the Find menu.
Back to my earlier concern. We ALL want more people to embrace Macs as a genuine alternative to PCs. True or false? If true, isn't one of the real sales points that modern Macs are now robust, and don't go wrong? Virus-free, solid, beautifully designed, built to last and so on.....
I have been using Macs for almost 20 years. I have contributed software reviews to various Mac publications. I have advised international companies on adapting their products for Macs. I battle to persuade institutions like banks to make their software products available on the Mac platform. With colleagues, I have built a very influential international media business using Macs alone. We run a hugely successful radio station using Macs.
But if, with all our experience, we can't sort out a problem triggered by a Software Update, what earthly hope has the average new Mac user? 9/10, he or she will not even know about these Discussion forums. There is NO warning message with the update. No-one tells you you may have to dump a .plist, There is NOTHING on the official side of the Support pages - even if the average new Mac user knows they even exist.
If Apple wants to be taken seriously, spend a little more testing upgrades before releasing them. Yes, Steve, this is for you, though I doubt your subordinates will dare show it to you.... prove it by replying!
Meanwhile, thanks Eric for pulling this company out of a large hole..... I hope it helps others. Thanks very much.

  • Slow login, bundle, polices after upgrade 10.3.1 t0 10.3.4

We had 10.3.1 running on servers and workstations with little problem, after upgrade to 10.3.4 we now have over all slow login around 5min then the app launcher will take another 10-30 min to display contents. if you try to zac ref we are getting multiple errors on workstations. the most common is "Unable to refresh the system settings"

    THEN System setting error again.
I am able to ping the server using it's dns name.
not sure where to go from here any help would be appreciated.

Start with a ZDC report on all of your Servers.
The ZDC Tool can be found on Patchfinder with the other patches.
This can help identify issues such as missing or incorrect files.
